This research investigates the phenomenon of historical discourse in period telenovelas in Chile, exploring how these television productions address contemporary issues. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with screenwriters and script team leaders to understand how the present and contemporary themes are intertwined in period narrative. The results show that period telenovelas do not fictionalize the present through a historical setting, but rather explore the elements that connect the past with the present, highlighting timeless social and political problems that are still current in Chilean society. The analysis of the telenovelas Yo soy Lorenzo, set in the 1960s, and Hijos del Desierto, set in the 1930s, reveals how current themes and historical narrative intertwine to offer a reflection on Chilean society through the lens of the past, helping educate the citizenship in relevant current affairs.

Administrative psychology is a branch of psychological science that studies psychological patterns in managerial work. It is structure, features and uniqueness, ways of using psychological features to solve various management tasks. Every day the leader faces various cases, tasks and problems. It is not difficult to get caught in this spiral, as you know, difficulties often await at the most inopportune moment, and one must constantly be ready to solve them. In this paper, an improved method of solving the studied problems of an organization was discussed through management psychology. It is worth noting that there is absolutely no system in the event and unexpected situations, however, if you set a goal, you can create a mechanism of actions for the case if something goes wrong. Presumably, it means drawing up a work plan, keeping all current affairs in order, so that there are no obstacles that can be foreseen and prevented in an unpleasant situation. The complexity of the manager s work lies in the fact that he must constantly streamline and systematize the moments and actions necessary for the successful operation of the company. The manager understands that every day he has to make many decisions, and they must turn out to be correct. Psychologically it is very difficult.

Since the end of the Cold War, America has generated a dangerous paradox in global affairs. Every president from Bill Clinton to Donald Trump has entered office with little foreign policy experience. Yet these men were instantly granted vast powers, which impacted global events. This thesis addresses how decisions made during a presidential campaign can influence the subsequent administration's foreign policy and thus affect international relations. Specifically, it develops a structured approach using the political and social science research tools described below. George W. Bush's 2000 campaign and foreign policy provide a case study. The second chapter of this thesis uses interviews and earlier biographical, historical, and psychological research to establish a baseline of Bush's pre-campaign background and decisionmaking. Chapter Three mines a new source of internet data and uses content analysis and both qualitative and quantitative methods to distill the campaign's foreign policy. Chapters Four through Six combine interviews with key Bush advisers (including Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Chief of Staff Josh Bolten) with other sources to describe how campaign policies were developed and then used to shape the Bush Administration's actions. Chapter Seven analyzes the administration's final policy results and finds that Bush's 2000 campaign set the course for significant modifications and foreign policy shifts. The thesis concludes that three issue areas are of particular importance: (1) the shaping of a candidate's worldview; (2) the choice of core advisers; and (3) the establishment of policy priorities. Their ramifications included edging America towards conflict with Iraq and facilitating China's rise to global power. Overall, the new analytic framework developed in this thesis can be used to explore the decisionmaking of a range of leaders.

The new prominence of ordinary voice in crime journalism – claims to have seen things, experienced things, felt things 'first-hand' – has the potential to decenter elite perspectives and open up crime news narratives to the voices of systemically criminalized subjects. However, I argue in this paper that the political potential of ordinary voice can only be realized in and through concrete instances of its use, and so needs to be examined within news texts as sites of micro-political struggle over meaning. Looking at Australian current affairs television coverage of so-called 'African gang' crime in Melbourne, this paper approaches crime news texts as sites of vulnerability politics, where different and sometimes competing claims to vulnerability encounter one another and struggle for public recognition. A close multi-modal analysis of three episodes of current affairs television uncovers four specific strategies of textual composition and presentation by which the criminalization of Black African youth is able to persist despite the testimonial interventions of the criminalized: appropriation, marginalization, subjugation and calculation. The paper concludes by considering the implications of this analysis for future studies of ordinary voice and citizen testimony in news reporting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
In the present-day technology-driven world, information reaching at the individual's doorstep sometimes becomes complex, haphazard and difficult to classify to get the insights. The endpoint consumer of the information requires processed information which is contextually suited to their needs, interests and is properly formatted and categorised. Interests and need-based categorization of news and stories would enable the user beforehand to further evaluate information deeply. For instances, the type current affairs related issues and news to read or not to read. This research work proposes an advanced current affairs classification model based on deep learning approaches called Intelligent Current Affairs Classification Using Deep Learning (iCACD). The proposed model is better than already proposed models based on machine learning approached which have been compared on accuracy and performance criteria. The proposed model is better in the following ways. Firstly, It is based on advanced deep neural network architecture. Secondly, the model advances the work to include both headline and body of the information/news articles rather than only processing headlines. Thirdly, A detailed comparative analysis and discussion on accuracy and performance with other machine leaning models have also been presented. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One area where, along with other UK broadcasters, the BBC has been seen to consistently fail to make headway is in its inadequate representation of minority groups within British society. This study fills a gap in the literature understanding black programming on the BBC. It assesses this programming through a qualitative analysis of the views of 94% of those who produced the current affairs programme Black Britain. It reviews some of the material that Black Britain put on air in this assessment, what impact the programme had on broadcasting diversity and why lessons learned were seemingly lost. 15. A virtuous circle: Academic expertise and public philosophy.
- Author

