International audience; Collective light scattering (CLS) has been recently extended to the observation of Hall effect thruster plasmas. A better understanding of the physics of Hall thrusters is key to improving thruster operation and lifetimes. In particular, the origins of thruster phenomena such as anomalous electron transport need to be determined. A high-performance CLS diagnostic has therefore been developed for identifying and measuring electron density fluctuations in the thruster, at millimetric length scales and MHz frequencies. Such modes are believed to play a role in anomalous transport, and experiments so far performed have provided information on their dispersion relations, amplitude and directivity. A better understanding of turbulent transport in a tokamak plasma requires precise comparisons between experimental observation and theoretical prediction of micro-turbulence characteristics. The repartition of fluctuation energy over different spatial scales, which contains detailed information about the character of underlying instabilities and the mechanisms involved in energy transfer between different scales, is one of the few quantities allowing a high detail comparison. The present article reports the investigation performed on the Tore Supra tokamak on the wavenumber spectrum of micro-turbulence using Doppler backscattering. The theoretical approach consists of the derivation of spectral models that include interactions between fluctuations and large scale flow structures.

8. Recent results on turbulence and MHD activity achieved by reflectometry

Over the last years, owing to hardware progress and the development of new methods, reflectometry has become a common diagnostic on plasma fusion devices. This paper presents some results obtained with reflectometry on transport, turbulence and magnetohydrodynamic (MHD). The emphasis is put on some new results from Tore-Supra. Combining the density profile and fluctuation measurement, it was shown on Tore-Supra that the particle pinch inside the q = 1 surface is close to the neoclassical value in ohmic plasma, while the observed small diffusion is in agreement with a very low level of density fluctuations inside the q = 1 surface. In β scaling experiments, no change in the fluctuation levels was found on Tore-Supra, in agreement with the observation of weak confinement degradation with increasing β. Zonal flows have been detected by Doppler reflectometry in ASDEX-U and with correlation reflectometry in T-10. On Tore-Supra, a fast decrease in the density fluctuation level at high poloidal wavenumbers was measured with Doppler reflectometry, suggesting a minor role of electron temperature gradient driven modes. Various forms of Alfven eigenmodes (toroidal Alfven eigenmodes, Alfven cascades and possibly beta Alfven eigenmodes) have been detected with reflectometry in TFTR, JET and Tore-Supra. The density fluctuations induced by the mode were found to be higher on the high-field side.

9. Quasi-optical Gaussian beam tracing to evaluate Doppler backscattering conditions

Microwave beam backscattering near the cut-off layer appears to be the most interesting diagnostic to observe density fluctuation time evolution for a given localization in the plasma and at a defined wave vector. It also provides perpendicular plasma velocity. Scattering only occurs when the Bragg selection rule is fulfilled, i.e. when the scattering wave vector is almost perpendicular to the magnetic field. In order to evaluate these scattering conditions, ray tracing is required. 3D geometry is necessary to evaluate the angle between the magnetic field and the wave vector at the reflection. The ripple effect on the iso-index layer curve cannot be neglected. Scattering localization and wave vector resolution can be approached if single ray tracing is replaced with quasi-optical beam tracing. Optical propagation is still considered in the WKB approximation but the beam is described as multiple connected rays. The beam radial expansion due to diffraction is well described. This approach allows one to compute beam parameters for all data acquisitions (50 triggers per shot) and all shots (40 shots per day) during the following night on a recent personal computer with MatLab©.

Using a light scattering technique, we find that large density fluctuations in an air jet are clustered in time. A phase-space embedding allows us to propose a simple (S-shaped) manifold underlying the phase-space structure. In this context the temporal complexity naturally arises as stochastic fluctuations are added to the deterministic part of the model.

International audience; In recent numerical, theoretical, and experimental papers, the short-scale electron cyclotron drift instability (ECDI) has been studied as a possible contributor to the anomalous electron current observed in Hall thrusters. In this work, features of the instability, in the presence of a zero-electron emission material at the thruster exit plane, are analyzed using coherent Thomson scattering. Limiting the electron emission at the exit plane alters the localization of the accelerating electric field and the expected drift velocity profile, which in turn modifies the amplitude and localization of the ECDI. The resulting changes to the standard thruster operation are expected to favor an increased contribution by the ECDI to electron current. Such an operation is associated with a degradation of thruster performance and stability.

Équipe 107 : Physique des plasmas chauds; International audience; Collective Thomson scattering experiments reveal the presence of high-frequency, axial electron density fluctuations at millimetric wavelengths in the Hall thruster plasma. The properties of these fluctuations are investigated experimentally and via linear kinetic theory. The relative drift of electrons and ions in the axial direction is found to be insufficient to cause excitation of the observed mode. Instead, the mode is determined to be a two-stream instability arising due to the velocity difference between singly and doubly charged ion populations in the plume.

