Abstract

Storfjorden, Svalbard, hosts a polynya in winter and is an important source region of Brine-enriched Shelf Water (BSW) that, if dense enough, feeds the Arctic Ocean deep water reservoir. Changes in the BSW production may thus have far-reaching impacts. We analyze the water mass distribution and circulation in Storfjorden and the trough south of it, Storfjordrenna, using hydrographic sections occupied in July 2016, following a winter characterized by the lowest ice coverage recorded in the Barents Sea. These observations reveal an unusual hydrographic state, characterized at the surface by the near absence of Melt Water and Storfjorden Surface Water, replaced by a saltier water mass. At depth, BSW (maximum salinity of 34.95) was found from the bottom up to 90 m, above the 120-m deep sill at the mouth to Storfjordrenna. However, no gravity driven overflow was observed downstream of the sill: the dome of BSW remained locked over the depression in a cyclonic circulation pattern consistent with a stratified Taylor column. Observations further reveal a previously unreported intrusion of Atlantic Water far into the fjord, promoting isopycnal mixing with entrapped Arctic Water. This intrusion was possibly favored by positive wind stress curl anomalies over Svalbardbanken and Storfjordrenna. The bottom plume exiting Storfjordrenna was weak, carrying Polar Front Water rather than BSW, too light to sink underneath the Atlantic Water layer at Fram Strait. Whether Storfjorden switched durably to a new hydrographic state, following the observed Atlantification of the Barents Sea after 2005, remains to be established. Abstract

Iron is an essential nutrient that regulates productivity in ~30% of the ocean. Compared with deep (>2000 meter) hydrothermal activity at mid-ocean ridges that provide iron to the ocean’s interior, shallow (<500 meter) hydrothermal fluids are likely to influence the surface’s ecosystem. However, their effect is unknown. In this work, we show that fluids emitted along the Tonga volcanic arc (South Pacific) have a substantial impact on iron concentrations in the photic layer through vertical diffusion. This enrichment stimulates biological activity, resulting in an extensive patch of chlorophyll (360,000 square kilometers). Diazotroph activity is two to eight times higher and carbon export fluxes are two to three times higher in iron-enriched waters than in adjacent unfertilized waters. Such findings reveal a previously undescribed mechanism of natural iron fertilization in the ocean that fuels regional hotspot sinks for atmospheric CO2.

Abstract

Abstract. The science guiding the EUREC4A campaign and its measurements is presented. EUREC4A comprised roughly 5 weeks of measurements in the downstream winter trades of the North Atlantic – eastward and southeastward of Barbados. Through its ability to characterize processes operating across a wide range of scales, EUREC4A marked a turning point in our ability to observationally study factors influencing clouds in the trades, how they will respond to warming, and their link to other components of the earth system, such as upper-ocean processes or the life cycle of particulate matter. This characterization was made possible by thousands (2500) of sondes distributed to measure circulations on meso- (200 km) and larger (500 km) scales, roughly 400 h of flight time by four heavily instrumented research aircraft; four global-class research vessels; an advanced ground-based cloud observatory; scores of autonomous observing platforms operating in the upper ocean (nearly 10 000 profiles), lower atmosphere (continuous profiling), and along the air–sea interface; a network of water stable isotopologue measurements; targeted tasking of satellite remote sensing; and modeling with a new generation of weather and climate models. Abstract

The signature of internal solitary waves (ISWs) is rarely captured by satellite imagery around the Halmahera Sea, as well as has never been characterized via direct observations. This study characterizes an observed ISWs train from echosounder of the Research Vessel Baruna Jaya VIII. The ISWs train consisted of two solitons of ∼50 m and ∼35 m amplitude. The waves are characterized using Korteweg-de Vries (K-dV) framework. The waves generate strong horizontal current bulb of ∼0.8 m s−1 in the upper layer and vertical velocities reaching 0.1 m s−1. The shape of two consecutive waves is consistent with the K-dV model and suggests a typical phase speed of ∼2.3 m s−1. The total energy density of the two ISWs reached ∼1.59 GJ m−1. Abstract

