The White Sands pupfish (Cyprinodon tularosa), endemic to New Mexico in Southwestern North America, is of conservation concern due in part to invasive species, chemical pollution, and groundwater withdrawal. Herein, we developed a draft reference genome and use it to provide biological insights into the evolution and conservation of C. tularosa. We used our assembly to localize microsatellite markers previously used to demarcate evolutionary significant units (ESU), quantified genomic divergence and transposable element profiles between species, and compared C. tularosa genomic diversity related species. Our de novo assembly of PacBio Sequel II error‐corrected reads resulted in a 1.08 Gb draft genome with a contig N50 of 1.4 Mb and 25,260 annotated protein coding genes, including 95% of the expected Actinopterygii conserved complete single‐copy orthologues. Many of the C. tularosa microsatellite markers used for conservation assessments fell within, or near, genes and exhibited a pattern of increased heterozygosity near genic areas compared to those in intergenic regions. Nuclear alignments between these two species revealed 193 genes contained in rapidly diverging tracts; transposable element profiles were largely concordant and suggest a shared, rapid expansion of LINE and Gypsy elements. Genome‐wide heterozygosity was markedly lower in C. tularosa compared to estimates from other related species, probably because of smaller long‐term effective population sizes constrained by their isolated and limited habitat. The Arabian pupfish, Aphanius dispar, is a euryhaline fish inhabiting both inland nearly-freshwater desert ponds and highly saline Red Sea coastal lagoons of the Arabian Peninsula. Desert ponds and coastal lagoons, located respectively upstream and at the mouths of dry riverbeds ("wadies"), have been found to potentially become connected during periods of intense rainfall, which could allow the fish to migrate between these different habitats. Flash floods would therefore flush Arabian pupfish out to sea, requiring a rapid acclimation to a greater than 40 ppt change in salinity. To investigate the molecular pathways of salinity acclimation during such events, a Red Sea coastal lagoon and a desert pond population were sampled, with the latter exposed to a rapid increase in water salinity. Changes in branchial gene expression were investigated via genome-wide transcriptome measurements over time from 6 h to 21 days. The two natural populations displayed basal differences in genes related to ion transport, osmoregulation and immune system functions. These mechanisms were also differentially regulated in seawater transferred fish, revealing their crucial role in long-term adaptation. Other processes were only transiently activated shortly after the salinity exposure, including cellular stress response mechanisms, such as molecular chaperone synthesis and apoptosis. Tissue remodelling processes were also identified as transient, but took place later in the timeline, suggesting their importance to long-term acclimation as they likely equip the fish with lasting adaptations to their new environment. The alterations in branchial functional pathways displayed by Arabian pupfish in response to salinity increases are diverse. These reveal a large toolkit of molecular processes important for adaptation to hyperosmolarity that allow for successful colonization to a wide variety of different habitats. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Populations of the West African killifish, traditionally identified as Aphyosemion maeseni Poll, 1941, have been classified for the last four decades in the tribe Callopanchacini. However, in a recent study, populations of this widespread species have been placed in a new genus and species, Nimbapanchax leucopterygius, while the unique holotype that Poll used to describe Aphyosemion maeseni has been referred to the genus Epiplatys. Comparison of 3D reconstruction images of the holotype of A. maeseni with cleared and stained specimens of several African Aplocheiloid taxa revealed that: the morphology of the epineural ribs and the neural processes of vertebrae 5-7 are typical of Callopanchacines and not like those of Epiplatys. Furthermore, the neural process of the second vertebra is fan-shaped, which is a synapomorphic characteristic of the recently described genus, Nimbapanchax. As the morphology of the holotype of A. maeseni and that of examined specimens of N. leucopterygius prove highly concordant and we are unable to record any morphological characteristic that would diagnose each as a member of a distinct taxon, we propose N. leucopterygius to be a junior synonym of A. maeseni. Aphanius fasciatus (Valenciennes, 1821), is a cyprinodontid euryhaline fish occur in many brackish water habitats along the Mediterranean coasts. The current study aims to update the range of A. fasciatus (Mediterranean Killifish, South European Toothcarp) along river estuaries and lagoon systems of Mediterranean coast of Turkey, and to determine its length–weight relationship. A total of 15 sites were surveyed from November 2014 to June 2017. Altogether, 69 specimens were sampled and measured from different systems. Extinctions are occurring at an unprecedented rate as a consequence of human activities. Vertebrates constitute the best-known group of animals, and thus the group for which there are more accurate estimates of extinctions. Among them, freshwater fishes are particularly threatened and many species are declining. Here we report the extinction of an endemic freshwater fish of Mexico, the Catarina pupfish Megupsilon aporus , the sole species of the genus Megupsilon. We present a synopsis of the discovery and description of the species, the threats to, and degradation of, its habitat, and the efforts to maintain the species in captivity before it became