While basaltic volcanism is dominant during rifting and continental breakup, felsic magmatism may be a significant component of some rift margins. During International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 396 on the continental margin of Norway, a graphite-garnet-cordierite bearing dacitic unit (the Mimir dacite) was recovered in two holes within early Eocene sediments on Mimir High (Site U1570), a marginal high on the Vøring Transform Margin. Here, we present a comprehensive textural, petrological, and geochemical study of the Mimir dacite in order to assess its origin and discuss the geodynamic implications. The major mineral phases (garnet, cordierite, quartz, plagioclase, alkali feldspar) are hosted in a fresh rhyolitic, vesicular, glassy matrix that is locally mingled with sediments. The major element chemistry of garnet and cordierite, the presence of zircon inclusions with inherited cores, and thermobarometric calculations all support an upper crustal metapelitic origin. While most magma-rich margin models favor crustal anatexis in the lower crust, thermobarometric calculations performed here show that the Mimir dacite was produced at upper-crustal depths (<5 kbar, 18 km depth) and high temperature (750–800°C) with up to 3 wt% water content. In situ U-Pb analyses on zircon inclusions give a magmatic crystallization age of 54.6 ± 1.1 Ma, consistent with emplacement that post-dates the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum. Our results suggest that the opening of the Northeast Atlantic was associated with a phase of low-pressure, high-temperature crustal anatexis preceding the main phase of magmatism.

Laser-driven dynamic compression experiments of plastic materials have found surprisingly fast formation of nanodiamonds (ND) via X-ray probing. This mechanism is relevant for planetary models, but could also open efficient synthesis routes for tailored NDs. We investigate the release mechanics of compressed NDs by molecular dynamics simulation of the isotropic expansion of finite size diamond from different P-T states. Analysing the structural integrity along different release paths via molecular dynamic simulations, we found substantial disintegration rates upon shock release, increasing with the on-Hugnoiot shock temperature. We also find that recrystallization can occur after the expansion and hence during the release, depending on subsequent cooling mechanisms. Our study suggests higher ND recovery rates from off-Hugoniot states, e.g., via double-shocks, due to faster cooling. Laser-driven shock compression experiments of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) samples with in situ X-ray probing at the simulated conditions found diamond signal that persists up to 11 ns after breakout. In the diffraction pattern, we observed peak shifts, which we attribute to thermal expansion of the NDs and thus a total release of pressure, which indicates the stability of the released NDs.

BACKGROUND: Point-of-care hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA testing can facilitate single-visit diagnosis and treatment. This study evaluated a single-visit test and treat intervention integrating point-of-care HCV RNA testing, linkage to nursing care, and peer-supported engagement/delivery of treatment among people with recent injecting drug use at a peer-led needle and syringe program (NSP). METHODS: TEMPO Pilot is an interventional cohort study of people with recent injecting drug use (previous month) recruited between September 2019-February 2021 from one peer-led NSP in Sydney, Australia. Participants received point-of-care HCV RNA testing (Xpert HCV Viral Load Fingerstick), linkage to nursing care, and peer-supported engagement/delivery of treatment. The primary endpoint was the proportion initiating HCV therapy. RESULTS: Among 101 people with recent injecting drug use (median age 43; 31% female), 27% (n = 27) were HCV RNA detectable. Treatment uptake was 74% (20 of 27; sofosbuvir/velpatasvir, n = 8; glecaprevir/pibrentasvir, n = 12). Among people initiating treatment (n = 20), 45% (n = 9) initiated treatment at the same visit, 50% (n = 10) in the next 1-2 days, and 5% on day 7 (n = 1). Two participants initiated treatment outside the study (overall treatment uptake 81%). Reasons for not initiating treatment included loss to follow-up (n = 2), no reimbursement (n = 1), not suitable for treatment (mental health) (n = 1), and inability to perform liver disease assessment (n = 1). In the full analysis set, 60% (12 of 20) completed treatment and 40% (8 of 20) had a sustained virological response (SVR). In the evaluable population (excluding people without an SVR test), SVR was 89% (8 of 9). CONCLUSION: Point-of-care HCV RNA testing, linkage to nursing, and peer-supported engagement/delivery led to high HCV treatment uptake (majority single-visit) among people with recent injecting drug use attending a peer-led NSP. We investigated the longitudinal associations between physical activity (PA), lumbar multifidus morphology, and impactful low back pain (LBP) in young people. Nine-year-old children were recruited from 25 primary schools and followed up at age 13, 16, and 21 years. We measured PA with accelerometers at age 9, 13, and 16; quantified patterns of lumbar multifidus intramuscular adipose tissue (IMAT) change from 13 to 16 years using magnetic resonance imaging; and recorded LBP and its impact with standardised questionnaires and interviews. Associations were examined with crude and adjusted logistic or multinomial models and reported with odds ratios (OR) or relative risk ratios (RRR). We included data from 364 children (mean[SD] age = 9.7[.4] years). PA behaviour was not associated with LBP. Having persistently high IMAT levels at age 13 and 16 was associated with greater odds of LBP (OR[95% CI] = 2.98[1.17 to 7.58]). Increased time in moderate and vigorous intensity PA was associated with a lower risk of higher IMAT patterns (RRR[95% CI] = .67[.46 to .96] to .74[.55 to 1.00]). All associations became non-significant after adjusting for sex and body mass index (BMI). Future studies investigating the relationships between PA behaviour, lumbar multifidus IMAT, and impactful LBP should account for potential confounding by sex and BMI.

The report was commissioned by the Victorian Government so they could develop their Building Equality strategy. This strategy was to be a research led strategy and will be announced later in 2022. This report has took a holistic approach to understanding women’s experiences in construction by beginning in early adolescence when forming vocational interests and concluding in late career. the comprehensive literature review identified career barriers and enablers by career stages. It then reviewed nearly 400 national and international programs aimed at increasing the number of women into non traditional careers and assisting in their retention. The programs were thematically analysed by career stage. 6 exemplar programs were selected and analysed using program theory. Finally, CEOs,/Directors of construction companies were interviewed and focus groups held with women and women's organizations to discuss career barriers. This comprehensive report investigated past literature, current best practice and local barriers to provide a framework for a new government strategy.
