The suppression of ferroquadrupolar order in TmVO$_4$ in a magnetic field is well-described by the transverse field Ising model, enabling detailed studies of critical dynamics near the quantum phase transition. We describe nuclear magnetic resonance measurements in pure and Y-doped single crystals. The non-Kramers nature of the ground state doublet leads to a unique form of the hyperfine coupling that exclusively probes the transverse field susceptibility. Our results show that this quantity diverges at the critical field, in contrast to the mean-field prediction. Furthermore, we find evidence for quantum critical fluctuations present near Tm-rich regions in Y-doped crystals at levels beyond which long-range order is suppressed, suggesting the presence of quantum Griffiths phases., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

We present nuclear magnetic resonance data in BaFe$_2$As$_2$ in the presence of pulsed strain fields that are interleaved in time with the radiofrequency excitation pulses. In this approach, the precessing nuclear magnetization acquires a phase shift that is proportional to the strain and pulse time. The sensitivity in this approach is limited by the homogeneous decoherence time, $T_2$, rather than the inhomogeneous linewidth. We measure the nematic susceptibility as a function of temperature, and demonstrate three orders of magnitude improvement in sensitivity. This approach will enable studies of the strain response in a broad range of materials that previously were inaccessible due to inhomogeneous broadening., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

We present nuclear magnetic (NMR) and qudrupole (NQR) resonance and magnetization data in the normal state of the topological crystalline superconductor LaNiGa$_2$. We find no evidence of magnetic fluctuations or enhanced paramagnetism. These results suggest that the time-reversal symmetry breaking previously reported in the superconducting state of this material is not driven by strong electron correlations., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

Using spin-echo Nuclear Magnetic Resonance in the model Transverse-Field Ising system TmVO$_4$, we show that low frequency quantum fluctuations at the quantum critical point have a very different effect on $^{51}$V nuclear-spins than classical low-frequency noise or fluctuations that arise at a finite temperature critical point. Spin-echos filter out the low frequency classical noise but not the quantum fluctuations. This allows us to directly visualize the quantum critical fan and demonstrate the persistence of quantum fluctuations at the critical coupling strength in TmVO$_4$ to high temperatures in an experiment that remains transparent to finite temperature classical phase transitions. These results show that while dynamical decoupling schemes can be quite effective in eliminating classical noise in a qubit, a quantum critical environment may lead to rapid entanglement and decoherence., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

We present nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), neutron diffraction, magnetization, and transport measurements on a single crystal and powder of CeVGe$_3$. This material exhibits heavy fermion behavior at low temperature, accompanied by antiferromagnetic (AFM) order below 5.8 K. We find that the magnetic structure is incommensurate with AFM helical structure, characterized by a magnetic modulated propagation vector of $(0, 0, 0.49)$ with in-plane moments rotating around the $c$-axis. The NMR Knight shift and spin-lattice relaxation rate reveal a coherence temperature $T^*\sim 15$ K, and the presence of significant antiferromagnetic fluctuations reminiscent of the archetypical heavy fermion compound CeRhIn$_5$. We further identify a metamagnetic transition above $H_m\sim 2.5$ T for magnetic fields perpendicular to $c$. We speculate that the magnetic structure in this field-induced phase consists of a superposition with both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic components, which is consistent with the NMR spectrum in this region of the phase diagram. Our results thus indicate that CeVGe$_3$ is a hexagonal structure analog to tetragonal CeRhIn$_5$., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures

TmVO$_{4}$ exhibits ferroquadrupolar order of the Tm 4f electronic orbitals at low temperatures, and is a model system for Ising nematicity that can be tuned continuously to a quantum phase transition via magnetic fields along the $c$-axis. Here we present $^{51}$V nuclear magnetic resonance data in magnetic fields perpendicular to the $c$-axis in a single crystal that has been carefully cut by a plasma focused ion beam to an ellipsoidal shape to minimize the inhomogeneity of the internal demagnetization field. The resulting dramatic increase in spectral resolution enabled us to resolve the anisotropy of the electric field gradient and to measure the magnetic and quadrupolar relaxation channels separately. Perpendicular magnetic fields nominally do not couple to the low energy degrees of freedom, but we find a significant nonlinear contribution for sufficiently large fields that give rise to a rich phase diagram. The in-plane magnetic field can act either as an effective transverse or longitudinal field to the Ising nematic order, depending on the orientation relative to the principle axes of the quadrupole order, and leads to a marked in-plane anisotropy in both relaxation channels. We find that the small in-plane transverse fields initially enhance the ferroquadrupolar ordering temperature but eventually suppress the long-range order. We tentatively ascribe this behavior to the competing effects of field-induced mixing of higher energy crystal field states and the destabilizing effects of field-induced quantum fluctuations., Comment: 15 pages, 13 figures

