Concept of sustainable development implies an effective long-term development, both in developed and developing countries, and must be based on three pillars: environmental protection, economic development and social cohesion, both on the state and on a global level. This clear definition of sustainable development suggests a necessity of a combined action on environmental protection, economic development and the achievement of social cohesion. As a rule, by investing in environmental protection projects, power generation companies implement previously defined growth targets, development policies, and business strategies. Investment projects for the given coal type are considered as the capital ones, for they use great financial resources, significant resources and are long-lasting. The companies untertake investing in such projects to be affirmed in the new business environment, adapt to anticipated changes or to overcome the handicaps of their current position and thus adjust their production capabilities with the opportunities offered by the market. All the above implies that environmentally based capital project investments are the prerequisite of existence, sustainable growth and the acquisition of competitive advantages. However, investing in such projects is a very complex process comprised of multidimensional testing activities of all relevant determinants of future conditions and changes that the project entails. Bearing in mind that such projects are associated with the company's strategic development objectives, in the realization of such projects all the internal and external factors of development shall be taken into account, as well as a number of constraints arising from the socio-economic environment.

- Abstract
There is wide regional variation in clinical practice and access to treatment for patients with diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) from countries in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). A treatment algorithm that reflects current treatment practices while providing a common framework may facilitate best practice in DFU management and improve outcomes across the CEE region. Following a series of regional advisory board meetings with experts from Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Croatia, we present consensus recommendations for the management of DFU and outline the key features of a unified algorithm for dissemination and use as a quick tool in clinical practice in CEE. The algorithm should be accessible to specialists as well as non-specialist clinicians and should incorporate: patient screening; checkpoints for assessment and referral; triggers of treatment change; and strategies for infection control, wound bed preparation and offloading. Among adjunctive treatments in DFU, there is a clear role for topical oxygen therapy, which can be used concomitantly with most existing treatment regimens in hard-to-heal wounds following standard of care. Countries from CEE face a number of challenges in the management of DFU. It is hoped that such an algorithm will help standardise the approach to DFU management and overcome some of these challenges. Ultimately, a regionwide treatment algorithm in CEE has the potential to improve clinical outcomes and save limbs.

- Abstract
Among asymptomatic patients with severe carotid artery stenosis but no recent stroke or transient cerebral ischaemia, either carotid artery stenting (CAS) or carotid endarterectomy (CEA) can restore patency and reduce long-term stroke risks. However, from recent national registry data, each option causes about 1% procedural risk of disabling stroke or death. Comparison of their long-term protective effects requires large-scale randomised evidence.

- Abstract
Presented are the results of a project to test and evaluate the Conscious Synthesis of Development (CSD) method for treating stuttering which concentrates on both psychological and physiological aspects of the disorder. The report is organized into the following divisions: definition and psychophysiology of stuttering; historical overview; review of selected contemporary therapeutic methods; principles underlying the CSD method; the therapeutic phases of CSD treatment; reactions of patients, parents, and therapists to the CSD method; statistical analysis of data collected on patients; and effects of liberation of spontaneous reading and speaking. Highlights of each of the three CSD treatment phases include mastery of the speech mechanism known as specialization and organization of attention, learning to read aloud without stuttering, and learning to speak in all situations. - Abstract
Purpose: The aim of this project is to explore practice patterns of experienced vascular specialists involved in the treatment of patients with arterial femoro-popliteal in-stent occlusion (ISO) and to understand key concepts and shared thoughts, throughout an international cross-sectional survey.Materials and Methods: The web-based survey was in English and included 31 questions. One-hundred experts were invited by email to fill in the survey anonymously on Google Forms using a dedicated link. Reminders were sent after the first 2 weeks. In addition to reporting of pooled responses, subanalyses of answers were also performed, according to country of origin (European vs non-European), years of experience (≤20 years vs >20 years), and type of institution (Academic/University vs Non-academic/Private).Results: A total of 77 physicians from 22 countries completed the survey. Most responders were males (70/77, 91%). Most of the participants were vascular surgeons (58/77, 75%). Endovascular therapy was the preferred option in patients presenting with either acute limb ischemia, disabling intermittent claudication, or chronic limb-threatening ischemia. Atherectomy/thrombectomy+Drug-Coated Balloon (DCB) was the preferred endovascular modality (32/77, 42%). No differences between country of origin, years of experience, and type of institution of the participants were found. Conclusions: The international SUrvey oN TReatment Of Occluded Femoro-Popliteal Stent (SUNROOF) survey has suggested that endovascular therapy is the preferred method for the treatment of femoro-popliteal ISO. This survey could represent a good starting point for future research on comparison between open and endovascular approach and different devices, which currently lacks good-level scientific evidence and appropriate guidelines.Clinical Impact The international SUNROOF survey included 31 questions. It was performed by 77 vascular physicians from 22 countries. More than a half of respondents considered an endovascular approach as the preferred treatment modality in acute limb ischemia, disabling intermittent claudication, or chronic limb-threatening ischemia. Most responders agreed they would intensify the follow-up protocol and anti-thrombotic medications regimen after a first in-stent occlusion episode. This survey could represent a good starting point for future research on comparison between open and endovascular approach and different devices, which currently lacks of good level scientific evidence and appropriate guidelines.

