Abstract

We performed the complex static and dynamic mechanical characterization of cross-linked polyethylene foams; we investigated the effect of foam density on various mechanical properties and the relationship between cell structure and mechanical behavior. The impact damping and energy absorption properties of the foams were determined by falling weight impact tests, while static mechanical properties were determined by compression and compression set tests. The experimental results validated our hypothesis that the relationship between the above-mentioned mechanical properties and density can be described with the power law with good approximation. Abstract

BACKGROUND It was the objective of this retrospective study to analyse the causes of injury, surgical approaches, outcome, and complications in patients with vascular trauma and to report our experience with vein homografts for arterial reconstruction in the upper and lower limbs and cervicothoracic region in patients operated on over a period between 1981-2001. PATIENTS In 128 patients with peripheral arterial injuries the mechanism was direct penetration in 90 cases and blunt injury in 20 cases. In 4 cases a chronic damage (false aneurysm, AV fistula) was observed. Isolated vascular trauma was present in 97 patients (75.8%), 31 cases (24.2%) were aggravated by concomitant bone fractures, and nerve or soft tissue damage. Most frequently injured vessels were the superficial femoral (22.6%), crural (22.6%), and ulnar and radial (13.2%) arteries. 16 patients with penetrating cervicothoracic arterial injuries were registered during this period. 8 patients underwent emergency exploration and 8 patients angiography prior urgent exploration. RESULTS Saphenous vein interposition grafting was applied with good results in 34 patients, polytetrafluoroethylene and Dacron grafts were used in eight cases, end to end anastomosis in 12 cases, venous bypasses in 5 cases, venous patches in 7 cases. 17 patients underwent arterial repair and 9 venous repair. Vein homografts as an arterial substitute were implanted in 8 patients. Five secondary amputations were performed and five patients died. The limb salvage rate was 95% and the primary patency rate of vein homografts was 75% (excluded primary amputations). The penetrating cervicothoracic injuries were all repaired with improvement in level of consciousness and neurological deficit when present. CONCLUSIONS Most vascular injuries of the extremities can be managed successfully unless associated with severe concomitant damage of the bones, nerves and soft tissues. In the absence of suitable autologous vein grafts, homografts appear to be an interesting alternative for arterial repair. In penetrating cervicothoracic vascular injuries immediate operative repair offers the best chance of recovery.

Abstract

The adherability and weldability of pure poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and basalt fibre-reinforced PLA were investigated in this research. The joining efficiency rate is introduced as a comparative parameter among different joining processes. In the case of adhesive bonding, 16 different adhesives were used to join specimens together. The highest bond strength and joining efficiency rate for both the pure (16 MPa, 78%) and basalt fiber-reinforced (18 MPa, 44%) adhesive-bonded specimens was achieved with acrylate-based two-component adhesives. The bond strength and joining efficiency rates of bonded specimens manufactured with four welding technologies (hot gas welding, friction stir welding, ultrasonic welding, laser welding) were also investigated. The highest bond strength for both pure PLA and basalt fibre-reinforced PLA specimens (51 and 125 MPa, respectively) was attained by laser welding. The highest joining efficiency rate for pure PLA specimens (85%) was attained by ultrasonic welding, while it was achieved by laser welding for basalt-fibre reinforced PLA specimens (70%). 42. 3D printing-assisted interphase engineering of polymer composites: Concept and feasibility.

Abstract

We introduced a general concept to create smart, (multi)functional interphases in polymer composites with layered reinforcements, making use of 3D printing. The concept can be adapted for both thermoplastic and thermoset matrix-based composites with either thermoplastic- or thermoset-enriched interphases. We showed feasibility using an example of a composite containing a thermoset matrix/thermoplastic interphase. Carbon fiber unidirectional reinforcing layers were patterned with poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) through 3D printing, then infiltrated with an amine-cured epoxy (EP). The corresponding composites were subjected to static and dynamic flexure tests. The PCL-rich interphase markedly improved the ductility in static tests without deteriorating the flexural properties. Its effect was marginal in Charpy impact tests, which can be explained with effects of specimen and PCL pattern sizes. The PCL-rich interphase ensured self-healing when triggered by heat treatment above the melting temperature of PCL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
