Background: Smartphones can emit two types of electromagnetic waves, static field from magnet and dynamic field from calling. Previous evidence showed the interference effects from old generation of mobile phones to cardiac implantable electronic device (CIEDs). The current generation of smartphones and CIEDs are reportedly better designed to reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI). We seek to find the presence and the magnitude of EMI from the current generation of smartphones. Objectives: The primary objective was to find out the presence and the effect of electromagnetic interference from current generation smartphones on cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs). The secondary objectives were to demonstrate safety of using current generation smartphones on cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs). Methods: A total of 80 subjects with CIEDs (Pacemaker, ICD, CRT-D, CRT-P) were recruited from our CIEDs clinic. Each subject was tested with three different smartphones (Nokia 3310, Iphone 7, and Samsung Galaxy S9), resulted in a total of 240 tests. Each phone was placed on chest wall, at pulse generator site, at atrial lead level, and at ventricular lead level. During the tests, real-time interrogations were performed to detect any EMI from smartphones in stand-by mode, and during calling-in and out for 30 seconds. After the tests, post-test interrogation was performed to detect any parameters changes. Adverse events including pacemaker inhibition, false ICD shock, CIEDs device malfunction, and urgent electro- physiologist consultations were recorded. Results: 80 subjects (Mean age 70.5 year-old, 50% male) were recruited in the study, and all completed 240 tests according to our protocol. The most common type of CIEDs tested was pacemaker (N=56, 70%), followed by ICD (N=16, 20%), and CRT (N=8, 10%). Most patients (N=62, 77.5%) had more than one lead implanted. The mean age of CIEDs implantation was 5.2 years (Devices were implanted since 2008-2019). Of all the tests performed, no electromagnetic interference (EMI) or adverse events was observed. Conclusion: Current generation of smartphones have no EMI effect to CIEDs and can be used safely without any adverse events including pacemaker inhibition, false ICD shock and CIEDs malfunction.

The role of sigmoid septum (SS) observed using preprocedural transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) remains unknown. This study aimed to compare clinical outcomes of TAVI using the current-generation transcatheter heart valves in patients with and without SS. We divided 140 consecutive patients, excluding four patients who underwent pacemaker implantation before TAVI, into two groups (those with and without SS) and compared the periprocedural outcomes, including new pacemaker implantation, within 30 days post-TAVI. Thirty-five patients (25%; 32 female patients) had SS before TAVI. INTRODUCTION Late stent thrombosis caused by delayed vascular healing and prolonged local inflammation were major drawbacks of 1st generation drug-eluting stents (DES). Strut design, biocompatibility of polymer, and drug-release profiles were improved in 2nd and 3rd generation DES. Accordingly, the indications for percutaneous coronary intervention with DES have been expanded to more complex patients and lesions. Despite these improvements, significant barriers such as greater flexibility in the duration of dual-antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) as well as reducing long-term stent-related events remain. To achieve ideal short- and long-term results, these existing limitations need to be overcome. AREAS COVERED We will discuss the current limitations of coronary DES and how they might be overcome from pathological and clinical viewpoints. EXPERT OPINION Optimizing DAPT duration after stent implantation and prevention of in-stent neoatherosclerosis are two major issues in current DES. Overcoming these drawbacks is a prerequisite towards achieving better short- and long-term clinical outcomes. New technologies including platform design, polymer types, and anti-proliferative agent itself might lead to further improvements. Although the initial experience with bioresorbable scaffold/stents (BRS) was disappointing, positive results of clinical studies regarding novel BRS are raising expectations. Overall, further device innovation is desired for overcoming the limitations of current DES.

— The use of apps has become increasingly common in higher institutions and often linked with the needs of the current generation. This qualitative study investigates the perception of undergraduate students at a university in Malaysia as part of a need analysis to develop a university orientation app. Fifteen participants were interviewed and the findings suggest that the participants have a positive perception of having the app. The positive perception is mainly based on the needs to navigate around the campus where the apps will help to make the navigation easier and effective by serving as ‘one-stop information center’. In addition to the navigation purpose, the potential users request gamification elements to keep them interested in using the app. This paper concludes that an appealing orientation app for the students should expose them to the university surrounding and at the same time contain gamification elements.

Mechanical complications after transcatheter aortic valve replacement are fortunately rare with the current generation of devices. Unfortunately, life-threatening complications will occur and it is the responsibility of operators to be familiar with strategies to prevent and manage these challenging scenarios. Because these cases will not occur often, it is important for us to highlight and talk about those that do occur, to learn best practices in how to manage and prevent them going forward. We can learn much from each other's good crash landings.

Without hindering the taste, making a cigarette less harmful by reducing the percentage of toxic and carcinogenic compounds in the smoke of the cigarette is a challenging task for the current generation of researchers. In the current work, by implementing mechanical, chemical and combined modification techniques, the above stated is tried to mitigate. In addition to the above, the optimum suction pressure, burning time and the number of puffing are also determined. Mechanical modification technique considers filter to cigarette ratio and filter design as the controlling parameters. The mathematical calculation reveals that puffing should stop when the cigarette length reaches 0.15 times of its original length. Furthermore, it is also identified that the concentrations of suspended solids and droplets in the smoke decrease significantly (separation efficiency = 56.81%) if the cigarette to filter ratio is maintained at 2.32. In case of chemical modification, by using various types of adsorbents such as charcoal and Zeolite 13X, the harmful effects are further reduced. These processes depict significant reduction in harmful effect (separation efficiency up to 62.1%) by showing the decrement in the suspended solids and droplets in the smoke due to the adsorption on the active sites of adsorbents. In case of combined modification, the achieved separation efficiency is 66.51%. For the experimentation, an experimental setup fitted with artificial lungs was used.

Al-Jahiz is an Arabic linguist discussing ancient and modern linguistic theories, but most of the current generation ((Arabic linguists) do not know much about him. This study aimed to examine the concept of Al-Jahiẓ on disabilities of kinetics (Al-harakiyah) and disclosure (Al-Bayaniyah) in using language. The method used was descriptive qualitative which would describe and analyze in depth the concept of Al-Jahiẓ in terms of kinetics and disclosure disabilities. The primary data sources were collected through documentation of Al-Jahiz books and others that discussed his findings. Based on the results, it was concluded that: According to Al-Jahiẓ, disabilities of kinetics (Al-harakiyah) include the presence of several movements made by the speaker during speaking or speech indicating turbulence, instability and composure, such as clearing throat or coughing. While the disabilities of disclosure (Al-Bayaniyah) include Al- ‘Ayyu Al-ḥaṣru, Al-Bik’u, Al-Faḥmu, As-Salāṭotu, Al-Hażru.

Unlike consumer goods industry, a high-tech manufacturer (OEM) often amortizes new product development costs over multiple generations, where demand for each generation is based on advance orders (i.e., known demand) and additional uncertain demand. Also, due to economic regulatory reasons, high-tech OEMs usually source from a single supplier. Relative to the high retail price, the costs for a supplier of producing high-tech components are low. Consequently, incentives are misaligned: the OEM faces relatively high under-stock costs and the supplier faces high over-stock costs. In this paper, we examine supply contracts that are intended to align the incentives between a high-tech OEM and a supplier so that the supplier will invest adequate and yet non-verifiable capacity to meet the OEM’s demand. When focusing on a single generation, the manufacturer can coordinate a decentralized supply chain and extract all surplus by augmenting a traditional wholesale price contract with a “contingent penalty” should the supplier fail to fulfill the OEM’s demand. When the resulting penalty is too high to be enforceable, we consider a new class of “contingent renewal” wholesale price contracts with a stipulation: the OEM will renew the contract with the incumbent supplier for the next generation only when the supplier can fulfill the demand for the current generation. By using non-renewal as an implicit penalty, we show that the contingent renewal contract can coordinate the supply chain. While the OEM can capture the bulk of the supply chain profit, this innovative contract cannot enable the OEM to extract the entire surplus.

Though the partitioning of shortwave radiation (K↓) at the surface into its diffuse (K↓,d) and direct beam (K↓,b) components is relevant for, among other things, the terrestrial energy and carbon budgets, there is a dearth of large-scale comparisons of this partitioning across reanalysis and satellite-derived products. Here we evaluate K↓, K↓,d, and K↓,b, as well as the diffuse fraction (kd) of solar radiation in four current-generation reanalysis (NOAA-CIRES-DOE, NCEP/NCAR, MERRA-2, ERA5) datasets and one satellite-derived product (CERES) using ≈1400 site years of observations. Although the systematic positive biases in K↓ is consistent with previous studies, the biases in gridded K↓,d and K↓,b vary in direction and magnitude, both annually and across seasons. The inter-model variability in cloud cover strongly explains the biases in both K↓,d and K↓,b. Over Europe and China, the long-term (10-year plus) trends in K↓,d in the gridded products are noticeably differ from corresponding observations and the grid-averaged 35-year trends show an order of magnitude variability. In the MERRA-2 reanalysis, which includes both clouds and assimilated aerosols, the reduction in both clouds and aerosols reinforce each other to establish brightening trends over Europe, while the effect of increasing aerosols overwhelm the effect of decreasing cloud cover over China. The inter-model variability in kd seen here (0.27 to 0.50 from CERES to MERRA-2) suggests substantial differences in shortwave parameterization schemes and their inputs in climate models and can contribute to inter-model variability in coupled simulations. Based on these results, we call for systematic evaluations of K↓,d and K↓,b in CMIP6 models.

Technological advances brought changes in several social spheres, including education. The use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in teaching, implies a new way of conceiving or knowledge through resources strongly present in the students' daily lives. Authors such as Cunha (2009), Kenski (2012), Libâneo (2013), Moran (2012), Prensky (2012), Silva (2018), Tajra (2001) and Valente (2005) argue that education should continue as a global evolution and develop new learning tactics respecting the characteristics of each generation. The cell phone is a common ICT for everyone, and the current generation of students, having access to this tool since the early years, has a great command of its functions. Therefore, it becomes feasible to use it as a didactic resource that facilitates learning in the teaching of physics, whether to reproduce, mediate or conclude a certain theme. Based on this assumption, this study brings or reports an experience of applying a didactic proposal, developed with the intention of using or using a cell phone in Physics classes as an auxiliary tool in a 2nd year class of regular high school, belonging to a state school, located in the municipality of Alagoa Nova - PB. An application and a game were used to display the contents related to the study of the Wave. At the end of the proposal application, you can use the same alarm clock of great interest to the students, as it is related to a technological tool with the studied physical content.

The green and cost-effective nature of the microbial desalination cell (MDC) make it a promising alternative for future sustainable desalination. However, MDC suffers from a low desalination rate that inhibits it being commercialized. External resistance (Rext) is one of the factors that significantly affect the desalination rate in MDCs, which is still under debate. This research, for the first time, investigated the impact of Rext on MDCs with different internal resistance (Rint) of the system to discover the optimal range of Rext for efficient MDC performance. The results showed that the effect of Rext on desalination rate (2.52 mg/h) was quite low when the Rint of MDC was high (200 Ω). However, operating the MDC with a low Rint (67 Ω) significantly improved the desalination rate (9.85 mg/h) and current generation. When MDC was operated with a low Rint the effect of variable Rext on desalination and current generation was noticeable. Therefore, low Rint (67 Ω) MDC was used to select the optimum Rext when the optimal range was found to be Rext ≪ Rint, Rext < Rint, Rext ≈ Rint (ranging from 1–69 Ω) to achieve the highest desalination rates (10.41–8.59 mg/h). The results showed the superior effect of Rint on desalination rate before selecting the optimal range of Rext in the outer circuit. HIGHLIGHTS Low desalination rate in MDCs involves both Rext and Rint.; Impact of Rext and Rint was collectively investigated in MDCs.; Effect of Rext was insignificant when internal resistance was high.; Optimum range of Rext was explored for MDC with low Rint.; Rext ≪ Rint, Rext < Rint, Rext ≈ Rint were the optimum Rext for high desalination rate.

Cybersickness (CS) is a term used to refer to symptoms, such as nausea, headache, and dizziness that users experience during or after virtual reality immersion. Initially discovered in flight simulators, commercial virtual reality (VR) head-mounted displays (HMD) of the current generation also seem to cause CS, albeit in a different manner and severity. The goal of this work is to summarize recent literature on CS with modern HMDs, to determine the specificities and profile of immersive VR-caused CS, and to provide an outlook for future research areas. A systematic review was performed on the databases IEEE Xplore, PubMed, ACM, and Scopus from 2013 to 2019 and 49 publications were selected. A summarized text states how different VR HMDs impact CS, how the nature of movement in VR HMDs contributes to CS, and how we can use biosensors to detect CS. The results of the meta-analysis show that although current-generation VR HMDs cause significantly less CS ($$p p < 0.001 ), some symptoms remain as intense. Further results show that the nature of movement and, in particular, sensory mismatch as well as perceived motion have been the leading cause of CS. We suggest an outlook on future research, including the use of galvanic skin response to evaluate CS in combination with the golden standard (Simulator Sickness Questionnaire, SSQ) as well as an update on the subjective evaluation scores of the SSQ.

We've made great progress with the current generation of AI, with learning customer preferences embedded in recommender systems to better customize offerings. This is perfect for the New Distribution Capability that IATA is spearheading for the airline industry. To truly make this work, and not just for airlines but for all travel (hotels, rental cars, attractions, concerts, tours, and more), we need to move on from (a) supervised learning built upon masses of data to systems that learn on the fly with little data, and from (b) centralized (even if in the cloud) machine learning to distributed artificial intelligence, and from (c) recommender systems to marketplace approaches.

Snakebite is a neglected tropical disease that inflicts severe socioeconomic burden on developing countries by primarily affecting their rural agrarian populations. India is a major snakebite hotspot in the world, as it accounts for more than 58,000 annual snakebite mortalities and over three times that number of morbidities. The only available treatment for snakebite is a commercially marketed polyvalent antivenom, which is manufactured exclusively against the 'big four' Indian snakes. In this review, we highlight the influence of ecology and evolution in driving inter- and intra-specific venom variations in snakes. We describe the repercussions of this molecular variation on the effectiveness of the current generation Indian antivenoms in mitigating snakebite pathologies. We highlight the disturbing deficiencies of the conventional animal-derived antivenoms, and review next-generation recombinant antivenoms and other promising therapies for the efficacious treatment of this disease.

The current generation of heart surgeons is experiencing growing consternation with the introduction of the so-called disruptive transcatheter procedures, seemingly threatening the stability and even existence of contemporary cardiovascular surgery. We provide a commentary reporting the comparative outcomes of transcatheter therapies and conventional surgery throughout different scenarios and the evolving superiority of the surgical techniques. The upfront conclusion is that surgeons should strive to keep their surgical skills; the downfall of surgery is not anticipated and as revealed, will hold its ground for the foreseeable future.

It is very demanding to teach anatomy in the present curriculum of medical education. The amount of time allotted to teach and learn human anatomy is diminishing. The traditional teaching method is no longer effective in being able to provide vast amounts of human anatomy learning material. Besides, this method is also passive, which is not liked by the current generation of students. Various disciplines have widely used the learning approach with the blended learning method. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of the blended learning method (BL) with the traditional teaching (TT) method on the student's final grades and the percentage of graduation rates for the gross human anatomy courses. A total of 217 final student grades from Batch 2016 (69 students), Batch 2017 (69 students), and Batch 2018 (79 students) were collected and analyzed. Students in Batch 2018 received the blended learning (BL) method while the Batch 2016 and Batch 2017 received the traditional teaching (TT) method. ResumoA disciplina de Matemática é considerada difícil por muitos alunos, sobretudo para os encaminhados para atendimentos de reforço por apresentarem dificuldades que resultam em seu baixo desempenho. Um recurso atual para aprendizagem matemática está na integração deste conteúdo ao uso de tecnologias digitais, pois, além de promover diferentes possibilidades de aplicação por parte do professor, desperta o interesse dos alunos da geração atual. No entanto, na maioria das escolas que possuem computadores encontram-se professores não preparados para a integração das tecnologias aos processos de ensino e aprendizagem, restringindo-se as atividades à disciplina de Informática. Apoiado na teoria piagetiana sobre a construção do conhecimento, o presente estudo objetivou conhecer as percepções de três professores e sete alunos (5º ano) sobre o uso dos jogos digitais e o ensino colaborativo para aprendizagem matemática. A pesquisa caracterizada como qualitativa ocorreu em quatro etapas: E1 - avaliação diagnóstica; E2 - aplicação de questionário antes da intervenção; E3 - aplicação da proposta (oito seções); e E4 - aplicação de questionário após a intervenção. Os resultados indicaram que tanto professores quanto alunos consideram efetivo o uso de jogos digitais e ensino por colaboração entre as disciplinas. Os alunos enfatizaram a experiência como divertida, diferente e legal. Concluiu-se que propostas colaborativas entre os professores com o uso de tecnologias são relevantes na prática educativa e fundamentais para que o conhecimento seja construído de modo compartilhado na escola. AbstractMathematics is considered to be a difficult subject-matter by many students, mainly for those directed to reinforcement care due to the fact that they present difficulties resulted from their low achievement. A current resource for learning mathematics is the integration of that content with the use of digital technologies, since, besides furthering different application possibilities on the teacher’s part, it arouses the interest of current generation students. However, in most of the schools which have available computers one finds out teachers who are not prepared for the integration of technologies with the processes of teaching and learning, being the activities restricted to the IT subject-matter. Based on Piaget’s theory about the working up of knowledge, this study was carried out to learn about the perception of three teachers and seven students (5th graders) on the use of digital games and the cooperative teaching for the purpose of learning mathematics. The research characterized as a qualitative one was carried out in four phases: E1- diagnostic assessment; E2 application of a questionnaire before the intervention; E3applicationof the proposal (eight sections); and E4 – application of a questionnaire after the intervention. The results showed that both the teachers and the students considered the use of digital games and the cooperation between the subject-matters as an effective tool. The students considered the experience as funny, different and cool. espanolLa generacion de jovenes actuales se ha enfrentado a dos crisis relativamente cercanas, que condicionan sus expectativas de vida y posibilidad de alcanzarlas. La investigacion indaga sobre la evolucion de las representaciones sociales de un mismo grupo de 23 chicas y 10 chicos sobre las crisis economica y sanitaria y sus perspectivas de futuro en dos contextos adversos. En un estudio longitudinal se comparan los resultados obtenidos en 2015 -siete anos despues del estallido de la crisis financiera, cuando se encontraban cursando Bachillerato- con sus representaciones este ano 2020, durante la pandemia, cuando se encuentran realizando estudios superiores o trabajando. Se recoge la informacion a traves de un cuestionario en linea sobre las causas, los responsables, las consecuencias, posibles soluciones y perspectivas de futuro. Los resultados muestran la continuidad de algunas ideas entre ambas crisis, como la escasa confianza en los gobernantes politicos, pero un cambio importante en la autopercepcion sobre sus capacidades. En 2015 su confianza en poder cumplir sus proyectos vitales y laborales era plena, mostrandose muy optimistas y restando cualquier influencia de la crisis en poder culminarlos. Sin embargo, cinco anos despues, adaptan sus planes de futuro a la situacion economica: ahora son mas realistas, otorgando mayor incidencia a la crisis y al desempleo en sus vidas laborales. EnglishThe current generation of young people has faced two relatively close crises, which condition their life expectations and the possibility of reaching them. The research looks into the evolution of the social representations of a same group of 23 girls and 10 boys on the economic and health crisis and their future prospects in two difficult contexts. In a longitudinal study, the results obtained in 2015 -seven years after the outbreak of the financial crisis, when they were in high school- are compared with their representations this year 2020, during the pandemic, when they are pursuing higher education or working. Information is collected through an online questionnaire about the causes, the people responsible, the consequences, possible solutions and future prospects of the crisis. The results show the continuity of some ideas through both crises, such as low confidence in political leaders, but an important change in self-perception of their capabilities. In 2015, their confidence in fulfilling their vital and work projects was full, showing themselves very optimistic and subtracting any influence of the crisis in completing them. However, five years later, they are adapting their future plans to the economic situation, being realistic, giving greater incidence to the crisis and unemployment in their working lives. They recognize the difficulties of the current context, considering more than half of the group parents did.

In the past, people watched a theater called Ludruk on the mobile stage and on television. However, currently Ludruk's art is almost out of date. From this phenomenon, the researchers formulated the problem, namely how the local story artworks of Sawonggaling content can be transformed into a motion comic animated film using a three-act structure. The method of making comic motion animation for the legend of Jaka Berek uses two approaches, namely the method of making animation and the method of making comics. Both of them are done in 3 stages, namely pre-production, production and post-production. The results of the making of this motion comic animation show that the effort to bring back the legendary story that has long been drowned requires some appropriate medias that is easily understood by the current generation. The making of motion comics originating from legendary stories must be based on research and literature studies in order to give the spirit to the artwork that will be produced.

Japanese Americans comprise multiple generations, with a first wave of immigrants entering the United States in the 1800s. The current generation of Japanese American descendants today includes over five generations. The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore the ethnic identity of fourth- and fifth-generation Japanese American adults. Forty participants were interviewed as part of a larger study and deemed exempt by institutional review board. Results indicate that ethnic identity for multigenerational Japanese American adults is complex, with factors that include the impact of historical and intergenerational ties to World War II, continuance of family and cultural traditions, and identity as American but perceived as “forever foreigner.” Family counselor recommendations include considering historical background of Asian American and minority groups, rethinking educational curriculum through transformative social and emotional learning.
