For many pumping stations that draw water from sediment-laden rivers, the flow patterns in their intake structure are disordered due to sediment deposition, which seriously threatens the safe operation of projects. In order to accurately construct the complex and refined three-dimensional (3D) geometric model of the intake structure, and further explore the hydraulic characteristics of the water-sediment two-phase flow inside, this paper proposes a reverse modeling method and carries out numerical simulation. A typical forward intake structure in the arid region of Northwest China is selected as the research object. According to the point cloud data of the intake structure obtained by the 3D laser scanner, the curved surface models are rebuilt and imported into ICEM-CFD for improvement, thereby obtaining the 3D computational domain model of the actual intake structure; after lossless docking with FLUENT, the hydraulic characteristics are analyzed by applying the Realizable k-ε turbulence model coupled with the Mixture multiphase flow model considering interphase slip; finally, the reliability of the simulation is verified by in-situ flow measurements. Results demonstrate that the method can precisely reflect the actual geometric boundary and siltation of intake structure, and the numerical model can accurately identify the two-phase flow; the siltation improves the local flow field structure of the forebay to some extent, but cause the loss of the overall hydraulic performance of the intake structure. This study can provide a scientific reference for the geometric model construction and hydraulic analysis of intake structures with complex boundary and sediment deposition.

In conventional research, the suspended sediment distribution in a channel under the action of floating canopy has been rarely studied. In this study, experiments on sediment transport in flume with fixed suspended vegetation were carried out under different velocity conditions. It was performed to examine the suspended sediment transport and distribution law as impacted by the floating canopy. Inadequate hydrodynamics can cause deterioration of the water environment within rivers. Regulating water conservancy projects can effectively improve the state of the water environment of rivers and promote sustainable regional development. The river plain in Zhejiang Province, China, suffers from severe hydrodynamic deficiencies, which have a significant impact on the state of the regional water environment. To investigate the changing state of the water environment of the river plain under water conservancy project control, in this study we constructed a two-dimensional hydrodynamic–water quality model based on the AD and ECOLAB modules in MIKE 21 software 2014 Edition. Combined with conservative tracers, the changes in the water displacement rate, flow rate, and water environment quality of the river plain were simulated under different regulation schemes over 7 days. A quantitative analysis of the effects of improving the state of the water environment in the river plain was carried out using a cluster analysis and a cloud model. (1) The water replacement rate of the outer river reached 90% after 3 days and approached 100% after 7 days. The water replacement rates of the inner pond were 51.2, 49.6, and 55.8%. This indicated that the engineering control measures effectively improved the replacement capacity of the river. (2) The contents of DO and BOD5 in the river have increased from class V to above class 3. The overall water quality is in the range of classes 2 to 3, and in some parts it can reach class 1. This indicates that the regulatory plan played a certain role in improving the river water environment. (3) The water pollution in the study area showed a fluctuating and decreasing trend over 7 days. There was a positive correlation between the flow velocity, water replacement rate, DO, and BOD5.

The evolution of water and land resource carrying capacity significantly impacts optimal water and land resource allocation and regional sustainable development in arid regions. This study proposes a model that combines cellular automaton (CA) and Markov; this model aids in predicting spatial changes in water and land resource availability. In this study, taking the Jingdian Irrigation District in China’s northwest arid region as an example, we used long-series monitoring data and a Landsat dataset to create a raster-weighted fusion of 18 indicators and quantitatively analyzed the carrying status of water and land resources from 1994 to 2018. The CA–Markov model was used to simulate the carrying status of water and land resources in 2018 and to perform accuracy correction. The validated CA–Markov model was used to predict water and land resource carrying status in 2026 and 2034. The results show (1) from 1994 to 2018, the area of “good carrying” zone increased by 10.42%, the area of “safe carrying” zone increased by 7%, and spatially rose in an arc from the town to the surrounding regions. The area of “critical carrying” zone remains almost unchanged. The area of “slight carrying” zone decreased by 5.18% and the area of “severe carrying” zone decreased by 11.99%. (2) Comparing the actual and predicted carrying state of water and land resources in 2018, it was found that the simulation accuracy of “good carrying”, “safe carrying”, “critical carrying”, “slight carrying”, and “severe carrying” reached 98.71%, 92.07%, 95.34%, 94.05%, and 93.73%, respectively. This indicates that the simulation results have high reliability and applicability. (3) The future medium and long-term carrying status of water and land resources are healthy, but this trend is gradually slowing. The “slight carrying” and “severe carrying” zones show the gradual spatial transition from land desertification to soil salinization.

