The study aimed to determine the effect of the use of insect meal in the diet of pheasants in aviary breeding on anatomical and morphological traits which can affect their survival in natural conditions and their suitability for introduction. The study consisted of measurements of the weight and length of selected body parts of pheasants (hens and cocks) from two groups – control and experimental. The control group consisted of 15 individuals (7 cocks and 8 hens) fed a traditional diet, and the experimental group comprised 15 birds (7 cocks and 8 hens) receiving a diet supplemented with insect meal. The weight of the following body parts was measured: body, carcass, breast muscles, whole thighs, thigh muscles, drumstick muscles, drumstick and thigh bones, heart, liver, stomach muscle, and head. The length of the spur (left), whole leg, humerus, forearm, femur, tibia, and sternum was also measured. The use of insect meal contributed to increased leg muscle weight, which should be regarded as a positive trait in this species, given the threat of predation in natural conditions.

The aim of the study was to determine the effects of replacing soybean meal with insect meal on the body weight and the chemical composition of selected muscle groups of common pheasant females and males, including the mineral composition and the amino acid profile of the thigh and breast muscles. The study was conducted on three feeding groups, namely one control and two experimental groups. In the control group, plant feed components were used, which are commonly used to feed pheasants in confined breeding facilities. In the experimental groups, 100 g (group II) and 200 g (group III) portions of insect meal were introduced instead of the plant-protein components. The experiment used a preparation of insect larvae (Hermetia illucens) containing approximately 52% crude protein. The pheasant diet supplementation applied contributed to an increase in the proportion of muscles in the carcasses, with the highest effectiveness obtained for a 20% addition of insect meal. Lower and significant differences were noted in the feed conversion by birds from the experimental groups, as compared to the control group. The chemical composition of the birds’ muscles also changed. The experimental groups exhibited higher protein and fat contents and a lower water content. No significant changes in the amino acid profile or the mineral composition of the muscles were noted. The few exceptions concerned the methionine levels in both muscle groups and the isoleucine levels in the breast muscles. In most cases, the mineral composition did not vary significantly (p < 0.05). When supplementing the diet of breeding pheasants for improving meatiness, a 20% addition of insect meal is recommended, which affects the production effect of this trait while reducing feed consumption and maintaining the fatty acid profile.

Enriching cats’ living environment in shelters is crucial in reducing their stress. Easier access to resources allows cats to display natural behavior. This study aimed to assess whether cats staying in an enriched environment would be less stressed than cats staying in a standard environment. The first group consisted of cats living in an environment with fewer resources (standard environment)—103 cats. The second group consisted of cats living in an enriched environment—76 cats. The research material consisted of hair collected to determine the cortisol level. The results indicate that cats from a more enriched environment have almost half the level of cortisol in hair than cats from an environment with fewer resources (0.059 ng/mg vs. 0.101 ng/mg; p = 0.000001).

This study presents the hematological and serum biochemical values of physically captured roe deer (Capreolus capreolus). The study material was blood sampled from roe deer captured with the use of a specialist trap mesh and no anesthesia. Blood samples were collected from 122 roe deer from January to April in 2016, 2017, and 2018 in the Lublin region of Poland. The hematological and biochemical variables were determined with results showing statistically significant differences between the mean values of RBC, HCT, and HB according to sex. Reference intervals should be more specific to the broad physical versus chemical capture categories.

The aim of the study was to assess the impact of the duration of the mating season and the time of day on the parameters of the vocalization pheasants (duration of vocalization, frequency of the sound wave, intervals between vocalizations). In the study, pheasant vocalization recorded in the morning (600–800) and in the afternoon (1600–1800) between April and June 2020 was analyzed. In total, the research material consisted of 258 separate vocalizations. After recognition of the individual songs of each bird, frequency-time indicators were collected from the samples to perform statistical analysis of the recorded sounds. The duration of the first syllable [s], the duration of the second syllable [s], the duration of the pause between the syllables [s], the intervals between successive vocalizations [min], and the peak frequency of the syllables I and II [Hz] were specified for each song. The duration of the syllables and the pauses between the syllables and vocalizations were determined through evaluation of spectrograms. The peak amplitude frequencies of the syllables were determined via time-frequency STFT analysis. Statistically significant differences in the distributions of the values of all variables between the analyzed months were demonstrated. The longest duration of total vocalization and the shortest time between vocalizations were recorded in May. Therefore, this month is characterized by the highest frequency and longest duration of vocalization, which is related to the peak of the reproductive period. The time of day was found to exert a significant effect on all variables except the duration of syllable II. The duration of vocalization was significantly shorter in the morning, which indicates that the cooks are more active at this time of day in the study area. The highest peak amplitude frequencies of both syllables were recorded in April, but they decreased in the subsequent months of observation. The time of day was also shown to have an impact on the peak amplitude frequencies, which had the highest values in the morning.

