Streptomyces sp. VB1, an actinomycete isolated from marine sediments in Valparaíso Bay, Chile, synthesizes antimicrobial and antiproliferative compounds. This study presents comprehensive metabolomics and comparative genomics analyses of strain VB1. LC-HRMS dereplication and Molecular Networking analysis of crude extracts identified antibiotics such as globomycin and daunorubicin, along with known and potentially novel members of the arylomycin family. These compounds exhibit activity against a range of clinically relevant bacterial and cancer cell lines. Phylogenomic analysis underscores the uniqueness of strain VB1, suggesting it represents a novel taxon. Such uniqueness is further supported by its Biosynthetic Novelty Index (BiNI) and BiG-SCAPE analysis of Gene Cluster Families (GCFs). Notably, two Biosynthetic Gene Clusters (BGCs) were found to be unique to VB1 compared to closely related strains: BGC #15, which encodes potentially novel anthracycline compounds with cancer cell growth inhibition properties, and BGC #28, which features a non-canonical configuration combining arylomycin, globomycin, and siamycin BGCs. This supercluster, the first described to consist of more than two adjacent and functional BGCs, co-produces at least three antimicrobial compounds from different antibiotic families. These findings highlight Streptomyces sp. VB1’s potential for discovering new bioactive molecules, positioning it as a promising candidate for further research.

Abstract Exploring Brevibacterium strains from various ecosystems may lead to the discovery of new antibiotic-producing strains. Brevibacterium sp. H-BE7, a strain isolated from marine sediments from Northern Patagonia, Chile, had its genome sequenced to study the biosynthetic potential to produce novel natural products within the Brevibacterium genus. The genome sequences of 98 Brevibacterium strains, including strain H-BE7, were selected for a genomic analysis. A phylogenomic cladogram was generated, which divided the Brevibacterium strains into four major clades. A total of 25 strains are potentially unique new species according to Average Nucleotide Identity (ANIb) values. These strains were isolated from various environments, emphasizing the importance of exploring diverse ecosystems to discover the full diversity of Brevibacterium. Pangenome analysis of Brevibacterium strains revealed that only 2.5% of gene clusters are included within the core genome, and most gene clusters occur either as singletons or as cloud genes present in less than ten strains. Brevibacterium strains from various phylogenomic clades exhibit diverse BGCs. Specific groups of BGCs show clade-specific distribution patterns, such as siderophore BGCs and carotenoid-related BGCs. A group of clade IV-A Brevibacterium strains possess a clade-specific Polyketide synthase (PKS) BGCs that connects with phenazine-related BGCs. Within the PKS BGC, five genes, including the biosynthetic PKS gene, participate in the mevalonate pathway and exhibit similarities with the phenazine A BGC. However, additional core biosynthetic phenazine genes were exclusively discovered in nine Brevibacterium strains, primarily isolated from cheese. Evaluating the antibacterial activity of strain H-BE7, it exhibited antimicrobial activity against Salmonella enterica and Listeria monocytogenes. Chemical dereplication identified bioactive compounds, such as 1-methoxyphenazine in the crude extracts of strain H-BE7, which could be responsible of the observed antibacterial activity. While strain H-BE7 lacks the core phenazine biosynthetic genes, it produces 1-methoxyphenazine, indicating the presence of an unknown biosynthetic pathway for this compound. This suggests the existence of alternative biosynthetic pathways or promiscuous enzymes within H-BE7’s genome.

El presente artículo ofrece una traducción anotada del Tratado acerca de las reglas del arte de los poetas (Qawānīn fī ṣināʿat al- šuʿarāʾ) de Abū Naṣr al-Fārābī. Acompañamos esta traducción de una introducción dividida en tres partes. En primer lugar, se ofrece un contexto general acerca del lugar del Qawānīn en la obra de al-Fārābī y en la tradición filosófica árabe. En segundo, se plantea una posible división temática del texto. Y finalmente, en tercer lugar, se especifican las peculiaridades de la traducción, referente al texto tomado como base y las principales decisiones de traducción.

There are contrasting results of the association between center-based care attendance and child development, mainly related to how the time of entry and permanence in the program relates to developmental outcomes. Using latent class analysis in a nationally representative sample of Chilean children between 6 and 35 months old (n = 3,992), and controlling for the child's age, maternal education, mother's marital status, and household income, we identify three different timings of entrance in center-based care programs. The three timings of entrance were defined as "early-entry" (16%), those children who are more likely to enter before they are 6 months old; "middle-entry" (16%), those who are more likely to enter when they are between 6 and 18 months old; and "late-entry" (68%), those children with a low probability of enrollment any time before they are 35 months old. We found that children from the "early"- and "middle-entry" classes had higher language development when compared with children from the "late-entry" class. Still, only those from the "middle-entry" class showed higher general development in the Battelle test. In contrast, children in the "early"- and "middle-entry" classes presented higher scores in the Child Behavior Checklist's externalizing behavior scale than children in the "late-entry" class. Our findings highlight the existence of a likely linkage between the timing of entry to center-based care and child development. It is essential to understand the potential advantages of center-based care in younger children, especially in enhancing their vocabulary and general development, and the potential negative association of early-entry with problematic behavior.