- Abstract
This essay examines the relationship between academic and public philosophy through the lens of Heidegger studies. Specifically, this essay: shows how Heidegger uses technical terminology within the context of the academy to break new philosophical ground; explains how suitably clarified technical terminology can be used to introduce people to Heidegger's philosophy and to apply Heidegger's ideas to current affairs; and illustrates how the application of Heidegger's ideas to contemporary issues results in new forms of academic research. Ultimately, this essay argues that there is a dialectical relationship between academic and public philosophy: i.e., public philosophy translates esoteric ideas developed in the academy into publicly accessible prose and then applies those ideas to daily life; but in doing so, public philosophy inspires new lines of academic inquiry. ISBN 9780007415595 400pp. JOHN HUMPHRYS will be less well known outside the UK than his contemporary from BBC World, John Simpson, but his autobiography is an entertaining and informative recounting of his career and well worth reading. For more than three decades he presided over BBC Radio 4’s flagship early morning current affairs programme, Today. Like Jeremey Paxman on BBC2’s Newsnight, he built a reputation for taking no prisoners in interviews and for having a keen sense of what makes good radio journalism.

Within this study, the authors resolve the issue of the hybridisation of journalistic production in electronic media and specifically in television. Hybridisation has fully expanded into print and online media as well. The authors determine whether this phenomenon is present in television news and to what extent. They see hybridisation as a consequence of multiple factors, including social and political conditions, commercialisation, the market environment, technological developments, topic recycling, and changes in lifestyle and rhythm. All have had an impact on newsroom strategies, working behaviour, methods of journalistic production and changes in perception stereotypes. The decision was made to investigate the phenomenon of hybridisation of news production by monitoring the occurrence of specific elements of analytical and fictional current affairs in news formats, specifically the main news programmes on selected Slovak television stations. The occurrence of these elements is evaluated in the context of genre, topicality and territoriality. The findings are synthesised in connection with presentation in both the public and commercial media space. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article accompanies a 'Dagg-liography' that for the first time records the full scope of John Clarke's comedy output for the New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation (NZBC) in the years 1973–1980, during which time Clarke moved to Australia. The authors outline the aims and purpose of their research and the challenges that had to be overcome in compiling an accurate list of what in some cases was very ephemeral work. Technical characteristics of the items are summarised here but commentary on the nature of Clarke's individual performances is included in the Dagg-liography rather than in the body of this article. - Abstract
This article presents the results of a research project carried out in Benidorm (Alicante, Spain) during the period 2015- 2016. It explores the social representations of young people between 16 and 18 years of age, in the face of the current political and economic situation: the causes, the solutions, and those responsible for the economic crisis. The adolescents that took part in this study are in secondary school, attend the same educational institution and come from similar socio-economic contexts. They were divided into two groups. One of the groups receives Contemporary History classes (Group A) and the other does not (Group B). The data was collected from a questionnaire with questions about the crisis, regarding images from the current socio-economic crisis and commentaries from historical sources about the crises of 1873, 1929 and 2008. The results show that the group that receives History classes is more critical when analyzing the current societal problems, as well as establishing analogies with the past to explain the situations of the present, whereas the other group reproduces the opinions of the media. - Abstract
