This randomized controlled trial aimed to determine the clinical efficacy of xenogeneic collagen membrane (XCM) derived from porcine peritoneum in combination with a coronally advanced flap (CAF) in the management of gingival recession defects and to compare the outcomes to those of connective tissue grafts (CTGs). A total of 12 systemically healthy individuals presenting with 30 isolated/multiple Cairo RT 1/2 gingival recession defects in maxillary canines and premolars were randomly treated either with CAF + XCM or CAF + CTG. Recession height (RH), gingival biotype (GB), gingival thickness (GT), width of keratinized gingiva (WKG), and width of attached gingiva (WAG) were recorded at baseline and at 3, 6, and 12 months. Patient perceptions of pain and esthetics and the modified root coverage esthetic score (MRES) were also documented. From baseline to 12 months, both groups showed a significant reduction in mean RH (CAF + CTG: 2.73 ± 0.79 mm to 0.33 ± 0.61 mm; CAF + XCM: 2.73 ± 0.88 mm to 1.20 ± 0.77 mm). At 12 months, CAF + CTG sites had a mean root coverage percentage (MRC%) of 85.60% ± 28.74%, whereas CAF + XCM sites had an MRC% of 55.13% ± 31.22%. CAF + CTG-treated sites had significantly better outcomes, with a greater number of sites achieving complete root coverage (n = 11) and higher MRES scores than the porcine peritoneal membrane group (P < .05). The alveolar bone crest level is essential in determining the need for bone removal in subjects with altered passive eruption (APE). This study assessed the validity of CBCT and transgingival probing in determining the alveolar bone crest level. Patients presenting with APE were assessed. Transgingival probing was performed to clinically assess the distance between the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) and the bone crest at the midpoint of the maxillary anterior teeth. CBCT was used to assess this distance at the same point. Upon reflection of a full mucoperiosteal flap, the actual distance was measured. Similar actual and CBCT measurements of the distance between the CEJ and bone crest at teeth 13, 22, and 23 (FDI numbering system) were recorded (P > .05). However, in teeth 11, 12, and 21, the distance was significantly greater on CBCT scans (P < .05). No significant difference was detected between transgingival probing and the actual distance at all teeth assessed. Careful transgingival probing provides an accurate measure of the distance between the CEJ and bone crest. Purpose: To compare bone substitutes composed of glycated collagen with synthetic micro-sized (1 to 10 µm) hydroxyapatite (OB) vs non-cross-linked collagen matrix with large-particle (250 to 1,000 µm) bovine-derived hydroxyapatite (BOC). Materials and Methods: The P1 to P4 premolars were bilaterally extracted from the mandibles of 19 Beagle dogs. After 21 days, osteotomies were created in each dog that received OB or BOC and were covered with a collagen membrane or were left untreated. The animals were randomly divided into three groups based on sacrifice time (4, 12, or 24 weeks). The right and left hemimandibles were trimmed to facilitate imaging and histology, and all tissues were placed in 10% neutral-buffered formalin. Microcomputed tomography (MicroCT 40 Scanner, Scanco) was used to analyze bone sections. Bone volume, residual material volume, and bone mineral density were determined for each treatment site (OB and BOC) based on a volume of interest that encompassed the original defect. Additionally, blinded histopathologic assessment (based on the ISO 10993-6 scoring system) and histomorphometry were performed on sections ground to < 100 µm thick and stained with Stevenel's blue. Results: No clinical side effects were noted. No statistical differences were observed for OB vs BOC regarding the mineral volume percentage. Compared to OB, BOC had significantly higher mean mineralization densities at 12 weeks (P < .01), but this difference did not extend to 24 weeks. For residual grafting material, bone maturation, alveolar ridge restoration, and inflammatory response, OB showed a residual amount of bone graft and no statistical differences compared to BOC. Conclusion: Both OB and BOC represent valid treatment options for critically sized bone defects. Objective: The present clinical report describes a long‐term temporary restorative approach using injectable composite to reshape a canine into a central incisor, within the context of an ongoing orthodontic treatment. This treatment protocol describes a fully‐digital workflow, incorporating digital designed and 3D printed diagnostic wax up, reduction guides and resin‐injection index. Clinical Considerations: Effective planning is important when aiming to deliver a comprehensive and multidisciplinary workflow, and digital tools serve as invaluable aids. Conclusion: The use of a fully digital workflow in a comprehensive dental treatment resulted in a predictable and successful outcome for a restoration of a canine that was transformed into a central incisor. Objective: The demand for esthetics has increased in today's world and most parents prefer to preserve their children's primary anterior teeth until their natural exfoliation. However, an intracanal post is required to provide retention for reconstruction of severely damaged anterior teeth due to caries or trauma. Various materials and methods may be used for the fabrication of intracanal posts. This study assessed the fracture strength and fracture mode of primary canine teeth reconstructed with prefabricated and customized polyethylene and glass fiber posts. Materials and Methods: This in vitro study evaluated 60 extracted primary canine teeth in four groups (n = 15). After pulpectomy and post space preparation with 4 mm depth, composite resin post, prefabricated glass fiber post (Whitepost), customized glass fiber post (Interlig), or customized polyethylene fiber post (Ribbond) were placed in the root canals to provide retention, and the tooth crown was restored with bulk‐fill composite resin. The fracture strength was then measured in a universal testing machine. The fracture mode was also evaluated visually. Results: The mean fracture strength was 22.45 ± 5.06, 33.10 ± 8.5, 30.20 ± 7.33, and 32.61 ± 5.73 N/mm2 in the composite resin post, Whitepost, Interlig, and Ribbond groups, respectively. The fracture strength was significantly lower in the composite group than in the remaining three groups (p = 0.000). No other significant differences were found (p > 0.05). Also, no significant difference was observed among the study groups in the fracture mode (p = 0.241). Conclusion: The composite resin post yielded a significantly lower fracture strength than the prefabricated and customized glass and polyethylene fiber posts, but the fracture mode was not significantly different among the four groups. Background Estimating stature is essential for the purpose of identifying human remains after death. It is common for the extremities or the head to be amputated from the trunk when the body has been severely disfigured. Odontometry's association with stature determination in forensic odontology required an estimate to be established. Objective The objective of this study was to investigate and correlate stature (height) of the individual with the incisoapical length of the tooth Material and Method The study was conducted on 106 participants, in which 53 were female and 53 male cases aged between 21 and 45 years. The study parameters included incisoapical length of maxillary and mandibular central incisor, lateral incisor and canine of both sides measured using cone-beam computed tomography, and height of an individual recorded using stadiometer. Pearson's correlation coefficient was calculated to study the correlation. Results It is observed that the cervicoapical measurement of teeth does not show statistically significant correlation with the stature of the individual with the exception for tooth 22 (r = − 31, p = 0.02), 41(r = − 0.28, p = 0.04), and 42 (r = − 0.30, p = 0.02) among females and tooth 31 (r = − 0.35, p = 0.009) among males. Conclusion A very small number of research on an individual's stature in relation to incisoapical length has been identified in the literature. Gardner's syndrome has been recognized as a hereditary affliction that is autosomal in nature. This disorder is known to exhibit characteristics of familial adenomatous polyposis, of which it is also considered a variation. The features of this syndrome include the gradual development of osteomas and epidermoid cysts, including a characteristic feature that is the noted presence of intestinal polyps, which are generally multiple in number. Additionally, dental anomalies have been observed and recorded in a sizeable ratio of cases encompassing an increased frequency of multiple odontomas that are benign tumors linked to the development of a tooth and tooth agenesis/hypodontia that