The enclosed population study evaluated administrator and instructor awareness and performance ratings concerning application of national standards specific to global citizenship curricula as set forth by Curaçao's Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports. Two compelling outcomes were detected; first, teachers and principals reported similar observations relative to (a) awareness and (b) performance on standards; and second, significant statistical differences were detected concerning performance when the data were filtered by public versus private schools. The implication is that Curaçao's primary school system is indeed administering the Ministry's prescribed national standards within their primary schools; however, differential levels of performance are evident between public versus private schools which in turn provides evidence of underlying casual factors. Therefore, an overarching finding is that these disparate results between public and private schools relative to performance on global citizenship curricula portends pending social inequities in student knowledge and awareness of global citizenship principles.

Purpose: This research aims to identify the most suitable intergenerational learning strategies for the private higher education institutions, using the analytic network process. Design/methodology/approach: In order to achieve this goal, two private higher education institutions from Curacao and Spain are analyzed. Data are collected based on a systematic literature review and Delphi studies and processed using the analytic network process. Findings: The results show that teachers also learn at the workplace not only through the formal educational system but also through volunteering activities, mixed-aged teams, and mentoring, which are the most appropriate strategies for fostering intergenerational learning in the private higher education institutions. Besides, their selection is strongly influenced by institution's structural capital (namely, institutional policy, organizational culture, organizational memory) and by employees' psychological profile (such as interpersonal trust, knowledge self-efficiency, motivation). Originality/value: This research helps the policymakers to prepare for the upcoming aging society by providing them with a viable tool for selecting the most suitable IGL strategy. Furthermore, it supports strategic thinking and scenario development by emphasizing how the situation could change if the importance of the individual and organizational factors varies.

The yellow-shouldered Amazon (Amazona barbadensis) has been the object of a decentralized research and conservation program throughout its range, spanning mainland Venezuela, the Venezuelan islands of La Blanquilla and Margarita, and Aruba, Curaçao and Bonaire in the southern Caribbean. Multiple interventions have been implemented since the 1980s, primarily on the islands of Bonaire and Margarita, including nest protection, the provision of artificial nests, predator control, health monitoring, ecosystem restoration, community education and awareness. As a result, fledgling recruitment in these two locations has increased and populations have grown substantially. In this article, we summarize the interventions and their impact on population abundance and poaching of nestlings. The status of populations in the Venezuelan mainland continues to be uncertain – yellow-shouldered Amazons were observed recently in their historical distribution, but poaching is still widespread. A 2024 reintroduction in Aruba was the first step toward reestablishment of parrots in the island after being extirpated around 1950. Building on four decades of experience and work, a multi-stakeholder range-wide action plan produced with the vision that by 2031 Amazona barbadensis has functional, viable wild populations throughout its historical range. Semi-submersible platforms are used in the offshore oil and gas industry. They are specialised marine vessels that float on submersed drafts, which are composed of pontoons and columns and can serve as habitats for biofouling marine benthic communities. When these vessels sail from one place to another, either by using their own propellers or being towed, they can act as vectors for introducing non-native marine species. To establish themselves in new areas, these exotic species require suitable benthic habitats. Artificial substrates, such as harbour infrastructure where such vessels are moored, appear to be highly suitable for this purpose. In the present study, a mooring buoy and a harbour piling at Curaçao (southern Caribbean), frequently used by semi-submersible platforms, were found to be colonised by the sun corals Tubastraea coccinea and T. tagusensis at shallow depths. This report presents the first record of T. tagusensis as an introduced non-native species in the southern Caribbean, highlighting the potential role of harbour infrastructure in facilitating coral settlement at depths shallower than those typically observed. These findings underscore the ecological impact of artificial substrates in supporting invasive species and emphasise the need for monitoring programs and defouling facilities. Shape analysis of a large sample of the thecideid brachiopod Thecidellina from the Pliocene and Pleistocene rocks on the Caribbean island of Curaçao highlights asymmetry within the population. However, the 30 analysed specimens display a lack of a consistent asymmetry. The brachiopods were cemented to substrates by a cicatrix, accommodated by a change in shell structure. The plastic morphology of Thecidellina may have been due to overcrowding and competition for resources on limited