extinct in 2014. The loss of the Catarina pupfish has evolutionary and ecological implications, and highlights the crisis of freshwater fish extinctions. It is a warning of the likely fate of more than 200 freshwater fish species threatened with extinction in Mexico. To save these species, the country urgently needs a national strategy to articulate a bold conservation effort, with better policies on ecosystem management and water use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Reproductive characteristics of Aphanius isfahanensis, an Iranian endemic Cyprinodontid fish in the Zayandehrud River were examined. Samples were taken monthly, from June 2016 to May 2017. Some 485 specimens (245 females, 240 males) were caught by a hand net. Age of males and females ranged from 0+ to 2+ years. The largest female and male in total length and weight was 5.36 cm, 2.39 g and 4.49 cm, 1.56 g, respectively. The overall sex ratio was 1 M:1F (p > 0.05). The highest mean gonadosomatic index in females and males was in May (19.19), and July (3.77), respectively. Oocyte diameter ranged from 0.12 to 1.40 mm, and monthly mean oocyte diameter were significantly different (P < 0.05). The minimum, maximum, and average absolute fecundity was 7, 250 and 120 ± 5SD, respectively. The relative fecundity was 90 ± 30 egg/g body weight. Macroscopic analysis of gonads and gonadosomatic index (GSI) values showed that spawning of A. isfahanensis occurs from April to July with a peak in May and June. Aphanius isfahanensis is a group synchronous spawner and produces more than one oocyte clutch in a single reproductive season. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We studied the feeding ecology of an endemic cyprinodontid fish, Aphanius marassantensis (Kızılırmak Toothcarp), with special emphasis on seasonal and ontogenetic diet shift. The dietary composition revealed an omnivorous diet with great seasonal and ontogenetic variation. Cladocera and Calanoid Copepods (Diaptomus sp.) dominated the diet in Spring and Summer, whereas the food items of plant origin e.g. filamentous algae and diatoms were the most important components in Autumn and Winter. An ontogenetic diet shift was also demonstrated. While the feeding of juveniles was based mostly on planktonic organisms, adult individuals preferred larger prey taxa, such as Gammarus sp. and Gastropods. There was no significant sex-related variation in feeding with the exception for the volume of gut content. The investigation on the feeding strategy of A. marassantensis suggested a generalised feeding pattern with some specialised individuals. This generalist feeding habits may account for the well-established population of this species in a big reservoir under coexistence of two non-native fish species, Pseudorasbora parva and Atherina boyeri. Otolith morphology in the tooth-carp/killifish genus Aphanius is a source of informative taxonomic characters at both the species and population level. Most work on otoliths has focused on adult specimens, while evidence of ontogenetic variation is rarely provided. In this study we describe the development of otolith morphology during the early life stages of an endangered and endemic species, the Fars tooth-carp Aphanius farsicus from southern Iran. The study material comprises 34 larvae and early juveniles representing nine different developmental stages (0-120 days post hatching), all reared under the same laboratory conditions. The results reveal (i) a significant correlation between standard length and otolith size (length) in larval and early juvenile stages, (ii) clear differences in otolith morphology between larvae/early juveniles and adults, and (iii) a temporal link between the appearance of the sulcus on the otolith’s inner face and the emergence of the dorsal and anal fins. Our results indicate that otoliths of Aphanius can be recognized as originating from larval or early juvenile fish based on their short rostrum and antirostrum lengths and wide excisura, in addition to their small size. These immature otoliths are, however, not diagnostic at the species level in A. farsicus, nor most probably in other species of tooth-carp. The outcome of our study is also of interest to palaeontologists working with fossil killifish otoliths, as it can help avoid misinterpretation of ancient species diversity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Habitat choice is defined as a nonrandom distribution of genotypes in different microhabitats. Therefore, it could exert a great impact on the genetic variance of natural populations by promoting genetic divergence, local adaptation, and may even lead to sympatric speciation. Despite this potential role in micro- and macro-evolutionary processes, there is little empirical evidence that the various genotypes within a population may differ in habitat choice-related behaviors. Here, we tested whether habitat choice may have contributed to genetic divergence within a local population of the Mediterranean killifish Aphanius fasciatus, which emerged between groups inhabiting microhabitats with different oxygen concentrations during previous field studies. In a first experiment, we studied the distribution of individuals in conditions of hypoxia and normoxia to test whether they had a different ability to shy away from a hypoxic environment; in a second experiment, we analyzed the individual behavior of fish separately in the two conditions, to verify whether they showed peculiar behavioral responses linked to a possible differential distribution. We then analyzed the six allozyme loci, whose allelic and genotypic frequencies were significantly divergent in the previous studies. In the first test, we found that the distribution of the two homozygote genotypes of the glucose-6-phosphate isomerase-1 locus ( GPI-1) was significantly different between the hypoxic and the normoxic