The frequency of micronuclei (MN) was determined in haemocytes of native mussels, Mytilus galloprovincialis, collected at five sites along Eastern Adriatic coast in Croatia, four times throughout the year to evaluate seasonal variability in connection with possible genotoxic pollution. Chosen sites were either near closed industrial facilities, or in tourist resorts. Mussels from a mussel farm were used as control. Seasonal variations in MN frequency were not observed for the control mussels, but for other investigated sites clear seasonal variations were observed. The highest frequency of MN was observed in summer on all studied sites, elevated in comparison to the control, while the lowest frequency was detected in autumn except for one site. These results pointed out that seasonal changes are observed only at polluted sites, most probably caused by seasonality of pollution as well as by interaction between contaminants and higher metabolic and filtration rates in mussels resulting in higher values of cytogenetic damage.

Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are the dominating nanomaterial in consumer products due to their well-known antibacterial and antifungal properties. To enhance their properties, different surface coatings may be used, which affect physico-chemical properties of AgNPs. Due to their wide application, there has been concern about possible environmental and health consequences. Since plants play a significant role in accumulation and biodistribution of many environmentally released substances, they are also very likely to be influenced by AgNPs. In this study we investigated the toxicity of AgNO 3 and three types of laboratory-synthesized AgNPs with different surface coatings [citrate, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)] on Allium cepa roots. Ionic form of Ag was confirmed to be more toxic than any of the AgNPs applied. All tested AgNPs caused oxidative stress and exhibited toxicity only when applied in higher concentrations. The highest toxicity was recorded for AgNPs-CTAB, which resulted with increased Ag uptake in the roots, consequently leading to strong reduction of the root growth and oxidative damage. The weakest impact was found for AgNPs-citrate, much bigger, negatively charged NPs, which also aggregated to larger particles. Therefore, we can conclude that the toxicity of AgNPs is directly correlated with their size, overall surface charge and/or surface coating. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the advent of ionic liquids, much was expected concerning their applicability as an alternative to organic solvents in the chemical technology and biotechnology fields. However, the most studied and commonly used ionic liquids based on imidazolium and pyridinium were found not to be as environmentally friendly as it was first expected. Therefore, a new generation of alternative solvents named natural ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents, composed of natural and/or renewable compounds, have come into focus in recent years. Since the number of newly synthesized chemicals increases yearly, simple and reliable methods for their ecotoxicological assessment are necessary. Permanent fish cell lines can serve as a test system for the evaluation of a chemical's cytotoxicity. This paper presents research results on the cytotoxic effects on Channel Catfish Ovary (CCO) cell line induced by fifteen cholinium-based ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents. Based on the decrease in cell viability, the most obvious toxic effect on CCO cells was caused by ionic liquid choline oxalate, while other solvents tested exhibited low cytotoxicity. Therefore, we can conclude that cholinium-based ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents are comparatively less toxic to CCO cells than conventional ionic liquids. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Over the past three decades a growing awareness of environmental protection prompted the development of so-called green and sustainable technologies. Therefore, academic and wider community intensively explores new chemicals and safer, more energy efficient processes based on a rational compromise between economic, social, and environmental requirements. Due to low volatility and stability, ionic liquids emerged as a potential replacement for traditional volatile and harmful organic solvents. Various studies have been carried out to validate the green character of ionic liquids, whereby data published suggest that these compounds, due to their relatively high toxicity and poor biodegradability, could have an extremely negative impact on the environment. This paper presents the current knowledge on the toxicity of ionic liquids, with a special emphasis on the mechanisms by which this group of compounds causes changes in the morphology and physiology of organisms at different organisational levels of the ecosystem.