refers to developmental absence of one or more teeth. The other dental ascertainment includes abnormal morphology of the tooth/teeth as well as the presence of supernumerary teeth and impacted or unerupted teeth. This case report outlines the case of a 59-year-old male patient who had reported to the clinic, and was then diagnosed with Gardner's syndrome post a thorough examination. On radiographic examination, the manifestation of multiple osteomas in the frontal bone was revealed. The presence of a motley of diffused benign lesions of the bone in both the upper and lower jaw as well as the presence of an epidermoid cyst on the scalp was suggestive of an exemplar presentation of Gardner's syndrome. Objective: To evaluate canalis sinuosus (CS) and accessory canalis sinuosus (AC) morphology and their relationship with the impacted canine on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. Methods: The diameter and location of the CS, its distance from the nasal cavity (NC–CS), its distance from the buccal cortical plate (BC–CS), and its distance from the alveolar ridge crest (AR–CS) were evaluated on 1000 CBCT scans. The prevalence and termination of AC and the presence of impacted canines were also evaluated. Results: CS was detected in 89 (8.9%) of 1000 CBCTs. The mean CS diameter was found as 1.34 ± 0.53 mm. No statistically significant difference was found between gender, age, direction, and CS presence and diameter. CS was most frequently seen in regions 11 (23.6%) and 13 (23.6%). The average NC–CS, BC–CS, and AR–CS length was 6.14, 6.06 and 4.35 mm, respectively. AC was detected in 22 patients (24.71%). There was no statistically significant difference between the presence of AC and gender, age, CS diameter, NC–CS, BC–CS, and AR–CS distance. BC–CS length and AR–CS length were statistically significantly higher in patients with impacted canines. Conclusions: It should be kept in mind that the CS diameter, NC–CS, BC–CS, and AR–CS distance may increase in the presence of an impacted canine and the integrity of the neurovascular structure should be preserved. Purpose: To comprehensively analyze the palatal thickness of soft tissues and determine optimal regions for the placement of palatal orthodontic miniscrews. Methods: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images on the coronal plane were obtained from 60 patients (30 female, 30 male; age range 19–45; mean age 32 ± 11), with 3-mm intervals in the regions of the canine (Ca), first premolar (Pr1), second premolar (Pr2), midpoint between the first and second molars (M1-M2), first molar (M1), second molar (M2) and midpalate. Results: The mucosal thickness measurements between the teeth showed significantly greater thickness in the Ca region at the 3 mm point, in the Pr1 region at the 6 mm point, and in the Pr2 region at the 9 and 12 mm points. At the 9 mm point, the Pr1 region demonstrated greater thickness than the M1-M2 whereas the Pr2 region was thicker than the M1 and M1-M2 regions. At the 12 and 15 mm points, the thickness increased from anterior to posterior: the Pr1 region was thinner than the Pr2, M1, and M2 regions and the Pr2 region was thinner than the M2 region. A schematization was devised for the optimal areas recommended for miniscrews in the palatal region. Conclusion: The mucosal thickness in the palatal region increases from anterior to posterior except the midpalatal region. Based on the results, in terms of soft tissue, the most suitable place for miniscrew placement is 6 mm from the gingival margin of the teeth and in the median portion of the palate. Interceptive orthodontics may be indicated in puppies exhibiting dental malocclusion with linguoverted deciduous mandibular canine teeth to alleviate pain and prevent teeth interlock, which may affect growth and development of the mandibles. Historically extraction of deciduous mandibular canine teeth has been recommended as soon as a malocclusion is identified, often as early as 6-8 weeks of age and no later than 12 weeks of age. This early surgical intervention of deciduous teeth extractions risks potential damage to the developing permanent canine teeth resulting in enamel defects often referred to as a Turner's tooth or Turner's hypoplasia. A search of medical records from five veterinary specialty dentistry practices was conducted to identify dogs 8-12 weeks of age who (a) underwent deciduous mandibular canine extractions for management of class 1 or class 2 malocclusion with linguoverted mandibular canine teeth, and (b) were seen for at least one recheck exam to assess for enamel defects on permanent mandibular canine teeth. Furthermore, data was collected to determine the number of dogs that required additional treatment after eruption of the permanent canine teeth due to linguoversion of the permanent canine teeth. All procedures were performed by a board-certified veterinary dentist™ or a supervised veterinary dentistry resident. Seventy-four dogs fit the inclusion criteria and had a total of 143 deciduous mandibular canine teeth extracted, out of which 13 dogs exhibited enamel defects affecting 21 permanent canine teeth. The 13 affected dogs represent a 17.5% cumulative incident rate 13/74 (95%CI 11-28%). Of all extracted teeth, 14.6% (21/143) had enamel defects affecting permanent canine teeth. Twenty-eight dogs required additional treatment to prevent the permanent mandibular canine teeth from causing trauma to the hard palate and gingiva which represented 37.8% (28/74) of all dogs in the study. Age and sex of the dog at the time of extraction were not found to be associated with the likelihood of incidence of enamel defects. This is the first reported rate of enamel defects on permanent mandibular canine teeth following extraction of deciduous mandibular canine teeth and is important to consider when advising or performing extraction of deciduous teeth in dogs. Background/Objectives: Many older adults living in long-term care (LTC) environments have varying numbers of retained natural teeth. The objective of this study was to assess the disease findings based on tooth type and estimate the role of tooth types in occlusion. Methods: We conducted clinical oral examinations of 276 LTC residents. The disease findings were analyzed for each tooth type and to determine their associations with dementia. Results: In total, 67.8% of the participants had molar teeth. Premolars/canines were often present as residual roots and had caries. Deepened periodontal pockets and higher plaque index (PI) values for molars had odds ratios of 2.5 (95% confidence interval [CI] of 1.59–3.91) and 1.61 (95% CI of 1.29–2.02), respectively. Participants with dementia were more likely to have incisors and premolars/canines in the form of root remnants and higher PI scores for all tooth types (p ≤ 0.01), as well as more deepened periodontal pockets in all teeth (p = 0.029), than those without dementia. The median number of remaining molars per participant was 3 out of a maximum of 12 (95% CI 3.4–4.0); thus, they often lacked occlusal contact. Conclusions: The LTC residents' molars were more prone to periodontal problems, whereas their premolars/canines often had caries or were present in the form of root remnants, especially in the participants with dementia. People's teeth should be treated in an easy-to-maintain way before they move into LTC to enable daily oral hygiene measures and maintain oral health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: This study aimed to present three indicators that represent the proximal contact area gap change under intercuspal occlusion and to see if and how these indicators influence food impaction with tight proximal contact. Materials and Methods: Ninety volunteers were recruited for bite force measurement and intraoral scanning. Three‐dimensional surface data and buccal bite data were obtained for 60 impacted and 60 non‐impacted teeth. The scanning data were imported into the Geomagic Studio 2013 to measure three indicators, which included the gap change maximum (Δdm, μm), the buccolingual position of Δdm (P), and the gap expanded buccolingual range (S, mm). The difference between two groups of three indicators and their relationship with food impaction with tight proximal contact were analyzed by the t test, the Pearson chi‐squared test, the nonparametric Mann–Whitney U test, and the binary logistic regression analysis (a = 0.05). Results: All indicators (Δdm, P, and S) were statistically different (p < 0.001, p = 0.002, and p < 0.001) in the impacted and non‐impacted groups. Food impaction with tight proximal contact was affected by Δdm and S (p < 0.001, p = 0.039), but not by P (p = 0.409). Conclusion: The excessive increase of the gap change maximum and the gap expanded buccolingual range under bite force promoted the occurrence of food impaction with tight proximal contact. Clinical Significance: The use of intraoral scanning