substrates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article discusses the interactions among three nonindigenous coral species in a tropical marine fouling community. The study focuses on the Tubastraea species, which are invasive corals originally from the tropical Indo-Pacific. The researchers found that these invasive corals can coexist and interact with each other without causing harm. They also observed fusion between colonies of different Tubastraea species, creating chimeric colonies. While Atlantic skippers were vital to seventeenth-century Dutch imperial expansion, few histories address the roles of skippers in colonial ventures. Drawing on archival records in Amsterdam and New York, this study examines the activities of skippers along roughly 200 voyages between Amsterdam and New Netherland from 1639 to 1664. In Amsterdam, skippers in relationships with voyage outfitters functioned as trusted partners who offered continuity for operations. As principals at sea, skippers navigated hazards and managed contingencies during inherently risky transatlantic passages. In the colony, skippers collaborated with local merchants to facilitate trade, and with colonial authorities to provide maritime support. With an impact on every stage of the endeavour, skippers were key players in the colonial complex, which depended on them for its functioning. Beyond New Netherland, these findings have applications for evaluating other European colonial undertakings, and for understanding the wider mechanisms of imperial expansion into the Atlantic. Two new species of deepwater cardinalfish, Epigonus gemma [7 specimens, 37.7–76.7 mm in standard length (SL)] and Epigonus hexacanthus (22 specimens, 32.2–57.0 mm SL) are described based on specimens from deep reefs off Curaçao, southern Caribbean Sea. Epigonus gemma is distinguished from other congeners by a combination of the following characters: dorsal-fin rays VII-I, 9–10; pectoral-fin rays 16; total gill rakers 25–27; vertebrae 10 + 15; pyloric caeca 8–9; pored lateral-line scales 43–44 + 5–6; opercular spine absent; maxillary mustache-like processes absent; ribs on last abdominal vertebra absent; tongue toothless; endopterygoid teeth absent; and enlarged conical teeth on symphysis of lower jaw present. Epigonus hexacanthus is distinguished from other congeners by a combination of the following characters: dorsal-fin rays VI-I, 10; pectoral-fin rays 16–17; total gill rakers 25–27; vertebrae 10 + 15; pyloric caeca 6–7; pored lateral-line scales 32–35 + 3–5; opercular spine absent; maxillary mustache-like processes absent; ribs on last abdominal vertebra absent; lingual teeth present; endopterygoid teeth present; and enlarged conical teeth on symphysis of lower jaw absent. Eight specimens (37.6–54.4 mm SL) of E. hexacanthus are female with mature gonads, rendering the species the smallest in size at sexual maturity among its congeners. Between 1837–1863, the government on the Dutch colony of Curacao registered the escape attempts from all enslaved persons on the island. By combining the structured information of the 'register of runaway slaves' with other sources, it becomes clear that running away during slavery was a multi-faceted phenomenon. The 1,613 registered escape attempts included not only escapees, trying to flee the island, but also a majority of truants who fled temporarily but stayed on the island. Escapees were mostly young men, who normally worked in groups and had to prepare their attempts well, in order to have a chance to escape the island. An analysis of the profiles of truants show that they were a wide range of persons, from pregnant women to elderly people, fleeing alone or in groups. All these people not only needed an opportunity to flee, but also a place to go to. Together, they created a 'maroon landscape', a mental map of opportunities available to enslaved people. Their mental landscape did include locations, people and circumstances on Curacao, but also the sea surrounding it. Moreover, seasonal effects like harvest time and changes abroad altered the 'maroon landscape' continuously and lead to an adjustment of behavior, which is most obvious after the abolition of slavery in nearby Venezuela in 1854. Examining demographic patterns of enslaved populations can shed light on living conditions of people living in slavery. During the 19th century, enslaved populations in Latin America and the Caribbean were characterized by an excess of deaths, indicating the harsh living conditions they were forced to live in. The island of Curaçao — at that time a Dutch colony — however, has formed an exception to this trend, as the enslaved population was characterized by natural increase. Today, newly crowdsourced data of the slave registers of Curaçao enables the examination of the entire enslaved population, which facilitates the study of (changes in) the demographic development on the island. This paper aims to gain insight into patterns of mortality between 1839 and 1863 in order to shed light on the determinants of the exceptional demographic development of the enslaved population of Curaçao. This research examines the mortality rates of the population and explores possible determinants — seasonality, sex and age — of this unique mortality pattern (n = 12,793). Previous research stressed the importance of the fertility pattern of Curaçao as the determinant in the natural increase of the population, however, the results showed that mortality might have played a more decisive role. The relatively low mortality rates allowed fertility rates to exceed, and so, this positive difference between birth and death resulted in a unique pattern of natural increase of an enslaved population in the Caribbean.

