Next-generation wireless systems, already widely deployed, are expected to become even more prevalent in the future, representing challenges in both environmental and economic terms. This paper focuses on improving the energy efficiency of intelligent and programmable Open Radio Access Network (RAN) systems through the near-real-time dynamic activation and deactivation of Base Station (BS) Radio Frequency (RF) frontends using Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) algorithms, i.e., Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO) and Deep Q-Network (DQN). These algorithms run on the RAN Intelligent Controllers (RICs), part of the Open RAN architecture, and are designed to make optimal network-level decisions based on historical data without compromising stability and performance. We leverage a rich set of Key Performance Measurements (KPMs), serving as state for the DRL, to create a comprehensive representation of the RAN, alongside a set of actions that correspond to some control exercised on the RF frontend. We extend ns-O-RAN, an open-source, realistic simulator for 5G and Open RAN built on ns-3, to conduct an extensive data collection campaign. This enables us to train the agents offline with over 300,000 data points and subsequently evaluate the performance of the trained models. Results show that DRL agents improve energy efficiency by adapting to network conditions while minimally impacting the user experience. Additionally, we explore the trade-off between throughput and energy consumption offered by different DRL agent designs.

In this paper, the redshift evolution of the galactic bar properties, like the bar length, pattern speed, and bar fraction, has been investigated for simulated galaxies at stellar masses $M_*>10^{10}\, M_{\odot}$ in the cosmological magnetohydrodynamical simulation TNG50. We focus on the redshift evolution of the bar pattern speeds and \textit{the fast bar tension}. We show that the median value of the pattern speed of the bars increases as the redshift grows. On the other hand, although the median value of the bar length increases over time, the ratio between the corotation radius and the bar radius, namely the $\mathcal{R}=R_{\text{CR}}/R_{\text{bar}}$ parameter, increases as well. In other words, the corotation radius increases with a higher rate compared to the bar length. This directly means that galactic bars slow down with time, or equivalently as the redshift declines. We discuss the possible mechanisms that reduce the pattern speeds in TNG50. We demonstrate that while mergers can have a significant impact on a galaxy's pattern speed, they do not play a crucial role in the overall evolution of mean pattern speed within the redshift range $z\leq 1.0$. Furthermore, we show that the $\mathcal{R}$ parameter does not correlate with the gas fraction. Consequently, the existence of gas in TNG50 does not alleviate the fast bar tension. We show that the mean value of the pattern speed, computed for all the galaxies irrespective of their mass, at $z=1.0$ is $\Omega_p=70.98\pm 2.34$ km s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}$ and reduces to $\Omega_p=33.65 \pm 1.07$ km s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}$ at $z=0.0$. Reliably executing quantum algorithms on noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices is challenging, as they are severely constrained and prone to errors. Efficient quantum circuit compilation techniques are therefore crucial for overcoming their limitations and dealing with their high error rates. These techniques consider the quantum hardware restrictions, such as the limited qubit connectivity, and perform some transformations to the original circuit that can be executed on a given quantum processor. Certain compilation methods use error information based on calibration data to further improve the success probability or the fidelity of the circuit to be run. However, it is uncertain to what extent incorporating calibration information in the compilation process can enhance the circuit performance. For instance, considering the most recent error data provided by vendors after calibrating the processor might not be functional enough as quantum systems are subject to drift, making the latest calibration data obsolete within minutes. In this paper, we explore how different usage of calibration data impacts the circuit fidelity, by using several compilation techniques and quantum processors (IBM Perth and Brisbane). To this aim, we implemented a framework that incorporates some of the state-of-the-art noise-aware and non-noise-aware compilation techniques and allows the user to perform fair comparisons under similar processor conditions. Our experiments yield valuable insights into the effects of noise-aware methodologies and the employment of calibration data. The main finding is that pre-processing historical calibration data can improve fidelity when real-time calibration data is not available due to factors such as cloud service latency and waiting queues between compilation and execution on the quantum backend., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures

Ion trap technologies have earned significant attention as potential candidates for quantum information processing due to their long decoherence times and precise manipulation of individual qubits, distinguishing them from other candidates in the field of quantum technologies. However, scalability remains a challenge, as introducing additional qubits into a trap increases noise and heating effects, consequently decreasing operational fidelity. Trapped-ion Quantum Charge-Coupled Device (QCCD) architectures have addressed this limitation by interconnecting multiple traps and employing ion shuttling mechanisms to transfer ions among traps. This new architectural design requires the development of novel compilation techniques for quantum algorithms, which efficiently allocate and route qubits, and schedule operations. The aim of a compiler is to minimize ion movements and, therefore, reduce the execution time of the circuit to achieve a higher fidelity. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for initial qubit placement, demonstrating enhancements of up to 50\% compared to prior methods. Furthermore, we conduct a scalability analysis on two distinct QCCD topologies: a 1D-linear array and a ring structure. Additionally, we evaluate the impact of the excess capacity -- i.e. the number of free spaces within a trap -- on the algorithm performance.