Des modèles linéaires et des simulations PIC ont montré que cette mobilité était liée à la présence dune fluctuation à léchelle millimétrique dans la direction azimutale du canal du propulseur. Des observations par diffusion collective ont confirmé la présence de ces instabilités. Ces mêmes observations ont montré la présence dune autre fluctuation présente aux mêmes échelles, mais principalement dans la direction axiale du propulseur. Les modèles linéaires montrent que cette fluctuation a une nature différente de celle de linstabilité azimutale.

15. Density fluctuations at high density in the ergodic divertor configuration of Tore Supra

The effect of the ergodic divertor on the plasma edge in Tore Supra is to enhance the perpendicular transport through ergodization of the magnetic field lines [Ph. Ghendrih et al., Contrib. Plasma Phys. 32 (3&4) (1992) 179]. Nevertheless, the hot spots observed on the divertor plates during ergodic divertor operation indicate that the cross-field transport driven by the fluctuations is still playing an important role, although measurements by CO 2 laser scattering and reflectometry show a decrease of the turbulence level [J. Payan, X. Garbet, J.H. Chatenet et al., Nucl. Fusion 35 (1995) 1357; P. Beyer, X. Garbet, P. Ghendrih, Phys. Plasmas 5 (12) (1998) 4271]. In order to gain more understanding, fluctuation level and poloidal velocity have been measured with a reciprocating Langmuir probe biased to collect the ion saturation current ( j sat ) and with a CO 2 laser scattering diagnostic. Though the relative fluctuation level behaves as previously observed at low density, a new interesting result is that this picture is gradually modified when the density is increased. Both diagnostics observe an increase of δn / n with density in the ergodic region, which is not the usual behavior observed in limiter configuration. This increase is detected on both sides of the E r inversion radius and is therefore also affecting the plasma bulk. Finally, the confinement time is found to follow an L-mode law at all densities indicating that the ergodic divertor does not change the global confinement properties of the plasma.

Collective light scattering measurement is a powerful tool for investigating fluctuations and their relation with anomalous transport since it allows a direct, discriminating analysis of the turbulent scales. This high scale resolution has a counterpart in a poor spatial resolution, but some localization can be recovered allowing us to discriminate edge from core turbulence behavior and to determine turbulence profiles. More information about localization can be obtained using temporal dynamics of the scattered signal when the fluctuation velocity in the poloidal plane is sheared. Making use of the consequently separated Doppler shifts, different technics are used to extract localized information from frequency spectra and from the signal phase derivative. Capabilities of the diagnostic are illustrated by recent results obtained on Tore Supra in different regimes.

17. Turbulence cascade and dynamical exchange between spatial scales

The information exchange dynamics between different spatial scales of a turbulent field is experimentally investigated, with particular reference to the energy cascade process. This is done by use of the collective light scattering (CLS) diagnostic, a new optical setting tuned for the observation of atomic number density fluctuations at macroscopic scales. A two-channel scattering device is described that provides simultaneously the fluctuations at two different spatial scales. The turbulent system is an axisymmetric air jet. With this system, time correlations between signal amplitudes for two different scales show a characteristic time width. This time does not depend on the observed scales: it is close to the turbulence production time. Nevertheless, signal amplitude autocorrelation shows a shorter characteristic time. The autocorrelation time scaling law behaves almost like the eddy turnover time from Kolmogorov theory.

On Tore Supra, the frequency spectra of the turbulent fluctuations often have two peaks centred on some positive and negative values. These two peaks correspond to a poloidal motion of the electrons in opposite directions. In this paper, a criterion is elaborated which allows us to distinguish, in time, the density fluctuations convected in the parallel direction from those in the anti-parallel direction with respect to the analysing wavevector. Two signals are thus extracted out of one. The validity of our model is experimentally checked by comparing the auto-correlation coefficients and the frequency spectra computed for the whole and the separated signals. Consequently, the frequency spectrum is studied in detail as a function of the analysing wavenumber leading to an accurate determination of some plasma properties.

Équipe 107 : Physique des plasmas chauds; International audience; Microturbulence has been implicated in anomalous transport at the exit of the Hall thruster, and recent simulations have shown the presence of an azimuthal wave which is believed to contribute to the electron axial mobility. In this paper, the 3D dispersion relation of this E x B electron drift instability is numerically solved. The mode is found to resemble an ion acoustic mode for low values of the magnetic field, as long as a non-vanishing component of the wave vector along the magnetic field is considered, and as long as the drift velocity is small compared to the electron thermal velocity. In these conditions, an analytical model of the dispersion relation for the instability is obtained and is shown to adequately describe the mode obtained numerically. This model is then fitted on the experimental dispersion relation obtained from the plasma of a Hall thruster by the collective light scattering diagnostic. The observed frequency-wave vector dependences are found to be similar to the dispersion relation of linear theory, and the fit provides a non-invasive measurement of the electron temperature and density.