International audience; Recent observations from profiles of temperature and salinity in the Algerian Sea showed that salt finger mixing can significantly warm and salinify the deep waters within a period of 2 years, thereby contributing to the erosion of deep water properties formed during winter convection episodes. In this study, heat, salt, and buoyancy fluxes associated with thermohaline staircases are estimated using microstructure observations from four locations of the Western Mediterranean Sea: The Tyrrhenian Sea, the Algerian Sea, the Sardino-Balearic Sea, and the Ligurian Sea. Those fluxes are compared to the rare estimates found in the Mediterranean Sea. Microstructure data show that the temperature variance dissipation rate is one to three orders of magnitude larger in the strong steps that separate weakly stratified layers than in the layers, while the turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate remains usually weak both in steps and layers. In the steps, the turbulent eddy diffusivity of salt is on average twice as large as that of temperature. The buoyancy flux ratio decreases with the density ratio. It is found that staircases induce a downward heat transfer rate of 46 to 103 × 109 W over the whole western basin, and a downward salt transfer rate of 4.5 to 10.3 × 103 kg s–1 between 1000 and 2000 m. This heat convergence is 2–5 times as large as the western Mediterranean geothermal heat flux in this depth range. Over the whole western basin, heat and salt convergences from salt-fingering staircases are 50% to 100% of those generated by mechanical mixing. Finally, it is found that heat and salt convergences from geothermal heating, salt-fingering and mechanical mixing can balance a deep water upwelling of 0.4 × 106 m3 s–1.

We we cannot agree with their conclusions for several reasons: the lack of compelling results from the Fourier spectra and SSA estimates which are provided without confidence intervals, the small radiative forcing associated with the sunspot variability and finally the simple evidence that the slowly varying components of the temperature and sunspots time show opposite trends in the last 30 years.

Abstract

International audience; We thank the authors (hereafter referred to as CCC) for providing us an opportunity to clarify some points of our original paper. CCC list in their abstract three "key points"that we respond to in this Reply. The first comment is the central one and the most developed. It deals mainly with discussion of features of methods of spectral analysis, mainly SSA. We have quoted the sub parts of that comment as items 1a to 1k. The replies to comments/key points 2 and 3 are shorter. We disagree with most of the comments by CCC and explain why. We conclude that we have successfully countered CCC's criticism and shown many of their points to be unsubstantiated. The main problem seems to reside in differences concerning the literature on Singular Spectral Analysis and our use of it. Much of our response to the comments can be found in textbooks and review papers on SSA and time series analysis; we quote extensively, both in our original paper and in this response to CCC, Golyandina and Zhigljavsky (2013).

Abstract

The science guiding the \EURECA campaign and its measurements are presented. \EURECA comprised roughly five weeks of measurements in the downstream winter trades of the North Atlantic — eastward and south-eastward of Barbados. Through its ability to characterize processes operating across a wide range of scales, \EURECA marked a turning point in our ability to observationally study factors influencing clouds in the trades, how they will respond to warming, and their link to other components of the earth system, such as upper-ocean processes or, or the life-cycle of particulate matter. This characterization was made possible by thousands (2500) of sondes distributed to measure circulations on meso (200 km) and larger (500 km) scales, roughly four hundred hours of flight time by four heavily instrumented research aircraft, four global-ocean class research vessels, an advanced ground-based cloud observatory, a flotilla of autonomous or tethered measurement devices operating in the upper ocean (nearly 10000 profiles), lower atmosphere (continuous profiling), and along the air-sea interface, a network of water stable isotopologue measurements, complemented by special programmes of satellite remote sensing and modeling with a new generation of weather/climate models. In addition to providing an outline of the novel measurements and their composition into a unified and coordinated campaign, the six distinct scientific facets that \EURECA explored — from Brazil Ring Current Eddies to turbulence induced clustering of cloud droplets and its influence on warm-rain formation — are presented along with an overview \EURECA’s outreach activities, environmental impact, and guidelines for scientific practice.

28. Near-Inertial Energy Propagation inside a Mediterranean Anticyclonic Eddy

Abstract

Motivated by observations of a strong near-inertial wave signal at the base of the semi-permanent anticyclonic Cyprus eddy during the 2010 BOUM experiment, a numerical study is performed to investigate the role of near-inertial/eddy interactions in energy transfer out of the mixed layer. A hybrid temporal-spatial decomposition is used to split all variables into three independent components: slow (eddy) and fast (inertial oscillations + waves), which proves useful in understanding the flow dynamics. Through a detailed energy budget analysis, we find that the anticyclonic eddy acts as a catalyst in transferring wind-driven inertial energy to propagating waves. While the eddy sets the spatial scales of the waves, it does not participate in any energy exchange. Near-inertial propagation through the eddy core results in the formation of multiple critical levels with the largest accumulation of wave energy at the base of the eddy. A complementary ray-tracing analysis reveals critical level formation when the surface-confined inertial rays originate within the negative vorticity region. In contrast, rays originating outside of this region focus at the base of the eddy and can propagate at depth.