Rodolfo Stavenhagen’s classic “Seven Erroneous Theses about Latin America” seems not only to have endured but to have gained explanatory power in relation to a variety of topics in Brazil today: the relationship between the middle class (and the elite) and the Southeastern states in the last election, the government’s options vis-à-vis major projects such as Belo Monte, the Workers’ Party advocates’ rhetoric in defense of the growth of the middle class, the disputes over the rights of indigenous peoples, and even the discourse of social movement leaders, co-opted by the Lula administration. In the same way that people can have a political or a personal ideology, their professional identities and how they practise a craft or an occupation may be influenced by what can be labelled as a “professional ideology”. Through conducting interviews with the producers of the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) Afrikaans radio programmesMonitor,SpektrumandNaweek-Aktueel, this article reports on research which showed that there is indeed such a thing as a “journalism ideology”. The interviews focused on how “internal influences” – such as a journalist's background and training, newsroom routines – and “external influences” – such as the audience – influenced the decisions they made in choosing news stories and producing content. This “journalism ideology” influences the producers and in turn the news content of these current affairs programmes that are listened to daily by almost two million listeners. The conclusion drawn from the study is that, although the participants’ “journalism ideology” largely determines the news stories for their programmes, structural forces, newsroom routines and organisational constraints often dictate their actions. Finally, although all the participants saw themselves as “watchdogs of democracy”, internal pressures within the SABC could endanger that role. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Disciplines such as Geography are well placed to respond to the changing needs of society and the effective application of geographical knowledge to real-world problems. This project surveyed first year Geography undergraduates’ understanding of “What is Geography?”, both before and after an exercise in which geographic topics were identified within recent newspapers. The survey instrument employed was an anonymous, self-administered questionnaire, and was undertaken with first-year undergraduate Geography students at a university in South Africa. Results show that the exercise enabled students (n = 158) to more readily see the application of geographical knowledge to both environmental and social problems that they identified in the newspaper stories. Students also identified that studying Geography may be able to help them increase their skills, employment prospects and earning potential. These findings can help locate the disciplinary concerns and applicability of Geography in post-apartheid South Africa within the wider context of the twenty-first Century world. Stahl screened the first part of an ‘experimental’ film, The Reconciliation—a kind of ‘anti-news’—and spoke about his methodology and stylistic approach in achieving something mainstream news, almost by definition, cannot. It tells the deeper story, or the many possible stories according to those actually involved inside the story, of a week in Timor Leste in 1999 prior to its independence from Indonesia. It is challenging. There are no resumés available. It is outside the privileged world of news. Transcript by Hayley Becht. 教育実践報告, This educational practice report discusses the content and learning outcomes of a debate course focussing on current affairs for second year undergraduate English majors at Osaka University. A profile of the learners is presented, after which the course structure and regular class procedures are outlined. This is followed by an analysis of how participation in debates and accompanying activities may help learners to improve their linguistic competence in English, drawing upon concepts from interactionist second language acquisition (SLA) theory. The final section of the paper examines the complex concept of critical thinking and then considers the ways in which participation in debate activities may help learners to develop and consolidate the cognitive skills and approaches associated with this notion.

Stahl screened the first part of an 'experimental' film, The Reconciliation--a kind of 'anti-news'--and spoke about his methodology and stylistic approach in achieving something mainstream news, almost by definition, cannot. It tells the deeper story, or the many possible stories according to those actually involved inside the story, of a week in Timor Leste in 1999 prior to its independence from Indonesia. It is challenging. There are no resumes available. It is outside the privileged world of news. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

35. O ensino de Geografia nos estágios de regência e a leitura/análise de temáticas e questões da atualidade sob a ótica das escalas geográficas.

- Abstract
The teaching of Geography was debated and critically questioned in academic and educational areas of primary schools, especially since the 1990s. In this context, many trainees took over formal teaching apprenticeship at educational units of the elementary and secondary cycles, creating a general expectation of an innovative, critical and current teaching of Geography. Trainees are still perceived as those who bring innovations. In this article, it was sought to provide elements for discussing the teaching of Geography and its role in the analysis of current issues, considering all the complexity involving these issues in a trans-scale and contextualized perspective. In order to achieve the goals, a critical reading of course plans and of class plans of some students at State University of Bahia was done at the end of a semester. Yet as part of the data collection, the research counted on classroom participant observation in Santo Antônio de Jesus, in the Bahia's Reconcavo. The results of these critical appraisals reveal that there is still much teaching development to be achieved in order to approach 'current issues' at a scale and trans-scale dimension in the classroom, so this text has a critical, purposeful and diagnostic essence. Electronic Iran introduces the concept of the Iranian Internet, a framework that captures interlinked, transnational networks of virtual and offline spaces. Taking her cues from early Internet ethnographies that stress the importance of treating the Internet as both a site and product of cultural production, accounts in media studies that highlight the continuities between old and new media, and a range of works that have made critical interventions in the field of Iranian studies, Niki Akhavan traces key developments and confronts conventional wisdom about digital media in general, and contemporary Iranian culture and politics in particular. Akhavan focuses largely on the years between 1998 and 2012 to reveal a diverse and combative virtual landscape where both geographically and ideologically dispersed individuals and groups deployed Internet technologies to variously construct, defend, and challenge narratives of Iranian national identity, society, and politics. While it tempers celebratory claims that have dominated assessments of the Iranian Internet, Electronic Iran is ultimately optimistic in its outlook. As it exposes and assesses overlooked aspects of the Iranian Internet, the book sketches a more complete map of its dynamic landscape, and suggests that the transformative powers of digital media can only be developed and understood if attention is paid to both the specificities of new technologies as well as the local and transnational contexts in which they appear. 38. THE RITUAL OF FACTISM IN REPORTING OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE.
- Subjects
DOMESTIC violence ,RITES & ceremonies ,INTERNATIONAL law ,NATURALIZATION ,EXPATRIATION - Abstract
The article explores the representation of domestic or sexist violence in quality daily newspapers and on news and current affairs programs of Slovenian television. It emphasizes the formal aspects of media representations of violence, particularly generic aspects of chronicles in the daily press and episodic news stories on television. The authors argue that factism as a key strategic ritual of reporting on domestic violence results in the naturalization and individualization of the problem of violence. A characteristic feature of such reporting on television is the episodic account of events in news programs, its standard framing within the framework of political conflict, or the melodramatic representation of violence in current affairs programs, which also contribute to the naturalization, decontextualization and individualization of domestic violence. The latter is thus conventionally interpreted as being outside the structural sources of violence, such as the performance of hegemonic masculinity and class differentiation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents a study on the added value of online feedback features for journalism and democracy. It comes as no surprise that such a trend is a challenge for the traditional news media. Indeed, most of the new citizen communication tools offer their content free of charge, possibly luring audiences away from the professionally crafted content on traditional media websites. For that reason, the latter have started to offer their publics similar tools.

In 2005 and 2007, two high profile crimes were reported in the New Zealand media. The first case invovled the murder of a young Chinese student, Wan Biao, whose dismembered body was discovered in a suitcase. The second case involved domestic violence in which a Chinese man murdered his wife and fled the scene with their young daughter— who the press later dubbed 'Pumpkin' when she was found abandoned in Melbourne, Australia. The authors discuss how news and current affairs programmes decontextualise 'Asian' stories to portray a clear divide between the 'New zealand' public and the separate 'Asian other'. Asians are portrayed as a homogenous group and the media fails to distinguish between Asians as victims of crimes as a separate category to Asians as perpetrators of crimes. This may have consequences for the New Zealand Asian communities and the wider New Zealand society as a whole.