to measure the characteristics of the proximal contact area gap change under bite force may help to deepen our understanding of the pathogenesis of food impaction with tight proximal contact. Objective: To compare the color change, the risk and intensity of tooth sensitivity (TS), and gingival irritation (GI) of at‐home bleaching applied on the buccal surface only or the buccal and lingual surfaces. Materials and Methods: Sixty patients with canines A2 or darker were selected and their superior arches were randomized in two groups: at‐home bleaching on the buccal‐only or on the buccal and lingual surfaces, with 7.5% hydrogen peroxide, for 1 h daily/2 weeks. The color change was evaluated at baseline, 7, 14 days, and 1 month after bleaching using shade guides scales (ΔSGU) and a spectrophotometer (ΔEAB, ΔE00, and ΔWID). Risk and intensity of TS and GI were recorded daily using visual analogic scale (0–10). Patient satisfaction was evaluated with the orofacial esthetics. Paired t‐test, McNemar's, and Wilcoxon signed‐rank test were used for data analysis (α = 5%). Results: Neither the color change nor the risk/intensity of TS was statistically different between groups (p > 0.05). Patient satisfaction increased after bleaching for both groups (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The addition of one contact surface does not result in an increased whitening degree compared to bleaching applied solely on the buccal surface. Clinical Significance: Understanding the influence of surfaces interacting with the bleaching agent is crucial for comprehending the bleaching mechanism and avoiding unnecessary material expenses. Data on the age of apical closure in felines is limited. Moreover, differences in age of apical closure between male and female cats have not been studied. The aim of this study was to determine the timing of apical closure in cats and determine if sex or position in the dental arch affected closure. In this retrospective descriptive study, intraoral radiographs were obtained at monthly or multiple-monthly intervals for 18 cats. Nine were intact females and 9 were neutered males, ranging from 6 to 9.4 months of age at the start of the study which ranged over an 8-month period. Radiographs were evaluated to establish age of apical closure for all canine teeth as well as the mandibular premolar and molar teeth. Mandibular canine tooth apices closed between 10 and 12 months of age and maxillary canine tooth apices closed between 12 and 14 months of age. The mesial and distal root apices of both the mandibular third and fourth premolar teeth closed between 8 and 9 months. The mandibular first molar tooth mesial and distal root apices closed between 8 and 8.5 months. Root apices of canine teeth closed earlier in female cats than in male cats with mandibular canine tooth root apices closing significantly earlier than maxillary canine tooth roots in both sexes. These findings suggest that there are notable differences in age of apical closure between male and female cats and discernible trends in timing of apical closure among teeth in the dental arcade. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effects of archwire form and power arm positions on maxillary incisors during lingual en masse retraction supported by miniscrew implants, using the finite element analysis method. Methods: Sliding mechanics for lingual en masse retraction were simulated using the finite element method. Power arms were placed mesial and distal to the maxillary canine with straight and mushroom-shaped archwires. Miniscrews provided absolute anchorage for retraction force. Results: When power arms were positioned mesial to the canine teeth, an increase in the intercanine distance was observed, while a decrease was noted when the power arms were distal to the canine tooth. Lateral incisors exhibited a greater torque loss, particularly when the power arm was mesial to the canine tooth. In the central incisors, the mushroom archwire resulted in intrusion, while the straight archwire showed an extrusion tendency. Movements in groups using the straight archwire were less controlled compared to those in groups using the mushroom archwire. Conclusions: The archwire form and the position of the power arm affected the torque loss and vertical position of incisors during lingual en masse retraction supported by miniscrew implants. Statement of the Problem: Dental caries are among the most common oral and dental diseases affecting adults and children. To prevent caries, either the factors that cause caries should be reduced or the host resistance should be increased. Several compounds, such as bioglass, chitosan, and silver diamine fluoride (SDF), can enhance enamel remineralization. Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of chitosan, bioglass, chitosan-bioglass, and SDF compounds on remineralizing primary enamel lesions. Materials and Method: In this in vitro study, seventy-two primary canine teeth were collected. The teeth were exposed to a demineralization solution for 72 hours to create primary caries lesions. The primary Vickers microhardness test (VMT) was conducted to measure the initial values. The samples were randomly divided into six groups (n=12): Group 1: bioglass-chitosan solution; Group 2: chitosan; Group 3: bioglass solution; Group 4: SDF; Group 5: remineralization solution; Group 6: distilled water. The solutions of Groups 1, 2, and 3 were applied to the samples for 7 days, while the SDF solution was applied only once. The samples were immersed in an artificial saliva solution, which was refreshed daily. After the treatment, the final Vickers microhardness test (VMT) values were recorded. The data were analyzed statistically using a two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (p< 0.05). Results: The results indicated a statistically significant effect of remineralizing compounds on both pre-treatment and post-treatment microhardness (p< 0.0001). However, no significant difference in microhardness was observed between the groups studied (p= 0.225). Conclusion: All the compounds utilized in this study demonstrated a significant remineralizing effect on enamel lesions caused by primary caries in primary teeth. The chitosan-bioglass and bioglass groups exhibited the highest levels of remineralization, respectively. However, the comparison between the groups yielded insignificant results due to the dispersion of the samples. Therefore, further studies with larger sample sizes are recommended. Purpose: The aim was to analyze the accuracy of digital models and 3D-printed casts from full-arch digital impressions using two intraoral scanners (iTeroTM and PrimescanTM). Materials and methods: A crossover reliability study was designed, scanning children and teenagers with iTeroTM and PrimescanTM. Accuracy was evaluated by measuring intercanine, intermolar, and ipsilateral canine–molar distances intraorally and comparing these measurements with those from plaster casts, digital models obtained with intraoral scanners, and 3D-printed casts. A paired comparison and a general linear model with a one-way repeated measures ANOVA procedure were carried out with a confidence level of 95% (p ≤ 0.05). Results: A total of 51 subjects were analyzed (mean age 12.35 ± 2.57). Statistical differences (p < 0.05) were found in the upper and lower arch regarding accuracy in comparison to intraoral measurements, except for the iTeroTM-printed cast and canine–molar upper right and intercanine lower distances (p > 0.05 for all comparisons). Regarding a comparison between reproduction methods, the plaster cast oversized the intercanine upper distance in comparison with both intraoral scanners' digital models and the PrimescanTM-printed cast (p = 0.001), but there were no differences in the lower arch (p > 0.05 for all comparisons). Background: Piezocision is a minimally invasive surgical method aiming to accelerate tooth movement. However, its effect was found to be transient, appertaining to the regional acceleratory phenomenon (RAP). Hence, the aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of single and multiple piezocisions on the rate of orthodontic tooth movement (OTM). Moreover, the impact of both protocols on canine tipping and orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption (OIIRR) has been assessed. Methods: Thirty indicated patients for the therapeutic extraction of maxillary first premolars were enlisted in this split-mouth study, and they were randomly split into two equal groups, each including 15 subjects. In the Single Application Group (SAG), one side of the maxillary arch arbitrarily received a single piezocision before the onset of canine retraction, whereas in the Multiple Application Group (MAG), piezocisions were randomly performed on one side, three times on a monthly basis, over the 12-week study period. The contralateral sides of both groups served as the