The Tore-Supra doppler reflectometer (TSDR) aims at measuring the poloidal wave number spectrum (k spectrum) of the density fluctuations. To evaluate the performance and the sensitivity of the TSDR, simulations were made using a global full-wave code. The TSDR modeling with a finite-difference time-domain scheme and the required constraints of the simulation are presented, namely the account of the real size of the system: Distance horn plasma and plasma size. Particular attention is given to the role of the radiation pattern both on the TSDR spatial resolution and the wave number detection.

Backscattering of a microwave beam launched in oblique incidence makes possible measurement of density fluctuations close to the cut-off with a selected wave number k⊥=−2ki, where ki is the beam wave vector at the reflection layer. On the system installed on Tore Supra, the incidence of the Gaussian beam is controlled thanks to a tiltable monostatic antenna. The microwave part of the system is based on a fluctuation reflectometer scheme with heterodyne detection, and the choice of a V band (50–75 GHz) microwave source and O mode polarization is appropriate for typical enhanced plasma regimes (n0=3–7×1019 m−3). Both the scattering wave number k⊥ and the scattering localization r/a can be changed during a shot, owing to the steppable probing frequency and the motorized antenna (tilt angle 0–10°). Heat-related deaths should be somewhat preventable. In France, some prevention measures are activated when minimum and maximum temperatures averaged over three days reach city-specific thresholds. The current thresholds were computed based on a descriptive analysis of past heat waves and on local expert judgement. We tested whether a different method would confirm these thresholds. The study was set in the six cities of Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Nantes, Strasbourg and Limoges between 1973 and 2003. For each city, we estimated the excess in mortality associated with different temperature thresholds, using a generalised additive model, controlling for long-time trends, seasons and days of the week. These models were used to compute the mortality predicted by different percentiles of temperatures. The thresholds were chosen as the percentiles associated with a significant excess mortality. In all cities, there was a good correlation between current thresholds and the thresholds derived from the models, with 0°C to 3°C differences for averaged maximum temperatures. Both set of thresholds were able to anticipate the main periods of excess mortality during the summers of 1973 to 2003. A simple method relying on descriptive analysis and expert judgement is sufficient to define protective temperature thresholds and to prevent heat wave mortality. As temperatures are increasing along with the climate change and adaptation is ongoing, more research is required to understand if and when thresholds should be modified.

The main results of the Tore Supra experimental programme in the years 2007–2008 are reported. They document significant progress achieved in the domain of steady-state tokamak research, as well as in more general issues relevant for ITER and for fusion physics research. Three areas are covered: ITER relevant technology developments and tests in a real machine environment, tokamak operational issues for high power and long pulses, and fusion plasma physics. Results presented in this paper include test and validation of a new, load-resilient concept of ion cycotron resonance heating antenna and of an inspection robot operated under ultra-high vacuum and high temperature conditions; an extensive experimental campaign (5 h of plasma) aiming at deuterium inventory and carbon migration studies; real-time control of sawteeth by electron cyclotron current drive in the presence of fast ion tails; ECRH-assisted plasma start-up studies; dimensionless scalings of transport and turbulence; transport experiments using active perturbation methods; resistive and fast-particle driven MHD studies. The potential role of Tore Supra in the worldwide fusion programme before the start of ITER operation is also discussed.

Based on radar principle reflectometry measures the electron density in magnetic fusion plasma. On Tore-Supra, six reflectometers measure the density profiles and the properties of density fluctuations with good temporal and spatial resolution. Four swept reflectometers from 33 to 155 GHz provide reliable and accurate measurements of the whole density profile from the edge on the outer side up to the inner side. The sweeping time was recently decreased from 20 to 4 µs. Fast profile evolution can be followed owing to high repetition rate.

Turbulence measurements in TORE SUPRA tokamak plasmas have been quantitatively compared to predictions by nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations. For the first time, numerical results simultaneously match within experimental uncertainty (a) the magnitude of effective heat diffusivity, (b) rms values of density fluctuations, and (c) wave-number spectra in both the directions perpendicular to the magnetic field. Moreover, the nonlinear simulations help to revise as an instrumental effect the apparent experimental evidence of strong turbulence anisotropy at spatial scales of the order of ion-sound Larmor radius.