The presence of dark gaps, a preferential light deficit along the bar minor axis, is observationally well known. The properties of dark gaps are thought to be associated with the properties of bars, and their spatial locations are often associated with bar resonances. However, a systematic study, testing the robustness and universality of these assumptions, is still largely missing. Here, we investigate the formation and evolution of bar-induced dark gaps using a suite of N-body models of (kinematically cold) thin and (kinematically hot) thick discs with varying thick disc mass fraction, and different thin-to-thick disc geometry. We find that dark gaps are a natural consequence of the trapping of disc stars by the bar. The properties of dark gaps (such as strength and extent) are well correlated with the properties of bars. For stronger dark gaps, the fractional mass loss along the bar minor axis can reach up to ~60-80 percent of the initial mass contained, which is redistributed within the bar. These trends hold true irrespective of the mass fraction in the thick disc and the assumed disc geometry. In all our models harbouring slow bars, none of the resonances (corotation, Inner Lindblad resonance, and 4:1 ultra-harmonic resonance) associated with the bar correspond to the location of dark gaps, thereby suggesting that the location of dark gaps is not a universal proxy for these bar resonances, in contrast with earlier studies., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures, 1 table (including appendix), accepted for publication in MNRAS

Using the large-charge expansion, we prove a necessary condition for a CFT to exhibit conformal symmetry breaking, under the assumption that a continuous global symmetry is ${\it also}$ broken on the moduli space: there must be a tower of charged local operators whose scaling dimensions are asymptotically linear in the charge. In supersymmetric theories with a continuous R-symmetry and a holomorphic moduli space, the existence of such a tower of operators follows trivially from a BPS condition: their scaling dimensions are then exactly linear in the R-charge. We illustrate the more general statement in several examples of three-dimensional ${\cal N}=1$ CFTs, where the leading linear behavior receives nontrivial corrections. By considering a suitable scaling limit, we also relate the spectrum of states with large charge on the cylinder (isomorphic to local operators) to the spectrum of massive particles on the moduli space.