We developed an algorithm to classify brown hares into two age classes, juveniles (up to 1 year old) and adults (over 1 year old), based on body weight, which can be determined by both the examination of live animals and postmortem analysis. Considering the strong correlation between lens weight and carcass weight, we assumed that hares could be classified into one of the two age groups based only on carcass weight, using a logistic regression model. Using logistic regression, a model was constructed to assess the age of hares based on their body weight. For comparison with the current age-assessment method based on the dry lens weight, a logistic regression classifying the hares based on the dry lens weight was performed as well. The results of the study facilitated the development of a method to classify hares into age groups based on body weight. The proposed approach is innovative, as it allows for the determination of the age of not only culled (postmortem) but also live hares. The method is easy and does not require laboratory tests; hence, the results can be used immediately following evaluation. This method allows hares to be categorized into two age groups (juveniles and adults). With an accuracy of 97.52% and 95.45% in the case of juvenile and adult hares, respectively, the proposed approach can be widely used both in population management and scientific research.

It has been assumed that stroking relieves stress responses in dogs, and dogs with the activation of the left-brain hemisphere (right-pawed) may show better adaptation to stress conditions. The aim of the study was to determine whether the stroking stimulus induced changes in the level of selected neuroregulators in dogs’ blood and whether these changes depended on the sex and the predominance of the activity of one of the brain hemispheres. The study involved 40 dogs of various breeds and both sexes. The experimental animals were subjected to a behavioral tests (Kong test), and the levels of noradrenaline, serotonin, and cortisol were determined in their blood plasma. The results of the behavioral test revealed that most dogs exhibited increased activity of the left hemisphere. Furthermore, irrespective of the sex and paw preference, stroking the animal was found to alleviate the stress response, which was reflected in reduced cortisol levels and increased serotonin levels. It was found that the plasma noradrenaline, cortisol, and serotonin levels were lower in the female dogs than in the males. Additionally, the plasma noradrenaline and serotonin levels were higher in the right-pawed dogs than in the left-pawed dogs. The present results confirm the assumption that right-pawed dogs adapt to stressful conditions more readily.

Search and rescue dogs are an important link in the search for missing persons. The aim of the study was to assess exam stress in search and rescue dogs and their handlers. The study included 41 rescue teams taking exams of field and rubble specialties. The level of cortisol, which is the main glucocorticosteroid modulating stress reactions in humans and dogs, was analyzed. The biological material used to assess the hormone concentration was saliva collected in a non-invasive way. In total, 164 test samples were collected: two from the dog and two from the handler before and immediately after the exam. Rescue exams were shown to significantly increase salivary cortisol in both dogs and their handlers. Strong interactions between cortisol levels in human–dog teams were also found with a more pronounced effect in female dog–female handler dyads.

In breeders’ general opinion small breed females produce less numerous litters. The aim of the study was to analyse the litter size and the frequency of the gender ratio in selected small dog breeds in view of their popularity in Poland. The data set comprised information on 639 litters (in total 2578 puppies) of eight breeds, which were born between January 2003 and end December 2014. The results were statistically analysed using statistical program SPSS 20.0. Medium-size litters were observed in the analysed small dog breeds (4.034±0.1). Comparison of the selected breeds of the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) Groups showed that the mean litter size in Group IX was higher (4.36±0.08) than that in Group III (3.87±0.14) and the differences were statistically significant. The study has confirmed the hypothesis that larger females produce more numerous litters, but there are large intra-individual variations in the number of pups born in individual breeds. Additionally, the gender ratio in the puppies born in the analysed breeds was equal, despite the fluctuations in the individual breeds.

