International audience; In the first part of this paper, we shall discuss the historical context of Science of Science both in China and at world level. In the second part, we use the unsupervised combination of GNG clustering with feature maximization metrics and associated contrast graphs to present an analysis of the contents of selected academic journal papers in Science of Science in China and the construction of an overall map of the research topics’ structure during the last 40 years. Furthermore, we highlight how the topics have evolved through analysis of publication dates and also use author information to clarify the topics’ content. The results obtained have been reviewed and approved by 3 leading experts in this field and interestingly show that Chinese Science of Science has gradually become mature in the last 40 years, evolving from the general nature of the discipline itself to related disciplines and their potential interactions, from qualitative analysis to quantitative and visual analysis, and from general research on the social function of science to its more specific economic function and strategic function studies. Consequently, the proposed novel method can be used without supervision, parameters and help from any external knowledge to obtain very clear and precise insights about the development of a scientific domain. The output of the topic extraction part of the method (clustering + feature maximization) is finally compared with the output of the well-known LDA approach by experts in the domain which serves to highlight the very clear superiority of the proposed approach.

Consequently, the proposed novel method permits without supervision, without parameters and without help of any external knowledge to have very clear andvery precise insights of the development of a scientific domain.; Dans une première partie de cet article, nous mettons en lumière le contexte historique de la Science de la Science en Chine et à l’échelle mondiale. Dans une deuxième partie, en utilisant la combinaison d’un clustering GNG (gaz de neurones), des mesures de maximisation des traits et des graphes de contraste, nous effectuons une analyse du contenu d’articles de revues académiques sélectionnées dans le domaine de la Science de la Science en Chine et construisons une carte globale de la recherche au cours des 40 dernières années. De plus, nous mettons en évidence l’évolution du domaine en exploitant les dates de publication et les informations auteurs afin de clarifier le contenu des sujets. Les résultats obtenus, validés par l’expertise, montrent clairement que la Science de la Science en Chine a progressivement mûri au cours des 40 dernières années, passant de la nature générale de la discipline aux disciplines connexes et à leurs interactions potentielles, de l’analyse qualitative à l’analyse quantitative et visuelle, et de la recherche générale sur la fonction sociale de la science aux études plus spécifiques sur sa fonction économique et stratégique. La méthode originale proposée permet d’obtenir sans supervision, sans paramètres et sans connaissances externes une vision à la fois très claire et très précise du développement d’un domaine scientifique.

In this paper we present an automatic approach to disambiguate and align geographic entities. A method based on word embeddings allows, from unsupervised learning, to remove ambiguity with polysemic terms. This allows automatic alignment with different databases (BNF, wikidata...) having a triplestore. We then use semantic web technologies, both to expose the data in a different way (data.istex) but also to allow complex queries that cannot be solved from traditional search engines. We will discuss a concrete case based on the ISTEX database, and a qualitative evaluation of the method will be proposed., Dans cet article nous présentons une approche automatique visant à désambiguïser et aligner des entités géographiques de type placeName. Une méthode basée sur des plongements lexicaux permet, à partir d'un apprentissage non supervisé de lever l'ambiguïté face à un terme polysémique. Cela permet alors un alignement automatique avec différents réservoirs (BNF, wikidata…) possédant un triplestore. Nous utilisons alors les technologies du web sémantique, pour à la fois exposer les données de façon différente (data.istex) mais également autoriser des requêtes complexes impossibles à résoudre à partir de moteurs de recherche classiques. Nous aborderons un cas concret basé sur le réservoir ISTEX, et une évaluation qualitative de la méthode sera proposée.

National audience; Dans cet article, nous proposons tout d’abord un état de l’art des méthodes pour la visualisation et l’interprétation des données textuelles, et en particulier des données scientifiques. Nous présentons nos contributions à ce domaine, sous la forme de méthodes originales pour la classification automatique de documents et l’interprétation facile de leur contenu grâce à des mots-clés caractéristiques et à des classes créées par nos algorithmes. Ensuite, nous focalisons notre analyse autour des données évolutives dans le temps. Nous détaillons notre approche par diachronie, particulièrement appropriée à la visualisation des évolutions. Cela nous permet de conclure en présentant Diachronic’Explorer, un outil de visualisation destiné à l’exploration visuelle des données évolutives.; In this paper, we introduce a survey about methods used to visualize and interpret textual data, in particular scientific data. We then detail our contribution to this field, describing original tools for document clustering and cluster labeling to help users understand clustering results. Afterwards, we focus on time-evolving data. We introduce and detail our diachronic approach, particularly well-fitted to visualize evolutions in the data. It allows to conclude by presenting Diachronic'Explorer, a visualization tool which aims to deal with evolving data.

Incremental on-line learning is a research topic gaining increasing interest in the machine learning community. Such learning methods are highly adaptive, not restricted to distinct training and application phases, and applicable to large volumes of data. In this paper, we present a novel classifier based on the unsupervised topology-learning TopoART neural network. We demonstrate that this classifier is capable of fast incremental on-line learning and achieves excellent results on standard datasets. We further show that it can successfully process imbalanced, incomplete, and noisy data. Due to these properties, we consider it a promising component for constructing artificial agents operating in real-world environments.

In this paper, an extension of the unsupervised topology-learning TopoART neural network is presented. Like TopoART, it is capable of stable incremental on-line clustering of real-valued data. However, it incorporates temporal information in such a way that consecutive input vectors with a low distance in the input space are summarised to episode-like clusters. Inspired by natural memory systems, we propose two recall methods enabling the selection and retrieval of these episodes. They are demonstrated at the example of a video stream recorded in a natural environment.

Data-stream clustering is an ever-expanding subdomain of knowledge extraction. Most of the past and present research effort aims at efficient scaling up for the huge data repositories. Our approach focuses on qualitative improvement, mainly for "weak signals" detection and precise tracking of topical evolutions in the framework of information watch - though scalability is intrinsically guaranteed in a possibly distributed implementation. Our GERMEN algorithm exhaustively picks up the whole set of density peaks of the data at time t, by identifying the local perturbations induced by the current document vector, such as changing cluster borders, or new/vanishing clusters. Optimality yields from the uniqueness 1) of the density landscape for any value of our zoom parameter, 2) of the cluster allocation operated by our border propagation rule. This results in a rigorous independence from the data presentation ranking or any initialization parameter. We present here as a first step the only assessment of a static view resulting from one year of the CNRS/INIST Pascal database in the field of geotechnics.

JURY : Eric Schmulevitch, Amos David, Claire François; L'évolution d'un domaine scientifique peut constituer une source d'information intéressante dans une démarche de veille scientifique et technologique notamment. Nous proposons dans cette étude un système de représentations des connaissances scientifiques graphique (faisant appel aux travaux sur la visualisation de l'information), dynamique (c'est-à-dire permettant de représenter l'évolution du domaine scientifique) et efficace ( c'est-à-dire prenant en compte les besoins des utilisateurs potentiels). Nous avons choisi comme fondement et comme domaine d'application, l'étude d'un algorithme de classification incrémental qui rend compte de l'évolution de classes de documents dans le temps à partir d'une base bibliographique (PASCAL) et d'un corpus issu de cette base. Ce travail est le fruit d'une collaboration entre l'équipe SITE-LORIA (http://site.loria.fr) et le SRDI-INIST (http://ingenierie.inist.fr/article40.html).