conditions. During the second test, all individuals were more active in hypoxic conditions, but the two GPI-1 homozygotes showed a significant difference in time spent performing surface breathing, which was consistent with their distribution observed in the first experiment. These results provide evidence that individual behavioral traits, related to genetic features, may lead to a nonrandom distribution of genotypes in heterogeneous although contiguous microhabitats and, consequently, that habitat choice can play a significant role in driving the micro-evolutionary dynamics of this species. Environmental stress can promote evolutionary forces and genetic divergence, but at which microgeographic scale divergence may arise, even in the presence of gene flow, remains poorly known. We studied the effects of eutrophication in a saltwork over a period of 6 years on the gene pool of a local population of the Mediterranean killifishAphanius fasciatus, a species resistant to extreme conditions. We hypothesised that during eutrophication, the environmental stress may have acted differently along a gradient of salinity and oxygen concentration in promoting evolutionary forces, generating divergence over a small spatial scale (2 km), despite gene flow. We analysed 24 allozymes in three temporal samples each composed of four spatial sub-samples, collected along the gradient, during eutrophication (2003 and 2005) and after a recovery project (2008). The results suggest that eutrophication promoted natural selection, originating a genetic cline on one locus (adenosine deaminase) significantly linked to salinity and oxygen concentration. Together with selection, both genetic drift and gene flow contributed to shaping the genetic structure under stress by further promoting the genetic heterogeneity and giving rise to deficits of heterozygotes as a secondary effect of the divergence. Environmental stress thus increased diversification, with the effects of selection and drift prevailing on gene flow. When environmental stress was relaxed (2008), allele and genotype frequencies became homogeneous, likely because under less extreme conditions the gene flow prevailed. These results improve our understanding of microgeographic divergence, and highlight the role of environmental stress in moulding microevolutionary dynamics and genetic patterns of animal populations. The genetic architecture of adaptation is fundamental to understanding the mechanisms and constraints governing diversification. However, most case studies focus on loss of complex traits or parallel speciation in similar environments. It is still unclear how the genetic architecture of these local adaptive processes compares to the architecture of evolutionary transitions contributing to morphological and ecological novelty. Here, we identify quantitative trait loci ( QTL) between two trophic specialists in an excellent case study for examining the origins of ecological novelty: a sympatric radiation of pupfishes endemic to San Salvador Island, Bahamas, containing a large-jawed scale-eater and a short-jawed molluscivore with a skeletal nasal protrusion. These specialized niches and trophic traits are unique among over 2000 related species. Measurements of the fitness landscape on San Salvador demonstrate multiple fitness peaks and a larger fitness valley isolating the scale-eater from the putative ancestral intermediate phenotype of the generalist, suggesting that more large-effect QTL should contribute to its unique phenotype. We evaluated this prediction using an F2 intercross between these specialists. We present the first linkage map for pupfishes and detect significant QTL for sex and eight skeletal traits. Large-effect QTL contributed more to enlarged scale-eater jaws than the molluscivore nasal protrusion, consistent with predictions from the adaptive landscape. The microevolutionary genetic architecture of large-effect QTL for oral jaws parallels the exceptional diversification rates of oral jaws within the San Salvador radiation observed over macroevolutionary timescales and may have facilitated exceptional trophic novelty in this system. The name killifish refers to the oviparous secondary freshwater fishes in the order Cyprinodontiformes. Killifishes are abundant in Mexico and are represented by four extant families, Rivulidae, Profundulidae, Fundulidae and Cyprinodontidae, comprising > 50 species in a wide variety of habitats. This paper reviews the current classification of the killifishes of Mexico, as well as aspects of their distribution, biology, ecology and current population conservation status. Inter-population differences in otolith shape, morphology and chemistry have been used effectively as indicators for stock assessment or for recognizing environmental adaptation in fishes. However, the precise parameters that affect otolith morphology remain incompletely understood. Here we provide the first direct support for the hypothesis that inter-population differences in otolith morphology are genetically encoded. The study is based on otolith morphology and two mitochondrial markers (D-loop, 16S rRNA) of three natural populations of Aphanius fasciatus (Teleostei: Cyprinodontidae) from Southeast Tunisia. Otolith and genetic data yielded congruent tree topologies. Divergence of populations likely results from isolation events in the course of the Pleistocene sea level drops. We propose that otolith morphology is a valuable tool for resolving genetic diversity also within other teleost species, which may be important for ecosystem management and conservation of genetic diversity. As reconstructions of ancient teleost fish faunas are often solely based on fossil otoliths, our discoveries may also lead to a new approach to research in palaeontology.

