Abstract

We prove that the word problem in an Artin group G based on a diagram without A_3 or B_3 subdiagrams can be solved using a system of length preserving rewrite rules which, together with free reduction, can be used to reduce any word over the standard generators of G to a geodesic word in G in quadratic time. This result builds on work of Holt and Rees, and of Blasco-Garc\'ia, Cumplido and Morris-Wright. Abstract

We generalize the retractions to standard parabolic subgroups for even Artin groups to FC-type Artin groups and other more general families. We prove that these retractions uniquely extend to any parabolic subgroup. We use retractions to generalize the results of Antol\'in and Foniqi that reduce the problem of intersection of parabolic subgroups to weaker conditions. We give a short proof for the fact, already proven by Thomas Haettel, that the arbitrary intersection of parabolic subgroups in Euclidean Braid groups $A[\tilde{A}_n]$ is again a parabolic subgroup. Abstract

Abstract Nucleotide-pyrophosphatases/phosphodiesterases (NPP/PDE) are membrane or secreted Zn2+-metallohydrolases of nucleoside-5´-monophosphate derivatives. They hydrolyze, for instance, ATP and 4-nitrophenyl-dTMP, and belong to the ecto-nucleotide pyrophosphatase/phosphodiesterase (ENPP) family that contains seven members (ENPP1-ENPP7). Earlier we had shown that an NPP/PDE activity solubilized and partially purified from rat liver membranes is inactivated by EDTA in a time-dependent fashion, an effect enhanced by glycine and blocked by the 4-nitrophenyl-dTMP. Here, we extended this observation to other free amino acids. Activity assays started after different incubation lengths with EDTA provided first-order, apparent inactivation constants (ki(ap)). With the exception of cysteine (a strong inhibitor) and histidine (itself evoking a time-dependent inactivation), free amino acids themselves did not affect activity but increased ki(ap). The results are compatible with a conformational change of NPP/PDE evoked by interaction with free amino acids. The enzyme preparation was analyzed to identify what ENPP family members were present. First, the hydrolytic activity on 2´,3´-cGAMP was assayed because until very recently ENPP1 was the only mammalian enzyme known to display it. 2´,3´-cGAMP hydrolase activity was clearly detected, but mass spectrometry data obtained by LC-MS/MS gave evidence that only rat Enpp3, Enpp4 and Enpp5 were present with low abundance. This finding coincided in time with a recent publication claiming that mouse Enpp3 hydrolyzes 2´,3´-cGAMP, and that Enpp1 and Enpp3 account for all the 2´,3´-cGAMP hydrolase activity in mice. So, our results are confirmatory of Enpp3 activity towards 2´,3´-cGAMP. Finally, the effect of amino acids could be relevant to NPP/PDE actions dependent on protein-protein interactions, like the known insulin-related effects of ENPP1 and possibly ENPP3.

Abstract

Abstract Background Literature suggests colonic resection and primary anastomosis (RPA) instead of Hartmann’s procedure (HP) for the treatment of left-sided colonic emergencies. We aim to evaluate the surgical options globally used to treat patients with acute left-sided colonic emergencies and the factors that leading to the choice of treatment, comparing HP and RPA. Methods This is a prospective, international, multicenter, observational study registered on ClinicalTrials.gov. A total 1215 patients with left-sided colonic emergencies who required surgery were included from 204 centers during the period of March 1, 2020, to May 31, 2020. with a 1-year follow-up. Results 564 patients (43.1%) were females. The mean age was 65.9 ± 15.6 years. HP was performed in 697 (57.3%) patients and RPA in 384 (31.6%) cases. Complicated acute diverticulitis was the most common cause of left-sided colonic emergencies (40.2%), followed by colorectal malignancy (36.6%). Abstract

We report the first record of Pontoporia blainvillei (Gervais & d’Orbigny, 1844), Franciscana or La Plata River Dolphin, along the coast of Arraial do Cabo, southeastern Brazil. On 8 October 2017, a newborn was stranded in the surf zone of Prainha Beach and was returned to the sea. Although an occasional record, fills a distribution gap of the species’ occurrence on the coast of Rio de Janeiro state and, consequently, helps clarify the distribution pattern of P. blainvillei along the coast of the Brazil.