The natural products (NPs) biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) represent the adapting biochemical toolkit for microorganisms to thrive different microenvironments. Despite their high diversity, particularly at the genomic level, detecting them in a shake-flask is challenging and remains the primary obstacle limiting our access to valuable chemicals. Studying the molecular mechanisms that regulate BGC expression is crucial to design of artificial conditions that derive on their expression. Here, we propose a phylogenetic analysis of regulatory elements linked to biosynthesis gene clusters, to classify BGCs to regulatory mechanisms based on protein domain information. We utilized Hidden Markov Models from the Pfam database to retrieve regulatory elements, such as histidine kinases and transcription factors, from BGCs in the MIBiG database, focusing on actinobacterial strains from three distinct environments: oligotrophic basins, rainforests, and marine environments. Despite the environmental variations, our isolated microorganisms share similar regulatory mechanisms, suggesting the potential to activate new BGCs using activators known to affect previously characterized BGCs.

Abstract Background Previous representative health surveys conducted in Chile evidenced a high obesity prevalence rate among adults, especially in female and urban areas. Nevertheless, these have limited utility for targeted interventions and local source allocation for prevention. This study analyzes the increments in obesity prevalence rates in populations ≥15 years of age and the geographic variation at the regional level. We also assessed whether the obesity rates have different patterns on a smaller geographic level than national and regional ones. Methods This ecological study analyzed data from two representative national samples of adolescents and adults ≥15 years old, who participated in the last Chilean health surveys, 2009 (n = 5412) and 2016 (n = 6233). Obesity (body mass index≥30 kg/m2) rates were calculated on the national, regional, and Health service (HS) levels, being HS the smallest unit of analysis available. Obesity rates and relative increase to early identify target populations and geographic areas, with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI), were calculated using the sampling design of the national surveys, at the national and regional level, and by gender, age groups, and socioeconomic status. The Fay-Herriot (FH) models, using auxiliary data, were fitted for obesity rate estimates at the HS level. Results The relative increase in obesity rate was 37.1% (95%CI 23.3–52.9) at the national level, with a heterogeneous geographic distribution at the regional one. Southern regions had the highest obesity rates in both surveys (Aysén: 35.2, 95%CI 26.9–43.5 in 2009, 44.3 95%CI 37–51.7 in 2016), but higher increases were predominantly in the northern and central areas of the country (relative increase 91.1 95%CI 39.6–110.1 in Valparaiso and 81.6 95%CI 14.4–196.2 in Tarapacá). Obesity rates were higher in females, older age, and lower socioeconomic groups; nevertheless, relative increases were higher in the opposite ones. The FH estimates showed an obesity rates variation at the HS level, where higher rates tend to converge to specific HS areas of each region. Conclusion Obesity rates and relative increase are diverse across subnational levels and substantially differ from the national estimates, highlighting a pattern that converges to areas with low-middle income households. Our results emphasize geographical disparities in obesity prevalence among adults and adolescents.

This study examines how classroom activities, student gender and student personal interest in science studies and careers predict situational interest in physics learning. Teaching modules were designed based on the secondary physics curricula in Finland (Helsinki) and Chile (Santiago and Viña del Mar) emphasising students engagement in scientific practices. The study was implemented in four classrooms in both countries. Data on situational interest and ongoing classroom activities were obtained using the experience sampling method, with measurements taken three times during a lesson. The process yielded a total of 1717 measurements in the Finnish schools and 1767 in the Chilean schools. Multilevel regression analyses with mixed effects and random intercept were conducted. Results showed a positive effect of scientific practices that required asking questions, designing scientific inquiry and interpreting data on situational interest. Student collaborative situations were more interesting for Chilean students than for Finnish ones. In terms of gender differences, on average, Finnish male and female students experienced the same level of situational interest, while the situational interest of Chilean female students was higher than the average of male students. Personal interest in science studies and careers was the best predictor of situational interest in both countries.

Situational engagement is a key element in promoting students' maintained interest and focused attention in learning. Most research on students engagement has been variable-centered, and only few studies have examined situational patterns of student engagement. The present study used person-oriented approach (e.g., latent profile analysis with Mplus multigroup comparison and 3-step procedure) to examine patterns of students' situational engagement in science (e.g., situational interest, skills, and challenge), differences in the engagement patterns during regular vs. intervention science lessons, and the extent to which situational expectations and task values (e.g., attainment and utility values) are associated with engagement patterns. Chilean ninth grade students participated in the study using Experience Sampling Method (N = 77 students; 475 situational responses). Three patterns of engagement were identified: a) "medium interest and skills" (21% and 23% of the moments during regular/intervention lessons, b) "high interest and skills" (12% and 16%), and c) "low interest, skills, and challenge" (13% and 15%). Situational task values and expectations were positively associated with high and medium engagement patterns, especially during the regular science lessons.

Social capital (SC) has been described as the "glue" that facilitates close social relationships among individuals, groups, and communities. However, few studies have empirically tested the structure of this concept. We report two studies that advance and test a model of SC in youth involved in social organizations. A theory-guided multidimensional representation of SC comprising six dimensions--social trust, interpersonal trust, participation processes, team work, political efficacy, and peer solidarity--was tested in a sample of 377 Chilean youth. Participants (51% males, M age = 21 years) were mostly students (90%) drawn from 41 youth organizations that pursued either prosocial or political goals. Findings from confirmatory factor analysis supported a four-factor instead of the original six-factor model. This structure was confirmed in an independent sample of 150 participants of social and political organizations. The four-factor second-order model included interpersonal trust, participation processes, team work, and peer solidarity as first-order factors.