Aphanius dispar (Rüppell, 1829) is a common marine-euryhaline teleost fish in the Near East that has undergone considerable intraspecific differentiation. Otolith morphology is used to analyse the diversity within A. dispar in the Gulf of Oman (Sea of Oman) and the Persian Gulf. A total of 134 individuals from lagoons and inland habitats of Oman, the United Arab Emirates and southern Iran are analysed. The results revealed that otolith traits that are under genetic control are strikingly different from those that are under the influence of environmental factors. A clear spatial structure of the populations is detectable, suggesting that the environmental flexibility of A. dispar, vicariance events during the last glacial maximum (21000-18000 BP), dispersal in the course of the Early Holocene sea-level rise, and Holocene to present-day interruption of gene flow at the Strait of Hormuz have shaped the intraspecific differentiation of A. dispar. These factors may also be responsible for diversification within other marine-euryhaline fishes in the Near East and Mediterranean Sea, and thus the findings can contribute to successful conservation management.

Studies of the taxonomy and present-day distribution of landlocked populations of the killifish Aphanius Nardo, 1827 (Cyprinodontidae) provide a key to understanding their zoogeographic history, and shape conservation strategies and habitat management. Here we report for the first time on the sympatric occurrence of the rare Mesopotamian tooth-carp A. mesopotamicus with a member of the widely distributed common tooth-carp ( A. dispar group). Both were found in the Shadegan Wetland of the Mesopotamian drainage system (Southwestern Iran). External characters of individuals, otolith morphology and molecular data based on the cytochrome b gene confirm species identification. The otolith morphology of A. mesopotamicus , hitherto unknown, is strikingly similar to previously described otoliths of A . cf. pluristriatus from the Khonj stream (Southern Iran), which apparently reflects a close relationship between these recently diverged species. Several of the specimens recovered from the Shadegan Wetland showed intermediate characters in pigmentation, otolith morphology and some morphometric values. These specimens are interpreted as putative hybrids, which is additionally supported by a multivariate analysis of the morphometric data. Previous reports suggest that natural hybridization between species of Aphanius results largely from range overlap and range extension. A virtual distribution map derived from climatic modelling studies based on DIVA-GIS (7.5.0) indicates that sympatry of the A. dispar group and A. mesopotamicus is primarily determined by levels of precipitation during the warmest quarter, and is likely to occur only in Southwestern Iran. Orestias ascotanensis is a killifish endemic to the Ascotán salt pan in the Chilean Altiplano, where it inhabits 12 springs with different degrees of isolation. This species is a suitable model for studying the effect of serial geographical isolations on the differentiation process among populations. The present study examines the genetic variation and structure of the species using mitochondrial DNA control region sequences and eight microsatellite loci, analyzing populations across its distribution range. The evaluation of genetic variation revealed high levels of diversity within the species. The genetic structure analysis showed the existence of four differentiated groups: two groups were formed by the springs located in the northern and southern extremes of the salt pan and two groups were found in the centre of the salt pan. The latter two groups were formed by several springs, most likely as a consequence of the South American summer monsoon that could connect them and allow gene flow. The patterns of genetic differentiation appear to be determined based on the physical isolation of the populations. This isolation may be the result of a combination of factors, including geographical distance, a historical decrease in water levels and altitude differences in the springs of the salt pan. A 13-landmark morphometric truss network system was used to investigate the hypothesis of population fragmentation of Aphanius dispar (Pisces: Cyprinodontidae) from Ahram and Dalaki rivers in Bushehr, south of Iran. A total of sixty specimens were caught from the rivers. Principal component analysis (PCA), Discriminant function analysis (DFA) and clustering analysis (CA) were used to examine morphological differences. The PCA, scatter plot of individual component score between PC1 and PC2, showed that the specimens are grouped into two areas but with high and moderate overlap between two localities. Univariate analysis of variance showed significant differences between the means of the two groups for 42 standardized morphometric measurements out of 78 characters studied. CA indicated different populations of A. dispar in Ahram and Dalaki rivers. These populations of A. dispar are distinguished especially by pre anal, body height, distance from pectoral fin to ventral fin, distance from pectoral fin to anal fin, caudal peduncle length, head length, pre orbital, pre ventral, and dorsal length. Therefore, it is suggested considering these morphologically different populations as distinct stock in the studied rivers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The karyotype of males of two species of the genus Nothobranchius with the lowest diploid numbers was investigated: Nothobranchius rachovi (2 N = 16) and Nothobranchius krysanovi (2 N = 18). For the first time, whole mounts of spread syneptonemal complexes (SC) of these species were obtained and investigated. When the SC was painted with silver nitrate and immunostained with rabbit antibodies against the SCP3 protein, eight and nine homomorphic SCs were detected in the nuclei of class I spermatocytes of N. krysanovi and N. rachovi, respectively. The