1. Efficacy of a Smartphone App Intervention for Reducing Caregiver Stress: Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract

BackgroundCaregivers play a pivotal role in maintaining an economically viable health care system, yet they are characterized by low levels of psychological well-being and consistently report unmet needs for psychological support. Mobile app–based (mobile health [mHealth]) interventions present a novel approach to both reducing stress and improving well-being. ObjectiveThis study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of a self-guided mobile app–based psychological intervention for people providing care to family or friends with a physical or mental disability. MethodsIn a randomized, single-blind, controlled trial, 183 caregivers recruited through the web were randomly allocated to either an intervention (n=73) or active control (n=110) condition. The intervention app contained treatment modules combining daily self-monitoring with third-wave (mindfulness-based) cognitive-behavioral therapies, whereas the active control app contained only self-monitoring features. Both programs were completed over a 5-week period. It was hypothesized that intervention app exposure would be associated with decreases in depression, anxiety, and stress, and increases in well-being, self-esteem, optimism, primary and secondary control, and social support. Outcomes were assessed at baseline, postintervention, and 3-4 months postintervention. App quality was also assessed. ResultsIn total, 25% (18/73) of the intervention participants were lost to follow-up at 3 months, and 30.9% (34/110) of the participants from the wait-list control group dropped out before the postintervention survey. The intervention group experienced reductions in stress (b=−2.07; P=.04) and depressive symptoms (b=−1.36; P=.05) from baseline to postintervention. 42. Moderating Effects of Support on the Consequences of Psychological Distress.

Abstract

Numerous studies have established a relation between negative life events and psychological and physical health, however, these studies have focused on the consequences of life stress of psychological and physical functioning. The possibility that individuals may experience negative life events due to preexisting emotional dysfunctioning is recognized by several authors but has received little research attention. This study investigated the effects of prior symptoms on the experience of negative events and the role of received support in moderating this relation. Business administration students (N=120) completed questionnaires focusing on social support, daily hassles, and psychiatric symptoms. These results suggest that there is a mutually causative, reciprocal relationship between stressful events and distress and that models concerning the role of social support may need to consider the effect of support in coping with distress as well as with stress (negative events). Although the results indicated that received social support moderated the relationship between distress and negative events, support did not buffer the effects of distress but instead enhanced it. This later finding is consistent with previous research, which found that the mobilization of support (received support rather than perceived availability of support) represents an admission of the inability to cope. 43. Self Esteem Support as a Moderator of the Impact of Job Stress.

Abstract

Many studies on occupational stress have examined the buffering effects on stress of different variables. This study hypothesized that self-esteem support would buffer the effects of job stress on depressive symptoms. Subjects were 131 business administration students who were also permanently employed. Subjects completed questionnaires three times with a one-month period between administrations. The reassurance of social worth scale from the Social Provision Scale and the revised Daily Hassles Scale were completed at time 2, along with other items. Also completed at times 2 and 3 was a 10-item scale measuring depressive symptoms. Results of a regression analysis indicated that the job stress x self-esteem support interaction significantly predicted later depressive symptoms, with prior depressive symptoms partialled. The findings are supportive of the hypothesis that self-esteem support buffers the impact of job stress, and imply that type of support, rather than amount or source of support may be the important factor in determining the impact of support on job stress.