Abstract

We give a quadratic-time explicit and computable algorithm to solve the word problem for Artin groups that do not contain any relations of length 3. Furthermore, we prove that, given two geodesic words representing the same element, one can obtain one from the other by using a set of homogeneous relations that never increase the word length., Comment: 30 pages, 2 figures. Abstract

Purpose: the purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety and usability of the ATLAS 2030 in children with Cerebral Palsy (CP) and Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). Materials and Methods: the sample consisted of six children, three with CP and three with SMA, who received eight sessions of robot-assisted gait therapy. Safety was measured by the presence of adverse events. Usability was measured by spatiotemporal parameters, the Six-Minute Walking Test (6MWT), and the time needed for donning and doffing, as well as satisfaction questionnaires administered to therapists and patients. Results: no serious adverse events were reported. The average cadence and number of steps per session increased throughout sessions, as well as the distance covered in the 6MWT, both in participants with CP and SMA. The mean donning time at the end of the study was 4.6 ± 1.3 min, and only one therapist was necessary to carry out all of the sessions. Satisfaction was considered high by both children and therapists. Conclusions: the ATLAS 2030 was shown to be safe for children with CP and SMA. The usability of the device was good, since a progression in the spatiotemporal parameters was observed throughout the sessions, and patient and therapist satisfaction were high.

Abstract

Introduction Programmes for older people aimed at increasing physical activity (PA) and reducing sedentary behaviour (SB) traditionally focus on achieving functional and health improvements. Focusing on enjoyment and social inclusion could strengthen adherence and help reach older people with social disadvantages. The aim of this study is to assess the feasibility and acceptability of the Join4Joy approach in PA programmes and its assessment tools.Methods and analysis A multicentric, pragmatic, pre-post feasibility study using mixed methods will be conducted. The intervention will consist of a PA programme boosting enjoyment and social inclusion, grounded on a co-creation process. Trainers will offer twelve, 1-hour weekly sessions of structured, supervised, group-based PA. Participants will be encouraged to increase activity in daily living. 144 older people will be recruited from the community and nursing homes in Spain, Denmark, Italy, Germany, and France. Additionally, participants and trainers will be invited to join virtual communities of practice to share their experiences across settings and countries. Qualitative procedures will be used to explore the acceptability of the design via interviews and focus groups with participants and trainers. Quantitative methods will be used to assess uptake, adherence, retention, reach, satisfaction, enjoyment (PACES questionnaire), physical function (e.g., Short Physical Performance Battery), quality of life (EQ-5D-5L scale), perceived improvement (Patient Global Impression of Improvement scale-I), activities of daily living (Barthel index) and SB and PA patterns (IPAQ and accelerometry). The degree and type of participation in virtual communities of practice will also be assessed. SPSS software will be used for the analysis of quantitative variables. Qualitative data will be analysed using reflective thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke (2006).Ethics and dissemination A favourable report by the Research Ethics Committee of UVic-UCC (282/2023) was obtained on 26 June 26th, 2023. Participation and withdrawal will be voluntary. Participants’ (or their legal guardians’, when necessary) written permission will be required. Abstract

Abstract Intraspecific variation in plants is expected to have profound impacts on the arthropod communities associated with them. Because sexual dimorphism in plants is expected to provide consistent variation among individuals of the same species, researchers have often studied the effect it has on associated arthropods. Nevertheless, most studies have focused on the effect of sexual dimorphism in a single or a few herbivores, thus overlooking the potential effects on the whole arthropod community. Our main objective was to evaluate effects of Buddleja cordata's plant‐sex on its associated arthropod community. We surveyed 13 pairs of male and female plants every 2 months during a year (June 2010 to April 2011). Every sampling date, we measured plant traits (water content and leaf thickness), herbivory, and the arthropod community. We did not find differences in herbivory between plant sex or through time. However, we found differences in water content through time, with leaf water‐content matching the environmental seasonality. For arthropod richness, we found 68 morphospecies associated with female and 72 with male plants, from which 53 were shared by both sexes. We did not observe differences in morphospecies richness; however, we found sex‐associated differences in the diversity of all species and differences on the diversity of the most abundant species with an interesting temporal component. During peak flowering season, male plants showed higher values on both parameters, but during the peak fructification season female plants showed the higher values on both diversity parameters. Our research exemplifies the interaction between plant‐phenology and plant‐sex as drivers of arthropod communities' diversity, even when plant sexual‐dimorphism is inconspicuous, and highlighting the importance of accounting for seasonal variation. We stress the need of conducting more studies that test this time‐dependent framework in other dioecious systems, as it has the potential to reconcile previous contrasting observations reported in the literature.