helminth fauna of the bolson pupfish Cyprinodon atrorus (Osteichthyes: Cyprinodontidae) consisted of 7 helminth taxa collected from 7 localities of Cuatro Ciénegas, a natural area protected by the Mexican government in Coahuila, northern Mexico. The helminth community is described at the infracommunity and component community levels. The acanthoeephalan Atactorhynchus duranguensis was the most prevalent and abundant species. The remaining species were rare and found at low mean abundance values. The observed species richness, individual parasite abundance, and diversity were low at both component community and infracommunity levels. These findings are similar to those found in other freshwater fish species in the Nearctic part of Mexico; however, our study shows that the number of larval forms, in terms of species richness and abundance, is very low in comparison with previous studies in the area. Isolation of the Cuatro Ciénegas basin from the Bravo River (= Grande River) basins is suggested as the main factor determining the depauperate helminth assemblage. The low number of individual larval stages in this fish species is probably due to the lack of piscivorous birds in the area. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The census of natural populations provides relevant information for both conservation purposes and environmental monitoring. In the present work, natural populations of the killifishAphanius fasciatus(Teleostei: Cyprinodontidae) were censused in the Italian territory. The historical distribution of the species was reconstructed with the aid of bibliographic material and museal samples, in order to evaluate the extent of changes in its distribution. Three periods (pre-1990s, 1990s, post-1990s) and five habitat types (lagoons/coastal ponds, saltworks, canals, river mouths, inland water bodies) were considered. Overall, we recorded the presence ofA. fasciatusin 82 localities, the majority of which are lagoons/ponds. The species showed a widespread decline and sometimes local population extinction, due to habitat degradation and competition with the introduced poeciliidGambusia holbrooki. With a few exceptions,A. fasciatusis currently extinct in inland waters, being mainly present in coastal brackish-water habitats. The occurrence of stable populations along the central Tyrrhenian, northern Adriatic, Sardinian and Apulian coastal biotopes is confirmed. The populations of Sicilian inland waters, considered extinct, showed recovery capabilities. In northern Tuscany, where the species was also considered extinct, there are also recent records. From a temporal perspective, the present work shows thatA. fasciatusexperienced population reductions throughout its range in the 1990s, when the species appeared locally extinct, or strongly rarefied, in several localities. Since then, the species recovered in the majority of the native range. However, careful monitoring is needed in order to control the effects of habitat alterations and competition withG. holbrookion natural populations ofA. fasciatus. Given the importance of brackish-water habitats as both biodiversity hotspots and buffer areas against rainfalls and floods,A. fasciatusmay be raised to the status of “umbrella species” with regard to these habitats. Trophic ecology is essential to understand ecosystem functioning and structure and assist biological conservation. Here we investigate, for the first time, the feeding ecology of Aphanius farsicus, a cyprinodontid fish endemic of a single landlocked river basin in central Iran. We sampled monthly a population of this fish species during a year and examined differences in food across seasons, sexes and sizes. Similarly to other cyprinodonts, A. farsicus showed sexual dimorphism and more abundance of females. Size structure and individual condition varied across seasons, with larger fish in spring and better condition in summer and less in winter. We found no empty guts, suggesting that these fish feed all year round due to the warm climate of its native distribution. Farsi toothcarp diet was based on detritus, algae (particularly diatoms, green algae, and cyanobacteria), and small invertebrates. Seasonal variation in diet was more important than variation due to fish size and the Farsi toothcarp consumed more green algae in spring and early summer and more diatoms and insects the rest of the year. Herbivory was considerable, similarly to a few other cyprinodonts, and increased with fish size, particularly because of higher consumption of green algae. As with species composition in diet, season was more important than size in the variation of number, biovolume, mean size, and diversity of prey captured, with higher number, richness and size of prey captured in summer. The ontogenetic diet shift was less marked in this cyprinodont than in many other Aphanius species, probably due to its reduced size and the resource availability of its habitat, but was also shown by size-dependent feeding selectivity for a few invertebrates. The clade of the Iranian freshwater Aphanius species from endorheic and exorheic drainage basins contains three subclades, of which the Aphanius sophiae subclade with seven species is the most specious one. Recently, two previously not known populations of Aphanius were discovered in two isolated basins; one in the Arjan Wetland (Helleh subbasin), and the other in the Semirom spring (Karun Basin), both are located in the Central Zagros Mountains (SW Iran). The objective of this study is to investigate their taxonomic status, to elucidate their phylogenetic relationships and to contribute to future conservation strategies and habitat management of the freshwater species of Aphanius in Iran. Methods include analysis of genetic data based on mtDNA ( cyt b ), combined with meristics, morphometrics, scale sizes ( J -indices) and otolith