controls. Canine retraction was carried out bilaterally using nickel-titanium closed-coil springs, delivering 150 g of force, and the rate of tooth movement, as well as canine tipping were evaluated on a monthly basis, over a 3-month period. Cone-bean computed tomography scans were also conducted pre- and post- canine retraction, and OIIRR was assessed using Malmgren Index. Results: The reported outcomes revealed a significant increase in the amount of canine retraction, canine tipping, as well as root resorption scores on the experimental sides in both groups SAG and MAG post-retraction (p < 0.001). However, upon comparing the experimental sides in both groups, non-significant differences have been observed between them regarding all the assessed outcomes (p > 0.05). Conclusions: Single and multiple piezocisions effectively accelerate OTM in comparison to conventional orthodontic treatment, with relative outcomes reported by both intervention frequencies. Accordingly, single piezocision is recommended as an adjunct to OTM. Background: To examine the buccolingual inclination of maxillary posterior teeth, curve of Wilson, and transversal dimensions in palatally impacted maxillary canine patients, compared to controls by cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and methods: Pre-treatment images of 22 bilateral, 32 unilateral impacted maxillary canine patients and 30 controls were included. All patients had palatally impacted canines, with no posterior cross-bite. Data were reclassified in quadrants according to the presence of impaction, as the impaction quadrant (right and left quadrants of 22 bilateral impacted cases, and quadrants presenting impaction of 32 unilateral cases, n = 76), unaffected quadrant (quadrant without impaction in 32 unilateral cases, n = 32) and the control quadrant (right and left quadrants of 30 controls, n = 60) to evaluate the buccolingual inclination angle, transversal width, and arch perimeter. Additionally, comparisons were made regarding curve of Wilson and total arch perimeter among bilateral and unilateral impaction groups with the control group. Statistical analysis was performed by one-way ANOVA and Kruskal Wallis tests. Tukey or Dunn tests were used for comparisons between groups in pairs. Results: No significant difference was found for the buccolingual inclination of maxillary posterior teeth and curve of Wilson among groups. The buccolingual inclination of canines in the impaction quadrant was significantly lower than the other quadrants (p < 0.001). Basal bone width at the level of second premolars, and alveolar width at both premolars were significantly narrower in the impaction quadrant than in the unaffected quadrant (p < 0.05). Dental arch width at the level of first premolar was significantly decreased in the impaction quadrant compared to other quadrants (p < 0.05). Arch perimeter was significantly reduced in the impaction quadrant than in the unaffected quadrant (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The presence of bilateral or unilateral palatally impacted maxillary canines did not effect the buccolingual inclination of posterior teeth, and curve of Wilson. Transverse discrepancy was evident in the impaction quadrant even in the absence of posterior cross-bite. Quadrant analysis was particularly useful in evaluating asymmetry for basal bone and alveolar bone widths in the premolar region in patients with unilateral palatally impacted maxillary canine patients. Objectives: Canine-induced root resorption (CIRR) is caused by impacted canines and CBCT images have shown to be more accurate in diagnosing CIRR than panoramic and periapical radiographs with the reported AUCs being 0.95, 0.49, and 0.57, respectively. The aim of this study was to use deep learning to automatically evaluate the diagnosis of CIRR in maxillary incisors using CBCT images. Methods: A total of 50 cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images and 176 incisors were selected for the present study. The maxillary incisors were manually segmented and labeled from the CBCT images by two independent radiologists as either healthy or affected by root resorption induced by the impacted canines. We used five different strategies for training the model: (A) classification using 3D ResNet50 (Baseline), (B) classification of the segmented masks using the outcome of a 3D U-Net pretrained on the 3D MNIST, (C) training a 3D U-Net for the segmentation task and use its outputs for classification, (D) pretraining a 3D U-Net for the segmentation and transfer of the model, and (E) pretraining a 3D U-Net for the segmentation and fine-tuning the model with only the model encoder. The segmentation models were evaluated using the mean intersection over union (mIoU) and Dice coefficient (DSC). The classification models were evaluated in terms of classification accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score. Results: The segmentation model achieved a mean intersection over union (mIoU) of 0.641 and a DSC of 0.901, indicating good performance in segmenting the tooth structures from the CBCT images. For the main classification task of detecting CIRR, Model C (classification of the segmented masks using 3D ResNet) and Model E (pretraining on segmentation followed by fine-tuning for classification) performed the best, both achieving 82% classification accuracy and 0.62 F1-scores on the test set. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed hierarchical, data-efficient deep learning approaches in improving the accuracy of automated CIRR diagnosis from limited CBCT data compared to the 3D ResNet baseline model. Conclusion: The proposed approaches are effective at improving the accuracy of classification tasks and are helpful when the diagnosis is based on the volume and boundaries of an object. While the study demonstrated promising results, future studies with larger sample size are required to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method in enhancing the medical image classification tasks. Background: Hyoid bone is attached to the mandible, tongue, larynx, temporal bone, and cervical spine via different types of muscles or ligaments. The tongue, mandible, and hyoid system play a crucial role in swallowing function. This within subject study aimed to evaluate the impact of mandibular implant overdentures on the displacement of the hyoid bones during the swallowing process. Methods: Twenty five healthy edentulous subjects were selected for participating in the study. New complete dentures were constructed for all the participants. Subsequently two dental implants were inserted in the canine regions of the participant's mandibular arch. In order to retain the mandibular prosthesis in place, ball attachments were incorporated into the mandibular dentures to convert them into implant overdentures. Using 10 ml of thin liquid bolus, videofluoroscopy swallowing examination was performed in three different oral conditions: without complete dentures (WCD), with complete denture (CDs), and with a mandibular implant overdenture (IODs). ANOVA with Bonferroni test was used to analyze the data in order to determine how the hyoid displacement varied throughout different oral conditions. Results: Compared to complete dentures, mandibular implant overdentures showed a significant decrease (P < 0.05) in both anterior hyoid displacement and duration of hyoid maximum anterior excursion (DOHMAE). However, there was a non-significant difference (P > 0.05) between the two oral circumstances in terms of superior hyoid displacement or duration for hyoid maximum elevation (DOHME). There is no penetration or aspiration for both complete denture and implant overdenture oral conditions. Conclusion: Implant retained overdentures have a positive effect on hyoid displacement during swallowing of thin liquid bolus consistency relative to conventional complete dentures. Background: Posttreatment changes after orthodontic treatment are challenging. One of the main reasons for such a phenomenon is the lack of patient compliance with removable retainers especially in the maxillary arch, due to palatal coverage, deterioration of speech, decreased masticatory efficiency, and loss of retainers. Fixed retainers have been introduced to overcome patient compliance and provide longer stable results. However, teeth still show movements when a six-unit fixed retainer is in place. Thus, in this study, an eight-unit fixed retainer was evaluated in an attempt to eliminate unwanted movements. The aim of this research: was to assess short-term positional changes associated with an eight-unit extended maxillary fixed retainer. Materials and methods: A single-arm clinical trial was conducted to address the aim of the study. This research was approved by the institutional review board of the Faculty of Dentistry, Alexandria University (IORG:0008839, No-0479–8/2022). The registration date