30. The conjugacy stability problem for parabolic subgroups in Artin groups

Abstract

Given an Artin group $A$ and a parabolic subgroup $P$, we study if every two elements of $P$ that are conjugate in $A$, are also conjugate in $P$. We provide an algorithm to solve this decision problem if $A$ satisfies three properties that are conjectured to be true for every Artin group. We partially solve the problem if $A$ has $FC$-type, and we totally solve it if $A$ is isomorphic to a free product of spherical Artin groups. Abstract

Background and Objectives: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most frequent arrhythmia and the main cause of hospital admissions for cardioembolic stroke. The SIMETAP research project aims to update the prevalence rates of cardiovascular, renal, or metabolic factors and to evaluate their respective associations with factors that could be related. The present study aims to assess the AF prevalence rates in an adult population and its association with cardiovascular–kidney–metabolic (CKM) factors. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional observational study was conducted in a primary care setting, with a population-based random sample of 6588 people aged 18.0–102.8 years. Crude and adjusted prevalence rates of AF were calculated. The associations of CKM factors with AF were assessed using bivariate and multivariate analysis. Results: The age- and sex-adjusted prevalence rates of AF were 2.9% in the overall adult population, 6.1% in the population aged ≥50 years, and 12.9% in the population aged ≥70 years, with no significant differences by sex. AF prevalence in the population under 50 years of age barely reached 1‰. Heart failure (HF), hypertension, chronic kidney disease (CKD), stroke, low HDL-cholesterol, and prediabetes were independent CKM factors associated with AF in the overall population, as were the same factors, except prediabetes, in the population ≥50 years old (p < 0.001). High or very high vascular risk was present in 92.4% [95% CI: 89.1–95.7]) of the population with AF. Conclusions: The adjusted prevalence rate of AF in the population aged 50 years or older was 6.1%, twice that of the overall adult population and half that of the population aged 70 years or older. The main independent CKM factors associated with AF were HF, stroke, CKD, hypertension, and low HDL-cholesterol.

Abstract

Abstract The microbiota in humans and animals play crucial roles in defense against pathogens and offer a promising natural source for immunomodulatory products. However, the development of physiologically relevant model systems and protocols for testing such products remains challenging. In this study, we present an experimental condition where various natural products derived from the registered lactic acid bacteria Ligilactobacillus salivarius CECT 9609, known for their immunomodulatory activity, were tested. These products included live and inactivated bacteria, as well as fermentation products at different concentrations and culture times. Using our established model system, we observed no morphological changes in the airway epithelium upon exposure to Pasteurella multocida, a common respiratory pathogen. However, early molecular changes associated with the innate immune response were detected through transcript analysis. By employing diverse methodologies ranging from microscopy to next-generation sequencing (NGS), we characterized the interaction of these natural products with the airway epithelium and their potential beneficial effects in the presence of P. multocida infection. In particular, our discovery highlights that among all Ligilactobacillus salivarius CECT 9609 products tested, only inactivated cells preserve the conformation and morphology of respiratory epithelial cells, while also reversing or altering the natural immune responses triggered by Pasteurella multocida. These findings lay the groundwork for further exploration into the protective role of these bacteria and their derivatives.

Abstract

Summary: Background: Neuroimaging-based brain-age delta has been shown to be a mediator linking cardiovascular risk factors to cognitive function. We aimed to assess the mediating role of brain-age delta in the association between modifiable risk factors of dementia and longitudinal cognitive decline in middle-aged and older individuals who are asymptomatic, stratified by Alzheimer's disease pathology. We also explored whether the mediation effect is specific to cognitive domain. Methods: In this cohort study, we included participants from the ALFA+ cohort aged between 45 years and 65 years who were cognitively unimpaired and who had available structural MRI, cerebrospinal fluid β-amyloid (Aβ)42 and Aβ40 measurements obtained within 1 year of each other, modifiable risk factors assessment, and cognitive evaluation over 3 years. Participants were recruited from the Barcelonaβeta Brain Research Center (Barcelona, Spain). Included individuals underwent a first assessment between Oct 25, 2016, and Jan 28, 2020, and a follow-up cognitive assessment 3·28 (SD 0·27) years later. We computed brain-age delta and composites of different cognitive function domains (preclinical Alzheimer's cognitive composite [PACC], attention, executive function, episodic memory, visual processing, and language). We used partial least squares path modelling to explore mediation effects in the associations between modifiable risk factors (including cardiovascular, mental health, mood, metabolic or endocrine history, and alcohol use) and changes in cognitive composites. To assess the role of Alzheimer's disease pathology, we computed separate models for Aβ-negative and Aβ-positive individuals. Findings: Of the 419 participants enrolled in ALFA+, 302 met our inclusion criteria, of which 108 participants were classified as Aβ-positive and 194 as Aβ-negative. In Aβ-positive individuals, brain-age delta partially mediated (percent mediation proportion 15·73% [95% CI 14·22–16·66]) the association between modifiable risk factors and decline in overall cognition (across cognitive domains). Brain-age delta fully mediated (mediation proportion 28·03% [26·25–29·21]) the effect of modifiable risk factors on the PACC, wherein increased values for risk factors correlated with an older brain-age delta, and, consequently, an older brain-age delta was linked to greater PACC decline. This effect appears to be primarily driven by memory decline. Mediation was not significant in Aβ-negative individuals (3·52% [0·072–4·17]) on PACC, although path coefficients were not significantly different from those in the Aβ-positive group. Interpretation: Our findings suggest that brain-age delta captures the association between modifiable risk factors and longitudinal cognitive decline in middle-aged and older people. In asymptomatic middle-aged and older individuals who are Aβ-positive, the pathology might be the strongest driver of cognitive decline, whereas the effect of risk factors is smaller. Our results highlight the potential of brain-age delta as an objective outcome measure for preventive lifestyle interventions targeting cognitive decline. Abstract

We show that the geometric realisation of the poset of proper parabolic subgroups of a large-type Artin group has a systolic geometry. We use this geometry to show that the set of parabolic subgroups of a large-type Artin group is stable under arbitrary intersections and forms a lattice for the inclusion. As an application, we show that parabolic subgroups of large-type Artin groups are stable under taking roots and we completely characterise the parabolic subgroups that are conjugacy stable. We present a generalization of the Dehornoy-Brin braided Thompson group $BV_2$ that uses recursive braids. Our new groups are denoted by $BV_{n,r}(H)$, for all $n\geq 2,r\geq 1$ and $H \leq \mathcal{B}_n$, where $\mathcal{B}_n$ is the braid group on $n$ strands. Abstract

The PhD project of title "Agronomy and Economics of two novel energy crops: Sida hermaphrodita (L.) Rusby and Silphium perfoliatum L." was first conceptualised within the international project SidaTim. The main aim of the PhD was to reduce the uncertainty associated with the adoption of Sida hermaphrodita (L.) Rusby and Silphium perfoliatum L., through data gathering and evaluating their agronomic, economic and environmental performance. The main objectives of the PhD were: to review all available information and publications regarding the cultivation and energy production of the two species; to assess their agronomic performance in the UK; to examine the impact of their establishment on soil carbon; to determine their profitability against other potential crops across a European gradient; and to evaluate the greenhouse gas emissions associated with their cultivation. The novelty of the research lies on the establishment and assessment of two novel bioenergy crops in the UK compared across a range of climatic conditions, addressing the knowledge gaps regarding reliability and availability of information and assessment of their agronomic, economic and environmental performance. The first year of the project was dedicated to background research, collecting and processing the first set of soil analyses, producing all Silphium perfoliatum (L.) seedlings from seed, importing Sida hermaphrodita (L.) Rusby seeds from Germany, and in 2017 establishing an experimental site in Silsoe, Bedfordshire, UK. During the first three years,the mean maximum height of Sida hermaphrodita (L.) Rusby originated from seedlings was 198 cm and the maximum stem diameters were 14-18 mm. The mean maximum height of Silphium perfoliatum (L.) was 158 cm over three years and the maximum stem diameters were 14-16 mm. As opposed to the expected increase in maximum heights and diameters with time until plantation maturity, an overall reduction in maximum heights and diameters was recorded with time for Sida hermaphrodita (L.) Rusby, whilst only maximum diameters of Silphium perfoliatum (L.) decreased with time. Each year from February 2018, a winter harvest to measure the solid biomass production of Sida hermaphrodita (L.) Rusby and a summer harvest to measure the green biomass production of both Sida hermaphrodita (L.) Rusby and Silphium perfoliatum L. were carried out until September 2020. Mean dry biomass yields of Sida hermaphrodita (L.) Rusby plants grown from transplants for solid fuel for combustion were 1.7, 5.4, and 3.7 t DM ha⁻¹ in 2018, 2019, and 2020 respectively. Green biomass yields of Sida hermaphrodita (L.) Rusby for anaerobic digestion were on average 10.8, 8.1, 6.0 t DM ha⁻¹ in 2018, 2019, and 2020 respectively. The recorded declines in harvested biomass from Sida hermaphrodita (L.) Rusby are attributed to the combined effect of plant mortality, management and fertilisation practices. The corresponding mean green biomass yields of Silphium perfoliatum L. for anaerobic digestion were 4.6, 6.7, 8.9 t DM ha⁻¹ in 2018, 2019, and 2020. The second and third year focussed on objectives three and four, as well as collecting and processing the second set of soil analyses, data analysis, and writing up. The bulk density of the soil across 0-5 cm and 10-15 cm changed from 1.4-1.7 g cm³ prior to cultivation in 2017, to a uniform 1.4 g cm³ in 2020. The concentration of soil organic carbon at 0-5 cm decreased from 2.58% in 2017 to 1.85% in 2020, whereas at 10-15 cm, it increased from 1.86% to 2.12% over the three years. Overall, the mean soil organic carbon stocks (0-15 cm) declined from 65.0-67.6 t C ha⁻¹ in 2017 in 55.2-58.3 t C ha⁻¹ in 2020. The profitability of Sida hermaphrodita (L.) Rusby and Silphium perfoliatum (L.) was predicted over a rotation of 16 years and compared to that of an arable rotation and two other energy crops for the particular case of the UK and three other European countries. The calculated net present value (NPV) of Sida hermaphrodita (L.) Rusby was -1,591 £ ha⁻¹ without subsidies and 1,075 £ ha⁻¹ with subsidies; the corresponding net present values for Silphium perfoliatum (L.) were 3,031 £ ha⁻¹ and 5,607 £ ha⁻¹ . The study also calculated how much prices and costs would need to change for the NPV of the two crops to match the NPV of the most profitable energy crop or the arable rotation. Using an Excel model developed based on the IPCC guidelines, the greenhouse gas emissions for Sida hermaphrodita (L.) Rusby and Silphium perfoliatum (L.) production were calculated for a 16-year period. On a per annum basis, overall greenhouse gas emissions were estimated respectively at 4.2, 0.3, 2.2, -4.0 and -0.6 t CO2 eq ha⁻¹ for the arable rotation, short rotation coppice, Miscanthus, Sida hermaphrodita (L.) Rusby and Silphium perfoliatum (L.) systems. The environmental assessment demonstrated that cultivating Sida hermaphrodita (L.) Rusby and Silphium perfoliatum (L.) could potentially contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

El artículo estudia un grupo escultórico perdido y recuperado, El grito de Independencia, modelado por Antonio Susillo en 1884. Una vez identificado, el trabajo plantea el estudio de la obra a través de las fuentes, y los análisis compositivo, morfológico, formal y estilístico, dilucidando la relación entre la aportación literaria del poeta decimonónico Bernardo López García y las correspondencias formales de un escultor procedente del realismo desarrollado en París por Carpeaux e inmerso en las tendencias más avanzadas de su tiempo. La recuperación de la escultura supone una importante aportación a un escultor tan valorado como carente de estudios sistemáticos.