In CFTs, the partition function of a line defect with a cusp depends logarithmically on the size of the line with an angle-dependent coefficient: the cusp anomalous dimension. In the first part of this work, we study the general properties of the cusp anomalous dimension. We relate the small cusp angle limit to the effective field theory of defect fusion, making predictions for the first couple of terms in the expansion. Using a concavity property of the cusp anomalous dimension we argue that the Casimir energy between a line defect and its orientation reversal is always negative ("opposites attract"). We use these results to determine the fusion algebra of Wilson lines in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM as well as pinning field defects in the Wilson-Fisher fixed points. In the second part of the paper we obtain nonperturbative numerical results for the cusp anomalous dimension of pinning field defects in the Ising model in $d=3$, using the recently developed fuzzy-sphere regularization. We also compute the pinning field cusp anomalous dimension in the $O(N)$ model at one-loop in the $\varepsilon$-expansion. Conformal field theories that exhibit spontaneous breaking of conformal symmetry (a moduli space of vacua) must satisfy a set of bootstrap constraints, involving the usual data (scaling dimensions and OPE coefficients) as well as new data such as the spectrum of asymptotic states in the broken vacuum and form factors. The simplest bootstrap equation arises by expanding a two-point function of local operators in two channels, at short distance using the OPE and at large distance using the EFT in the broken vacuum. We illustrate this equation in what is arguably the simplest perturbative model that exhibits conformal symmetry breaking, namely the real $ABC$ model in $d = 4 -\epsilon$ dimensions. This paper presents a comprehensive framework designed to facilitate the widespread deployment of the Internet of Things (IoT) for enhanced monitoring and optimization of Water Distribution Systems (WDSs). The framework aims to investigate the utilization of massive IoT in monitoring and optimizing WDSs, with a particular focus on leakage detection, energy consumption and wireless network performance assessment in real-world water networks. The framework integrates simulation environments at both the application level (using EPANET) and the radio level (using NS-3) within the LoRaWAN network. Dwarf barred galaxies are the perfect candidates for hosting slowly-rotating bars. They are common in dense environments and they have a relatively shallow potential well, making them prone to heating by interactions. When an interaction induces bar formation, the bar should rotate slowly. They reside in massive and centrally-concentrated dark matter halos, which slow down the bar rotation through dynamical friction. While predictions suggest that slow bars should be common, measurements of bar pattern speed, using the Tremaine-Weinberg method, show that bars are mostly fast in the local Universe. We present a photometric and kinematic characterisation of bars hosted by two dwarf galaxies in the Virgo Cluster, NGC 4483 and NGC 4516. We derive the bar length and strength using the Next Generation Virgo Survey imaging and the circular velocity, bar pattern speed, and rotation rate using spectroscopy from the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer. Including the previously studied galaxy IC 3167, we compare the bar properties of the three dwarf galaxies with those of their massive counterparts from literature. Bars in the dwarf galaxies are shorter and weaker, and rotate slightly slower with respect to those in massive galaxies. This could be due to a different bar formation mechanism and/or to a large dark matter fraction in the centre of dwarf galaxies. We discuss rapidly rotating states of a superfluid. We concentrate on the Giant-Vortex (GV) state, which is a coherent rotating solution with a macroscopic hole at the center. We show that, for any trap, the fluctuations obey an approximately chiral dispersion relation, describing arbitrary shape deformations moving with the speed of the ambient superfluid. This dispersion relation is a consequence of a peculiar infinite symmetry group that emerges at large angular velocity and implies an infinite ground-state degeneracy. In recent years, Scientific Machine Learning (SciML) methods for solving partial differential equations (PDEs) have gained increasing popularity. Within such a paradigm, Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) are novel deep learning frameworks for solving initial-boundary value problems involving nonlinear PDEs. Recently, PINNs have shown promising results in several application fields. Motivated by applications to gas filtration problems, here we present and evaluate a PINN-based approach to predict solutions to strongly degenerate parabolic problems with asymptotic structure of Laplacian type. To the best of our knowledge, this is one of the first papers demonstrating the efficacy of the PINN framework for solving such kind of problems. In particular, we estimate an appropriate approximation error for some test problems whose analytical solutions are fortunately known. We study the rich dynamics resulting from introducing static charged