Search

The B -> X_s gamma branching ratio is currently measured with around 5% accuracy. Further improvement is expected from Belle II. To match such a precision on the theoretical side, evaluation of O(alpha_s^2) corrections to the partonic decay b -> X_s^part gamma are necessary, which includes the b -> s gamma, b -> s g gamma, b -> s g g gamma, b -> s qbar q gamma decay channels. Here, we evaluate the unrenormalized contribution to b -> s gamma that stems from the interference of the photonic dipole operator Q_7 and the current-current operators Q_1 and Q_2. Our results, obtained in the cut propagator approach at the 4-loop level, agree with those found in parallel by Fael et al. who have applied the amplitude approach at the 3-loop level. The impact of the finite top-quark mass on the inclusive Higgs production cross section at higher perturbative orders has been an open question for almost three decades. In this paper, we report on the computation of this effect at NNLO QCD. For the purely gluonic channel, it amounts to $+0.62\%$ relative to the result obtained in the HEFT approximation. The formally sub-leading partonic channels over-compensate this shift, leading to an overall effect of $-0.32\%$ at a $pp$ collider energy of $13\,\mathrm{TeV}$, and $-0.16\%$ at $8\,\mathrm{TeV}$. We determine the three-loop form factor parameterising the amplitude for the production of an off-shell Higgs boson in gluon fusion in QCD with a single massive quark. The result is obtained via a numerical solution of a system of differential equation for the occurring master integrals. The solution is also used to determine the high-energy and threshold expansions of the form factor. Our findings may be used for the evaluation of virtual corrections generated by top-quark and b-quark loops in Higgs boson hadroproduction cross sections at next-to-next-to-leading order., Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures

The successful operation of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the excellent performance of the ATLAS, CMS, LHCb and ALICE detectors in Run-1 and Run-2 with $pp$ collisions at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV as well as the giant leap in precision calculations and modeling of fundamental interactions at hadron colliders have allowed an extraordinary breadth of physics studies including precision measurements of a variety physics processes. The LHC results have so far confirmed the validity of the Standard Model of particle physics up to unprecedented energy scales and with great precision in the sectors of strong and electroweak interactions as well as flavour physics, for instance in top quark physics. The upgrade of the LHC to a High Luminosity phase (HL-LHC) at 14 TeV center-of-mass energy with 3 ab$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity will probe the Standard Model with even greater precision and will extend the sensitivity to possible anomalies in the Standard Model, thanks to a ten-fold larger data set, upgraded detectors and expected improvements in the theoretical understanding. This document summarises the physics reach of the HL-LHC in the realm of strong and electroweak interactions and top quark physics, and provides a glimpse of the potential of a possible further upgrade of the LHC to a 27 TeV $pp$ collider, the High-Energy LHC (HE-LHC), assumed to accumulate an integrated luminosity of 15 ab$^{-1}$., Comment: Report from Working Group 1 on the Physics of the HL-LHC, and Perspectives at the HE-LHC

We present the two-loop virtual amplitudes for heavy-quark pair production in light quark-antiquark annihilation and gluon fusion channels, including full spin and color dependence. We use expansions around kinematical limits and numerical integration to obtain results for the involved master integrals. From these, we determine the renormalised infrared finite remainders of the coefficients of amplitude decompositions in terms of color and spin structures. The remainders are given in form of numerical interpolation grids supported by expansions around the production threshold and the high energy limit. Finally, we provide the spin density matrix, which encodes the heavy-quark spin correlations and is sufficient for phenomenological applications. Weak radiative decays of the B mesons belong to the most important flavor changing processes that provide constraints on physics at the TeV scale. In the derivation of such constraints, accurate standard model predictions for the inclusive branching ratios play a crucial role. In the current Letter we present an update of these predictions, incorporating all our results for the O(alpha_s^2) and lower-order perturbative corrections that have been calculated after 2006. New estimates of nonperturbative effects are taken into account, too. For the CP- and isospin-averaged branching ratios, we find B_{s gamma} = (3.36 +_ 0.23) * 10^-4 and B_{d gamma} = 1.73^{+0.12}_{-0.22} * 10^-5, for E_gamma > 1.6GeV. Both results remain in agreement with the current experimental averages. Normalizing their sum to the inclusive semileptonic branching ratio, we obtain R_gamma = ( B_{s gamma} + B_{d gamma})/B_{c l nu} = (3.31 +_ 0.22) * 10^-3. A new bound from B_{s gamma} on the charged Higgs boson mass in the two-Higgs-doublet-model II reads M_{H^+} > 480 GeV at 95%C.L., Comment: journal version, 5 pages, no figures