The nitrate pollution of groundwater can cause serious harm to human health. Biochar electrodes, combined with adsorption and electroreduction, have great potential in nitrate removal from groundwater. In this study, bamboo chopsticks were used as feedstocks for biochar preparation. The bamboo chopstick biochar (BCBC), prepared by pyrolysis at 600 °C for 2 h, had a specific surface area of 179.2 m2/g and an electrical conductivity of 8869.2 μS/cm, which was an ideal biochar electrode material. The maximum nitrate adsorption capacity of BCBC-600-2 reached 16.39 mg/g. With an applied voltage of 4 V and hydraulic retention time of 4 h, the nitrate removal efficiency (NRE) reached 75.8%. In comparison, the NRE was only 32.9% without voltage and 25.7% with graphite cathode. Meanwhile, the average nitrate removal rate of biochar electrode was also higher than that of graphite cathode under the same conditions. Therefore, biochar electrode can provide full play to the coupling effect of adsorption and electroreduction processes and obtain more powerful nitrate removal ability. Moreover, the biochar electrode could inhibit the accumulation of nitrite and improve the selectivity of electrochemical reduction. This study not only provides a high-quality biochar electrode material, but also provides a new idea for nitrate removal in groundwater.

The task of the fiber transport channel (FTC) is to transport the fibers from the carding roller to the rotor. Its geometric position in the spinning machine has a strong influence on the characteristics of the airflow field and the trajectory of the fiber motion in both the rotor and the FTC. In this paper, a three-dimensional pumping rotor spinning channel model was established using ANSYS-ICEM-CFD software with three different positions of the FTC (positions a–c). Further, the simulations of air distribution were performed using Fluent software. In addition, the discrete phase model was used to fit the fiber motion trajectory in the rotor. The simulation results showed that among the three types of FTC, position b is the optimal condition. The gradients of airflow velocity in the channel at position b were greater than those of the other two positions, which is conducive to straightening of the fiber.

The unreasonable development and pollution of groundwater have caused damage to the groundwater system and environmental problems. To prevent this, the concept of “groundwater vulnerability” was proposed, and various evaluation methods were developed for groundwater protection. However, with changing climatic conditions and human activities, groundwater vulnerability is now emphasizing physical processes. This study aims to review and analyze the principles and applications of process-based groundwater vulnerability methods to achieve the source protection of groundwater resources. It introduces the assessment method and elaborates on pollutant migration processes and numerical simulation technology. Relevant articles from the past 30 years are reviewed to show the evolution of process-based groundwater vulnerability assessment. The study also discusses current research trends and proposes future development paths. It concludes that process-based groundwater vulnerability assessment will become the mainstream method, and modern technologies such as artificial intelligence will be necessary to solve challenges and achieve sustainable development.

BRCs (bioretention cells), one of many low-impact development (LID) practices, are increasingly utilized to lessen the amount of runoff while simultaneously improving the runoff quality. Because the goal of BRCs and LID designs, in general, is to mimic or replicate the pre-development hydrology, it is critical to evaluate the hydrologic and ecologic performances of the BRC facility from the perspective of replicating the pre-development hydrology. The metrics developed in this study were intended to represent the hydrologic regime including the runoff volume control metrics, peak flow frequency exceedance curve, and flow duration curve. We also used a hydrological indicator of T0.5, the fraction of a multi-year period in which the flow exceeds the 0.5-year return period storm to represent the performances regarding downstream ecology. The indicators were compared to their pre-development values to determine how closely they reflected and replicated the pre-development state. A long-term stormwater management model (SWMM) model was developed to examine conditions before and after development and water movement in BRCs. When the BRCs facilities areas are 5% of the entire impervious study area, key findings show that: (1) BRCs have significant runoff volume control performances. (2) The peak flow frequency exceedance curve with BRCs could fully match the pre-development scenario for minor rainfall events compared to the 0.1-year storm. Flow duration curves with BRCs showed that, the frequency, magnitude, and duration of small flows that occurred for more than 90% of the total time closely matched those of pre-development hydrology. (3) T0.5 with BRCs showed significant improvement compared with the value of the area with no BRCs and was close to the pre-development T0.5. The findings presented in this study indicated the significant performance of BRCs in improving downstream ecology.