particles (Wilson lines) in 2+1 and 3+1 dimensional gauge theories. Depending on the charges of the external particles, there may be multiple defect fixed points with interesting renormalization group flows connecting them, or an exponentially large screening cloud can develop (defining a new emergent length scale), screening the bare charge entirely or partially. We investigate several examples where the dynamics can be solved in various weak coupling or double scaling limits. Sometimes even the elementary Wilson lines, corresponding to the lowest nontrivial charge, are screened. We consider Wilson lines in 3+1 dimensional gauge theories including massless scalar and fermionic QED$_4$, and also in the ${\mathcal N}=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. We also consider Wilson lines in 2+1 dimensional conformal gauge theories such as QED$_3$ with bosons or fermions, Chern-Simons-Matter theories, and the effective theory of graphene. Our results in 2+1 dimensions have potential implications for graphene, second-order superconducting phase transitions, etc. Finally, we comment on magnetic line operators in 3+1 dimensions ('t Hooft lines) and argue that our results for the infrared dynamics of electric and magnetic lines are consistent with non-Abelian electric-magnetic duality., Comment: 119 pages, 17 figures

Barred structures are widespread in a considerable fraction of galactic discs, spanning diverse environments and galaxy luminosities. The environment likely exerts a significant influence on bar formation. It is plausible that the structural parameters of bars resulting from tidal interactions in high-density galactic environments differ from those formed through internal disc instabilities in isolated galaxies. To empirically test this scenario, a viable approach is to compare the structural parameters of bars in galaxies situated within distinct environments. We have collected data on the bar radius and bar strength for a sample of 36 SB0 and SBa galaxies located within the Virgo cluster. Additionally, we analyzed a sample of 46 field galaxies with similar morphologies and luminosity range. The analysis reveals that the bar radius exhibits a correlation with galaxy luminosity, indicating that larger bars are typically found in more luminous galaxies. When comparing galaxies with fixed luminosities, the field galaxies display larger bar radii compared to those in the Virgo cluster. However, when the bar radius is scaled by the size of the galaxy, the disparity diminishes and the scaled bars in the Virgo cluster and the field exhibit similar sizes. This is because galaxies of similar luminosities tend to be larger in the field environment compared to the cluster and because the bars adapt to the discs in which they live. Regarding the bar strength, no significant differences were observed for bright galaxies ($M_{r} < -19.5$) between those located in the Virgo cluster and those in the field. Research involving at-risk users -- that is, users who are more likely to experience a digital attack or to be disproportionately affected when harm from such an attack occurs -- can pose significant safety challenges to both users and researchers. Nevertheless, pursuing research in computer security and privacy is crucial to understanding how to meet the digital-safety needs of at-risk users and to design safer technology for all. To standardize and bolster safer research involving such users, we offer an analysis of 196 academic works to elicit 14 research risks and 36 safety practices used by a growing community of researchers. We pair this inconsistent set of reported safety practices with oral histories from 12 domain experts to contribute scaffolded and consolidated pragmatic guidance that researchers can use to plan, execute, and share safer digital-safety research involving at-risk users. Integrating workloads with differing criticality levels presents a formidable challenge in achieving the stringent spatial and temporal isolation requirements imposed by safety-critical standards such as ISO26262. The shift towards high-performance multicore platforms has been posing increasing issues to the so-called mixed-criticality systems (MCS) due to the reciprocal interference created by consolidated subsystems vying for access to shared (microarchitectural) resources (e.g., caches, bus interconnect, memory controller). The research community has acknowledged all these challenges. Thus, several techniques, such as cache partitioning and memory throttling, have been proposed to mitigate such interference; however, these techniques have some drawbacks and limitations that impact performance, memory footprint, and availability. In this work, we look from a different perspective. Departing from the observation that safety-critical workloads are typically event- and thus interrupt-driven, we mask "colored" interrupts based on the \ac{QoS} assessment, providing fine-grain control to mitigate interference on critical workloads without entirely suspending non-critical workloads. We propose the so-called IRQ coloring technique. We implement and evaluate the IRQ Coloring on a reference high-performance multicore platform, i.e., Xilinx ZCU102. Results demonstrate negligible performance overhead, i.e., <1% for a 100 microseconds period, and reasonable