The increase in microbial sequenced genomes from pure cultures and metagenomic samples reflects the current attainability of whole-genome and shotgun sequencing methods. However, software for genome visualization still lacks automation, integration of different analyses, and customizable options for non-experienced users. In this study, we introduce GenoVi, a Python command-line tool able to create custom circular genome representations for the analysis and visualization of microbial genomes and sequence elements. It is designed to work with complete or draft genomes, featuring customizable options including 25 different built-in color palettes (including 5 color-blind safe palettes), text formatting options, and automatic scaling for complete genomes or sequence elements with more than one replicon/sequence. Using a Genbank format file as the input file or multiple files within a directory, GenoVi (i) visualizes genomic features from the GenBank annotation file, (ii) integrates a Cluster of Orthologs Group (COG) categories analysis using DeepNOG, (iii) automatically scales the visualization of each replicon of complete genomes or multiple sequence elements, (iv) and generates COG histograms, COG frequency heatmaps and output tables including general stats of each replicon or contig processed. GenoVi's potential was assessed by analyzing single and multiple genomes of Bacteria and Archaea. Paraburkholderia genomes were analyzed to obtain a fast classification of replicons in large multipartite genomes. GenoVi works as an easy-to-use command-line tool and provides customizable options to automatically generate genomic maps for scientific publications, educational resources, and outreach activities. BackgroundOne of the main lessons of the COVID-19 pandemic is that we must prepare to face another pandemic like it. Consequently, this article aims to develop a general framework consisting of epidemiological modeling and a practical identifiability approach to assess combined vaccination and non-pharmaceutical intervention (NPI) strategies for the dynamics of any transmissible disease.Materials and methodsEpidemiological modeling of the present work relies on delay differential equations describing time variation and transitions between suitable compartments. The practical identifiability approach relies on parameter optimization, a parametric bootstrap technique, and data processing. We implemented a careful parameter optimization algorithm by searching for suitable initialization according to each processed dataset. In addition, we implemented a parametric bootstrap technique to accurately predict the ICU curve trend in the medium term and assess vaccination.ResultsWe show the framework's calibration capabilities for several processed COVID-19 datasets of different regions of Chile. We found a unique range of parameters that works well for every dataset and provides overall numerical stability and convergence for parameter optimization. Consequently, the framework produces outstanding results concerning quantitative tracking of COVID-19 dynamics. In addition, it allows us to accurately predict the ICU curve trend in the medium term and assess vaccination. Finally, it is reproducible since we provide open-source codes that consider parameter initialization standardized for every dataset.ConclusionThis work attempts to implement a holistic and general modeling framework for quantitative tracking of the dynamics of any transmissible disease, focusing on accurately predicting the ICU curve trend in the medium term and assessing vaccination. The scientific community could adapt it to evaluate the impact of combined vaccination and NPIs strategies for COVID-19 or any transmissible disease in any country and help visualize the potential effects of implemented plans by policymakers. In future work, we want to improve the computational cost of the parametric bootstrap technique or use another more efficient technique. The aim would be to reconstruct epidemiological curves to predict the combined NPIs and vaccination policies' impact on the ICU curve trend in real-time, providing scientific evidence to help anticipate policymakers' decisions.

This paper analyzes the experience of Teach For All partners in different countries around the globe in three areas: (a) Recruitment and Selection; (b) Training and Development; and (c) Placement. Using information from semi-structured interviews with Teach For All staff members and national partners, we analyze the key elements of the Teach For All approach in these areas. Based on that analysis we argue that Teach For All's active recruitment and rigorous selection of candidates, emphasis of quality over length in training, the continued support offered to teachers and the heavy emphasis on data and evaluation constitute practices that, if pursued at the systems level, could enhance the quality of teaching and, consequently, learning outcomes in Latin America.

Interest in understanding how civic engagement emerges has been fueled by worries about the decline of youth participation in conventional political activities. Acknowledging the developmental nature of civic engagement, this study analyzes involvement in civic activities during early adolescence. We used latent class analysis to identify patterns of participation in a representative sample of Chilean adolescents. A four-class model was highlighted by two contrasting classes: an "involved" class, with high probabilities of participation, and an "uninvolved" class, with low probabilities of participation. A third class--"volunteers"--mostly participates in organizations involved in community service, religious or social causes. This type of participation conforms to the preservation of the status quo, in contrast to a more political or activist form of participation that challenges it. Classes were partially invariant by gender and socioeconomic status. Females were more prevalent in the "involved" class, and males in the "uninvolved" class. Adolescents' interest in politics, discussion of political issues, citizenship self-efficacy, and school involvement were associated with higher odds of belonging to the "involved" class.

Mientras los derechos de hombres gais y mujeres lesbianas han recibido creciente reconocimiento en el mundo, la discriminación y el prejuicio han mutado a formas más encubiertas. El objetivo principal de este estudio fue validar la versión de 10 ítems de la Modern Homonegativity Scale (MHS) en sus 2 formas paralelas: homonegatividad moderna hacia hombres gais (MHS-G) y homonegatividad moderna hacia mujeres lesbianas (MHS-L). Los participantes de este estudio fueron 182 jóvenes chilenos, residentes en Santiago, con un rango de edad entre 18 y 25 años, seleccionados por medio de una muestra no probabilística por conveniencia. Un análisis factorial confirmatorio aportó evidencia a favor de la unidimensionalidad de ambas versiones. Ambas formas del instrumento obtuvieron buenos indicadores de consistencia interna, de acuerdo al índice Omega de McDonald (ωgay = 0,91, 95% IC [0,89, 0,93; ωles = 0,90, 95% IC [0,88, 0,92]). Los análisis multigrupo realizados sugieren que ambas formas serían invariantes para hombres y mujeres, así como invariantes entre ellas. Encontramos una asociación positiva entre los niveles de homonegatividad moderna y los niveles de sexismo y conservadurismo, y una relación negativa con afectos positivos e intención de contacto con hombres gais y mujeres lesbianas. Estos resultados apoyan el uso de las 2 formas chilenas del instrumento (MHS-G y MHS-L), lo que permite contar con un instrumento útil para medir nuevas formas de expresión del prejuicio hacia hombres gais y mujeres lesbianas en jóvenes chilenos.

La educación primaria y secundaria en Chile es un derecho gratuito y obligatorio que está protegido por la Constitución Política de la República, por lo que no asistir a un establecimiento formal representa una violación a los derechos fundamentales del ser humano. Se estima que entre 139 y 358 mil jóvenes de entre seis y 21 años se encuentran fuera del sistema escolar chileno. El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo identificar las características de los estudiantes que han desertado del sistema escolar regular y que asisten actualmente a escuelas de reingreso, utilizando una metodología cuantitativa no experimental. A través de un análisis de clases latentes se pudo comprobar que las características de los jóvenes se distribuyen de manera heterogénea, conformando tres grupos distintos (novatos, antiguos y complejos), que poseen dificultades y características particulares. Estos hallazgos son distintos de los de otras muestras estudiadas (programas preventivos y programas socioeducativos). Se concluye que los estudiantes de escuelas de reingreso constituyen un grupo de jóvenes, mayoritariamente hombres, que abandonan apresuradamente la educación formal, cuentan con distintos años de rezago escolar y poseen características sociodemográficas que obstaculizan la trayectoria educativa —como la pobreza monetaria—, sin embargo evidencian una baja frecuencia de problemas con la justicia y medidas de protección.

Previous research has focused on the relation between social class and prosocial behavior. However, this relation is yet unclear. In this work, we shed light on this issue by considering the effect of the level of empathy and the social class of the recipient of help on two types of prosociality, namely helping and caring. In one experimental study, we found that for high-class participants, empathy had a positive effect on helping, regardless of the recipient’s social class. However, empathy had no effect for low-class participants. When it comes to caring, empathy had a positive effect for both high and low-class participants, but only when the recipient of help belonged to the same social class. This highlights that empathy by itself is not sufficient to promote cooperative relations and that the social class of the recipient of help should be taken into account to shed light on this issue.

Through a cross-sectional design, this study examines whether practices of active participation (AP; that is, opportunities for decision making and leadership) and quality of relationships (QR) established between members of youth organizations (i.e., affective and instrumental support) relate to dimensions of youth's identity (i.e., personal purpose, personal meaning) and sense of sociopolitical control (i.e., leadership, political efficacy). Participants (n = 347; 17-26 years) were drawn from 38 youth organizations in two regions of Chile. Results from multiple regression models controlling for demographics, length of involvement, and aim of the organization yielded significant interactions between QR and practices of AP on both indicators of identity and political efficacy. Only length of involvement in the organization was related to leadership outcomes. Findings highlight the powerful effects of the quality of the relational context of youth programs and organizations to actualize the benefits of AP.

In this work we develop a general mathematical model and devise a practical identifiability approach for gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) metastasis to the liver, with the aim of quantitatively describing therapy failure due to drug resistance. To this end, we have modeled metastatic growth and therapy failure produced by resistance to two standard treatments based on tyrosine kinase inhibitors (Imatinib and Sunitinib) that have been observed clinically in patients with GIST metastasis to the liver. The parameter identification problem is difficult to solve, since there are no general results on this issue for models based on ordinary differential equations (ODE) like the ones studied here. We propose a general modeling framework based on ODE for GIST metastatic growth and therapy failure due to drug resistance and analyzed five different model variants, using medical image observations (CT scans) from patients that exhibit drug resistance. The associated parameter estimation problem was solved using the Nelder-Mead simplex algorithm, by adding a regularization term to the objective function to address model instability, and assessing the agreement of either an absolute or proportional error in the objective function. We compared the goodness of fit to data for the proposed model variants, as well as evaluated both error forms in order to improve parameter estimation results. From the model variants analyzed, we identified the one that provides the best fit to all the available patient data sets, as well as the best assumption in computing the objective function (absolute or proportional error). This is the first work that reports mathematical models capable of capturing and quantitatively describing therapy failure due to drug resistance based on clinical images in a patient-specific manner.

Extremophiles are organisms capable of adjust, survive or thrive in hostile habitats that were previously thought to be adverse or lethal for life. Chile gathers a wide range of extreme environments: salars, geothermal springs, and geysers located at Altiplano and Atacama Desert, salars and cold mountains in Central Chile, and ice fields, cold lakes and fjords, and geothermal sites in Patagonia and Antarctica. The aims of this review are to describe extremophiles that inhabit main extreme biotopes in Chile, and their molecular and physiological capabilities that may be advantageous for bioremediation processes. After briefly describing the main ecological niches of extremophiles along Chilean territory, this review is focused on the microbial diversity and composition of these biotopes microbiomes. Extremophiles have been isolated in diverse zones in Chile that possess extreme conditions such as Altiplano, Atacama Desert, Central Chile, Patagonia, and Antarctica. Interesting extremophiles from Chile with potential biotechnological applications include thermophiles (e.g., Methanofollis tationis from Tatio Geyser), acidophiles (e.g., Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, Leptospirillum ferriphilum from Atacama Desert and Central Chile copper ores), halophiles (e.g., Shewanella sp. Asc-3 from Altiplano, Streptomyces sp. HKF-8 from Patagonia), alkaliphiles (Exiguobacterium sp. SH31 from Altiplano), xerotolerant bacteria (S. atacamensis from Atacama Desert), UV- and Gamma-resistant bacteria (Deinococcus peraridilitoris from Atacama Desert) and psychrophiles (e.g., Pseudomonas putida ATH-43 from Antarctica). The molecular and physiological properties of diverse extremophiles from Chile and their application in bioremediation or waste treatments are further discussed. Interestingly, the remarkable adaptative capabilities of extremophiles convert them into an attractive source of catalysts for bioremediation and industrial processes.

In this paper we discuss and propose theoretical elements considered relevant to open and develop a theoretical-empiric line of research on the public opinion (PO) in Chile today. We suggest that there are different conceptions, practices and actors involved in “making PO”, recognizing five areas in this field: media system, subaltern counter-publics, social digital networks, survey industry and elites. In each of these areas it is necessary to inquire into their specific actors, practices and senses mobilized in the process of production of PO.The paper focuses on discussing the development of the main current comprehensive modalities of the PO and presenting a conceptual proposal for each of the five areas described above, as well as a brief characterization of these areas in Chile. We consider these definitions as a basic starting point to habilitate a line of research that allows us to design a device for monitoring PO. The device will be hosted at the PO observatory and it will contribute to activate networks of knowledge and action in the public sphere by providing periodically with public information regarding issues of general interest to the actors involved in the production of PO.

Objectives: Research from developed countries shows that child maltreatment increases the risk for substance use and problems. However, little evidence on this relationship is available from developing countries, and recognition of this relationship may have important implications for substance demand reduction strategies, including efforts to prevent and treat substance use and related problems. Latin America and the Caribbean is a rich and diverse region of the world with a large range of social and cultural influences. A working group constituted by the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission and the Center for Addiction and Mental Health in June, 2010 identified research on this relationship as a priority area for a multinational research partnership. Methods: This paper examines the association between self-reported child maltreatment and use in the past 12 months of alcohol and cannabis in 2294 university students in seven participating universities in six participating countries: Colombia, El Salvador, Jamaica, Nicaragua, Panama and Uruguay. The research also considers the possible impact of religiosity and minimal psychological distress as factors contributing to resiliency in these samples. Results: The results showed that experience of maltreatment was associated with increased use of alcohol and cannabis. However, the effects differed depending on the type of maltreatment experienced. Higher levels of religiosity were consistently associated with lower levels of alcohol and cannabis use, but we found no evidence of an impact of minimal psychological distress on these measures. Conclusions: This preliminary study shows that the experience of maltreatment may increase the risk of alcohol and cannabis use among university students in Latin American and Caribbean countries, but that higher levels of religiosity may reduce that risk. More work to determine the nature and significance of these relationships is needed. (Contains 2 tables.)

Estudio derivado de una investigación exploratoria, correlacional-descriptiva, que estudió retrospectivamente el maltrato durante la infancia y su posible relación con el uso de sustancias psicoactivantes entre estudiantes universitarios. El maltrato infantil auto-reportado se evaluó mediante el Cuestionario de Experiencias Adversas Durante la Niñez, y para evaluar la disfunción familiar y el malestar psicológico (distress) se aplicó la Escala de Kessler (K10) a 302 estudiantes. Los principales indicadores de maltrato infantil fueron: negligencia =18,2%; maltrato emocional =17.9%; maltrato físico =13.6%; abuso sexual =2.0%. Otros indicadores relevantes fueron: madre/cuidadora agredida, 9.3%; madre/cuidadora golpeada repetidamente por al menos algunos minutos, 5.3%; y madre/cuidadora herida con arma blanca o de fuego, 3.6%. Se concluye que existe relación entre el "abuso emocional y el "abuso físico", y entre el "abuso emocional" y la "disfunción familiar" así como la detección de violencia de género en familias según estrato socioeconómico.

Las drogas ilícitas junto con el abuso sexual durante la infancia son responsables de una considerable morbilidad en el mundo. Los resultados del presente estudio muestran que el abuso sexual fue reportada por el 8.9% [IC95% (6.1%, 11.8%)] de los encuestados. La prevalencia del consumo de drogas ilícitas (Cannabis, Cocaína, Éxtasis ó Heroína) en el último año fue del 15.5% [IC95% (11.8%, 19.2%)]. Después de haber ajustado los Modelos Lineales Generalizados por sexo, edad y procedencia de los estudiantes, se determinó que estudiantes del sexo femenino que fueron víctima de abuso sexual durante la infancia tienen 2.3 [p=0.01; IC95%; (1.2, 4.5)] más posibilidades de consumir drogas ilícitas en comparación con estudiantes del sexo femenino que no sufrieron de este tipo de abusos. Estos resultados ponen de manifiesto la magnitud del abuso sexual durante la infancia y su relación, a largo plazo, en el consumo de drogas ilícitas.

El objetivo del estudio fue examinar la relación entre el uso de drogas en estudiantes universitarios de una universidad en San Salvador y su relación con el maltrato durante la niñez. Este estudio fue de corte transversal, siendo el tamaño de la muestra de 272 estudiantes, con un error muestral del 5%. Los resultados más importantes fueron: el 6.6% de los estudiantes manifestó haber sufrido abuso sexual, el 24.6% abuso físico y el mismo porcentaje fue reportado para el abuso verbal mientras que el 12.9% reportó negligencia emocional o física. El 55.1% reportó distress psicológico mínimo. El 43% ha consumido drogas alguna vez en su vida. El 58.45% tiene amigos que usan drogas. El alcohol, el cannabis y el tabaco son las drogas más usadas. El 70% de los estudiantes que usan drogas sufrieron algún tipo de maltrato. En cuanto a las asociaciones, sólo en el abuso físico se encontró una asociación estadísticamente significativa con una probabilidad de error menor al 0.05. Los datos no pueden ser generalizados a los estudiantes universitarios de San Salvador, El Salvador.

El objetivo del estudio fue examinar la relación de los factores socio-culturales de familia, entretenimiento y espiritualidad y la influencia de pares y el consumo de drogas entre los estudiantes universitarios. Estudio es multicéntrico, con un diseño transversal, participaron 250 estudiantes de una universidad en San Salvador, El Salvador. Se realizaron análisis porcentuales, pruebas de asociación y correlación. Se encontró que los factores socioculturales de familia y espiritualidad podrían estar protegiendo ya que la mayoría 80% valoran positivamente estos dos valores. La mayoría de estudiantes consumen muy poco drogas ilícitas, marihuana 2%, cocaína 1% y anfetaminas 1.2%; pero consume más las drogas lícitas alcohol 42%, tabaco 21%.

Investigación cuantitativa de tipo descriptiva-exploratoria, con diseño transversal que investigado el papel de la familia, la espiritualidad y entretenimiento en la moderá a la relación entre influencia de la pares y el consumo de drogas entre estudiantes universitarios. La muestra fue conformada por 250 estudiantes de una universidad pública brasileira de forma no probabilística. Fue elaborado un cuestionario con 5 escalas ya validadas, que interrogaba sobre la influencia del grupo de pares, las relaciones familiares, el entretenimiento, la espiritualidad y el consumo de drogas. Se utilizó el programa SPSS versión 18 para el análisis estadística. Los datos indicaran que el 90,8% de los estudiantes de la muestran reportaron tener por lo menos un amigo que consumía drogas, las drogas mas consumidas fueron alcohol, tabaco y marihuana. Se estableció asociación significativa entre algunos factores académicos y culturales con el consumo de drogas legales e ilegales Se recomienda que deben ser elaboradas estrategias preventivas considerando la influencia de los factores culturales sobre el consumo de drogas entre los estudiantes universitarios.

Estudio exploratorio cuantitativo que examina la relación entre el uso de drogas en estudiantes de una universidad en León, Nicaragua y su relación con el maltrato durante la niñez. Se realizó un estudio de corte transversal con perspectiva bioecológica en 368 participantes, de los cuales 178 (48.4%) eran hombres y 190 (51.6%) mujeres estudiantes de una universidad de León. Entre los resultados se destaca que la negligencia se encontró en 54.6% de los participantes distribuidos por género de igual forma (56.3% hombres y 53.2% mujeres). En relación al abuso psicológico, éste se representó en el 40.5%, siendo el 70 (39.3%) hombres y (79) 41.6% mujeres. El 54.1% de los participantes tenían padres que se han separado, 44.3% viven o han vivido en algún momento de su vida con un alcohólico, 28.8% han presenciado que a su madre o cuidadora fuese abusada, 26.1% han vivido o vive con un familiar con enfermedad mental, mientras que un 21.2% ha vivido con un drogadicto. Se puede concluir que el maltrato infantil es común y que la negligencia es un evento cotidiano entre los participantes del estudio.

Se evaluó la prevalencia del uso y abuso de sustancias psicoactivas en los estudiantes y su relación con las experiencias adversas durante la infancia y la adolescencia en una investigación de tipo exploratorio, transversal, observacional, basada en el autoreporte de 280 estudiantes universitarios. El consumo reportado de sustancias psicoactivas fue del 72.1%. Las tres sustancias psicoactivas más frecuentemente utilizadas en el último año fueron el alcohol (24.3%), la marihuana (19.3%) y el tabaco (16.4%). Un 33.9% de los estudiantes refirieron que sus pares abusaban de sustancias. El maltrato físico y el psicológico fueron las categorías más frecuentemente reportadas. Los estudiantes que afirmaron tener pares que abusaban de sustancias psicoactivas presentaron una probabilidad siete veces mayor de abusar de drogas que el resto de los encuestados. No se encontraron asociaciones estadísticamente significativas (< 0.005) entre el reporte de maltrato en ninguna de sus categorías, y el uso o abuso de drogas.

La mayoría de los países miembros de la Organización de los Estados Americanos no tienen un grupo de profesionales con experiencia en investigación y conocimiento científico en drogas y problemas relacionados. Así, la Organización de los Estados Americanos empezó, una asociación, primero con la Universidad de Alberta/Canadá y después con el Centro de Adición y Salud Mental en Toronto/Canadá para capacitar profesionales de áreas relacionadas a la salud para desarrollaren investigaciones sobre el problema de drogas. El programa tiene el objetivo de crear un grupo de profesionales de áreas relacionadas de la salud con conocimiento científico y técnico en investigación para favorecer los avances científicos en el área de reducción de la demanda de drogas. El programa requiere el desarrollo e implementación de una propuesta multicentrica de investigación sobre drogas. El programa tiene producido los siguientes resultados: nueve estudios multicentricos de investigación sobre drogas desarrollados en 22 países de América Latina y Caribe; 91 participantes de 22 países de América Latina y Caribe. Este es el único programa en las Américas que oferta continuamente el entrenamiento en investigación avanzada para profesores universitarios y contribuye para fortalecer los currículos de los cursos de pregrado y post grado en cuestiones sobre drogas y la capacidad de investigación en América Latina y Caribe.

El presente estudio fue una investigación de tipo exploratorio quantitativa. Examina la relación entre el uso de drogas en estudiantes universitarios de una universidad en Bogotá, Colombia y la influencia del grupo de pares, en torno al efecto moderador de factores socio-culturales como las relaciones familiares, el entretenimiento y la espiritualidad en dicho consumo. La muestra non probabilistica fue conformada por 350 estudiantes. El 89,4% de los jóvenes encuestados reportaran que consumen drogas ilícitas y el 82,2% aceptaran la influencia que los pares en este tipo de conductas. Los más altos consumos se presentan en alcohol con un 91,1% y tabaco con un 37,4%, las drogas de más bajo consumo son la cocaína y las anfetaminas. El consumo de drogas en estudiantes presenta índices elevados, y la influencia de los grupos entre los jóvenes es determinante de muchos de sus comportamientos.

Panamá, país de tránsito para productores y consumidores de drogas, generando economía emergente, cultura de violencia y maltrato en la familia y comunidad, siendo niños y adolescentes vulnerables al uso y abuso de drogas por exposición prolongada al maltrato. Se determina independencia o relación entre uso y abuso de droga con el maltrato durante la niñez y la adolescencia en estudiantes en una universidad en la ciudad de Panamá. Se aplicó el método cuantitativo, diseño transeccional, correlacional, muestreo estratificado, muestra de 377 estudiantes de 12 facultades por afijación proporcional. Instrumento aplicado: "Cuestionario Uso de Drogas y Experiencias Adversas de la niñez". La prueba chi-cuadrado, test de independencia, comprobó no independencia entre uso y abuso de drogas posterior al maltrato como abuso sexual, con p-valor asociado 0,021, al 95% nivel de confianza, con significancia de p< de 0,05; determinantes para consumo posterior: madre maltratada, separación o divorcio de padres, pares consumidores.

Este estudio busca clarear la relacion entre las relaciones familiares, la influencia de los pares, la espiritualidad y el uso de drogas en estudiantes de una Universidad en Kingston, Jamaica. Es un estudio de corte transversal utilizando datos cuantitativos de 335 estudiantes del pregrado, utilizando un cuestionario llenado por los estudiantes. La muestra fue compuesta de 335 estudiantes (69% sexo masculino y 31% sexo femenino) entre las idades de 18-24 anos. Los 77.6% de los estudiantes de la muestra informaran ter utilizado drogas en el ano anterior. En Jamaica existen altas tasas de abuso de drogas, lo que remarca la necesidad de comprender los motivadores para el abuso de sustancias. El experimentar maltrato psicológico (abuso emocional y negligencia) durante la infancia ha sido sugerido como un factor de riesgo para el abuso de sustancias. Este estudio investiga la relación entre maltrato psicológico infantil y el abuso de sustancias en la adultez entre estudiantes universitarios jamaiquinos. Trescientos ochenta y dos (382) estudiantes universitarios fueron seleccionados usando una técnica de muestreo sistemático. Ellos completaron el Cuestionario Escala de Distrés Psicológico de Kessler, así como ítems seleccionado de los cuestionarios de Experiencias Adversas en la Infancia y de Uso de Drogas de CICAD. El uso de drogas en nuestra sociedad parece ser una preocupación creciente. De ahí la preocupación de la ES/CICAD y CAMH para patrocinar proyectos de investigación multicéntricos, de los cuales este proyecto forma parte. El uso de drogas es normalmente asociado con grupos de pares y género. Por lo tanto este estudio busco determinar las diferencias de género sobre la influencia de pares en el uso de drogas entre estudiantes de una Universidad en Guayana. Un cuestionario fue aplicado a 263 estudiantes universitarios seleccionados mediante un muestreo intencional. El análisis de datos se realizó mediante el cálculo de la media, los porcentajes, la tabulación cruzada, el test "t" y la correlación de Spearman. El uso de drogas en hombres y mujeres fue mínimo. Las diferencias de género no fueron significantes para el nivel de influencia de género. El uso de drogas fue significativo en el uso de drogas ilícitas y su relación con la influencia de pares y el uso de drogas.