Submerged macrophytes and their epiphytic biofilms are important media for metal transport/transformation in aquatic environment. However, the bacterial community structure and the contribution of the epiphytic biofilm to the heavy metal accumulation remain unclear. Therefore, in this study, water, sediment, submerged macrophyte (Potamogeton crispus L.) and its epiphytic biofilm samples in three sites of the moat in the industrial area of Hangzhou were collected for analyzing. The bacterial community structure was significantly impacted by the TN concentrations, and Genus Aeromonas (24.5-41.8%), Acinetobacter (16.2-29.8%) and Pseudomonas (12.6-23.6%) dominated in all epiphytic biofilm samples, which had the heavy metal pollutant resistibility. The contents of Cr in biofilms (7.4-8.3 mg/kg, DW) were significantly higher than those in leaves (1.0-2.4 mg/kg, DW), while the contents of Cu (11.0-13.9 mg/kg, DW) in leaves were significantly higher than those in biofilms (0.7-3.9 mg/kg, DW) in all the three sites. The BCF values of metals in the biofilm were followed the order of YF IC ETS. The results indicated that the epiphytic biofilm had positive effects on the metal bioaccumulation, and the metal accumulation ability increased with the hydrodynamic forces. Bioaccumulation by the epiphytic biofilm may be an effective way for metal (especially Cr) remediation.

Studies on dual crop coefficient method in a greenhouse require accurate values of reference evapotranspiration (ETo). This study was conducted in a solar greenhouse at the experimental station of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences during 2015 and 2016. An automatic weather station was installed in the center of the same greenhouse to record weather parameters at 30-minute intervals. Five ETo models (Penman-Monteith, Penman, radiation, pan evaporation, and Priestley-Taylor) were employed, and their performance was evaluated using the dual crop coefficient method. The basal crop coefficient Kcb and soil evaporation coefficient Ke were adjusted according to the surrounding climate inside the greenhouse. Crop evapotranspiration (ETc) was continuously measured using sap flow system combined with microlysimeter in 2015 and weighing lysimeters in 2016. Daily ETo was simulated from the five models and compared with the measurements. Results show that the adjusted Kcb values were 0.15, 0.94, and 0.65 in 2015 and 0.15, 1.02, and 0.70 in 2016 at initial, midseason, and late-season, respectively. The Ke varies between 0.10 and 0.45 during the whole growth period. The ETc was ≈345 mm for drip-irrigated tomato in solar greenhouse at the whole growth stage. The radiation and pan evaporation models tend to overestimate ETo values. Results of the Penman-Monteith, Penman, and Priestley-Taylor models show comparatively good performance in estimating ETo. Considering the robustness and simplicity, the Priestley-Taylor was recommended as the first choice to estimate ETo of tomato grown in a solar greenhouse. This work can help farmers to optimize the irrigation scheduling based on an ETo model for solar greenhouse vegetables in northern China.

This research aims to explore the dynamic transport of water and salt in soil under different irrigation modes and disclose the desalting effect of different irrigation factors in inland arid irrigation areas. Jingdian Irrigation District in Gansu Province, which is located in the arid region of Northwest China, is selected as a typical experimental area. Soil water and salt dynamic migration model is constructed based on HYDRUS-2D software, and field irrigation experiments are designed according to actual irrigation conditions in crop growth period. The model is used to simulate the salt transport process between saturated soil and unsaturated soil as well as the effects of different irrigation quotas, irrigation rounds and quota allocations on soil desalting. Through simulation, the vertical movement pattern of water and salt in the soil of the test area is analyzed, and the optimal design of the soil desalting irrigation plan is carried out. The results demonstrate that: after two-round irrigation, the average soil salinity of the tillage layer at each test points decreases significantly under evapotranspiration; the infiltration of irrigation water has an obvious impact on soil desalting; the deviation between the simulated and the measured value is less than 0.5%, which proves the model fitting result reliable; with fixed irrigation cycle and times, the soil desalting efficiency is higher when the irrigation quota falls in the range of 4000 ~ 6000 m3/hm2; when the first round of irrigation water only saturates the moisture content and gradually increases the irrigation quota in the subsequent rounds, it is more conducive to the dissolution and discharge of soil salinity. In summary, the results of this study can provide technical support for the protection of water and soil resources, as well as the improvement of saline-alkali land in inland arid irrigation areas.