throughput guarantees for medium-critical workloads. This thesis treats networks providing quantum computation based on distributed paradigms. Compared to architectures relying on one processor, a network promises to be more scalable and less fault-prone. Developing a distributed system able to provide practical quantum computation comes with many challenges, each of which need to be faced with careful analysis in order to create a massive integration of several components properly engineered. In accordance with hardware technologies, currently under construction around the globe, telegates represent the fundamental inter-processor operations. Each telegate consists of several tasks: i) entanglement generation and distribution, ii) local operations, and iii) classical communications. Entanglement generation and distribution is an expensive resource, as it is time-consuming. The main contribution of this thesis is on the definition of compilers that minimize the impact of telegates on the overall fidelity. Specifically, we give rigorous formulations of the subject problem, allowing us to identify the inter-dependence between computation and communication. With the support of some of the best tools for reasoning -- i.e. network optimization, circuit manipulation, group theory and ZX-calculus -- we found new perspectives on the way a distributed quantum computing system should evolve., Comment: PhD Thesis

The complexity of automotive systems is increasing quickly due to the integration of novel functionalities such as assisted or autonomous driving. However, increasing complexity poses considerable challenges to the automotive supply chain since the continuous addition of new hardware and network cabling is not considered tenable. The availability of modern heterogeneous multi-processor chips represents a unique opportunity to reduce vehicle costs by integrating multiple functionalities into fewer Electronic Control Units (ECUs). In addition, the recent improvements in open-hardware technology allow to further reduce costs by avoiding lock-in solutions. This paper presents a mixed-criticality multi-OS architecture for automotive ECUs based on open hardware and open-source technologies. Safety-critical functionalities are executed by an AUTOSAR OS running on a RISC-V processor, while the Linux OS executes more advanced functionalities on a multi-core ARM CPU. Coleman's theorem states that continuous internal symmetries cannot be spontaneously broken in two-dimensional quantum field theories (QFTs). In this work we consider surface (i.e. two-dimensional) defects in $d$-dimensional conformal field theories (CFTs) invariant under a continuous internal symmetry group $G$. We study under which conditions it is possible for a surface defect to break spontaneously a continuous internal symmetry. We find that spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) is impossible under reasonable assumptions on the defect Renormalization Group (RG) flow. Counterexamples are possible only for exotic RG flows, that do not terminate at a fixed-point. We discuss an example of this kind. We also illustrate our no-go result with an effective field theory analysis of generic defect RG flows. We find a generic weakly coupled defect universality class (with no SSB), where correlation functions decay logarithmically. O-RAN is radically shifting how cellular networks are designed, deployed and optimized through network programmability, disaggregation, and virtualization. Specifically, RAN Intelligent Controllers (RICs) can orchestrate and optimize the Radio Access Network (RAN) operations, allowing fine-grained control over the network. RICs provide new approaches and solutions for classical use cases such as on-demand traffic steering, anomaly detection, and Quality of Service (QoS) management, with an optimization that can target single User Equipments (UEs), slices, cells, or entire base stations. While this comes with the potential to enable intelligent, programmable RANs, there are still significant challenges to be faced, primarily related to data collection at scale, development and testing of custom control logic for the RICs, and availability of Open RAN simulation and experimental tools for the research and development communities. To address this, we introduce ns-O-RAN, a software integration between a real-world near-real-time RIC and an ns-3 simulated RAN which provides a platform for researchers and telco operators to build, test and integrate xApps. ns-O-RAN extends a popular Open RAN experimental framework (OpenRAN Gym) with simulation capabilities that enable the generation of realistic datasets without the need for experimental infrastructure. We implement it as a new open-source ns-3 module that uses the E2 interface to connect different simulated 5G base stations with the RIC, enabling the exchange of E2 messages and RAN KPMs to be consumed by standard xApps. Furthermore, we test ns-O-RAN with the OSC and OpenRAN Gym RICs, simplifying the onboarding from a test environment to production with real telecom hardware controlled without major reconfigurations required. ns-O-RAN is open source and publicly available, together with quick-start tutorials and documentation., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 1 table, 5 listings.