Mesophotic reefs, located in the "Twilight Zone" of the ocean, are coral reefs that exist in relatively deep waters ranging from approximately 30 to 150 m below the surface. These reefs are situated just beyond the reach of conventional SCUBA diving and are typically explored using advanced diving techniques or with the aid of submersibles. In the present study, we used a state-of-the-art submersible to sample 26 sponge specimens belonging to 11 species. High (HMA) or low (LMA) microbial abundance status was assigned to species based on TEM imagery. Prokaryotic communities associated with these sponges were, furthermore, assessed using high-throughput sequencing. Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, Actinobacteriota, and Acidobacteriota were the most abundant phyla overall. HMA/LMA status proved to be a highly significant predictor of prokaryotic composition. HMA sponges also tended to be more diverse in terms of richness and evenness than LMA sponges. 14 predictor-classes were identified using an exploratory technique based on machine learning including classes within the phyla Chloroflexi (e.g., Dehalococcoidia and JG30-KF-CM66) and Acidobacteriota (Thermoanaerobaculia and Subgroups 11 and 21). Previous studies have demonstrated the prevalence of the HMA/LMA dichotomy in shallow waters and, recently, the deep sea. Our results demonstrate its prevalence in the mesophotic realm. Nieuw Wetboek van Strafvordering Curaçao: gemoderniseerd of nog ruimte voor verbetering? Bij de Staten van Curaçao is in behandeling het nieuwe Wetboek van Strafvordering. Het huidige Wetboek van Strafvordering dateert van 1997. Ontwikkelingen op het gebied van de rechten van de verdachte, de emancipatie van het slachtoffer in het strafrecht, nieuwe vormen van criminaliteit en technologische ontwikkelingen maken dat het huidige wetboek sterk toe is aan modernisering. Op deze onderwerpen is het nieuwe Wetboek van Strafvordering sterk gemoderniseerd ten opzichte van het huidige Wetboek van Strafvordering. Op andere onderwerpen valt nog een slag te maken. Major and trace element abundances, including highly siderophile elements, and 187Os and 182W isotopic compositions were determined for ca. 89 Ma mafic and ultramafic rocks from the islands of Gorgona (Colombia) and Curaçao (Dutch Caribbean). The volcanic systems of both islands were likely associated with a mantle plume that generated the Caribbean Large Igneous Provence. The major and lithophile trace element characteristics of the rocks examined are consistent with the results of prior studies, and indicate derivation from both a chemically highly-depleted mantle component, and an enriched, or less highly-depleted mantle component. Highly siderophile element abundances for these rocks are generally similar to rocks with comparable MgO globally, indicating that the major source components were not substantially enriched or depleted in these elements. Rhenium-Os isotopic systematics of most rocks of both islands indicate derivation from a mantle source with an initial 187Os/188Os ratio between that of the contemporaneous average depleted mid-ocean ridge mantle and bulk silicate Earth. The composition may reflect either an average lower mantle signature, or global-scale Os isotopic heterogeneity in the upper mantle. Some of the basalts, as well as two of the komatiites, are characterized by calculated initial 187Os/188Os ratios 10–15 % higher than the chondritic reference. These more radiogenic Os isotopic compositions do not correlate with major or trace element systematics, and indicate a mantle source component that was most likely produced by either sulfide metasomatism or ancient Re/Os fractionation. Tungsten-182 isotopic compositions measured for rocks from both islands are characterized by variable μ182W values ranging from modern bulk silicate Earth-like to strongly negative values. The μ182W values do not correlate with major/trace element abundances or initial 187Os/188Os compositions. As with some modern ocean island basalt systems, however, the lowest μ182W value (−53) measured, for a Gorgona olivine gabbro, corresponds