Nitrogen-vacancy color centers in diamond have attracted broad attention as quantum sensors for both static and dynamic magnetic, electrical, strain and thermal fields, and are particularly attractive for quantum sensing under pressure in diamond anvil cells. Optically-based nuclear magnetic resonance may be possible at pressures greater than a few GPa, and offers an attractive alternative to conventional Faraday-induction based detection. Here we present AC sensing results and demonstrate synchronized readout up to 6 GPa, but find that the sensitivity is reduced due to inhomogeneities of the microwave field and pressure within the sample space. We investigate the effectiveness of the Inverse Laplace Transform (ILT) analysis method to extract the distribution of relaxation rates from nuclear magnetic resonance data with stretched exponential relaxation. Stretched-relaxation is a hallmark of a distribution of relaxation rates, and an analytical expression exists for this distribution for the case of a spin-1/2 nucleus. We compare this theoretical distribution with those extracted via the ILT method for several values of the stretching exponent and at different levels of experimental noise. The ILT accurately captures the distributions for $\beta \lesssim 0.7$, and for signal to noise ratios greater than $\sim 40$; however the ILT distributions tend to introduce artificial oscillatory components. We further use the ILT approach to analyze stretched relaxation for spin $I>1/2$ and find that the distributions are accurately captured by the theoretical expression for $I=1/2$. Our results provide a solid foundation to interpret distributions of relaxation rates for general spin $I$ in terms of stretched exponential fits., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

TmVO$_4$ exhibits ferroquadrupolar order below 2.15 K with a well-isolated non-Kramers ground state doublet, and is a model system to understand Ising nematic order. We present $^{51}$V nuclear magnetic resonance data as a function of field orientation in a single crystal. Although the spectra are well understood in terms of direct dipolar hyperfine couplings, the spin lattice relaxation rate exhibits strong anisotropy that cannot be understood in terms of magnetic fluctuations. We find that the spin lattice relaxation rate scales with the shear elastic constant associated with the ferroquadrupole phase transition, suggesting that quadrupole (nematic) fluctuations dominate the spin lattice relaxation for in-plane fields., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We report $^{77}$Se NMR data in the normal and superconducting states of a single crystal of FeSe for several different field orientations. The Knight shift is suppressed in the superconducting state for in-plane fields, but does not vanish at zero temperature. For fields oriented out of the plane, little or no reduction is observed below $T_c$. These results reflect spin-singlet pairing emerging from a nematic state with large orbital susceptibility and spin-orbit coupling. The spectra and spin-relaxation rate data reveal electronic inhomogeneity that is enhanced in the superconducting state, possibly arising from enhanced density of states in the vortex cores. The transferred hyperfine interaction between nuclear and electron spins in an heavy fermion material depends on the hybridization between the $f$-electron orbitals and those surrounding a distant nucleus. In CeMIn$_5$ (M=Rh, Ir, Co), both the hyperfine coupling to the two indium sites as well as the crystalline electric field at the Ce are strongly dependent on the transition metal. We measure a series of CeRh$_{1-x}$Ir$_x$In$_5$ crystals and find that the hyperfine coupling reflects the orbital anisotropy of the ground state Ce 4$f$ wavefunction. These findings provide direct proof that the localized to itinerant transition is dominated by hybridization out of the Ce-In plane in this system., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

Kitaev's honeycomb spin-liquid model and its proposed realization in materials such as $\alpha$-RuCl$_3$, Li$_2$IrO$_3$ and Na$_2$IrO$_3$ continue to present open questions about how the dynamics of a spin-liquid are modified in the presence of non-Kitaev interactions as well as the presence of inhomogeneities. Here we use $^{23}$Na nuclear magnetic resonance to probe both static and dynamical magnetic properties in single crystal Na$_2$IrO$_3$. We find that the NMR shift follows the bulk susceptibility above 30 K but deviates from it below; moreover below $T_N$ the spectra show a broad distribution of internal magnetic fields. Both of these results provide evidence for inequivalent magnetic sites at low temperature, suggesting inhomogeneities are important for the magnetism. The spin-lattice relaxation rate is isotropic and diverges at $T_N$, suggesting that the Kitaev cubic axes may control the critical quantum spin fluctuations. In the ordered state, we observe gapless excitations, which may arise from site substitution, emergent defects from milder disorder, or possibly be associated with nearby quantum paramagnetic states distinct from the Kitaev spin liquid., Comment: To appear in PRB as Rapid Communication

$^{115}$In Nuclear magnetic resonance data are presented for a series of Ce$_{1-x}$La$_x$CoIn$_5$ crystals with different La dilutions, $x$. Multiple In(1) sites associated with different numbers of nearest-neighbor cerium atoms exhibit different Knight shifts and spin lattice relaxation rates. Analysis of the temperature dependence of these sites reveals both an evolution of the heavy electron coherence as a function of dilution, as well as spatial inhomogeneity associated with a complete suppression of antiferromagnetic fluctuations in the vicinity of the La sites. Quantum critical fluctuations persist within disconnected Ce clusters with dilution levels up to 75%, despite the fact that specific heat shows Fermi liquid behavior in dilute samples., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures

The Kondo and Periodic Anderson Model (PAM) are known to provide a microscopic picture of many of the fundamental properties of heavy fermion materials and, more generally, a variety of strong correlation phenomena in $4f$ and $5f$ systems. In this paper, we apply the Determinant Quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) method to include disorder in the PAM, specifically the removal of a fraction $x$ of the localized orbitals. We determine the evolution of the coherence temperature $T^*$, where the local moments and conduction electrons become entwined in a heavy fermion fluid, with $x$ and with the hybridization $V$ between localized and conduction orbitals. We recover several of the principal observed trends in $T^*$ of doped heavy fermions, and also show that, within this theoretical framework, the calculated Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) relaxation rate tracks the experimentally measured behavior in pure and doped CeCoIn$_5$. URu$_2$Si$_2$ exhibits an anomalous peak in the nonlinear magnetic susceptibility at the hidden order transition. In order to investigate this anomaly, we conducted direct magnetization measurements and investigated the detailed angular dependence of the $^{29}$Si nuclear magnetic resonance Knight shift tensor. We find that the nonlinear magnetization is smaller than previously reported, and the analogous nonlinear Knight shift tensor is below the detection limit. The electric field gradient (EFG) tensor at the $^{75}$As site couples to the orbital occupations of the As p-orbitals and is a sensitive probe of local nematicity in BaFe$_2$As$_2$. We use nuclear magnetic resonance to measure the nuclear quadrupolar splittings and find that the EFG asymmetry responds linearly to the presence of a strain field in the paramagnetic phase. We extract the nematic susceptibility from the slope of this linear response as a function of temperature and find that it diverges near the structural transition in agreement with other measures of the bulk nematic susceptibility. Optically detected magnetic resonance of nitrogen vacancy centers in diamond offers novel routes to both DC and AC magnetometry in diamond anvil cells under high pressures ($>3$ GPa). However, a serious challenge to realizing experiments has been the insertion of microwave radiation in to the sample space without screening by the gasket material. We utilize designer anvils with lithographically-deposited metallic microchannels on the diamond culet as a microwave antenna. We detected the spin resonance of an ensemble of microdiamonds under pressure, and measure the pressure dependence of the zero field splitting parameters. These experiments enable the possibility for all-optical magnetic resonance experiments on sub-$\mu$L sample volumes at high pressures., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

We present the design and construction of an NMR probe to investigate single crystals under strain at cryogenic temperatures. The probe head incorporates a piezoelectric-based apparatus from Razorbill Instruments that enables both compressive and tensile strain tuning up to strain values on the order of 0.3% with a precision of 0.001%. $^{75}$As NMR in BaFe$_2$As$_2$ reveals large changes to the electric field gradient, and indicates that the strain is homogeneous to within 16% over the volume of the NMR coil., Comment: 9 figures

We apply the first-order reversal curve (FORC) method, borrowed from studies of ferromagnetic materials, to the magneto-structural phase transition of FeTe. FORC measurements reveal two features in the hysteretic phase transition, even in samples where traditional temperature measurements display only a single transition. For Fe1.13Te, the influence of magnetic field suggests that the main feature is primarily structural while a smaller, slightly higher-temperature transition is magnetic in origin. By contrast Fe1.03Te has a single transition which shows a uniform response to magnetic field, indicating a stronger coupling of the magnetic and structural phase transitions. We also introduce uniaxial stress, which spreads the distribution width without changing the underlying energy barrier of the transformation. The work shows how FORC can help disentangle the roles of the magnetic and structural phase transitions in FeTe., Comment: 8 pages

The iron-based high temperature superconductors exhibit a rich phase diagram reflecting a complex interplay between spin, lattice, and orbital degrees of freedom [1-4]. The nematic state observed in many of these compounds epitomizes this complexity, by entangling a real-space anisotropy in the spin fluctuation spectrum with ferro-orbital order and an orthorhombic lattice distortion [5-7]. A more subtle and much less explored facet of the interplay between these degrees of freedom arises from the sizable spin-orbit coupling present in these systems, which translates anisotropies in real space into anisotropies in spin space. Here, we present a new technique enabling nuclear magnetic resonance under precise tunable strain control, which reveals that upon application of a tetragonal symmetry-breaking strain field, the magnetic fluctuation spectrum in the paramagnetic phase of BaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ also acquires an anisotropic response in spin-space. Our results unveil a hitherto uncharted internal spin structure of the nematic order parameter, indicating that similar to liquid crystals, electronic nematic materials may offer a novel route to magneto-mechanical control., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

We report $^{31}$P and $^{29}$Si NMR in single crystals of URu$_2$Si$_{2-x}$P$_x$ for $x=0.09$ and $x=0.33$. The spectra in the $x=0.33$ sample are consistent with a homogenous commensurate antiferromagnetic phase below $T_N \sim 37$ K. The Knight shift exhibits an anomaly at the coherence temperature, $T^*$, that is slightly enhanced with P doping. Spin lattice relaxation rate data indicate that the density of states is suppressed for $x=0.09$ below 30 K, similar to the undoped compound, but there is no evidence of long range order at this concentration. We report the experimental details of how mechanical detwinning can be implemented in tandem with high sensitivity nuclear magnetic resonance measurements and use this setup to measure the in-plane anisotropy of the spin-lattice relaxation rate in underdoped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ with $x=0.048$. The anisotropy reaches a maximum of 30\% at $T_{N}$, and the recovery data reveal that the glassy behavior of the spin fluctuations present in the twinned state persist in the fully detwinned crystal. A theoretical model is presented to describe the spin-lattice relaxation rate in terms of anisotropic nematic spin fluctuations., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Heavy fermion systems, and other strongly correlated electron materials, often exhibit a competition between antiferromagnetic (AF) and singlet ground states. Using exact Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations, we examine the effect of impurities in the vicinity of such AF- singlet quantum critical points, through an appropriately defined impurity susceptibility, $\chi_{imp}$. Our key finding is a connection, within a single calculational framework, between AF domains induced on the singlet side of the transition, and the behavior of the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation rate $1/T_1$. We show that local NMR measurements provide a diagnostic for the location of the QCP which agrees remarkably well with the vanishing of the AF order parameter and large values of $\chi_{imp}$. We connect our results with experiments on Cd-doped CeCoIn$_5$.

We report 29Si nuclear magnetic resonance measurements of single crystals and aligned powders of URu2Si2 under pressure in the hidden order and paramagnetic phases. We find that the Knight shift decreases with applied pressure, consistent with previous measurements of the static magnetic susceptibility. Previous measurements of the spin lattice relaxation time revealed a partial suppression of the density of states below 30 K. This suppression persists under pressure, and the onset temperature is mildly enhanced.

We present evidence for nuclear spin-lattice relaxation driven by glassy nematic fluctuations in isovalent P-doped BaFe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals. Both the $^{75}$As and $^{31}$P sites exhibit stretched-exponential relaxation similar to the electron-doped systems. By comparing the hyperfine fields and the relaxation rates at these sites we find that the As relaxation cannot be explained solely in terms of magnetic spin fluctuations. We demonstrate that nematic fluctuations couple to the As nuclear quadrupolar moment and can explain the excess relaxation. These results suggest that glassy nematic dynamics are a universal phenomenon in the iron-based superconductors., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

We report detailed Knight shift measurements of the two indium sites in the heavy fermion compound CeIrIn$_5$ as a function of temperature and field orientation. We find that the Knight shift anomaly is orientation-dependent, with a crossover temperature $T^*$ that varies by 50% as the field is rotated from (001) to (100). This result suggests that the hybridization between the Ce 4f states and the itinerant conduction electrons is anisotropic, a result that reflects its collective origin, and may lead to anisotropic Kondo liquid behavior and unconventional superconductivity., Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures

We report Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) data for both the In(1) and In(2) sites in the heavy fermion material CeRhIn$_5$ under hydrostatic pressure. The Knight shift data reveal a suppression of the hyperfine coupling to the In(1) site as a function of pressure, and the electric field gradient, $\nu_{\alpha\alpha}$, at the In(2) site exhibits a change of slope, $d\nu_{\alpha\alpha}/dP$, at $P_{c1} = 1.75$ GPa. We present $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxation rate data in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ and Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ as a function of temperature, doping and magnetic field. The relaxation curves exhibit a broad distribution of relaxation rates, consistent with inhomogeneous glassy behavior up to 100 K. The doping and temperature response of the width of the dynamical heterogeneity is similar to that of the nematic susceptibility measured by elastoresistance measurements. We argue that quenched random fields which couple to the nematic order give rise to a nematic glass that is reflected in the spin dynamics., Comment: Accepted to Physical Review B

We use the two fluid model to determine the conditions under which the nuclear spin-lattice lattice relaxation rate, $T_1$, of candidate heavy quantum critical superconductors can exhibit scaling behavior and find that it can occur if and only if their "hidden" quantum critical spin fluctuations give rise to a temperature-independent intrinsic heavy electron spin-lattice relaxation rate. The resulting scaling of $T_1$ with the strength of the heavy electron component and the coherence temperature, $T^*$, provides a simple test for their presence at pressures at which the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$, is maximum and is proportional to $T^*$. These findings support the previously noted partial scaling of the spin-lattice relaxation rate with $T_c$ in a number of important heavy electron materials and provide additional evidence that in these materials their optimal superconductivity originates in the quantum critical spin fluctuations associated with a nearby phase transition from partially localized to fully itinerant quasiparticles., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

We report $^{209}$Bi nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra of in nanowires and single crystals of Bi$_2$Se$_3$. Crystals were powdered to simulate the random orientation of the nanowires, and the spectra are compared with theoretical expectations derived via an orientational study of a single crystal. The nanowire spectra are consistent with the randomly oriented powders, however we find an unusual suppression of signal intensity as a function of field orientation that may be associated with screening by surface currents., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures, to appear in Phys. In four classes of materials, the layered copper-oxides, organics, iron-pnictides and heavy-fermion compounds, an unconventional superconducting state emerges as a magnetic transition is tuned toward absolute zero temperature, that is, toward a magnetic quantum-critical point (QCP). In most materials, the QCP is accessed by chemical substitutions or applied pressure. CeCoIn5 is one of the few materials that are born as a quantum-critical superconductor and, therefore, offers the opportunity to explore the consequences of chemical disorder. Cadmium-doped crystals of CeCoIn5 are a particularly interesting case where Cd substitution induces long-range magnetic order, as in Zn-doped copper-oxides. Applied pressure globally supresses the Cd-induced magnetic order and restores bulk superconductivity. Here we show, however, that local magnetic correlations, whose spatial extent decreases with applied pressure, persist at the extrapolated QCP. The residual droplets of impurity-induced magnetic moments prevent the reappearance of conventional signatures of quantum criticality, but induce a heterogeneous electronic state. These discoveries show that spin droplets can be a source of electronic heterogeneity in classes of strongly correlated electron systems and emphasize the need for caution when interpreting the effects of tuning a correlated system by chemical substitution., Comment: main text and supplementary information

We report $^{29}$Si NMR measurements in single crystals and aligned powders of URu$_2$Si$_2$ in the hidden order and paramagnetic phases. The spin-lattice-relaxation data reveal evidence of pseudospin fluctuations of U moments in the paramagnetic phase. We find evidence for partial suppression of the density of states below 30 K, and analyze the data in terms of a two component spin-fermion model. We propose that this behavior is a realization of a pseudogap between the hidden order transition $T_{HO}$ and 30 K. This behavior is then compared to other materials that demonstrate precursor fluctuations in a pseudogap regime above a ground state with long-range order., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We present 75As nuclear magnetic resonance data from measurements of a series of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ crystals with $0.00 \leq x \leq 0.075$ that reveals the coexistence of frozen antiferromagnetic domains and superconductivity for $0.060 \leq x \leq 0.071$. Although bulk probes reveal no long range antiferromagnetic order beyond $x = 0.06$, we find that the local spin dynamics reveal no qualitative change across this transition. The characteristic domain sizes vary by more than an order of magnitude, reaching a maximum variation at $x = 0.06$. We report nuclear magnetic resonance data in the bilayer nickelate La3Ni2O6. This material belongs to a family of low valence nickel oxides with square planar coordination of the Ni ions and is isoelectronic to the high temperature superconducting cuprates. Although the three layer nickelate compound exhibits a spin-state transition accompanied by antiferromagnetic order, the bilayer material shows no phase transition. The NMR data in the bilayer La3Ni2O6 reveal the presence of antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations down to 5K that are surprisingly similar to those present in the magnetically ordered trilayer La4Ni3O8, suggesting a similar electronic structure in the paramagnetic phase of both compounds., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, to appear in Phys. We report nuclear magnetic resonance Knight shift data in the heavy fermion material CeIrIn5 at fields up to 30 T. The Knight shift of the In displays a strong anomaly, and we analyze the results using two different interpretations. We find that the Kondo lattice coherence temperature and the effective mass of the heavy electrons remains largely unaffected by the magnetic field, despite the fact that the Zeeman energy is on the order of the coherence temperature., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures; to appear in Phys. We present magnetotransport and Bi-209 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) data on a series of single crystals of Bi2Se3, Bi2Te2Se and Cu_xBi2Se3 with varying carrier concentrations. The Knight shift of the bulk nuclei is strongly correlated with the carrier concentration via a hyperfine coupling of 27 ueV, which may have important consequences for scattering of the protected surface states. Surprisingly we find that the NMR linewidths and the spin lattice relaxation rate appear to be dominated by the presence of localized spins, which may be related to the presence of Se vacancies., Comment: 8 pages, 11 figures; to appear in Phys. The heavy electron Kondo liquid is an emergent state of condensed matter that displays universal behavior independent of material details. Properties of the heavy electron liquid are best probed by NMR Knight shift measurements, which provide a direct measure of the behavior of the heavy electron liquid that emerges below the Kondo lattice coherence temperature as the lattice of local moments hybridizes with the background conduction electrons. Because the transfer of spectral weight between the localized and itinerant electronic degrees of freedom is gradual, the Kondo liquid typically coexists with the local moment component until the material orders at low temperatures. The two-fluid formula captures this behavior in a broad range of materials in the paramagnetic state. In order to investigate two-fluid behavior and the onset and physical origin of different long range ordered ground states in heavy electron materials, we have extended Knight shift measurements to URu$_2$Si$_2$, CeIrIn$_5$ and CeRhIn$_5$. In CeRhIn$_5$ we find that the antiferromagnetic order is preceded by a relocalization of the Kondo liquid, providing independent evidence for a local moment origin of antiferromagnetism. In URu$_2$Si$_2$ the hidden order is shown to emerge directly from the Kondo liquid and so is not associated with local moment physics. Our results imply that the nature of the ground state is strongly coupled with the hybridization in the Kondo lattice in agreement with phase diagram proposed by Yang and Pines., Comment: 9 pages, 13 figures

We report $^{17}$O NMR measurements in single crystals of overdoped Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+\delta}$ with $T_c=82$ K. We measure the full anisotropy of the planar oxygen Knight shift, electric field gradient, and spin lattice relaxation rate tensors, and show that the entire temperature dependence is determined by the suppression of the density of states in the pseudogap below $T^*\sim 94$ K. The linewidth can be explained by a combination of magnetic and quadrupolar broadening as a result of an inhomogeneous distribution of local hole concentrations that is consistent with scanning tunneling microscopy measurements. This distribution is temperature independent, does not break $C_4$ symmetry, and exhibits no change below $T^*$ or $T_c$., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

Resistivity, magnetization and microscopic $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements in the antiferromagnetically ordered state of the iron-based superconductor parent material CaFe$_2$As$_2$ exhibit anomalous features that are consistent with the collective freezing of domain walls. Below $T^*\approx 10$ K, the resistivity exhibits a peak and downturn, the bulk magnetization exhibits a sharp increase, and $^{75}$As NMR measurements reveal the presence of slow fluctuations of the hyperfine field. These features in both the charge and spin response are strongly field dependent, are fully suppressed by $H^*\approx 15$ T, and suggest the presence of filamentary superconductivity nucleated at the antiphase domain walls in this material., Comment: 6pages, 6 figures

Through an analysis and modeling of data from various experimental techniques, we present clear evidence for the presence of a hidden order pseudogap in \U in the temperature range between 25 K and 17.5 K. Considering fluctuations of the hidden order energy gap at the transition as the origin of the pseudogap, we evaluate the effects that gap fluctuations would produce on observables like tunneling conductance, neutron scattering and nuclear resonance, and relate them to the experimental findings. We report $^{75}$As NMR measurements in BaFe$_2$As$_2$ doped with Ni. Like Co, Ni doping suppresses the antiferromagnetic and structural phase transitions and gives rise to superconductivity for sufficiently large Ni doping. The spin lattice relaxation rate diverges at $T_N$, with a critical exponent consistent with 3D ordering of local moments. In the ordered state the spectra quickly broaden inhomogeneously with doping. We extract the average size of the ordered moment as a function of doping, and show that a model in which the order remains commensurate but with local amplitude variations in the vicinity of the dopant fully explains our observations., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We report detailed 17O, 139La, and 63Cu Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance (NQR) measurements in a stripe ordered La1.875Ba0.125CuO4 single crystal and in oriented powder samples of La1.8-xEu0.2SrxCuO4. We observe a partial wipeout of the 17O NMR intensity and a simultaneous drop of the 17O electric field gradient (EFG) at low temperatures where the spin stripe order sets in. In contrast, the 63Cu intensity is completely wiped out at the same temperature. The drop of the 17O quadrupole frequency is compatible with a charge stripe order. The 17O spin lattice relaxation rate shows a peak similar to that of the 139La, which is of magnetic origin. We propose a predictive standard model for heavy electron systems based on a detailed phenomenological two-fluid description of existing experimental data. It leads to a new phase diagram that replaces the Doniach picture, describes the emergent anomalous scaling behavior of the heavy electron (Kondo) liquid measured below the lattice coherence temperature, T*, seen by many different experimental probes, that marks the onset of collective hybridization, and enables one to obtain important information on quantum criticality and the superconducting/antiferromagnetic states at low temperatures. Because T* is ~J^2\rho/2, the nearest neighbor RKKY interaction, a knowledge of the single-ion Kondo coupling, J, to the background conduction electron density of states, \rho, makes it possible to predict Kondo liquid behavior, and to estimate its maximum superconducting transition temperature in both existing and newly discovered heavy electron families., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, submitted to J. We report La-139 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) data in La4Ni3O8 which reveals the presence of antiferromagnetic order below T_N ~ 105 K. This compound contains two-dimensional layers of NiO2 that are isostructural to the copper oxide planes of the high temperature superconductors. This compound is remarkable because the average Ni valence of 1.33+ for formally 2Ni1+ + Ni2+ indicates a 3d9/3d8 electronic configuration. Nickel oxides with Ni1+ valence are rare and unstable, yet may provide new routes to high temperature superconductivity. La4Ni3O8, with antiferromagnetic order of S=1/2 Ni1+ spins, is analogous to the parent compounds of the cuprate superconductors. Our data clearly reveal dramatic spectral changes and low energy antiferromagnetic correlations associated with the onset of long range order below T_N., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

CePt$_2$In$_7$ is a new heavy fermion system with a structure similar to the CeMIn$_5$ system but with greater two-dimensional character. We report the synthesis and characterization of phase pure polycrystalline material, which reveals an antiferromagnetic transition at $T_N = 5.2$ K. $^{235}$U nuclear spin-lattice ($T_1^{-1}$) and spin-spin ($T_2^{-1}$) relaxation rates in the itinerant antiferromagnet USb$_2$ are reported as a function of temperature in zero field. The heating effect from the intense rf pulses that are necessary for the $^{235}$U NMR results in unusual complex thermal recovery of the nuclear magnetization which does not allow measuring $T_1^{-1}$ directly. By implementing an indirect method, however, we successfully extracted $T_1^{-1}$ of the $^{235}$U. We find that the temperature dependence of $T_1^{-1}$ for both $^{235}$U and $^{121}$Sb follows the power law ($\propto T^n$) with the small exponent $n=0.3$ suggesting that the same relaxation mechanism dominates the on-site and the ligand nuclei, but an anomaly at 5 K was observed, possibly due to the change in the transferred hyperfine coupling on the Sb site., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in PRB as a regular article