We present an MC@NLO-like matching of next-to-leading order QCD calculations with the Nagy-Soper parton shower. An implementation of the algorithm within the HELAC-DIPOLES Monte Carlo generator is used to address the uncertainties and ambiguities of the matching scheme. First results obtained using the Nagy-Soper parton shower implementation in DEDUCTOR in conjunction with the HELAC-NLO framework are given for the pp -> top anti-top j + X process at the LHC with sqrt(s)=8 TeV. Four years ago, one of us introduced a novel subtraction scheme for the evaluation of double-real radiation contributions to cross sections at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD. This approach, named SecToR Improved Phase sPacE for Real radiation (STRIPPER), has already found several non-trivial applications. In particular, it has allowed for the determination of NNLO corrections to hadronic top-quark pair production, fully differential top-quark decays, inclusive semileptonic charmless b-quark decays, associated Higgs boson and jet production in gluon fusion, muon decay spin asymmetry, and t-channel single-top production. Common to these calculations was the use of conventional dimensional regularization (CDR). In this publication, we present a complete formulation of the subtraction scheme for arbitrary processes with any number of colored partons in the final state, and up to two partons in the initial state. Furthermore, we modify the integrated subtraction terms of the double-real radiation to enable the introduction of the 't Hooft-Veltman version of dimensional regularization (HV), in which resolved states are four-dimensional. We present the two-loop virtual amplitudes for the production of a top-quark pair in gluon fusion. The evaluation method is based on a numerical solution of differential equations for master integrals in function of the quark velocity and scattering angle starting from a boundary at high-energy. The results are given for the renormalized infrared finite remainders on a large grid and have recently been used in the calculation of the total cross sections at the next-to-next-to-leading order. For convenience, we also give the known results for the quark annihilation case on the same grid. Outside of the kinematical range covered by the grid, we provide threshold and high-energy expansions. From expansions of the two-loop virtual amplitudes, we determine the threshold behavior of the total cross sections at next-to-next-to-leading order for the quark annihilation and gluon fusion channels including previously unknown constant terms. We evaluate the next-to-next-to-leading order soft function for the production of a massive color octet state at rest in the collision of two massless colored partons in either the fundamental or the adjoint representation. The main application of our result is the determination of the threshold expansion of the heavy-quark pair-production cross sections in the quark annihilation and gluon fusion channels. We extend the Helac-Dipoles package with the implementation of a new subtraction formalism, first introduced by Nagy and Soper in the formulation of an improved parton shower. We discuss a systematic, semi-numerical approach for the evaluation of the integrated subtraction terms for both massless and massive partons, which provides the missing ingredient for a complete implementation. In consequence, the new scheme can now be used as part of a complete NLO QCD calculation for processes with arbitrary parton masses and multiplicities. We assess its overall performance through a detailed comparison with results based on Catani-Seymour subtraction. The production of four bottom quarks is an important benchmark channel for Higgs analyses and searches for new physics at the LHC. We report on the calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the process pp -> b anti-b b anti-b + X with the HELAC-NLO automated framework, and present results for inclusive cross sections and differential distributions. We discuss the impact of the higher-order corrections and, in particular, the effect of the bottom quark mass. In addition, we provide an estimate of the theoretical uncertainty from the variation of the renormalisation and factorisation scales and the parton distribution functions. The results are obtained with a new subtraction formalism for real radiation at next-to-leading order, implemented in the HELAC-DIPOLES package., Comment: 13 pages, 6 tables, 4 figures