In order to facilitate watershed management, we developed an expansive river health assessment method based on a fuzzy matter-element extension model in this study that developed based on the transitive hierarchies and degree of membership from improved fuzzy optimization theory. Eight characteristics of river flow, namely, the morphology, flow, water quality, river habitat, aquatic organisms, riparian zone, flood control safety, and level of the water supply, were investigated in this study to establish a system of indices to assess river health. We apply the above method to a river health assessment in the Luanhe River as sub-healthy. The results show that the method is accurate for the river health assessment compared with the actual conditions in Luanhe river. Moreover, the river health assessment method described in this study covers the different health states of river ecosystems, including the natural function and the social service function of a river. It is a reasonable river health assessment method that can evaluate river health status systematically, comprehensively and accurately. Therefore, this method is reasonable and effective and can be used to assess the ecological health of rivers in other regions.

This study proposes a modular floating biofilm reactor (MFBR) for in situ nitrogen removal from slightly polluted water in rivers using enriched indigenous microorganisms. Its main structure is a 60 cm × 60 cm × 90 cm rectangular reactor filled with hackettens. After a 96-day startup, the removal efficiencies of ammonia-N and total N (TN) reached 80% and 25%, respectively, with a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 10 h, whereas those in a control reactor (without biofilm) were only 4.9% and 0.2%, respectively. The influences of HRT and dissolved oxygen (DO) were also investigated. As a key factor, HRT significantly affected the removal efficiencies of ammonia-N and TN. When HRT was close to the actual value for a river studied (2.4 min), the removal efficiencies of ammonia-N and TN were only 8.7% and 3.1%, respectively. Aeration increased the concentration of DO in water, which enhanced nitrification but inhibited denitrification. In view of the limitation of natural conversion between qualitative concept and quantitative value, the fuzzy analysis method cannot be employed to improve the multi-stage fuzzy evaluation method. Improvement of multilevel fuzzy evaluation method based on cloud theory was found, which could comprehensively consider the uncertainty of random combinations and the fuzziness of interaction between influencing factors, and the shortcomings of conventional fuzzy evaluation methods as well eliminated. The structure of 5#U-aqueduct in Jingdian Irrigation District (Gansu, China) was chosen as the research object. Based on the multi-level fuzzy evaluation index system of structural safety, experts were invited to score the importance of factors according to the cloud theory scale criterion to establish a judgment matrix. Therefore, the evaluation set, weight and membership cloud model of evaluation system was constituted by means of bridge safety assessment criterion and cloud generator principle. Furthermore, comprehensive evaluation results of aqueduct service states were obtained by multistage fuzzy composite mapping method, and the actual position of structural safety grade was obtained by comparing the evaluation result with the comment layer cloud drop diagram. The results showed that using cloud model parameters (Ex, En and He) to describe the relative importance of factors can better reflect the randomness and fuzziness of each other than the traditional single number, which was helpful to get the evaluation results accurately and objectively; The comprehensive evaluation results of the aqueduct structure obtained by calculation were WV(75.149, 9.95, 4.16).The simulated cloud droplet diagram was located between II and III classes, and tends to the III standard, which indicated that the overall security of the structure was sufferable. However, attention should be paid to the maintenance and repair of the detailed components. The consequences agreed with the evaluation results of the experts, which indicates that the improved evaluation method has good practicability as well as can be popularized and applied.