The basic method for imaging functional states of the brain involves recordings of electrical activity, i.e., electroencephalograpy (EEG). The majority of studies of EEG recordings in animals have been performed with the use of pharmacological agents that restrict animals' mobility. Assessment of electrical brain activity can provide assessments of behavior, including social and utility-related behavior, under a number of welfare conditions. Our studies were conducted on 2 female dogs - one trained and one untrained dog. The recordings of the EEG signal were made at full consciousness and with the animalsin an unrestrained, static position. EEG readings were recorded during a voice-command and under complete-silence. Analysis of the EEG signal frequency in the case of the untrained dog showed maximum amplitude at 17 Hz (beta 1-beta 2 range), which suggested increased brain activity in response to voice commands. Response of trained female to the sound stimulus was manifested by the dominant components in the beta 3 range (20 Hz-28 Hz) and there were no periods of dominant alpha rhythm in that measurement. The dog was calm but waited for the commands attentively and actively. However, in the untrained dog during periods of relaxation and rest associated with the presence of a guardian, frequencies close to the alpha rhythm were noted (8 Hz-14 Hz). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the investigations, the number of collisions with red deer (Cervus elaphus Linnaeus, 1758), roe deer (Capreolus capreolus Linnaeus, 1758), and elks (Alces alces Linnaeus, 1758) registered on the roads of 18 districts of the Lubelskie region in Poland in 2011-2013 was analysed. The relationships between the number of wildlife-vehicle collisions and the abundance of the analysed animal species, forestation, road density, and the number of registered vehicles in the districts were examined. The trend towards changes in these factors was analysed and safety coefficients, i.e. the number of accidents per 1000 vehicles, the number of accidents per 1-km² area, the number of accidents per 1000 animals, accident density, and animal density per 1-km² area, were calculated. 1073 wildlife-vehicle collisions were recorded in the analysed period (2011-2013). Over half of the traffic incidents, i.e. 66%, were collisions with roe deer, collisions with red deer represented 27%, and accidents with elks accounted for 7%. The distribution of the wildlife-vehicle collisions was not uniform across the Lubelskie region. The greatest numbers were noted in Puławy (161), Lubartów (132), and Biała Podlaska (107) Districts, which was probably related to the substantial increase in the abundance of the analysed animal species and in the number of registered vehicles. The aim of the study was to assess the relationship between the motor lateralization in dogs and the concentration of cortisol and tyrosine in their plasma during a visit to a veterinary clinic. The research group consisted of 56 dogs. Motor lateralization was tested by of an adhesive tape test. The stress intensity was assessed basing on the levels of cortisol and ft4 in the serum blood. The statistical analysis revealed that in the group of 56 dogs there were 14 left-pawed dogs, 36 right-pawed dogs, and 6 dogs did not show particular paw preference. The average cortisol levels in particular groups were as follows: 7.94 ug/dl, 3.92 ug/dl and 3.7 ug/dl, whereas the level of tyrosine in the subjects that demonstrated left-sided lateralization (mean ± SE) (1.95 ± 0.46 ng/dl) for those with right-side lateralization (1.56 ± 0.23 ng/dl) and ambilateral dogs (1.01 ± 0.22 ng/dl). The statistical calculation of Pearson's χ 2 showed a significant relationship between the sex and the lateralization (χ 2  = 6.238, df = 2, p = 0.0442).

The aim of this study was to assess salivary cortisol level in dogs during admission and a three-day stay in a pet hotel. The study involved 20 dogs admitted to a pet hotel for a stay lasting for at least three consecutive days. The study group consisted of 10 small dogs and 10 medium-sized dogs, eight females and 12 males. Saliva was collected each day to assess cortisol levels. A stay in a hotel is a stressful situation for dogs, as evidenced by the increase in the salivary cortisol level. The highest salivary cortisol level was observed on the day of admission to the hotel. The median salivary cortisol level in the dogs on the consecutive days was 2.7 ng/ml on admission, 2.1 ng/ml after 24 hours, and 1.9 ng/ml after 48 hours. Depending on the size of the dog, the median salivary cortisol level was 2.8 ng/ml, 2.9 ng/ml and 2.4 ng/ml in the small dogs and and 2.2 ng/ml, 1.7 ng/ml and 1.2 ng/ml in the medium sized dogs on the consecutive days.