- Abstract
Risk management is an integrative part of all types of project management. One of the main tasks of pre-investment studies and other project documentation is the tendency to protect investment projects as much as possible against investment risks. Therefore, the provision and regulation of risk information ensure the identification of the probability of the emergence of adverse events, their forms, causes and consequences, and provides a timely measures of protection against risks. This means that risk management involves a set of management methods and techniques used to reduce the possibility of realizing the adverse events and consequences and thus increase the possibilities of achieving the planned results with minimal losses.

Within this work we evaluated the cytotoxicity towards the Channel Catfish Ovary (CCO) cell line of some imidazolium-based ionic liquids containing different functionalized and unsaturated side chains. The toxic effects were measured by the reduction of the WST-1 dye after 72 h exposure resulting in dose- and structure-dependent toxicities. The obtained data on cytotoxic effects of 14 different imidazolium ionic liquids in CCO cells, expressed as EC
50 values, were used in a preliminary quantitative structure–toxicity relationship (QSTR) study employing regression- and classification-based approaches. The toxicity of ILs towards CCO was chiefly related to the shape and hydrophobicity parameters of cations. A significant influence of the quantum topological molecular similarity descriptor ellipticity ( ε ) of the imine bond was also observed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have been dramatically expanding in popularity as a new generation of environmentally friendly solvents with possible applications in various industrial fields, but their ecological footprint has not yet been thoroughly investigated. In the present study, three choline chloride-based DESs with glucose, glycerol and oxalic acid as hydrogen bond donors were evaluated for in vitro toxicity using fish and human cell line, phytotoxicity using wheat and biodegradability using wastewater microorganisms through closed bottle test. Obtained in vitro toxicity data on cell lines indicate that choline chloride: glucose and choline chloride:glycerol possess low cytotoxicity (EC
50 >10 mM for both cell lines) while choline chloride:oxalic acid possess moderate cytotoxicity (EC50 value 1.64 mM and 4.19 mM for fish and human cell line, respectively). Results on phytotoxicity imply that tested DESs are non-toxic with seed germination EC50 values higher than 5000 mg l−1 . All tested DESs were classified as′readily biodegradable′ based on their high levels of mineralization (68–96%). These findings indicate that DESs have a green profile and a good prospect for a wider use in the field of green technologies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