of this study was 5/06/2023. Twenty-eight patients (19.8 ± 4.5 years) who had finished the active orthodontic phase and started retention had an eight-unit extended maxillary fixed retainer that was bonded to the palatal surface of the maxillary incisors, canines, and the first premolars or the second premolars. Pre-retention and one-year post-retention intra-oral scans were made to produce STL files that were superimposed to determine the amount of tooth change. Additionally, analysis of digital casts and lateral cephalometric radiographs was performed. Results: Statistically significant changes in all planes and the rotation of teeth after one year of retention were found. The upper right lateral incisor exhibited the most evident change in the vertical plane, while the upper right central incisor exhibited the greatest change overall. Minimal changes in the cast measurements were observed. Lateral cephalometric measurements showed minimal changes after one year of retention, and these changes were not statistically significant except in the interincisal angle and the angle between the upper incisor and the line connecting the A-point to the pogonion. Despite the rise in popularity of ceramic braces for adults, the risk of enamel microcracks (EMCs) upon removal remains a significant drawback for both dental professionals and patients. Our study aimed to assess the effects of thermocycling, pre-curing, and co-curing techniques with different bonding agents on the enamel surface of teeth after the removal of ceramic brackets. We also examined the incidence, quantity, length, and direction of EMCs on tooth surfaces. Additionally, the adhesive remnant index (ARI) scores and orthodontic bracket bond failure modes were evaluated and compared. The study divided 40 extracted upper canine teeth into ten groups for further analysis. Two groups had intact enamel as the negative control, while the remaining groups had orthodontic ceramic brackets bonded using different bonding agents and curing techniques. Thermocycling was performed in five groups, and ARI was assessed after debonding. The study findings were statistically significant (p < 0.05) in demonstrating the impact of curing techniques on EMCs and debonding outcomes. Seventh-generation bonding agents resulted in complete adhesive removal (ARI = 0). The microcracks' incidence, number, and length showed insignificant results. Differences in ARI between thermocycler and non-thermocycler samples were insignificant. Both co-curing and pre-curing techniques yielded comparable ARI results. Objectives: The abutments produced with circular symmetry failed to accurately replicate the natural teeth's cervical shapes. The purpose of this study was to measure cervical cross‐sections of maxillary anterior teeth using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images to design anatomic healing abutments. Materials and Methods: CBCT data of 61 patients were analyzed using Ez3D Plus software. Measurements were taken at the cemento‐enamel junction (CEJ) and 1 mm coronal to CEJ for maxillary central incisors, lateral incisors, and canines. Various parameters, including area, perimeter, and eight line segments in the distal (a), disto‐palatal (b), palatal (c), mesio‐palatal (d), mesial (e), mesio‐labial (f), labial (g), and disto‐labial (h) directions, were used to describe dental neck contours. The ratios (f/b and h/d) were analyzed, and differences based on sex and dental arch morphology were explored. Results: Significant differences were found in area and perimeter between males and females, but not in f/b and h/d ratios. Differences in the f/b ratio were observed among dental arch morphologies for maxillary central incisors, lateral incisors, and canines. Conclusions: CBCT measurements of cervical cross‐sections provide more accurate data for designing anatomic healing abutments. The fabrication of anatomical healing abutments needs to consider the influence of gender on cervical size and to explore the potential effect of arch shape on cervical morphology. Clinical Significance: The novel method provides detailed measurements for the description of dental cervical contours for patients with bilateral homonymous teeth missing. Sparganosis is one of the common zoonotic diseases caused by infection with the larval plerocercoids (spargana) of the cestode genus Spirometra. While this parasite distributes globally in canine and feline hosts, human infection is predominantly reported in East Asia, especially China, Korea, Japan, and Thailand. Maybe related to the behavior and food culture, this zoonotic disease is rather rare in South Asia to the Middle East. In these areas, sporadic case reports have been appeared mostly in the local medical journals. To draw a solid picture of sparganosis in these non-endemic areas of Asia, we made an extensive literature survey to gather sparganosis cases in the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East. Objective: To document the successful surgical reconstruction of a composite nasomaxillary and superior labial defect using a fascia lata graft, titanium mesh and angularis oris axial pattern flap in a dog. Case summary: An estimated 2-year-old female intact mixed-breed dog was presented with a composite (hard and soft tissue) nasomaxillary defect, suspected to be caused by a chemical burn. Physical examination revealed nasal discharge, exposed bilateral maxilla and nasal bone, nasomaxillary fistula with air movement, and intrinsic discoloration of the left maxillary canine tooth. The soft tissue lesion extended from the nasal planum rostrally to the medial canthus of the left eye distally and from the right maxillary bone to include a full thickness loss of the left maxillary labium laterally. Computed tomographic images of the head showed chronic osteomyelitis of the maxilla, zygomatic and nasal bones with nasomaxillary fistula and numerous exposed roots of the left maxillary premolars. Staged surgical procedures to address the dentition and nasomaxillary defect were planned. The first procedure consisted of the extraction of periodontally compromised left maxillary premolars, and standard root canal therapy of bilateral maxillary canine teeth. The second procedure consisted of debridement of the non-vital soft and hard tissues and surgical reconstruction of the nasomaxillary defect after virtual surgical planning. Head computed tomography performed 5 months post-operatively revealed a decrease in the size of the osseous defect as well as the resolution of rhinitis. Clinical relevance: This case demonstrates the feasibility of using a combination of soft tissue graft, titanium mesh, and axial pattern flap in managing nasomaxillary defects. Such defects can lead to chronic rhinitis, infection, discomfort, and long-term morbidity. Purpose: To compare glycated multilayered membranes (OV) to a commercially available thin-layer membrane (OP) in a lateral ridge augmentation model in dogs. Materials and Methods: This was designed as a three-arm study, where one negative control (empty defect) was compared to two test arms: alveolar bone defects grafted with a mixture of 90% deproteinized bovine bone mineral and 10% porcine collagen, then covered with either a thick- (OV) or thin-layered (OP) membrane. Animals were randomly divided into three groups corresponding to the final sacrifice times of 4 weeks, 12 weeks, and 24 weeks. Sections underwent microCT, histology, histopathology, and histomorphometry. Results: No statistical differences were observed for OV compared to OP regarding the percentage of mineral volume and mean mineral density, amount of bone maturation, percentage of bone graft and membrane remaining in the grafted area, alveolar ridge width measurements, membrane mineralization, or ossification. Test groups presented significantly higher values compared to the empty control for all the endpoints. Conclusions: Within its limitations, this in vivo study highlighted that multilayered thick glycated membranes can serve as effective occlusive barriers for up to 6 months. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study assessed the histologic and histomorphometric changes of free gingival grafts in a canine model after mechanical expansion. A total of eight epithelialized tissue samples were obtained from the palate of eight Beagle dogs. Samples were cut in half and separated into two groups: the test group, in which a device was used to expand the grafts, and the control group, without expansion. After histologic processing, samples were evaluated by qualitative histology and histomorphometry. Histologic analysis revealed some differences in epithelial cell morphology and keratin layer integrity in the test group compared to the control group. Differences in histomorphometric parameters for the expanded and nonexpanded groups, including the thickness of the keratin layer (15.4 ± 13.4 µm and 32.3 ± 18.1 µm, respectively), thickness of the epithelium (398.0 ± 168.0 µm and 368.4 ± 142.8 µm, respectively), and the area occupied by collagen fibers in the connective tissue (62.0% ± 11.0% and 55.8% ± 7.6%, respectively), were not statistically significant (P > .05). Despite some changes in qualitative histology, free gingival grafts maintained their histomorphometric characteristics after mechanical expansion. These data provide a scientific basis for the use of mechanical expansion as a possible procedure to reduce the morbidity of autogenous grafts because a single soft tissue sample can be expanded before grafting. Background: Impacted maxillary canines are the second most impactions of teeth, causing functional and esthetic complications. Objectives: To study the type, position, and prevalence of maxillary canine impactions among Maharashtra state population of India, with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive, retrospective study was performed using 1200 CBCT images of maxillary jaw, retrieved from the archives of dental radiology records. All the CBCT images were assessed by a senior oral radiologist to evaluate the type, prevalence, and position of maxillary canine impactions based on Yamamoto classification. Statistical analysis was performed using frequency and percentage with a statistical software. Results: Of 1200 images, 62.3% were of males and 37.8% were of females. Unilateral canine impactions (68.3%), on the right side (64%) were more common than the bilateral canine impaction (31.7%). Maxillary canine impaction prevalence was 6.8%, which was higher among females (13.2%) than males (2.9%), with statistically significant differences. Type II canine impactions were the maximum in our population. Conclusions: The maxillary canine impaction prevalence in Maharashtra state population was 6.8% and statistically more among the females. Unilateral impactions on the right side and Type II impactions as per Yamamoto classification were more predominant.

While root canal anatomy in Middle Eastern populations is well‐studied, research on isthmi in mandibular permanent teeth from this region is limited. This retrospective study used cone‐beam computed tomography (CBCT) to examine isthmi prevalence and location, as well as root canal morphologies (per Vertucci's classification) in mandibular permanent teeth from a subpopulation in Ardabil, Iran. The study is aimed at enhancing our understanding of dental anatomical variations in Middle Eastern populations. A total of 3566 teeth from 384 CBCT scans were evaluated in this retrospective study. Mandibular teeth were evaluated on sagittal, coronal, and axial sections regarding the presence of isthmus and root morphology (Vertucci's classification). CBCT scans of 197 males (51.3%) and 187 females (48.7%) were evaluated, with a mean age of 41.1 ± 11.4 years. Isthmi were most prevalent in molar mesial roots, typically located in the middle third for anterior teeth and first premolars and cervical third for posterior teeth. While gender did not play a significant role, the presence of an isthmus in the mesial root of the left second molars was associated with a younger mean patient age (p < 0.05). Root morphology varied across tooth types. Central and lateral incisors predominantly showed Vertucci's Types I and III. Canines and premolars were mostly Type I, with some variation. Molar mesial roots frequently exhibited Types IV and II, while distal roots were predominantly Type I. Statistically significant differences were found between morphology and gender in the first left premolar (Type I more common in women; Type V in men; p < 0.001) and in the right canine (Type I more prevalent in men; Types III and V more prevalent in women; p < 0.001). The results revealed wide variations in root canal morphology and a relatively high prevalence of isthmi in the study population. Odontodysplasia is an uncommon dental developmental disorder associated with enamel, dentin, pulp abnormalities, and overall tooth morphology. The affected tooth is grossly abnormal in size and contour and is commonly associated with swelling of the affected area and failure of eruption. Histologically, the enamel and dentin are hypoplastic and hypomineralized. Odontodyplasia occurs most commonly in response to direct trauma to the developing tooth bud (enamel organ and dental follicle). Data on the prevalence and features of non-traumatic odontodysplasia are lacking. Medical records of dogs diagnosed with odontodysplasia were reviewed at the William R. Pritchard Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH), University of California, Davis, for 10 years (from 2013 to 2023). Dogs with a known history of facial trauma, persistent deciduous tooth or teeth over the region of odontodysplastic tooth or teeth, and endodontic disease of the persistent deciduous tooth or teeth were excluded from the study. Twenty-eight dogs were included in this retrospective study, representing an incidence of 1.4 per 100 dogs presenting over 10 years. Regional odontodysplasia (RO) was identified in twenty-two dogs, and generalized odontodysplasia (GO) was found in six dogs. Both comprehensive oral examination and diagnostic imaging were essential in diagnosing and assessing the presence of odontodysplasia. Awake oral examination failed to identify odontodysplasia in almost 70% of the RO cases. Secondary diseases or lesions in odontodysplastic teeth, such as periodontal disease, endodontal disease, and perio-endo lesions, were commonly seen and were particularly more frequently identified in strategic teeth (canine and carnassial teeth) than non-strategic ones. Similarities, such as female predilection, maxilla more commonly affected, and clinical signs, were observed between RO in dogs and those reported in people. Background: This study aims to determine the position of impacted maxillary canines on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images, to determine the presence of resorption in adjacent teeth, and to investigate the position and type of resorption of impacted canines if resorption is present. Methods: Patients over 14 years of age with maxillary canine teeth who had CBCT images taken for any dental reason were included in the study. Resorption of teeth adjacent to maxillary canines was analyzed according to transversal, vertical, and buccopalatinal positions on the CBCT. The study evaluated 162 maxillary canine teeth on tomography images of 134 patients. Results: Of the affected adjacent teeth, 32.1% of the central incisor, 58.0% of the lateral incisor, and 19.1% of the first premolars showed mild-to-severe resorption. The relationships between transversal position and resorption in the central and lateral incisor, vertical position and resorption in the central incisor and buccopalatinal position and resorption in the first premolars were found to be significant. Maxillary canine teeth can cause mild-to-severe resorption of adjacent teeth, especially lateral incisors. Conclusion: For this reason, we think that a detailed examination with CBCT is essential in the early diagnosis of resorption of adjacent teeth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The mandible size variability including sexual size dimorphism (SSD) of the cave lion (Panthera spelaea) in the Pleistocene of Northern Eurasia time has been studied basing on the univariate and multivariate statistical analyses of 76 specimens from 43 localities. It has been confirmed that SSD in adult P. spelaea, as well as in extant P. leo, is the dominant form of group variability of mandible and, to somewhat lesser extent, of variability of cheek teeth. The lowest degree of SSD has been found in a relatively small Beringian subspecies, P. spelaea vereshchagini. The geographical variability of the cave lion from Western to Eastern Eurasia was not a cline at least in the Late Pleistocene. Our results confirm a decrease in overall mandible size from the Middle Pleistocene to the Late Pleistocene over a large part of the species' range. We speculate that evolutionary changes in mandible size, lower canines or cheek teeth may have proceeded at different rates, allometry and probable heterochrony. Our results have added a new evidence to support the subspecies status of the Beringian lion (P. spelaea vereshchagini), but they are insufficient for other decisions on cave lion taxonomy at the subspecies level. Aim: To evaluate the suitability of a Doppler ultrasound probe in detecting the greater palatine artery or its greater branches non‐invasively. Materials and Methods: The palatal mucosa of 108 participants (median age 34 years, 51 female) was systematically divided into transversal sectors, each aligning with the positions of the upper molars (M), premolars (P) and canine teeth (C), aiming to facilitate precise and consistent localization of the detected palatal blood vessel across different