- Abstract
The Middle East is a region of great strategic importance to the rest of the world. Given its geostrategic situation, the Middle East has been a crossroads of historical importance and remains so to this day. In addition to its strategic importance, the cultural magnetism of the Middle East has attracted great extraregional powers to the area for centuries. Today, as in the past, the Middle East plays an important role in eu foreign policy. However, the EU does not have a single and comprehensive approach to conducting its relations with the Middle East. Instead, it has a set of policies intertwined towards specific subregions, countries and problem areas. These include Euro-Mediterranean relations; The Israeli-Palestinian conflict; The EU-GCC dialogue; The Iranian nuclear issue; Relations with Turkey; The war in Syria, among others. This study focuses on EU policy in these areas and issues, which, to date, remain the most topical regional and international policy issues., Oriente Medio es una región de gran importancia estratégica para el resto del mundo.

This is a most important book especially for those concerned about the journalistic mission and its interplay with the effective functioning of democracy. The central question posed by Graeme Turner is whether there is a future for 'serious' current affairs, serious as opposed to the downtown market or tabloid fare which viewers are being treated to on both sides of the Tasman.

At the begining of this century, the Israeli author David Grossman wrote: In the impossible relationships that exist in the Middle east each competing idealology has for years appeared to suffer from almost complete blindnesss to reality's complexity. Each is certain that the other is not telling the truth (Grossman, 2001). One of the hopes attached to Al Jazeera is that it will introduce a level of objective, rational debate to Middle East and help the different sides see more clearly what needs to be done.

This article considers TVNZ's audience discussion programme, State of the Nation, as a moment of public sphere discourse. The programme's pre-broadcast branding and deliberate construction of a bicultural television space is examined, while particular attention is given to the hosts' framing of the discussion and the programme was a questionable public sphere contribution, partly because the structuring of the discussion reinforced the established polarities of the Aotearoa/New Zealand 'race relations' debate, over-privileged producer control at the expense of audience participation and was, more generally, indicative of the limits of TVNZ's post-Charter commitment to public service broadcasting.

COMPARATIVE studies ,FRAMES (Social sciences) ,SOCIAL science methodology - Abstract
Research into China's image in Australia is helpful to promote the mutual understanding and the bilateral relations between the two countries. Informed by national image theory and media framing theory, this study uses content analysis and framing analysis to explore the prestigious current affairs programs: Foreign Correspondent produced by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, and Dateline by Special Broadcasting Service. It examines both the frames and the framing patterns used by the two programs in their coverage of China in the past ten years. The study looks into the structures of theme, syntax, script and rhetoric of the episodes. The results show that both programs represent China negatively in a political sense, but neutrally in economic and environmental terms. However, Foreign Correspondent portrays China favourably regarding the cultural aspect. Framing devices are evident, including presentation format, animal images, ideological words, the public memory of the Cultural Revolution and the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989. The analysis argues that Foreign Correspondent and Dateline serve the mission to build the Australian national identity as well as attempt to present a balanced picture of China, as stronger economic ties are developed and frequent cultural exchanges are encouraged. Framing techniques, however, have been consciously or unconsciously influenced by historical stereotypes and the conventional fear of communism expressed during the past two centuries. POPULARITY ,TELEVISION broadcasting - Abstract
The reputation of British current affairs and documentary series such as the BBC's Panorama, Channel 4's Dispatches or the now defunct Granada series World in Action have rested on an image of conscientious 'public service'. These popular, long running series have, at various points in their history, acted as the 'conscience of the nation', seeking to expose social injustice, investigate misdemeanours by the powerful and take on venal or corrupt vested interest. The BBC's flagship current affairs series Panorama is Britain's longest running television programme and, according to the Panorama website, 'the world's longest running investigative TV show'. It has provided a template for other current affairs series both in Britain, Europe and around the world while undergoing several transformations in form and style since its launch in 1953, the latest and arguably most dramatic being in 2007. This article will chart the development of Panorama as a distinctive, 'flagship' current affairs series over six decades. It will attempt to answer why the Panorama brand has survived so long, while so many other notable current affairs series have not. Using research and material from Bournemouth University's Panorama Archive, the Video Active website, the BFI and other European archives this article explores the development of an iconic current affairs series that has, at different stages in its history, proved a template for other news and current affairs programmes. Various breaks and continuities are highlighted in Panorama's history and identity, and an attempt will be made to characterise and specify the Panorama 'brand' and pinpoint the series' successes and failures in reinventing itself in a rapidly changing media context.