We studied the effects of five imidiazolium based ionic liquids with different anions and length of alkyl chains linked to imidazolium ring on the early development of barley (Hordeum vulgare). The inhibitory effect depends on the ionic liquids concentration and chemical structure, whereby the most toxic one was [C
10 mim][Br], followed by [C7 mim][Br], [C4 mim][Br], [C4 mim][CH3 CO2 ] and [C4 mim][BF4 ]. Both anion and cation structures affected the toxicity of ionic liquid indicating that selection of more biocompatible anions such as [CH3 CO2 ] does not necessarily indicate lower toxicity. Alternation in the extent of oxidative stress and antioxidant enzymes activities were found in barley plants due to ionic liquid treatments. When seedlings were exposed to higher concentrations of ionic liquids, antioxidant system could not effectively remove reactive oxidative species, leading to lipid peroxidation and damage of the photosynthetic system. However, overall data indicated that the performance of barley seedling was improved when all measured enzymes involved in scavenging of reactive oxygen species (ROS) were increased with special emphasis on GPX activities. Since there are no studies about ionic liquid (IL) toxicity in plants, that simultaneously evaluates the antioxidative enzyme system in response to different ILs, this work is valuable for gaining knowledge about the protection mechanism of plants from oxidative stress caused by IL exposure. HAZARDS ,ECOLOGICAL risk assessment ,IONIC liquids ,SUSTAINABLE chemistry ,LIFE cycle costing - Abstract
Over past decades ionic liquids, a promising alternative to traditional organic solvents, have been dramatically expanding in popularity as a new generation of chemicals with potential uses in various areas in industry. In the literature these compounds have often been referred to as environmentally friendly; however, in recent years the perception of their greenness dramatically changed as the scientific community began to proactively assess the risk of their application based on the entire life-cycle. This review gives a brief overview of the current knowledge regarding the potential risks linked to the application of ionic liquids – from preparation to their disposal, with special emphasis on their potential environmental impacts and future directions in designing inherently safer ionic liquids. WATER quality monitoring ,FERTILIZER factories ,WATER pollution ,WATER quality ,PLANT-water relationships ,POLYCYCLIC aromatic hydrocarbons - Abstract
Abstract: The genotoxic and toxic potential of polluted surface water exposed to a fertilizer factory effluent was evaluated using assays with fish (Cyprinus carpio) and plant (Lemna minor) model organisms. Beside classical physicochemical parameters, the contents of fluorides, some heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were analyzed as well. Surface water caused inhibition of plant growth and decrease of photosynthetic pigment content. Regarding DNA damage and oxidative stress parameters, both fish and plants showed similar response to the surface water. In confirmation to biochemical markers, histopathological analysis of gill and liver tissues revealed a higher incidence of lesions in fish exposed to polluted surface water. Generally, results obtained by biological monitoring were mostly in agreement with chemical analysis of the surface water, although several discrepancies were observed which might be due to difference in sensitivity of model organisms or in experimental conditions (laboratory and field exposure). The results imply that conventional chemical analysis should be extended to genotoxicity/toxicity assays as measured biological effects and the potential health hazard cannot be predicted based on the physicochemical characteristics of water samples alone. Abstract: Increasing interest in the application of ionic liquids as green replacement for volatile organic solvents emphasized the need for the evaluation of their toxic effects at different biological systems in order to reduce the risk for human health and environment. To our knowledge, effects of imidazolium ionic liquids on cellular level of fish cell lines have not been studied yet. The cytotoxicity of imidazolium ionic liquids containing different anions and alkyl chain lengths as the substituent at the cation ring towards the fish CCO cell line was determined by WST-1 proliferation assay. Morphological alterations were examined by fluorescent microscopy using acridine orange/ethidium bromide staining and flow cytometry analysis was also performed. The results showed concentration-dependent cytotoxicity of ionic liquids in CCO cells, related to the type of anion and alkyl chain length, while EC
50 values showed moderate to high cytotoxicity of tested imidazolium ionic liquids. Distinct morphological changes observed under fluorescence microscope and data obtained by flow cytometry suggest that the toxicity of imidazolium ionic liquids with longer alkyl chains could be related to necrosis. Results presented in here may be helpful for filling existing gaps of knowledge about ionic liquids toxicity and their impact on aquatic environment. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]- Published

- Abstract
AbstractSynthesis of ionic liquid 1-heptyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium bromide was accomplished with the assistance of ultrasound, microwave irradiation, and a continuously operated microreactor and was compared with a conventional laboratory scale process applying magnetic stirring and water-bath heating. Results were compared with respect to process productivity, energy consumption, and product colourisation as an indicator of its purity. By using nonconventional technologies, volumetric productivity was 10- to 30-fold superior, while energy consumption was reduced by 45%–65%. Among the alternatives tested, ultrasound-assisted synthesis was shown as the most efficient one in terms of volumetric productivity (4.40 mol l-1h-1) and specific power consumption (909.1 W h mol-1), while microwave-assisted process was the least favourable. However, only a microreactor system enabled the synthesis of a noncoloured product resulting from very efficient mixing and temperature control. Due to significant process intensification along with high product quality and superior industrial perspectives, a continuous quaternisation within microchannels could be selected as the most promising greenapproach among the alternatives tested in this study. Integration of ultrasound and microreactor technology including miniaturised heat exchanger is foreseen for process intensification.

- Abstract
Cytotoxic Effects of Imidazolium Ionic Liquids on Fish and Human Cell LinesIonic liquids bring a promise of a wide range of "green" applications that could replace conventional volatile solvents. However, before these applications become large-scale, their toxicity needs to be investigated in order to predict the impact on human health and environment. In this study we assessed the cytotoxicity of imidazolium ionic liquids (in the concentrations between 0.1 mmol L-1and 10 mmol L-1) in the ovarian fish cell line CCO and the human tumour cell line HeLa using the MTT cell viability assay. Our results showed that the most cytotoxic ionic liquid was 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoro methylsulphonyl)imide, [BMIM][Tf2N], followed by 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [BMIM][BF4], 1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate [BMIM][PF6], and 1,3-dimethylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate [MMIM][PF6]. Generally, the effects were concentration-dependent. They also depended on the type of anion and the n-alkyl chain length. The comparison between the fish CCO and human HeLa cell lines suggests that CCO cells provide a good biological system for initial toxicity testing of ionic liquids that could replace in vivobioassays.