data. The results based on cyt b clearly indicate that two species are present in the Arjan Wetland, one is closely related to A. sophiae (currently thought to be restricted to the Kor Basin), the other represents Aphanius shirini (previously only known from its type locality Paselari spring). However, significant phenotypic differences are not present between these two species. The second population from the Semirom spring is sister to A. sophiae (Kor Basin) according to cyt b data, but differs significantly from this species with regard to the phenotype. The presence of A. shirini in the Arjan Wetland is most likely be explained by man-made introduction because of the recent droughts. The similarity of the two species present in the Arjan Wetland may be due to phenotypic plasticity, but also hybridization could have played a role. The isolation of populations of A. sophiae is discussed in the context of the active geological history and climate change, and it is likely that their divergence happened in the Early or Middle Holocene (c. 11,700–4000 y. ago). The presence of A. sophiae in the Helleh subbasin and Karun Basin extends the currently known zoogeographic range of this species, which previously has only been reported from the Kor Basin. The article presents the study which examined the rangewide prey species composition of Reddish egrets during the breeding season, as well as the influence of color morphs and colony location on prey composition of the birds in Texas. In the study, chick regurgitate or bolus from the birds' nestlings in Texas, Baja California Sur, Yucatán, Mexico and the Bahamas were collected. Among the prey species are sheepshead minnow (Cyprinodon variegatus) and American shadow goby (Quietula y-cauda).

Morphologically similar populations of Aphanius that are currently considered as A. sophiae inhabit the endorheic Kor River Basin in the Zagros Mountains. Using genetic analysis based on mt DNA ( cytochrome b), combined with examination of morphology (morphometry, meristics, otoliths), we discovered that what is thought to be A. sophiae is actually two distinct species, one of which is described as A. shirini sp. n. The males of the new species can be distinguished from those of all other Iranian inland Aphanius species by having only 7-10 clearly defined white flank bars, which is the lowest number of flank bars among the Iranian inland Aphanius species. Both males and females differ from all other Iranian inland Aphanius species by having a significantly longer caudal peduncle and a smaller dorsal fin depth. Based on the PhyML and Bayesian likelihood trees, A. shirini is sister to A. vladykovi from the Karoun Basin in the Zagros Mountains. Our results indicate that an ancient exorheic Kor River Basin existed in the Late Miocene and Pliocene. The close phylogenetic relationship between A. shirini and A. vladykovi suggests that the pre-Pliocene drainage in the ancient Kor River Basin was directed to the north-west (to the Karoun Basin), and not to the south-east as in the present-day Kor Basin. Both A. shirini and A. vladykovi represent the highest altitude records for Aphanius. We conclude that the splits of A. shirini and A. vladykovi can be linked to tectonic events in the Middle to Late Miocene, which created the highest altitudes (>3000 m) in the Zagros Mountains, and led to isolation of populations. The present-day endorheic Kor Basin is known to have formed in the Late Pleistocene or Early Holocene, and the 'young' age of A. sophiae is clearly related to this history. Abstract: A primarily vicariance-based speciation has been suggested for the killifish genus AphaniusNardo, 1827, but ecological factors are likely to have promoted the speciation processes in addition. Here, we report on the discovery of a unique Aphanius species from Southern Iran and show that also regressive evolution has shaped the present-day diversity of Aphanius. The species is characterized by complete absence of scales and reduction in the biomineralization of hard structures, particularly of the caudal skeleton and jaw teeth. Based on mt-DNA sequences, morphometric and meristic data, osteology, jaw teeth and otoliths, it is described as Aphanius furcatus sp. n. The new species is sympatric with A. dispar (Rüppell, 1829) in salty rivers and hot sulphuric springs in the Hormuzgan Basin (Southern Iran), and is sister taxon to this species plus A. ginaonisHolly, 1929. Based on geological data we estimate that the divergence between the lineages of A. furcatus and A. dispar is about 12–14million years old. We conclude that the reductive phenomena observed in A. furcatus have evolved as an evolutionary response to the extreme habitat conditions in order to save energy (because storage of Ca2+ is not necessary), and to transport oxygen efficiently. This review evaluates the current state of knowledge of influences of body mass, ambient temperature, P, and salinity on routine metabolic rates of members of three families, Fundulidae, Cyprinodontidae, and Poeciliidae, belonging to the order Cyprinodontiformes. The study was motivated by Winberg's (Fisheries Research Board of Canada, Translation Series No. 194. Distributed by the Fisheries Research Board of Canada Biological Station, Nanaimo, BC, ) conclusion that the Cyprinodontiformes (Winberg included only live-bearing poeciliids) generally have lower metabolic rates that do other fishes. Based on available information Winberg's conclusion was borne out that live-bearing freshwater poeciliids show lower than average routine metabolic rates compared to other freshwater fish groups. This is also true of poeciliids from saline waters, and of both freshwater and saline-water members of the related families Fundulidae and Cyprinodontidae. However, considerable variation in metabolic patterns was noted within and among these three families. There