Based on the OPP technique and the HELAC framework, HELAC-1LOOP is a program that is capable of numerically evaluating QCD virtual corrections to scattering amplitudes. We report on the calculation of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the production of ttbar pairs in association with two hard jets at the Fermilab TeVatron and CERN Large Hadron Collider. Results for the integrated and differential cross sections are given. The corrections with respect to leading order are negative and moderate. A study of the scale dependence of our NLO predictions indicates that the residual theoretical uncertainty, due to higher order corrections, is 21% for the TeVatron and 15% for the LHC. In case of the TeVatron, the forward-backward asymmetry of the top quark is calculated for the first time at next-to-leading order. With the inclusive selection of cuts, this asymmetry amounts to A_FB = -10.3% at leading order and A_FB = -4.6% at next-to-leading order. Using the recently introduced STRIPPER approach to double-real radiation, we evaluate the total cross sections for the main partonic channels of the next-to-next-to leading order contributions to top quark pair production in hadronic collisions: gg -> ttgg, gg -> ttqq, qq -> ttgg, qq -> ttq'q', q' != q. The results are given as Laurent expansions in epsilon, the parameter of dimensional regularization, at a number of m/ECM values spreading the entire variation range, with m the mass of the top quark and ECM the center-of-mass energy. We describe the details of our implementation and demonstrate its main properties: pointwise convergence and efficiency. We also prove the cancellation of leading divergences after inclusion of the double-virtual and real-virtual contributions. A general subtraction scheme, STRIPPER (SecToR Improved Phase sPacE for real Radiation), is derived for the evaluation of next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD contributions from double-real radiation to processes with at least two particles in the final state at leading order. The result is a Laurent expansion in the parameter of dimensional regularization, the coefficients of which should be evaluated by numerical Monte Carlo integration. We report the results of a next-to-leading order simulation of top quark pair production in association with two jets. With our inclusive cuts, we show that the corrections with respect to leading order are negative and small, reaching 11%. The error obtained by scale variation is of the same order. We briefly review the recent progress in the study of higher order corrections to hadron scattering processes involving top quark pairs in the final state. We present the achievements of the last years of the experimental and theoretical groups working on hadronic cross section measurements at the low energy e+e- colliders in Beijing, Frascati, Ithaca, Novosibirsk, Stanford and Tsukuba and on tau decays. We sketch the prospects in these fields for the years to come. We emphasise the status and the precision of the Monte Carlo generators used to analyse the hadronic cross section measurements obtained as well with energy scans as with radiative return, to determine luminosities and tau decays. We derive the complete set of velocity-enhanced terms in the expansion of the total cross section for heavy-quark pair production in hadronic collisions at next-to-next-to-leading order. Our expression takes into account the effects of soft-gluon emission as well as that of potential-gluon exchanges. We present the results of a next-to-leading order calculation of QCD corrections to the production of an on-shell top-anti-top quark pair in association with two flavored b-jets. Besides studying the total cross section and its scale dependence, we give several differential distributions. Where comparable, our results agree with a previous analysis. While the process under scrutiny is of major relevance for Higgs boson searches at the LHC, we use it to demonstrate the ability of our system built around Helac-Phegas to tackle complete calculations at the frontier of current studies for the LHC. On the technical side, we show how the virtual corrections are efficiently computed with Helac-1Loop, based on the OPP method and the reduction code CutTools, using reweighting and Monte Carlo over color configurations and polarizations. As far as the real corrections are concerned, we use the recently published Helac-Dipoles package. In connection with improvements of the latter, we give the last missing integrated dipole formulae necessary for a complete implementation of phase space restriction dependence in the massive dipole subtraction formalism., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables. We derive the threshold-resummed total cross section for heavy quark production in hadronic collisions accurate to next-to-next-to-leading logarithm, employing recent advances on soft anomalous dimension matrices for massive pair production in the relevant kinematic limit. We also derive the relation between heavy quark threshold resummations for fixed pair kinematics and the inclusive cross section. As a check of our results, we have verified that they reproduce all poles of the color-averaged q\bar{q} -> t\bar{t} amplitudes at two loops, noting that the latter are insensitive to the color-antisymmetric terms of the soft anomalous dimension., Comment: 18 pages; Expanded discussion, added references. We extend the massless dipole formalism of Catani and Seymour, as well as its massive version as developed by Catani, Dittmaier, Seymour and Trocsanyi, to arbitrary helicity eigenstates of the external partons. We modify the real radiation subtraction terms only, the primary aim being an improved efficiency of the numerical Monte Carlo integration of this contribution as part of a complete next-to-leading order calculation. In consequence, our extension is only applicable to unpolarized scattering. Upon summation over the helicities of the emitter pairs, our formulae trivially reduce to their original form. We implement our extension within the framework of Helac-Phegas, and give some examples of results pertinent to recent studies of backgrounds for the LHC. The code is publicly available. We uncover a contribution to the NLO/NLL threshold resummed total cross section for top quark pair production at hadron colliders, which has not been taken into account in earlier literature. We derive this contribution - the difference between the singlet and octet hard (matching) coefficients - in exact analytic form. The numerical impact of our findings on the Sudakov resummed cross section turns out to be large, and comparable in size to the current estimates for the theoretical uncertainty of the total cross section. We present the first exact analytic result for all partonic channels contributing to the total cross section for the production of a pair of heavy flavors in hadronic collisions in NLO QCD. We present the first calculation of the two-loop electroweak fermionic correction to the flavour-dependent effective weak-mixing angle for bottom quarks, sin^2 theta_{eff}^{b anti-b}. For the evaluation of the missing two-loop vertex diagrams, two methods are employed, one based on a semi-numerical Bernstein-Tkachov algorithm and the second on asymptotic expansions in the large top-quark mass. A third method based on dispersion relations is used for checking the basic loop integrals. We derive the two-loop corrections to Bhabha scattering from heavy fermions using dispersion relations. The double-box contributions are expressed by three kernel functions. Convoluting the perturbative kernels with fermionic threshold functions or with hadronic data allows to determine numerical results for small electron mass m_e, combined with arbitrary values of the fermion mass m_f in the loop, $m_e^2<