Preferential solute transport is a common phenomenon in soil, and it is of great significance to accurately describe the mechanism of pollutant transport and water and soil environmental governance. However, the description of preferential solutes still relies on applying solute breakthrough curves for model parameters fitting. At present, most of the solute breakthrough curves are obtained indoors, and with some limitations. Therefore, this study established a method for securing solute breakthrough curves based on the electrical resistivity method. The research results show that the change in soil concentration during the tracer infiltration process can be captured by establishing the fitting relationship between soil resistivity and solute concentration. Then the solute breakthrough curve can be found. Through a time moment analysis, the difference between the breakthrough curve parameters obtained by the traditional method and the resistivity method is slight; the average error is less than 10%. On this basis, the sensitive response of the parameters of the “mobile–immobile” model to concentration was elucidated through different concentration tracer experiments, among which β and D are more sensitive, and w is less sensitive. The suitable tracer concentration range should be 50–120 mg/L. Therefore, the established method could obtain the breakthrough curves and describe the transport of preferential solutes at the field scale.

According to the problems in dynamic stability analysis for slopes of earth and rockfill dam, the P-Z constitutive model, which is a kind of the multi-mechanism plastic model based on generalized plasticity, is introduced in the paper. Strength reduction factors of P-Z model are derived and verified, and based on them a new kind of method of dam slopes dynamic stability is put forward. For the method, the dynamic stability of dam slopes is judged by dynamic displacement time history and post-earthquake permanent displacement. The results show that local instability of dam slopes and variation features of dynamic response are obtained by the method, which is more reasonable.

Ecological vulnerability assessment of wetlands is a very important early-stage task for wetland protection, pollution treatment, ecological restoration and water resources utilization. On the basis of the study of vulnerability evolution mechanism of wetland ecosystem in the Yellow River Delta, this paper proposes a Pressure-Support-State-Response Model (PSSR) for ecosystem vulnerability assessment and employs a single-factor evaluation method. The proposed model is applied to assessing ecosystem vulnerability of wetland in Yellow River Delta (a case study of Dongying City). Research results show that: from 2005 to 2009, the ecosystem vulnerability of wetlands in Yellow River Delta was 0.62, and 0.68 from 2010 to 2014; the ecosystem vulnerability grade is moderately vulnerable during the two periods. Generally speaking, regional ecosystem vulnerability slightly decreases. More efforts should be made to protect and restore the ecosystem and prevent it from deterioration and wetlands degradation. This study may provide a theoretical support for wetland protection, management, exploitation and policy making in the Yellow River Delta.

In sportswear industry, the usage of synthetic material is increasing due to its excellent water transport characteristic. This study aims to evaluate the thermo-physiological comfort properties of different sports fabrics and to investigate the effect of fabric physical property and knitting parameter on comfort-related properties of commercial sportswear fabric. Vertical wicking test, wettability test, dry rate test as well as air resistance test were conducted on 17 types of polyester-knitted fabrics obtained from market. Analysis of variance and multiple-comparison least significant difference test was performed to select the best fabric for sportswear. A single jersey fabric sample No. 16 made of 75D/100f in 145 g/m2 as determined to be the best fabric for sports T-shirt due to its excellent wicking property, faster water absorbency, quicker dry rate, and lower air resistance. Last century 50 - 70 years, the dam construction of Shiyang Inland River Basin (SIRB) profound impact on the distribution of water resources and arable land in the basin. Through data collection, field surveys and remote sensing image interpretation, we analysis the use of land and water resources change process in the middle and lower reaches of SIRB in recent decades. The results show: (1) The cultivated area of SIRB has been an upward trend in recent decades, The whole basin cultivated area has increased total 229,000 hm2 from 1973 to 2010 and mainly in the middle and lower reaches. Midstream increased by 149,700 hm2 accounting for 65.36 percent of total, downstream increased by 70,000 hm2 accounting for 30.70 percent of total. (2) The amount of surface water resources of downstream reduce significantly gradually since dam construction, and the water table sharp decline. While the volume of surface water resources come downstream from the 1950s accounted for 30 to 40 percent of the total gradually reduced to less than 10% in 2012; (3) since the arable land area of middle and lower reaches of SIRB basin substantial increase, so the surface water resource does not meet irrigation needs. Agricultural irrigation relies heavily on exploitation of groundwater to supplement, resulting in Regional Groundwater Depth dropped rapidly, and forming several huge funnel groundwater settlements. 20 years from 1981 to 2001 the groundwater level of midstream dropped from around 5m to around 10m in Wuwei, and in Minqin dam-region of downstream along faster rate of decline in 20 years fell from 8.52 m to 22.68 m. Dam construction project has changed the pattern of the basin water cycle, the middle reaches closure a large number of surface water resources led to downstream sharp decline. Downstream continued exploitation of groundwater formed a few huge funnel groundwater settlements, it caused serious ecological problems. The basin should adjust the industrial structure and develop water saving irrigation, promote a virtuous cycle of water resources, to achieve sustainable development, seek a sustainable development ways conversion natural oasis to artificial oasis efficiency in arid zone.