were geographic variations between subspecies of some species. Some island groups/species showed lower routine metabolic rates than did allied mainland groups/species. Thermal responses (Q values) in routine metabolic rates of these fishes showed variations with geographic location, P, salinity and size. Values of P were altered among species by temperature, body size/age, and possibly salinity. Influences of ambient salinity on routine metabolic rates of these cyprinodontoid fishes also showed variations with temperature and size/age of individuals. The patterns of metabolic responses in these cyprinodontoid fishes to environmental conditions were generally similar to those of other species. Unfortunately, the available information on these fishes lacks the uniformity that would allow for critical and quantitative comparisons between and among the cyprinodontoids and with other species. How new species arise in the absence of geographic barriers is still poorly understood. Females of two species of pupfish, a specialist scale-eater and a generalist detritivore, coexist in lakes on San Salvador Island, The Bahamas. They recognize males of their own species by visual cues. Female preferences are stronger in the less abundant scale-eater than in the more abundant detritivore, indicating the importance of frequency-dependent selection in the evolution of behavioral mating barriers.We examine cues used in assortative mating in a sympatric species flock of pupfishes (Cyprinodon) from San Salvador Island, The Bahamas. The species are morphologically, genetically, and ecologically distinct. We focus on 2 species, a generalist detritivore and a predator/scale-eater. Experiments show that premating isolation is based primarily on visual cues and is asymmetrical. It is well developed in the less abundant scale-eater but is much less well developed in the more abundant detritivore. Responses of detritivore females from 3 lakes to conspecific and scale-eater males suggest that abundance of the predator also affects development of premating isolating mechanisms in the prey species. This study compared fish longevity, growth, and oxidative stress between normal and deformedAphanius fasciatuscollected from the Gulf of Gabes. For this purpose, fish were collected from control (S1) and polluted (S2) sites in Tunisian coast and percentages of spinal deformities were determined. Oxidative stress biomarkers were also compared between normal and deformed fish, including levels of protein sulfhydryl (SH), malondialdehyde (MDA), and metallothioneins (MT), as well as activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and alkaline phosphatase (AP). Levels of heavy metals (Cd, Cu, and Zn) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) were also measured. Data showed that the highest occurrence of deformities was observed in younger fish and decreased significantly thereafter with age. Chemical analysis demonstrated high levels of heavy metals and PAH at polluted sites compared to a reference location. In deformed fish, a growth perturbation marked by a decrease of growth rate and condition index (CI), a high accumulation of Cd was noted. In addition, oxidative stress marked by changes in the studied biomarkers was observed. Taken together, oxidative stress, diminished longevity, and a disturbance of growth may be considered to be responsible factors contributing to spinal deformities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Owens PupfishCyprinodon radiosusrepresents many of the challenges of managing threatened or endangered species in fragmented refuge populations. All six extant populations of the endangered Owens Pupfish were examined to assess how management practices, including serial translocations and founder events, have influenced the genetic diversity of the species and to make recommendations for future management. Four populations were sampled twice with 3–4 years intervening; two additional populations were sampled once. Populations were genotyped at nine microsatellite loci; estimated effective population sizes ranged from 34.2 to 347.8 individuals based on the linkage disequilibrium method and from 10 to 48 using the sibship assignment method. All of the populations were estimated to have undergone severe bottlenecks, and statistically significant pairwiseFSTvalues increased during the period between sampling. From this data we infer that the individual refuge populations have differentiated and lost genetic diversity and that without intervention they will continue to do so. For the long-term persistence of this species, we recommend founding new populations composed of 30–50 founders from each of the extant populations, regularly translocating up to 10 migrants per generation among stable populations, and maximizing habitat area and quality. Acanthogyrus (Acanthosentis) harmeshoori n. sp. (Quadrigyridae) is described from the Persian tooth-carp, Aphcmius farsicus Teimori, Esmaeili, and Reichenbacher, 2011 (Cyprinodontidae) in the Maharlu Lake basin, southern Iran. Aphanius farsicus is an endemic freshwater fish found in streams and springs that drain into Maharlu Lake. Shiraz, Iran. The new species is the smallest of all the 44 known species of the subgenus Acanthosentis Verma and Datta. 