We compute the virtual O(alpha_s^2) fermionic contributions to the charm quark mass dependent matrix elements of the B -> X_s gamma decay. In the case of a massless quark loop insertion into the gluon propagator, our result obtained as an expansion in z=m_c^2/m_b^2 and an exact expression in terms of multi-fold MB integrals, confirms the findings of Bieri, Greub and Steinhauser [19]. We present the two-loop virtual QCD corrections to the production of heavy quarks in the quark--anti-quark--annihilation channel in the limit when all kinematical invariants are large compared to the mass of the heavy quark. We evaluate the two-loop corrections to Bhabha scattering from fermion loops in the context of pure Quantum Electrodynamics. The differential cross section is expressed by a small number of Master Integrals with exact dependence on the fermion masses me, mf and the Mandelstam invariants s,t,u. We determine the limit of fixed scattering angle and high energy, assuming the hierarchy of scales me^2 << mf^2 << s,t,u. The numerical result is combined with the available non-fermionic contributions. Combining our results for various O(alpha_s^2) corrections to the weak radiative B-meson decay, we are able to present the first estimate of the branching ratio at the next-to-next-to-leading order in QCD. We find BR(B -> X_s gamma) = (3.15 +_ 0.23) x 10^-4 for E_gamma > 1.6 GeV in the B-meson rest frame. The four types of uncertainties: non-perturbative (5%), parametric (3%), higher-order (3%) and m_c-interpolation ambiguity (3%) have been added in quadrature to obtain the total error., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. Recently exact results for the complete electroweak two-loop contributions to the effective weak mixing angle were published. This paper illustrates the techniques used for this computation, in particular the methods for evaluating the loop diagrams and the proper definition of Z-pole observables at next-to-next-to-leading order. Numerical results are presented in terms of simple parametrization formulae and compared in detail with a previous result of an expansion up to next-to-leading order in the top-quark mass. We present the complete bosonic contributions to the effective weak mixing angle, $\seff$, at the two-loop level in the electroweak interactions. We find their size to be about three times smaller than inferred from simple estimates from lower orders. In particular, for a Higgs boson mass, $M_H$, of 100 GeV they amount to $4 \times 10^{-6}$, and drop down by about an order of magnitude for $M_H = 200$ GeV. We estimate the intrinsic error of the theory prediction of $\seff$ to be $4.7 \times 10^{-5}$., Comment: 9 pages, 1 figure

Using a new result for the first moment of the hadronic production cross section at order ${\cal O}(\alpha_s^3)$, and new data on the $J/\psi$ and $\psi'$ resonances for the charm quark, we determine the \msb masses of the charm and bottom quarks to be $\bar{m}_c(\bar{m}_c) = 1.295 \pm 0.015$ GeV and $\bar{m}_b(\bar{m}_b) = 4.205 \pm 0.058$ GeV. We assume that the continuum contribution to the sum rules is adequately described by pQCD. While we observe a large reduction of the perturbative error, the shifts induced by the theoretical input are very small. The main change in the central value of $m_c$ is related to the experimental data. We present the values of the complete set of planar four-point Master Integrals needed for massive Bhabha scattering in the limit of fixed angle and high energy at the two-loop level. The integrals have been calculated using direct expansions of Mellin-Barnes representations, followed by a resummation of resulting harmonic series., Comment: 19 pages, 2 figures

We confirm by explicit computation the conjectured all-orders iteration of planar maximally supersymmetric N=4 Yang-Mills theory in the nontrivial case of five-point two-loop amplitudes. We compute the required unitarity cuts of the integrand and evaluate the resulting integrals numerically using a Mellin--Barnes representation and the automated package of ref.~[1]. This confirmation of the iteration relation provides further evidence suggesting that N=4 gauge theory is solvable., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures
