Measurements of the marine carbonate system on tropical and subtropical continental margins are poorly distributed in space and time, with many uncertainties persisting regarding the role of carbon exchanges at the ocean-atmosphere interface in these areas. To calculate sea-to-air CO 2 fluxes in Marine Ecoregions along the Brazilian continental margin (4°N to 34°S), we used data from the Surface Ocean CO 2 Atlas (SOCAT v2020), collected up to 400 km from the coast, at the surface (5 m), between 1991 and 2018, with the aim of investigating the role of ecoregions as potential sinks or sources of atmospheric CO 2. The temperature and salinity of seawater presented variability in the north-south direction mainly because of the broad latitudinal range, reflecting typical patterns of tropical (T = 27.4°C ±1.49; S = 36.4 ±1.91) and subtropical waters (T = 22.8°C ±3.41; S = 35 ±2.91), in addition to the greater or lesser influence of river inputs in each ecoregion. The pCO 2 values in the surface waters varied from 121.81 (Amazon) to 478.92 μatm (Eastern), differing significantly between ecoregions and showing an expected decadal increasing trend, both in the atmosphere and in the seawater. The calculated values of CO 2 fluxes showed non-homogeneous spatio-temporal variations, from -24.37 mmol m-2 d-1 (Rio Grande) to 9.87 mmol m- 2 d-1 (Southeastern). Throughout the analyzed time series, we observed that the Northeast, Amazon and Eastern ecoregions acted predominantly as sources of CO 2 and the Southeastern ecoregions and, mainly, Rio Grande, acted predominantly as sinks of atmospheric CO 2.

This study aims to reconstruct the surface marine carbonate system from 1998 to 2018 using sea surface temperature (SST) and sea surface salinity (SSS) data from the PIRATA buoy at 8°N 38°W and describe its variability in time. Two empirical models were used to calculate total alkalinity (TA) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) from SSS. From these two parameters, as well as SSS and SST data, calculate pH, in total scale, and CO2 fugacity (fCO2) values were then estimated. Only DIC, pH and fCO2 showed a statistically significant trend in time, where DIC showed an increase of 0.717 ± 0,108 μmol kg-1 year-1, pH decreased .0014 ± 0,0001 pH units year-1, and fCO2 had an increase of 1.539 ± 0,028 μatm year-1. Two different seasons were observed when data were analyzed: a dry season from January to June, when SSTs were lower (27.00 ± .61°C) and SSS was higher (35.94 ± 0.34), matching the period when the ITCZ is over the South American continent, Amazon river plume is restricted to western shelf areas and Equatorial upwelling is less intense, and a rainy season from July to December, when SSTs were higher (28.35 ± 0.7°C) and SSS was lower (35.01 ± 0.8), matching the period when the ITCZ is at its northern range, the Amazon plume is spread eastwards through the North Brazil Current’s retroflection and the Equatorial upwelling is more active. Along with that, TA, DIC and pH varied positively with SSS, with higher values (TA: 2352.88 ± 19.74μmol kg-1; DIC: 2013.82 ± 18.6μmol kg-1; pH: 8.0604 ± 0.0121) during dry season and lower values (TA: 2299.3 ± 46.32μmol kg-1; DIC: 1967.61 ± 40.0μmol kg-1; pH: 8.0485 ± 0.0119) during rainy season. On the other hand, fCO2 varied positively with SST, with higher values (391.13 ± 13.76μatm) during rainy, upwelling season and lower values (385.85 ± 12.86μatm) during dry season, showing that both SSS and SST variability play an important role in the CO2 solubility in the region. Besides seasonality, the El Niño Southern Oscilation probably played an important role on the carbonate system’s variability, as variations in this study with Fourier period from 1.4 to 4.7 years matched with observed impacts of the El Niño at the tropical Atlantic and the Amazon basin. O Atlântico Tropical Oeste é uma importante região oceânica quanto à dinâmica do CO2 por apresentar a entrada de grandes volumes de água doce. Este estudo reconstruiu o sistema carbonato marinho superficial de 1998 a 2018 usando dados de temperatura na superfície do mar (SST) e salinidade na superfície do mar (SSS) da boia PIRATA a 8°N 38°W, assim como descrever sua variabilidade ao longo do tempo. Dois modelos empíricos foram usados para calcular a alcalinidade total (TA) e o carbono inorgânico dissolvido (DIC) a partir da SSS. Partindo destes dois parâmetros, além dos dados de SSS e SST, foi possível calcular também os valores de pH, em escala total, e fugacidade de CO2 (fCO2). Apenas DIC, pH e fCO2 mostraram uma tendência estatisticamente significativa no tempo, onde DIC apresentou aumento de 0,717 ± 0,108 μmol kg-1 ano-1, pH diminuiu 0,0014 ± 0,0001 unidades de pH ano- 1 e fCO2 teve aumento de 1,539 ± 0,028 μatm ano-1. Duas estações diferentes foram observadas: uma estação seca de janeiro a junho, com valores mais baixos de SST (de 26,6 a 27,7°C) e valores estáveis de SSS em torno de 36, período em que a ITCZ está sobre o continente sul- americano, a pluma do rio Amazonas seguindo para oeste e a ressurgência equatorial é menos ativa, e uma estação chuvosa de julho a dezembro, com valores maiores de SST (de 27,4 a 29°C) e a SSS apresentou maior variabilidade (de 34,3 a 35,7), período em que a ITCZ está mais ao norte, a pluma do rio Amazonas segue para leste e a ressurgência equatorial é mais ativa. Junto com isso, TA, DIC e pH variaram positivamente com SSS, com valores mais elevados (TA média de 2350 μmol kg-1, DIC médio de 2025 μmol kg-1 e pH médio de 8,060) durante a estação seca e valores mais baixos (TA em torno de 2300 μmol kg-1, DIC em torno de 1990 μmol kg-1 e pH em torno de 8,050) durante a estação chuvosa. Por outro lado, fCO2 variou positivamente com SST, com valores mais elevados (em torno da média de 390 μatm) durante a estação chuvosa, marcada pela ressurgência mais intensa, e valores mais baixos (cerca de 385 μatm) durante a estação seca, mostrando que tanto a variação na SSS quanto na SST desempenha um papel importante na solubilidade do CO2 na região. Além da sazonalidade, o El Niño-Oscilação Sul provavelmente desempenhou um papel importante na variabilidade do sistema carbonato, uma vez que as variações com período maior que 1 ano coincidiram com impactos observados no Atlântico tropical e na bacia amazônica relacionados ao fenômeno El Niño.

We collected full-depth water samples from 18 oceanographic stations along the 38°W transect, from 02°S to 15°N during the PIRATA-BR XVII and XVIII cruises, in November 2017 and 2018. In this region, the surface and subsurface circulation in the Atlantic Ocean displays complex seasonal patterns, under influence of the Intertropical Convergence Zone. The water samples were collected from Niskin bottles closed in ten different depths, stored frozen, and later analyzed through spectrophotometry. Besides that, the CTD-O2 data provided continuous salinity, temperature, and dissolved oxygen measurements, used to identify the water masses according to their thermohaline indexes. The same biogeochemical parameters from GLODAPv.2 database, sampled between 1990 and 2010 along the 35°W, from 03°S and 10°N, were also used to characterize the water masses. Six water masses were identified in the region based on their neutral density limits: Tropical Surface Water (TSW, γn < 24.448 kg m-3); South and North Atlantic Central Water (SACW and NACW, γn 24.448 – 26.815 kg m-3); Antarctic Intermediate Water (AAIW, γn 26.815 – 27.7153 kg m-3); North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW, γn 27.7153 – 28.135 kg m-3); and Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW, γn > 28.135 kg m-3). All water masses had very low nitrite concentration. TSW corresponds to an oligotrophic water that has low concentrations of other nutrients, and high oxygen concentration (~ 200 μmol/kg) due to gas exchange with the atmosphere; NACW and SACW have low nutrient concentration, acting as transition regions between TSW and AAIW; AAIW showed the highest concentration of phosphate (~ 1.35 μmol/kg) and nitrate (~ 30 μmol/kg) and low dissolved O2 concentration (~ 130 μmol/kg); NADW had the highest O2 concentration mean (~ 250 μmol/kg), and intermediate concentrations of other nutrients; AABW, on the other hand, was the water mass with the highest silicate concentration (~ 80 μmol/kg), as well as a high O2 (~ 240 μmol/kg), nitrate (~ 25 μmol/kg) and phosphate (~ 1.80 μmol/kg) concentrations. Finally, it was possible to verify that some water bodies have one or more nutrients and biogeochemical parameters that have specific concentrations, helping in their identification and characterization, such as the high nitrate and phosphate in AAIW, and high silicate in AABW, compared to central and surface water masses. Neste estudo foram caracterizadas as propriedades químicas das massas de água no oceano Atlântico Tropical Oeste, de acordo com sua concentração de oxigênio e nutrientes inorgânicos dissolvidos: nitrato, nitrito, fosfato e silicato. Foram coletadas amostras de água em um total de 18 estações oceanográficas ao longo do transecto 38°W, de 02°S a 15°N, durante os cruzeiros PIRATA-BR XVII e XVIII, em novembro de 2017 e 2018. Nesta região, a circulação superficial e de subsuperfície no oceano Atlântico apresenta padrões sazonais complexos, sob influência da Zona de Convergência Intertropical (ZCIT). As amostras de água foram coletadas em garrafas Niskin fechadas em dez profundidades diferentes, armazenadas, congeladas e posteriormente analisadas por espectrofotometria. Além disso, dados do CTD-O2 forneceram medidas contínuas de salinidade, temperatura e oxigênio dissolvido, utilizadas para identificar as massas de água de acordo com seus índices termohalinos. Para auxiliar na caracterização, foram também analisados dados dos mesmos parâmetros biogeoquímicos referentes à base de dados GLODAPv.2, coletados entre 1990 e 2010 ao longo do transecto 35° W, entre as latitudes 03°S e 10°N. Seis massas de água foram identificadas na região com base em seus limites de densidade neutra: Água Tropical Superficial (AT, γn < 24,448 kg m-3); Águas Centrais do Atlântico Sul e do Atlântico Norte (ACAS e ACAN, γn 24,448 - 26,815 kg m-3); Água Intermediária Antártica (AIA, γn 26,815 - 27,7153 kg m-3); Água Profunda do Atlântico Norte (APAN, γn 27,7153 - 28,135 kg m-3); e Água de Fundo Antártica (AFA, γn > 28,135 kg m-3). Todas as massas d’água apresentaram baixíssima concentração de nitrito. A AT corresponde a uma água oligotrófica que apresenta baixas concentrações dos outros nutrientes, e alta concentração de oxigênio (~ 200 μmol/kg) devido às trocas gasosas com a atmosfera; as Águas Centrais ACAN e ACAS apresentam baixa concentração de nutrientes, atuando como regiões de transição entre a AT e a AIA; a AIA apresentou a maior concentração de fosfato (~ 1,35 μmol/kg) e de nitrato (~ 30 μmol/kg), e baixa concentração de O2 (~ 130 μmol/kg) dissolvido; a APAN apresentou a maior média de concentração de O2 (~ 250 μmol/kg), e concentrações intermediárias dos outros nutrientes; já a AFA foi a massa de água que apresentou a maior concentração de silicato (~ 80 μmol/kg), bem como uma elevada concentração de O2 (~ 240 μmol/kg), nitrato (~ 25 μmol/kg) e fosfato (~ 1,80 μmol/kg). Por fim, foi possível verificar que algumas massas de água possuem um ou mais nutrientes e parâmetros biogeoquímicos que apresentam concentrações específicas, auxiliando na sua identificação e caracterização. Como a alta concentração de nitrato e fosfato na AIA, e a alta concentração de silicato na AFA, comparado com as massas de água centrais e superficial.

However, the role of DOC in the global carbon cycle is not fully understood. This study analyzed the distribution of DOC in the water column of the Bransfield Strait, Northern Antarctic Peninsula, in February 2015 and 2016. Data were collected during two summer oceanographic cruises of the NAUTILUS project conducted by the Brazilian High Latitude Oceanography Group. The DOC samples were determined using the “non-purgable organic carbon” method and the results were correlated with hydrographic data such as temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen. Concentrations of DOC ranged from 40.70 to 122.82 μmol kg−1 in 2015 and from 33.12 to 112.20 μmol kg−1 in 2016. The analyzes showed that the vertical distribution of DOC in the Bransfield Strait can be controlled by a combination of vertical stratification of the water column, vertical export of organic matter and biological activity in the upper mixing layer during the summer. The significant interannual differences observed between DOC concentrations and most of the physicochemical parameters can be related to the El Niño - South Oscillation (ENSO) and Southern Annular Mode (SAM) climate modes. The highest concentrations of DOC, observed in February 2015, were associated with a layer of warm and stratified surface water. The ENSO and SAM climate modes showed positive and weak intensity in 2015, favoring water intrusions from the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. In contrast, the February 2016 campaign was characterized by positive ENSO and SAM events of record intensity. The intensification of the Weddell Gyre induced by these climatic modes, promoted the advection of cold waters, more oxygenated and recently formed from the shelf to the Bransfield Strait, which may have contributed to the lower concentrations of DOC in the water column. This study contributes to a better understanding of the role of DOC in the global carbon cycle in a region of complex circulation and oceanic mix and sensitive to global climate change O reservatório marinho de carbono orgânico dissolvido (COD) é equivalente ao reservatório de carbono atmosférico e representa o maior estoque reduzido de carbono no oceano. No entanto, o papel do COD no ciclo global do carbono não é totalmente compreendido. Este estudo analisou a distribuição de COD na coluna de água do estreito de Bransfield, Norte da Península Antártica, em fevereiro de 2015 e 2016. Os dados foram coletados durante dois cruzeiros oceanográficos de