The education of engineers and scientists are often inadequate in addressing the ethical aspects of their profession. Few curricula make ethics education a requirement, which results in a lack of knowledge reagrding basic ethical principles. Many universities and colleges have addressed this need after the furor caused by technology-based accidents. An effective ethics program requires its graduates to identify, analyze and act on ethical issues and take responsibility for their actions.

A hypothetical human resource problem involves a mutual lack of credibility between a business organization's marketing department and its research and development department. The marketing department, in its quest for advanced marketing activities, is pressuring the research department for the latest developments of an up-coming product. The department had to resort to recording and monitoring the communications of the research department. This, of course, has infuriated the research and development department.