1929, measuring between 0.26 and 1.68 mm in length. It is further distinguished by having a short cylindrical proboscis with very long anterior hooks widely separated from very small hooks in 2 very close circles posteriorly (hook length ratio about 4:1). It is separated from 4 other species of Acanthosentis with similar proboscis . armature but with less-extreme diversification of hook length. The new species is also distinguished in having anterior para-receptacle structures (PRS) and a similar posterior structure like those reported in only 1 other species of Acanthosentis from Japan. Proboscis receptacle is single walled with a large triangular cephalic ganglion. Testes are large, pre-equatorial. and Saefftigen's pouch is prominent. Fourteen to 25 circles of spines cover the anterior 50-70% of the trunk, but a few spines may be present at posterior end of trunk. This is the first species of Acanthosentis where SEM images, showing external morphological details, are provided. From a total of 357 fish specimens examined between July 2006 and June 2007, 173 specimens (48.5%) were infected with individuals of the new species. The prevalence of infection decreased with increasing fish size. The parasite was observed all year, with the highest abundance and intensity in May while the prevalence was highest in February. The prevalence of acanthocephalans decreased with increasing fish size. While most worms were recovered in fish within the length range of 18-29.9 mm, 1 of the longest parasites (1.68 mm long) was found in fish within the range of 30-33.9 mm long. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We provide the first description of behavior in the Catarina pupfish (Megupsilon aporus). Aggressive, courtship, and spawning behaviors resemble those of other North American cyprinodontids. However, M. aporus differs from others in the group in absence of breeding territoriality in males. Male M. aporus often perform opercular rotation during aggressive displays and jaw-nudging during courtship, behaviors that, among other North American cyprinodontids, are absent or known only in Floridichthys. Some unusual features of behavior (lack of territoriality) and morphology (dwarfism; absence of pelvic fins) in M. aporus might have been shaped by interaction with a cohabitant, the Potosi pupfish Cyprinodon alvarezi. Condition-specific competition is widespread in nature. Species inhabiting heterogeneous environments tend to differ in competitive abilities depending on environmental stressors. Interactions between these factors can allow coexistence of competing species, which may be particularly important between invasive and native species. Here, we examine the effects of temperature on competitive interactions between invasive mosquitofish, Gambusia holbrooki, and an endemic Iberian toothcarp, Aphanius iberus. We compare the tendency to approach heterospecifics and food capture rates between these two species, and examine differences between sexes and species in aggressive interactions, at three different temperatures (19, 24 and 29°C) in three laboratory experiments. Mosquitofish exhibit much more aggression than toothcarp. We show that mosquitofish have the capacity to competitively displace toothcarp through interference competition and this outcome is more likely at higher temperatures. We also show a reversal in the competitive hierarchy through reduced food capture rate by mosquitofish at lower temperatures and suggest that these two types of competition may act synergistically to deprive toothcarp of food at higher temperatures. Males of both species carry out more overtly aggressive acts than females, which is probably related to the marked sexual dimorphism and associated mating systems of these two species. Mosquitofish may thus impact heavily on toothcarp, and competition from mosquitofish, especially in warmer summer months, may lead to changes in abundance of the native species and displacement to non-preferred habitats. Globally increasing temperatures mean that highly invasive, warm-water mosquitofish may be able to colonize environments from which they are currently excluded through reduced physiological tolerance to low temperatures. The Arabian cyprinodontid Aphanius dispar (Rüppell, 1829) is known to show considerable morphological variation. It has remained unknown, however, whether this variation is a result of environmental differences or allopatric divergence owing to geographical isolation. In this study, 11 populations of A. dispar from three geographically separated basins were analysed, that is, the Makran Basin (I, one river system), the Hormuzgan Basin (II, five rivers and three hot springs) and the Helleh Basin (III, two hot springs) in southern Iran. Statistical analyses do not indicate significant differences between the fishes from river and hot spring habitats ( T-test, p < 0.05), which is also supported by the Canonical Discriminant Analysis (CDA). Nevertheless, morphometric and meristic characters of the fishes, as well as otolith morphology and morphometry, demonstrate that six phenotypic characters discriminate the A. dispar populations of the three basins, that is, (1) predorsal distance (Prdd.SL), (2) head length (HL.SL), (3) pelvic fin length (Lplf.SL), (4) number of pelvic fin rays, as well as relative length of both the (5) medial part and (6) rostrum of the otolith. In addition, these characters display a consistent pattern of variation, thus providing support for the assumption that the phenotypically different A. dispar populations are a result of geographical isolation and not related to environmental differences. It is likely that the geological history of the drainage systems caused isolation event(s) that may date back to the Pleistocene (1.8 million years before present). This study aimed to investigate the investigation about reproduction of Aphanius dispar dispar (Rüppell, 1829) in Dalaki River, Bushehr. Dalaki River near a Dashtestan city (latitude: 29° 28' and longitude: 51° 17'). A total number of 530 specimens of Aphanius dispar dispar (Rüppell, 1829) were considered, out of which 390 were female and 140 were male. The maximum length was 39 mm for female and 49 for male. Sex ratio of 390 female and 140 male was significant. Observations on the seasonal distribution of maturity stages and variations in seasonal fluctuations in the Gonadosomatic Index (GSI) showed that the spawning period begins in April to June.