Abstract

Microstructure measurements were performed along the OUTPACE longitudinal transect in the tropical Pacific (Moutin and Bonnet, 2015). Small-scale dynamics and three-dimensional turbulence in the first 800m surface layer were characterized based on hydrographic and current measurements at fine scale and turbulence measurements at cm scale using a vertical microstructure profiler. The possible impact of turbulence on biogeochemical budgets in the surface layer was also addressed in this region of increasing oligotrophy to the East. The dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy, ε, showed an interesting contrast along the longitudinal transect with higher turbulence level in the West, i.e. the Melanesian Archipelago, compared to the East, within the South Pacific Subtropical Gyre. The surface layer with enhanced turbulence decreased in vertical extent traveling eastward. This spatial pattern was correlated to the energy level of the internal wave field, higher in the West compared to the East. The difference in wave energy mostly resulted from enhanced wind power input into inertial motions in the West. Moreover, three long duration stations were sampled along the cruise transect, each over three inertial periods. The analysis from the western long duration station gave evidence of an energetic baroclinic near-inertial wave that was responsible for the enhanced ε. This was in strong contrast with the observations at the two eastern long duration stations where semi-diurnal internal tides dominate. Averaged nitrate turbulent diffusive fluxes were at least twice as large at the western station than at the two eastern stations due to the higher vertical diffusion coefficient. In the surface layer, above the nitracline, phosphate turbulent diffusive fluxes were significant except at the very eastern part of the transect. Abstract

The dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy ε and the associated diapycnal turbulent mixing is inferred from a set of microstructure observations collected over several cruises from year 2012 to 2014. The geographical distribution of ε highlights several regions of enhanced levels of turbulence ranging from 10−9 to 10−6 W kg−1: the Sicily Channel, the Corsica Channel, and the Ligurian Sea. Elsewhere, ε was small, often below 10−10 W kg−1. Below 1300 m, geothermal heating provides three-fold more buoyancy than small-scale turbulence. Geothermal heating and turbulent diffusion provide enough buoyancy to balance 15% to 50% of a mean yearly deep water formation rate of 0.9 to 0.3 sverdrup (106 m3/s), respectively. The remaining part has to eventually overflow through the Strait of Gibraltar.

This spatial pattern was correlated with the energy level of the internal wave field, higher in the west compared to the east. The difference in wave energy mostly resulted from enhanced wind power input into inertial motions in the west. Moreover, three long-duration stations were sampled along the cruise transect, each over three inertial periods. The analysis from the western long-duration station gave evidence of an energetic baroclinic near-inertial wave that was responsible for the enhanced ϵ , observed within a 50–250 m layer, with a value of 8×10-9 W kg -1 , about 8 times larger than at the eastern long-duration stations. Averaged nitrate turbulent diffusive fluxes in a 100 m layer below the top of the nitracline were about twice larger west of 170 ∘ W due to the higher vertical diffusion coefficient. In the photic layer, the depth-averaged nitrate turbulent diffusive flux strongly decreased eastward, with an averaged value of 11 µmolm-2d-1 west of 170 ∘ W compared with the 3 µmolm-2d-1 averaged value east of 170 ∘ W. Contrastingly, phosphate turbulent diffusive fluxes were significantly larger in the photic layer. This input may have an important role in sustaining the development of N2 -fixing organisms that were shown to be the main primary contributors to the biological pump in the area. Abstract

International audience; Storfjorden, which hosts a latent heat polynya, is a well known region of dense water formation. This Brine-enriched Shelf Water (BSW) displays substantial year to year variability in its properties, which is partly linked to interannual variations in ice production. Here we have developed a model based on high-resolution AMSR-E satellite sea-ice concentration data, available between 2002 and 2011, and atmospheric forcing to estimate the ice production in the polynya and associated salt release. The average modeled ice production for the epoch 2002-2011 is 47 km3 per year, corresponding to a salt release of 1200 × 109 kg. The two most anomalous winters were 2004-2005 (salt deficit of -367 × 109 kg) and 2007-2008 (salt excess of 398 × 109 kg). Available observations of BSW properties are relatively scarce during this period and are here augmented with data collected in March 2007 from an ice-tethered mooring to the northwest of the fjord. BSW was found up to the surface, with maximum salinity and density of 35.27 and 28.4 kg m-3, respectively, at 55 m. In addition, supercooled water was found down to 10 m under relatively mild atmospheric conditions. It is shown to have formed a week before, during an intense frazil ice formation episode, exceeding 2 km3 of frazil ice according to the model. Although observations remain too few to robustly assess the relation between ice production and BSW properties, there is suggestion of a direct impact for most anomalous years. The exceptional ice production in 2007-2008 is most likely the cause of the very saline BSW in 2008 and strong plume of dense water toward Fram Strait reported by other authors. Anomalous ice production appears predominantly driven by the duration of the freezing season and anomalous opening of the polynya.

Abstract

National audience; Durant la campagne MOUTON des mesures hydrologiques et du courant à fine échelle ont été réalisées conjointement à des mesures de microstructure au centre du golfe de Gascogne afin de caractériser la dynamique des ondes internes de marée et le mélange associé. Ces mesures ont été réalisées à un soixantaine de km du point de résurgence du rayon de marée interne ou études théoriques et numériques prédisent une conversion du rayon de marée en ondes interfaciales de mode relativement élevé (mode 3) ainsi qu'une évolution non linéaire et non hydrostatique de ce mode en ondes solitaires. Des ondes de marée interne de grande amplitude qui se projettent principalement sur les modes 3 et 4 sont mises en évidence par nos observations, celles-ci génèrent des ondes solitaires de mode 1 piégées dans la thermocline. Ces ondes sont à l'origine d'une fine bande de cisaillement dans la thermocline qui est associé à un taux de dissipation important. Ce taux de dissipation est encore amplifié par le passage des ondes solitaires.

International audience; Owing to the predicted and already observed dramatic impact of climate warming in the Arctic, there is a great need for monitoring this region not only to assess the magnitude of changes but also to understand the physical processes governing heat, salt and dynamical exchanges between ocean, ice and atmosphere, with improvement of climate models predictability as a challenging perspective. OPTIMISM (Observing dynamical and thermodynamical Processes impacting The sea-Ice Mass balance from In Situ Measurements) is a 4-year ANR/IPEV-funded project (2009-2013) involving 5 French laboratories . A backbone aspect of this project is the development of an autonomous instrument ("Ice-T" buoy + "BEAR" meteo mast), providing a comprehensive observation of the relevant parameters driving the sea ice mass balance. Abstract

Near-inertial Internal Waves (NIW) excited by storms and cyclones play an essential role in driving turbulent mixing in the thermocline and interior ocean. Storm-induced mixing may be climatically relevant in regions like the thermocline ridge in the southwestern Indian Ocean, where a shallow thermocline and strong high frequency wind activity enhance the impact of internal gravity waveinduced mixing on sea surface temperature. The Cirene research cruise in early 2007 collected shipborne and mooring vertical profiles in this region under the effect of a developing tropical cyclone. In this paper, we characterize the NIW field and the impact of these waves on turbulent mixing in the upper ocean. NIW packets were identified down to 1000 m, the maximum depth of the measurements. We estimated a NIW vertical energy flux of up to 2.5 mW m-2 within the pycnocline, which represents about 10% of the maximum local wind power input. A nonnegligible fraction of the wind power input is hence potentially available for subsurface mixing. The impact of mixing by internal waves on the upper ocean heat budget was estimated from a fine-scale mixing parameterization. During the first leg of the cruise (characterized by little NIW activity), the average heating rate due to mixing was ~0.06°C month-1 in the thermocline (23-24 kg m-3 isopycnals). During the second leg, characterized by strong NIW energy in the thermocline and below, this heating rate increased to 0.42°C month-1, indicative of increased shear instability along near inertial wave energy pathways.

