Forte come il sole nasce da percorsi di co-progettazione sui temi dell’energia sostenibile e rinnovabile promossi nell’ambito del Progetto GECO dal 2019 al 2022 con le scuole e le realtà educative del territorio Pilastro di Bologna. GECO (Green Energy COmmunity) è un progetto di gestione comunitaria della risorsa energetica locale nelle aree di Pilastro e Roveri (Bologna) co-finanziato dal fondo europeo EIT Climate-KIC e promosso da AESS, ENEA, Università di Bologna e con il supporto del Comune di Bologna. Il progetto punta a promuovere modelli di comunità energetiche e si inserisce nell’ambito delle azioni per una transizione energetica verso le fonti rinnovabili, come risposta alla crisi climatica, alla disuguaglianza economica e all’ingiustizia socio-ambientale. Alla dimensione tecnologica, legale ed economica, si aggiunge quella sociale e culturale che presuppone un impegno anche in campo educativo e un’attivazione dei cittadini verso nuovi stili di vita più sostenibili.

Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) is a warm-season annual plant grown in the past for the bast fiber. In the last decades, this crop has been re-evaluated for many alternative industrial uses of its biomass (i.e., production of biofuel, biocomposite materials, bioproducts). In this paper, the interaction effects of sowing time (May and June) and plant population (P20 and P40, 20 and 40 plants m-2, respectively) on yield and some biomass parameters were analysed in two cultivars of kenaf (Tainung 2-TAI, and Everglades 41-EVER), in a two-year experiment in semi-arid environment, under irrigation. The aim of this paper was to assess the potential of this crop as an energy or industrial feedstock, in south Mediterranean environment where was never cultivated. Overall, plants from late sowing (June) were smaller and with less node, those at high plant density (P40) were thinner. In both seasons, plants of TAI were taller than those of EVER. Plant weight was greater in P20, and an overall significant negative correlation was found between plant weight and actual plant density (r = -0.76 **). The shift of sowing time reduced significantly the final dry biomass. Crop productivity did not change with plant density, however a higher percent bark corresponded to P40 in both years, cultivars, and sowing times, A simple model was developed to simulate and predict the course of LAI and dry biomass (AGB) with time, using field dataset of 2004, for calibration, and dataset of 2005, for validation. The minor response of LAI to plant population in 2005 led to a low accuracy of model approximation. This result suggests that other variables that are not considered in the model, may influence LAI. Nevertheless, the overall AGB model approximation of observed value was accurate. Concluding, the results revealed that biomass productivity is more influenced by sowing time than by plant density. However, plant population has been found to regulate the proportion of bark/core layers, with important implications for industrial (energy and pulp production) purposes. Further improvements on the simple model developed, e.g., including soil water nitrogen balances submodels, may be done, in order to explore the possibility of using the model under different conditions of soil water content and nitrogen fertilization.

We provide a database of the coseismic geological surface effects following the Mw 6.5 Norcia earthquake that hit central Italy on 30 October 2016. This was one of the strongest seismic events to occur in Europe in the past thirty years, causing complex surface ruptures over an area of >400 km2. The database originated from the collaboration of several European teams (Open EMERGEO Working Group; about 130 researchers) coordinated by the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia. The observations were collected by performing detailed field surveys in the epicentral region in order to describe the geometry and kinematics of surface faulting, and subsequently of landslides and other secondary coseismic effects. The resulting database consists of homogeneous georeferenced records identifying 7323 observation points, each of which contains 18 numeric and string fields of relevant information. This database will impact future earthquake studies focused on modelling of the seismic processes in active extensional settings, updating probabilistic estimates of slip distribution, and assessing the hazard of surface faulting.

Sweet sorghum is a C4 species that is well adapted to temperate and tropical semiarid environments (Cosentino, 1996). In these areas water deficit is one or the main limiting factors of plant production, and it may adversely affect germination and seedling establishment (Murillo-Amador et al., 2002). Indeed, high evaporation rates may occur during the opti mal sowing time of sorghum resulting, even when irrigation is applied at sowing, in rapid drying of the medium surrounding the seed and in a marked decrease in water potenti al. Drought resistant varieties are under breeding and selection for these environments. In this paper, the effects of increasing levels of water stress on seed germination in two lines of sweet sorghum selected for drought-tolerance, as compared to a commerciai cultivar, were studied, in order to also determine their differences in water potential threshold at which germination and radicle growth are inhibited.

Seed respiration has been utilized as an index of seed vigour and has correlated well with seedling development. We examined the respiration process as affected by temperature and osmopriming during imbibition in two cultivars of sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench], differing in capacity to germinate at low temperatures. Respiration of imbibing seeds was measured with a specially built apparatus linked to an infrared gas analyser. Seed respiration at the beginning of the imbibition process strictly depended on temperature (T). T also greatly affected the total CO2 respired to reach the first germination event, which significantly increased as T declined from the optimum. Osmopriming affected seed respiration differently in the two cultivars. In the cold-tolerant cultivar (Brandes), osmopriming reduced the total thermal requirements and, at T close to the minimum for germination, the energy required to achieve the first radicle protrusion. In the cold-sensitive cultivar (H128), osmopriming lowered base T for respiration and reduced the requirements for total CO2 respired, allowing germination even at 108C. The cold-tolerant cultivar always maintained higher respiration rates than the cold-sensitive one, showing a greater capability of mobilizing energy from reserves. Germination time (i.e. GR50) related well to cumulative seed respiration down to a threshold value of cumulative CO2, after which GR50 was more affected by T than was cumulative respiration. Seed water uptake significantly slowed with decreasing T, and was accelerated by osmopriming. However, water imbibition rate influenced the start of seed respiration, but not the subsequent rate of metabolic activity preceding germination. Seed respiration was a good indicator of the activation of germinative metabolic processes, although under extreme T conditions the seed populations still respired, even if at low levels, but did not germinate rapidly or completely.