The distribution characteristics and migration mechanism of seepage field of reservoir groundwater can determine the geographical characteristics of reservoir area to a large extent. The permeability of reservoir area is especially important since it is an important indicator of karst development characteristics and its hydrogeological condition in karst area, and it’s difficult to conduct quantitative analysis of its parameters. According to the needs of practical engineering application, I use the C# and FORTRAN program to design a calculation method. I also use seepage field numerical simulation in reservoir area of one pumped storage power station on the east to testify the correctness and practicability of this calculation method. Judging from the groundwater level contour map, we can see that groundwater shed and surface water shed are basically the same. Groundwater can be distributed to surrounding areas from the upper reservoir. Because of the resistance effect of non-karst area on north and south, groundwater flows out in the form of spring in north and south. The groundwater flows to Zimei Bridge on east side, and Yaoshiwan on west side. The repeated experiments of parameters show that groundwater seepage field is insensitive to the change of other areas’ permeability parameter. Results show that this calculation method is well-adapted, accurate, applicable and practical.

Conservancy project bidding-evaluating is a typical multi-attributes and multi-gargets decision-making problem, and which needs to think over attributes of all indexes comprehensively. In this study, Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution (TOPSIS method) is proposed and applied to project bidding-evaluating, at the same time, in order to avoid the drawback of expert experience and subjective decision, information entropy method is adopted to calculate the weight coefficient of the index. TOPSIS model based on information entropy is simple and can be easily accepted, which could achieve satisfying results. Therefore, it provides us with a scientific and reasonable method to ascertain bidder and has an extensive application value.

The rules of microscopic water-salt transportation can be revealed and the impact on the macroscopic water and soil resources can be further predicted by selecting a typical study area and carrying out continuous monitoring. In this paper, Jingtaichuan Electrical Lifting Irrigation District in Gansu Province (hereinafter called as JingDian irrigation district (JID)) located at the inland desert region of northwest China was selected as study area. Based on the groundwater-salt transportation data of representative groundwater monitoring wells in different hydrogeological units, the groundwater-salt evolution and transportation tendency in both closed and unclosed hydrogeological units were analyzed and the quantity relative ratio relationship of regional water-salt input-excretion was calculated. The results showed that the salt brought in by artificial irrigation accounts for the highest proportion of about 63.99% and the salt carried off by the discharge of irrigation water accounts for 66.42%, namely, the water-salt evolution and transportation were mainly controlled by artificial irrigation. As the general features of regional water-salt transportation, groundwater salinity and soil salt content variation were mainly decided by the transportation of soil soluble salt which showed an obvious symbiosis gathering regularity, but the differentiation with insoluble salt components was significant in the transportation process. Besides, groundwater salinity of the unclosed hydrogeological unit presented a periodically fluctuating trend, while the groundwater salinity and soil salt content in water and salt accumulation zone of the closed hydrogeological unit showed an increasing tendency, which formed the main occurrence area of soil secondary salinization.

Assessment of ecoenvironmental vulnerability plays an important role in the guidance of regional planning, the construction and protection of ecological environment, which requires comprehensive consideration on regional resources, environment, ecology, society and other factors. Based on the driving mechanism and evolution characteristics of ecoenvironmental vulnerability in cold and arid regions of China, a novel evaluation index system on ecoenvironmental vulnerability is proposed in this paper. For the disadvantages of conventional entropy weight method, an improved entropy weight assessment model on ecoenvironmental vulnerability is developed and applied to evaluate the ecoenvironmental vulnerability in western Jilin Province of China. The assessing results indicate that the model is suitable for ecoenvironmental vulnerability assessment, and it shows more reasonable evaluation criterion, more distinct insights and satisfactory results combined with the practical conditions. The model can provide a new method for regional ecoenvironmental vulnerability evaluation.