with the highest 3He/4He previously measured from the suite (15.8 R/R A). Given the lack of correlation with other chemical/isotopic compositions, the mantle component characterized by negative μ182W and possibly high 3He/4He is most parsimoniously explained to have formed as a result of isotopic equilibration between the mantle and core at the core-mantle boundary. In the 1820s and 1830s, two debates about free ports took place in the United Kingdom of the Netherlands. One debate concerned domestic fiscal policy and the regulation of foreign trade. In this debate the legacies of the political economic thought of Gijsbert Karel van Hogendorp and the mid eighteenth-century debate on turning the Dutch Republic into a limited free port were played out. The first Dutch debate on free ports was a response to changing conditions in global trade and a further attempt to regain the old staple market and connect it to an industrialising national economy. The other debate concerned the establishment of the Dutch Trade Company (Nederlandse Handels Maatschappij) and the declaration of a series of overseas free ports in the years after the British seizure of Singapore and its ratification in 1824. This second debate concerned the modernisation of colonial trade to halt the expansion of British commercial settlements in and around the Dutch East Indies as well as in the Caribbean. Together these debates represented the national challenge to put the entire Dutch economy on a new foundation and reflected differing constitutional perspectives that had pitted liberals against patriots since the late eighteenth century. Objective. This study aimed to describe and critically evaluate the COVID-19 vaccination program for high-risk children in Curacao and provide information about important factors such as parents’ vaccination hesitancy and effective strategies for communicating and delivering information about vaccination. Methods. This was a cross-sectional study. It was important to identify children aged 12–17 years who were at high risk of severe COVID-19 infection because of the limited medical facilities on the island; children considered to be at high risk were those with diseases such as obesity, hypertension or diabetes mellitus type 2. These children or their caregivers were invited by their pediatricians to be vaccinated as part of a program run by the Public Health Department of Curacao. These high-risk patients were vaccinated between 30 May 2021 and 25 February 2022 in designated child-friendly spaces, with a pediatrician present for guidance and reassurance. Children received the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine at the recommended dose for their age. The primary outcome was a description and evaluation of the attendance for vaccination. The secondary outcomes were side effects after vaccination for the age groups 12–15 years and 16–17 years. Reasons for refusal or nonadherence were also registered. Results. Altogether 51% (24/47) of those aged 16–17 years who were invited were vaccinated compared with 42% (26/69) of those aged 12–15 years who were invited. Altogether, 46% of these high-risk children were vaccinated compared with 48% of children aged 12–17 years without risk factors. In our population, most patients did not experience any side effects and if they did, the side effects were mild. No cases of myocarditis or pericarditis were observed. A lack of trust in the vaccine and a lack of prioritization of vaccination when scheduling daily activities were important factors in refusal and nonadherence. Conclusions. To organize a successful vaccination program in a small community with limited resources for treating high-risk children it is crucial for medical professionals to provide reliable information. Public health initiatives should focus on assuaging parents’ fears about vaccines. In addition, ensuring there is good cooperation between doctors and the Public Health Department can help to make implementation successful. Finally, involving pediatricians and using dedicated areas for vaccinating children can help build trust with parents and caregivers.