patients. Blood flow of the palatal blood vessels, presumably, was located by scanning the palatal vault bilaterally using an 8‐MHz ultrasound probe linked to a transducer. The distance to the corresponding tooth was measured using a millimetre‐scale periodontal probe. Results: Within the regions of M2 to P1, the ultrasound transducer gave a delimitable acoustic pulse signal in 80%–98% of all measurements. The measured median distances between the determined position of the artery and the corresponding teeth ranged from 13 to 15 mm, with smaller distances in the anterior region. In several sectors, the distance was significantly higher for men (C: p =.048; P1: p =.041, M1: p <.01; M2: p =.034). Conclusions: Use of the Doppler ultrasound transducer might be a promising approach to non‐invasively detect relevant palatine blood vessels preoperatively. Evidence of porcine oral pathology in client-owned domestic pigs has been reported in recent literature. The most common abnormalities are missing teeth and periodontal disease. This case series reviews the diagnosis and treatment of dental disease in 8 pet Vietnamese Pot-Bellied Pigs (Sus scrofa domesticus) over a 6-year period (2015-2021). Inclusion criteria included pigs over 1 year of age that had at least 2 sequential visits involving photographs, full-mouth intraoral radiographs, and dental charting. Eight pigs were identified for study inclusion. The study population included 4 castrated males, 3 spayed females, and 1 intact female. The 8 subjects had a total of 28 visits. Fifty-five intraoral dental extractions were performed and complete healing of 44 extraction sites was observed (11 sites were lost to follow up). Canine tooth reduction was performed on 52 tusks in 7 pigs with exposure of 1 pulp that was treated by partial pulpectomy and direct pulp capping. Restoration of carious lesions was performed on 4 teeth. The most commonly extracted teeth were the right and left maxillary first molars (10 of 47 teeth). Reasons for tooth extraction included: periodontal disease, complicated crown fracture, nonvital +/− periapical pathology, and persistent deciduous teeth. Additional treatments ranged from type 1 crown lengthening with restoration of carious lesions, tusk trimming, closed and open root planing, dental extractions, ultrasonic scaling, and polishing. A 7-month-old, male, Weimaraner dog was presented for maxillary swelling. Clinical evaluation including radiographs and computed tomography revealed a large cystic lesion, unerupted right maxillary canine tooth, and mass presumed to be a compound odontoma. The cyst and mass were expansile and occupied a large portion of the nasal cavity displacing anatomical structures of the maxilla. The mass was excised via curettage through an intraoral surgical approach and the unerupted tooth and cystic lining were removed. Histopathology supported dentigerous cyst and compound odontoma. This case confirms the first report of concurrent development of dentigerous cyst and compound odontoma in a dog with successful treatment and 18-month follow-up with no recurrence. Background: The intrusion of maxillary anterior teeth is often required and there are various intrusion modes with mini-implants in clear aligner treatment. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of maxillary anterior teeth intrusion with different intrusion modes, aiming to provide references for precise and safe intrusion movements in clinical practice. Methods: Cone-beam computed tomography and intraoral optical scanning data of a patient were collected. Finite element models of the maxilla, maxillary dentition, periodontal ligaments (PDLs), clear aligner (CA), attachments, and mini-implants were established. Different intrusion modes of the maxillary anterior teeth were simulated by changing the mini-implant site (between central incisors, between central and lateral incisor, between lateral incisor and canine), loading site (between central incisors, on central incisor, between central and lateral incisor, between lateral incisor and canine), and loading mode (labial loading and labiolingual loading). Ten conditions were generated and intrusive forces of 100 g were applied totally. Then displacement tendency of the maxillary anterior teeth and CA, and stress of the PDLs were analyzed. Results: For the central incisor under condition L14 and for the canine under conditions L11, L13, L23, and L33, the intrusion amount was negative. Under other conditions, the intrusion amount was positive. The labiolingual angulation of maxillary anterior teeth exhibited positive changes under all conditions, with greater changes under linguoincisal loading. The mesiodistal angulation of canine exhibited positive changes under labial loading, while negative changes under linguoincisal loading except for condition L14. Conclusions: The intrusion amount, labiolingual and mesiodistal angulations of the maxillary anterior teeth were affected by the mini-implant site, loading site, and loading mode. Labial and linguoincisal loading may have opposite effects on the intrusion amount of maxillary anterior teeth and the mesiodistal angulation of canine. Objectives: To evaluate the feasibility of using the pulp volume (Pv) to total volume (Tv) ratio (Pv:Tv), obtained from cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of single-rooted teeth, for age estimation in a Brazilian population sample. Methods: After obtaining approval from the ethics committee, the study commenced by applying inclusion criteria to screen CBCT scans, resulting in a probability-based sample of participants aged 18 years and older (ranging from 18 to 82 years, with a mean age of 46.44 years). A total of 517 single-rooted teeth, including maxillary central incisors (CI), mandibular canines (C), and mandibular first premolars (FP), were chosen based on excellent agreement values (> 0.9). Pv and Tv measurements were conducted using semi-automatic segmentation with ITK-SNAP 3.8 software. Statistical analysis was performed using Jamovi software, with a significance level set at 5% (α = 0.05). Results: A strong negative correlation (r > −0.7) was observed between chronological age and the Pv:Tv ratio across all examined teeth. However, when conducting regression analysis with Pv:Tv data and chronological age as the independent variable, only the mandibular FP teeth exhibited a normal distribution. The resulting linear model demonstrated moderate predictive value (approximately 64%) in explaining the variance in chronological age, but caution should be exercised when interpreting these findings. Conclusions: The method of measuring individual tooth volume using CBCT to estimate chronological age via Pv:Tv has been demonstrated as effective and reproducible within the Brazilian population sample. Canine health is consistently affected by the circulation of the H3N2 strain of canine influenza virus (CIV). Prior research has indicated that the isolation rate of H3N2 CIVs in dogs has gradually increased in China, and these viruses have progressively adapted to humans over the course of their evolution within canine hosts, posing a significant public health threat. However, the key factors influencing the spread of CIVs remain elusive. From January 2020 to December 2022, during the COVID-19 pandemic, strict epidemic prevention policies were implemented in China. Thus, this measure provides an ideal model for studying factors influencing the prevalence of CIVs. In this study, we continuously monitored the prevalence of CIVs in China before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. We found that the pathogen detection rate and seropositivity rate of domestic CIVs significantly declined after the implementation of epidemic control measures. However, after restrictions on human movement were lifted in 2023, the circulation of CIVs gradually increased. Our results demonstrate that restricting human activity directly impacts the epidemic caused by CIVs and provide a theoretical basis for the implementation of control measures during outbreaks of zoonotic diseases in human companion animals. Objective: To present a case report of maxillary lateral incisor root regeneration after severe root resorption, treated with photobiomodulation (PBM). Background: Impacted maxillary canines often come with the risk of maxillary lateral incisor root resorption, which is widely recognized as the predominant adverse effect in these situations. This progressive process of root resorption is currently irreversible, with no known way to reverse it. Materials and methods: A male patient was 14 years old. Radiographically it was observed that canine 23 is impacting against the root of 22 producing signs of root resorption and having a less than 1:1 crown-to-root ratio with mobility grade 1. From the beginning of the treatment, PBM-assisted orthodontics was proposed. To address the patient's dental concerns, the