La sintomatología depresiva es prevalente durante la adolescencia, pero no todos los adolescentes experimentan el mismo nivel y evolución de esta sintomatología, lo que sugiere la necesidad de identificar diferencias en las trayectorias de los síntomas. Usando Growth Mixture Modeling analizamos diferentes trayectorias de síntomas depresivos en 1.072 adolescentes chilenos (12-15 años, 54% mujeres, NSE diverso). Primero, se seleccionó un modelo basal y luego se utilizó la irritabilidad del adolescente, la calidez, demanda y falta de respeto de la madre como predictores de la pertenencia a las clases. Se seleccionó un modelo con cuatro clases latentes de síntomas depresivos: alta persistente (12%), baja estable (56%), decreciente (15%) y creciente (17%). La clase baja estable fue la más prevalente y se caracterizó por alto nivel de calidez maternal y bajo nivel de falta de respeto materna e irritabilidad del adolescente, en tanto que la clase alta persistente presentó características opuestas (baja calidez y alta demanda materna e irritabilidad del adolescente). Se observaron diferencias en la prevalencia de clases por sexo. Estos resultados resaltan la importancia de identificar diferentes trayectorias de síntomas depresivos y sus predictores. La asociación entre las dimensiones parentales y las trayectorias de síntomas depresivos persistentes provee evidencia de que los comportamientos parentales pueden servir, tanto como factores protectores como de riesgo.

El objetivo del estudio fue examinar la relación entre el uso y abuso de drogas y maltrato durante la niñez en estudiantes de una universidad de la ciudad de San Salvador, El Salvador. La investigación fue exploratoria, con un diseño transversal, siendo la muestra de 272 estudiantes. Como resultado se obtuvo que el 43% (118) de los estudiantes afirmaron haber consumido drogas alguna vez en su vida; las drogas de mayor consumo en los últimos 12 meses fueron el alcohol, el cannabis y el tabaco, con prevalencias del 14% (38), 9.3% (26) y 7% (19) respectivamente. El abuso físico y el abuso verbal fueron los dos tipos de maltrato más frecuentes; el tener amigos que consuman drogas es un factor de riesgo. Adicionalmente existe una relación directa y significativa (< 0.005) entre el uso y abuso de drogas y maltrato físico durante la niñez.

Investigación cuantitativa de tipo descriptiva-exploratoria, con diseño transversal que examinó el efecto moderador de ciertos factores socio-culturales en el consumo de drogas licitas entre estudiantes universitarios de una universidad en Kingston, Jamaica. La muestra non probabilistica fue conformada por 335 estudiantes de una universidad especifica de Kingston, Jamaica. Fue elaborado un cuestionario con cinco escalas ya validadas, que interrogaba sobre la influencia del grupo de pares, las relaciones familiares, el entretenimiento, la espiritualidad y el consumo de drogas. Se utilizó el programa SPSS versión 18 para el análisis estadística. Los datos indicaran que los respondientes con uno o mas anmigos que estaban involucrados con el uso de drogas eran 9.5 veces mas disponibles para fumar y dos veces mas para consumir alcole. Los respondientes que tinian baja espiritualidad eran dos veces mas proponientes para fumar y 1.3 veces mas proponientes de consumir alcole. Los datos indicaran haber asociacion significante entre los factores sociales y el consume de drogas licitas.

Esta investigación examina la relación entre el uso de drogas en estudiantes de una Universidad Pública en Villavicencio, Colombia, y su relación con el maltrato durante la niñez, utilizando como referente teórico la perspectiva bioecológica. Estudio exploratorio retrospectivo, con una muestra de 313 estudiantes de pregrado. El 10.2% de los encuestados refiere haber sido maltratado en la Infancia y la violencia de mayor uso fue la violencia física seguida de la violencia psicológica. El 56.9% de las estudiantes encuestados han consumido sustancias psicoactivas en algún momento de la vida, y su inicio entre los 13 y los 18 años. Se evidencia maltrato en la infancia con manifestaciones de agresiones físicas, al igual que el consumo de sustancias psicoactivas, pero no se observa una relación estadísticamente significativa entre maltrato durante la infancia y el consumo de sustancias psicoactivas en la muestra estudiada.

Investigación exploratoria que pretendió examinar la asociación entre el maltrato durante la niñez y el uso y abuso de drogas entre los estudiantes de una Universidad en León, Nicaragua. Mediante la aplicación de un cuestionario auto-administrado se obtuvo que el 51.6% de los participantes eran de sexo femenino y el 95.6% se encontraban en las edades de 18 y 24 años. El 22.8% tuvo la percepción de haber sido maltratados durante su infancia. Un 9.0% reportó abuso sexual, en su mayoría del sexo femenino. El 50% habían consumido algún tipo de droga (licita/ilícita) alguna vez en su vida. Mediante un análisis del Chi Cuadrado se encontró que el abuso sexual está relacionado con el uso de drogas significativamente (χ12=7.49) (p=0.00).

La investigación tuvo como objetivo aclarar la relación entre la espiritualidad , el sexo y el consumo de drogas entre los estudiantes de pregrado de una universidad en Barbados . Una muestra por cuotas de 250 estudiantes fue requerido por la Facultad de Ciencias Sociales como el estudio fue parte de un estudio multicéntrico grande que participen estudiantes de la Facultad de Ciencias Sociales de otros siete países participantes de América Latina y el Caribe . Relaciones negativas significativas fueron encontradas entre el nivel de un estudiante de la espiritualidad y de su uso de drogas lícitas e ilícitas en los últimos 12 y tres meses . Hombres y mujeres también difieren significativamente en términos de consumo de drogas ilícitas (últimos 12 y tres meses) . Sin embargo no se encontraron diferencias de género en su relación con el uso de drogas lícitas . Por otra parte , las mujeres poseían niveles significativamente más altos de espiritualidad que sus homólogos masculinos . Además la investigación cualitativa debe llevarse a cabo dentro de este grupo de edad en el contexto de Barbados para explicar mejor estos hallazgos .
