Abstract

L X-ray production cross sections for proton and 4He ion bombardment of thin targets of Ba, La and Ce have been measured in the energy range 0.25–1.80 MeV for protons and 0.40–1.80 MeV for helium ions. L-subshell ionization cross sections have been extracted and compared with the predictions of the perturbed stationary state theory including energy loss, Coulomb retardation and relativistic effects (ECPSSR). Particular attention has been devoted to the low incident energy region. The possible presence of second order effects (trajectory, vacancy rearrangement) in this region is discussed.

Abstract

L-subshell ionisation cross sections for 4 He ion bombardment of Te in the energy range 0.6−5.0 MeV, obtained by means of X-ray production measurements, have been compared with the predictions of different theories (binary encounter approximation, plane-wave Born approximation, semiclassical approximation). The effects of various corrections taking into account binding modifications, polarisation and relativistic motion of the atomic electrons and Coulomb retardation and energy loss of the projectile have been considered. The binding modification turns out to be the most relevant correction, but it is still inadequate to describe the low energy part of the cross sections.

Abstract

The14N(d, α)12C reaction has been studied in order to investigate the possible production of quartet states involving excitations of quartets from the (0p) to the (1s, 0d) and (0f, 1p) shells. The compound nucleus16O is excited in the energy regionE x =(21÷25) MeV, where the quartet configurations |111| and |102| are predicted. The14N(d, α) and14N(d, p) excitation functions were measured, for transitions up to the eighth excited state in12C and to the tenth excited state in15N, in the energy rangeEd=(0.5÷5.0) MeV, partially at laboratory angles θlab = 60°, 90° and partially at θlab = 120°, 150°. Moreover, angular distributions were measured nearEd=2.7 MeV in order to recognize the |030| quartet configuration, predicted atE x =23.1 MeV, which does not involve the same kind of excitations. ΔE, E telescopes and a time-of-flight device were used. A resonance occurs atEd=3.24 MeV (E x (16O)=23.54 MeV) which may arise from a di-deuteron structure withJπ=2+. No evidence for resonances due to quartet excitations has been found.