treatment plan outlined the extraction of the deciduous upper left canine tooth leaving the lateral as long as possible in the mouth. During each appointment, PBM was applied with a diode laser. The wavelength was 810 nm, Ap = 0.2 W, 4.4 J, 22 sec every 21 days, 13 applications in total (57.2J), with a 400 µm inactive surgical tip, in a scanning movement, 1mm from the mucosa while moving following the vestibular surface of the upper left lateral and canine roots. Results: After 12 months, the 22 had root neoformation and complete closure of the apex with vitality. Conclusions: PBM with an 810 nm diode laser in this clinical case promoted root regeneration of an upper lateral incisor, with severe root resorption, owing to an impacted maxillary canine while still vital. Objective: To evaluate the effect of continuous arch and piggyback mechanics in a straight wire appliance (SWA) for the alignment of buccal and variably vertically positioned maxillary canines. Methods: A three-dimensional finite element model with near-normal occlusion and buccal and vertically displaced maxillary canines was used. Two groups were created to simulate two commonly used SWAs techniques, continuous archwire (Group 1) and piggyback models (Group 2). Each group had three subgroups with varying vertical displacement of the canine from 2 to 6 mm from the occlusal plane. The displacement and stress distribution were noted in each group. Results: As the vertical displacement increased in Group 1, the concentration of von Mises stress increased progressively at the incisal third (0.36, 0.41 and 0.44 MPa) at 2, 4, and 6 mm, respectively, with decreased maximum occlusal movement in the vertical plane with respect to the canine. Group 2 exhibited a similar pattern but greater occlusal movement of the canine compared with Group 1. Conclusion: A vertical displacement of 4 mm is the optimal level at which continuous arch mechanics should be considered. Introduction: Tooth fracture is one of the most common traumatic maxillofacial injuries in dogs and cats. For fractures with pulp exposure occurring in functionally important teeth, the literature indicates that root canal treatment (RCT) is an effective therapy option that may be the remedy of choice before extraction. The most commonly reported fractures in the United States involve canine teeth; however, fractures of the maxillary fourth premolars are more common in Korea, where there are many small-and medium-sized dogs. RCT mechanically and chemically removes pulp tissue and bacteria (cleaning and shaping) from the infected root canal, and obturates the root canal with filling material to restore tooth functionality without inflammation. Various techniques, instruments, and materials used in humans have been modified for application in veterinary dentistry. Methods: This study analyzed the results of RCT of the maxillary fourth premolar in 120 small-and medium-sized dogs (weighing less than 25 kg) using three different sealers (silicone-based sealer, bioceramic sealer, and calcium hydroxidebased sealer) through a simple application of the single-cone technique. Results: The overall success rate of RCT in maxillary fourth premolars was 90.83%, with 8.33% no evidence of failure (NEF) and 0.83% failure. Discussion: There were no significant differences between the three different sealers. Furthermore, preexisting periapical lesion (PAL) was reconfirmed as a factor in reducing the success rate of RCT. Background: CBCT is widely used in dentistry and is used for a variety of purposes. The presence of different artifacts can reduce the quality of images. Since the implants mainly contain metals, they can cause many artifacts in CBCT images. Due to the importance of CBCT and the effects of artifacts on the final image quality, this study was conducted to investigate the effect of FOV size on the artifacts. Methods: Three human skulls with unbroken mandible and maxilla were selected. CBCT images were prepared under normal exposure conditions and with three ranges of FOV (4 × 5 cm2, 5 × 8 cm2, 8 × 8 cm2). Then an implant was placed in the empty dental sockets in the incisor, canine, and premolar areas, and CBCT images were taken with similar conditions. The Hounsfield Unit obtained before and after implant placement was compared, and their difference was considered as metal artifact. Data were analyzed using two-factor variance analysis. Results: In this study, the mean difference of artifacts with a large FOV in both jaws and in the mandible for medium and small radiation ranges from the central to the premolar side was always decreasing. However, in the maxilla for the medium and small radiation ranges, the mean difference increased from the central side to the canine, but again decreased relatively significantly from the canine to the premolar. The mean interaction between the dental areas and the FOV sizes was not significant (p = 0.997), and it was found that the amount of artifacts in the studied areas does not change with changing the size of the FOV. Also there was no significant difference of artifacts between the three types of FOV size (p = 0.730), but there was a significant difference between the dental areas (p = 0.020). Conclusions: According to the findings of this study, it can be concluded that the amount of metal artifacts is not related to the size of FOV. Molar and incisor microwear reflect aspects of food choice and ingestive behaviors in living primates and have both been used to infer the same for fossil samples. Canine microwear, however, has received less attention, perhaps because of the prominent role canines play in social display and because they are used as weapons–while outside of a few specialized cases, their involvement in diet related behaviors has not been obvious. Here, we posit that microwear can also provide glimpses into canine tooth use in ingestion. Canines of Sumatran long‐tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis), agile gibbons (Hylobates agilis), lar gibbons (Hylobates lar), Thomas' leaf monkeys (Presbytis thomasi), and orangutans (Pongo abelii), and two African great apes, bonobos (Pan paniscus) and common chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii), were considered. The labial tips of maxillary canine replicas were scanned using a white‐light confocal profiler, and both feature and texture analyses were used to characterize microwear surface patterning. The taxa exhibited significant differences in canine microwear. In some cases, these were consistent with variation in reported anterior tooth use such that, for example, the orangutans, known to use their front teeth extensively in ingestion, had the highest median number of microwear features on their canines, whereas the gibbons, reported to use their front teeth infrequently in food acquisition, had the lowest. The purpose of this study was to compare various formulas for idealized proportions of the maxillary incisors to the actual dimensions of natural teeth. The Mondelli formula 1 (MFl), Mondelli formula 2 (MF2), Albers formula (AF), esthetic proportion (EP) for width and height of anterior teeth, and golden ratio (GR) were calculated for a total of 50 dental students (30 women and 20 men) who participated in the study. The following measurements were obtained directly in the participant:s mouth with a digital caliper: the mesio- distal and incisogingival dimensions of the maxillary central proporincisors, lateral incisors, and canines: the intercanine distance; and the smile width. The participants were photographed, and the smile width was also measured on the photographs. The MFl and MF2 were each calculated twice, using both direct measurements and photographic measurements. The projected central incisor widths calculated using the MFl, MF2, and AF were compared among themselves and against the actual measurements using analysis of variance and Fisher test for multiple comparisons (a = 0.05). The EP and GR were analyzed using descriptive statistics. There was a statistically significant difference between all of the widths projected by the formulas and the actual widths of the central incisors (P < 0.05). Whether calculated from a direct or a photographic measurement, the incisor widths projected by the MFl and MF2 were statistically similar to each other (P > 0.05). The EP values were similar to those reported in the literature. Only 2% of the participants had an incisor width ratio (central incisor/ formulateral incisor) that matched the GR of 1.618, while 86% fell within the range of 1.2 to 1.4. Overall, the proportions calcu- lated with the MFl, MI:2, Ali EP, and GR did not exactly match the actual dimensions of natural teeth. The formulas and the formuproportions available in the literature can assist in esthetic planning, but the individual characteristics of each patient and expertise of the dentist should guide treatment for each case.