Abstract

Microstructure measurements were performed along the OUTPACE longitudinal transect in the tropical Pacific (Moutin and Bonnet, 2015). Small-scale dynamics and three-dimensional turbulence in the first 800 m surface layer were characterized based on hydrographic and current measurements at fine scale and turbulence measurements at cm scale using a vertical microstructure profiler. The possible impact of turbulence on biogeochemical budgets in the surface layer was also addressed in this region of increasing oligotrophy to the East. The dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy, ε, showed an interesting contrast along the longitudinal transect with higher turbulence level in the West, i.e. the Melanesian Archipelago, compared to the East, within the South Pacific Subtropical Gyre. The surface layer with enhanced turbulence decreased in vertical extent traveling eastward. This spatial pattern was correlated to the energy level of the internal wave field, higher in the West compared to the East. The difference in wave energy mostly resulted from enhanced wind power input into inertial motions in the West. Moreover, three long duration stations were sampled along the cruise transect, each over three inertial periods. The analysis from the western long duration station gave evidence of an energetic baroclinic near-inertial wave that was responsible for the enhanced ε. This was in strong contrast with the observations at the two eastern long duration stations where semi-diurnal internal tides dominate. Averaged nitrate turbulent diffusive fluxes were at least twice as large at the western station than at the two eastern stations due to the higher vertical diffusion coefficient. In the surface layer, above the nitracline, phosphate turbulent diffusive fluxes were significant except at the very eastern part of the transect. This input may have an important role in sustaining the development of N2-fixing organisms that were evidenced as the main primary contributors to the biological pump in the area. The time-space intermittency of mixing events, intrinsic to turbulence, was underlined but its consequences on micro-organisms would deserve a dedicated study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; Lake Pavin presents the particular feature to be meromictic: the bottom compartment of the lake exhibits a very low mixing rate with the rest of the water body. Using temperature and conductivity microstructure measurements from years 2006 and 2007, vertical dispersion coefficients (Kz) are calculated in the water column of Lake Pavin (Auvergne, France). Microstructure measurements confirm the overall shape of Kz distribution in the water column in comparison with Kz calculated from mean stratification state for the purpose of previous modelling works. Nevertheless, this study highlights the strong variability of "measured" vertical dispersion coefficient (Kz) in Lake Pavin. In fact, dissipation rates are highly intermittent in time and space and calculation of vertical dispersion coefficient can vary from 1 to 2 orders of magnitude depending on the calculation method. This study compares Kz and dissipation values from different calculation methods. At last, this study addresses the question of the impact of this variability on large-scale 1D water quality modelling by testing intermittency scenarios of Kz with biochemical water quality model AQUASIM. The importance of intermittency in the transport of solutes is highlighted.

Abstract

International audience; Coastal Arctic polynyas play an important role in forming dense water and contribute to the deep ocean ventilation. Dense water formation results from brine rejection associated with sea-ice production. In March 2007, a 60m-long ice tethered mooring, recording temperature and salinity at high frequency with a relatively fine vertical resolution and a prototype float (Ice-T) measuring ice-thickness and thermal profiles in sea ice were deployed in Storfjorden in the Svalbard archipelago. This fjord hosts a latent heat polynya which is maintained open under northeasterly wind conditions. The water masses analysis reveals that the main pool of the fjord is occupied by Brine-enriched Shelf Water (BSW) over the whole water column, while the southwest part of the fjord is occupied by Arctic Water (ArW). The BSW recorded at the bottom of the mooring has a salinity of 35.2 (density of 28.31 kg m-3), which is among the densest values of BSW reported in this region in the literature. Measurements indicate that the water column is slightly supercooled down to 30m for the first day of the record until a warm storm breaks the ice. Maximum supercooling values are 0.007±0.002°C below the in-situ freezing point with a mean value of 0.005±0.002°C at 10m. The origin of this supercooled water is investigated by analyzing the ice cover and the ocean-atmosphere heat flux during the days that preceded these observations. Although the amount of supercooling is relatively low compared with values recently reported in Storfjorden, these observations show that supercooled water can still be present under the ice several days after the cooling and freezing period. A sudden and brief salinity anomaly reaching 0.2 ppt is observed at the base of the ice. Concomitant temperature anomalies are recorded in the sea ice. The origin of this signal, which occurs during a warm storm, is analyzed. As this salinity anomaly cannot be associated with ice formation, different sea ice desalination processes are investigated, in particular flushing by meltwater and gravity drainage.

Abstract

Internai waves climate during stratification period is characterized. Special focus is given to non linear processes, occurring during the summer 2004 and leading to internai surges and solitary waves, as such non Iinear waves can lead to important turbulent mixing when shoaling on the lake slopes. First measurements of turbulent dispersion realized using a microprofiler device are also presented and related to the internai wave dynamics., L'évolution du climat des ondes internes dans le lac du Bourget pendant la période de stratification a été caractérisée. Une attention particuliére a été portée sur les processus non linéaires survenant pendant l'été 2004 et aboutissant à la génération de fronts internes et d'ondes solitaires susceptibles de produire un mélange important par déferlement sur les rives. Les premiéres mesures de dispersion turbulente réalisées dans le lac du Bourget à partir d'un microprofileur sont également présentées et mises en corrélation avec la dynamique des ondes internes