verão do projeto NAUTILUS conduzidos pelo Grupo Brasileiro de Oceanografia de Altas Latitudes. As amostras de COD foram determinadas através do método “carbono orgânico não purgável” e os resultados foram correlacionados com dados hidrográficos como, temperatura, salinidade e oxigênio dissolvido. As concentrações de COD variaram de 40,70 a 122,82 μmol kg−1 em 2015 e 33,12 a 112,20 μmol kg−1 em 2016. As análises mostraram que a distribuição vertical de COD no estreito de Bransfield pode ser controlada por uma combinação de estratificação vertical da coluna de água, exportação vertical de matéria orgânica e atividade biológica na camada superior de mistura, durante o verão. As diferenças interanuais significativas observadas entre as concentrações de COD e a maioria dos parâmetros físico-químicos podem estar relacionadas aos modos climáticos El Niño - Oscilação Sul (ENSO) e Southern Annular Mode (SAM). As maiores concentrações de COD, observadas em fevereiro de 2015, foram associadas à uma camada de água superficial quente e estratificada. Os modos climáticos ENSO e SAM apresentaram intensidade positiva e fraca em 2015, favorecendo intrusões de águas oriundas da Corrente Circumpolar Antártica. Em contraste, a campanha de fevereiro de 2016 foi caracterizada por eventos de ENSO e SAM positivos e de intensidade recorde. A intensificação do Giro de Weddell induzida por esses modos climáticos, promoveu a advecção de águas frias, mais oxigenadas e recentemente formadas da plataforma para o estreito de Bransfield, o que pode ter contribuído para as menores concentrações de COD na coluna de água. The higher concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere causes greater amounts of CO2 to dissolve in the ocean, altering the chemistry on the sea surface and causing negative impacts to the marine ecosystem. One of the consequences is the reduction of the pH in seawater, causing acidification. Despite the scientific advances, there is much to be researched about the behavior of the chemical properties that control the CO2 changes between the ocean and the atmosphere correlating the surface parameters AT, salinity and temperature of the sea.With this perspective, the main purpose of this study is to determine a a relationship between these three parameters, and build a model for reconstruction studies of the marine carbonate system on a temporal scale along the Brazilian South and Southeastern margin. In October 2014, during an oceanographic campaign, it was observed that AT varied according to the salinity, and was influenced by plume of the Patos Lagoon and Plata River where there was observed lower salinity and lower AT. The Salinity-AT relationships found with this dataset were tested, and can be used regionally to predict surface AT as a function of salinity, and thus providing another means of analysis as global changes in the marine carbonate system. Desde a era Industrial até hoje, as emissões antropogênicas de CO2 para a atmosfera aumentaram a concentração deste gás em quase 40%. Com o aumento do CO2 na atmosfera, quantidades crescentes desse gás se dissolvem no oceano, alterando a química na superfície da água do mar e causando impactos negativos para o ecossistema marinho. Uma das consequências é a redução do pH do meio marinho, já que a água se torna mais ácida ocasionando a acidificação. Apesar dos avanços científicos, ainda há muito a ser pesquisado sobre o comportamento das propriedades químicas que controlam as trocas de CO2 entre o oceano e a atmosfera correlacionando os parâmetros AT, salinidade e temperatura da superfície do mar.Com essa perspectiva o presente trabalho tem por finalidade principal determinar uma relação entre esses três parâmetros a fim de estabelecer um modelo para estudos de reconstrução de parâmetros do sistema carbonato marinho em escala temporal na costa sul e sudeste brasileira (oceano Atlântico Sul) por onde percorre a Corrente do Brasil, com ênfase no estudo dos aspectos relacionados à acidificação dos oceanos.Em outubro de 2014 a campanha oceanográfica EstArte-Sul foi realizada a bordo do navio Cruzeiro do Sul com 47 estações ao longo da área de estudo. Observou-se que a AT variou de acordo com a salinidade e houve influência da pluma da Lagoa dos Patos e no Rio da Prata na região sul durante o período de amostragem, onde na última estação houve a menor salinidade e menor AT.Assim, as relações foram criadase pode-se concluir que os modelos das relações Salinidade-AT é mais robusta e precisa que a relação Temperatura-AT. Este trabalho demonstra como as equações de AT em função da salinidadee da temperatura fornecem outro meio de examinar as mudanças globais no sistema de carbonato marinho.