A set of four reflectometers has been installed on Tore‐Supra to measure the density profiles and the properties of density fluctuations with good spatial resolution. Fast swept X‐mode reflectometers covering the range 50 to 155 GHz provide reliable and accurate measurements of the whole density profile from the edge on the outer side up to the core on the high field side even during large and fast profile evolution. Precise evaluation of the density profile is crucial for particle transport studies. A particular feature, a local peaking, has been observed in the core during ohmic discharge. Density fluctuations are measured with three different techniques. The classical fixed frequency method looks at large scale fluctuations (kr < 3 cm−1) . It measures the radial profile of fluctuations and can detect density perturbation associated to high frequency modes. A new method has been validated to measure the radial profile of small scale density fluctuations from fast FM‐CW phase reflected signal. This method could also retrieve the radial wavenumber spectrum. The last method Doppler reflectometry is based on back scattering. It measures the poloidal rotation and fluctuations amplitude at different poloidal wave numbers (3 < kθ < 20 cm−1). This collection of diagnostics achieves complementary measurements from the low to the high field side of the discharge and from large to small scale.

Collective (or coherent) Thomson scattering has recently emerged as an important tool for identifying and characterizing certain instabilities in Hall thrusters. Plasma instabilities in electric thrusters are implicated in diverse phenomena, including reduced efficiency, lifetime and anomalous particle transport. This work discusses the main features of the collective scattering diagnostic PRAXIS, and recent applications of the diagnostic to study the nature of microturbulence at different thruster operating regimes. Early measurements show the presence of a small-scale azimuthal instability may be linked with regimes of unstable thruster operation.

International audience; The effect of the collective light scattering diagnostic transfer function is considered in the context of the dispersion relation of the unstable E×B mode previously reported. This transfer function is found to have a contribution to the measured frequencies and mode amplitudes which is more or less significant depending on the measurement wavenumbers and angles. After deconvolution, the experimental data are found to be possibly compatible with the idea that the mode frequency in the jet frame (after subtraction of the Doppler effect due to the plasma motion along the thruster axis) is independent of the orientation of the wave vector in the plane orthogonal to the local magnetic field.

International audience; Collective scattering measurements have been conducted on the plasma of a Hall thruster, in which the electron density fluctuations are fully characterized by the dynamic form factor. The dynamic form factor amplitude distribution has been measured depending on the k-vector spatial and frequency components at different locations. Fluctuations are seen as propagating waves. The largest amplitude mode propagates nearly along the cross-field direction but at a phase velocity that is much smaller than the E×B drift velocity. Refined directional analysis of this largest amplitude mode shows a thin angular emission diagram with a mean direction that is not strictly along the E×B direction but at small angles near it. The deviation is oriented toward the anode in the (E,E×B) plane and toward the exterior of the thruster channel in the (B,E×B) plane. The density fluctuation rate is on the order of 1%. These experimentally determined directional fluctuation characteristics are discussed with regard to the linear kinetic theory model and particle-in-cell simulation results.

a quiescent runaway beam carrying the entire electrical current appears to develop in some cases. Developments in plasma control have benefited from progress in individual controller design and have evolved steadily towards controller integration, mostly within an environment supervised by a tokamak profile control simulator. TCV has demonstrated effective wall conditioning with ECRH in He in support of the preparations for JT-60SA operation. © 2017 Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne., in particular, the double decay length in L-mode limited plasmas was found to be replaced by a single length at high SOL resistivity. Experiments on disruption mitigation by massive gas injection and electron-cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH) have begun in earnest, in parallel with studies of runaway electron generation and control, in both stable and disruptive conditions, The TCV tokamak is augmenting its unique historical capabilities (strong shaping, strong electron heating) with ion heating, additional electron heating compatible with high densities, and variable divertor geometry, in a multifaceted upgrade program designed to broaden its operational range without sacrificing its fundamental flexibility. The TCV program is rooted in a three-pronged approach aimed at ITER support, explorations towards DEMO, and fundamental research. A 1 MW, tangential neutral beam injector (NBI) was recently installed and promptly extended the TCV parameter range, with record ion temperatures and toroidal rotation velocities and measurable neutral-beam current drive. ITER-relevant scenario development has received particular attention, with strategies aimed at maximizing performance through optimized discharge trajectories to avoid MHD instabilities, such as peeling-ballooning and neoclassical tearing modes. Experiments on exhaust physics have focused particularly on detachment, a necessary step to a DEMO reactor, in a comprehensive set of conventional and advanced divertor concepts. The specific theoretical prediction of an enhanced radiation region between the two X-points in the low-field-side snowflake-minus configuration was experimentally confirmed.
