Abstract Objective This study examined the impact of a short-term study abroad program, focusing on program evaluation, attendee satisfaction, and acquired knowledge and skills. A questionnaire survey was conducted covering various aspects including demographics, program evaluation, and feedback. Results Results indicated higher female participation due to gender imbalances in pharmacy students in Egypt, with senior students recognizing the value of international experience. Field visits and workshops provided valuable experiential learning, with attendees suggesting extending the program’s duration. The program equipped attendees with knowledge and skills relevant to pharmaceutical products and services, leading to improved competences and perceptions. The study concludes that such study abroad experiences profoundly impact personal growth and recommends integrating them into educational curricula for valuable experiences.

Abstract With the rapid development of technology and media, people’s experiences of other cultures have shifted from direct only to a combination of direct and virtual experiences. This study investigated how global consumers directly and indirectly experience other cultures, mediated by YouTube. It focused on the consumer experience of the Korean traditional costume, the Hanbok. YouTube content focusing on Hanbok experiences was collected to understand the direct Hanbok experiences, while viewers’ reactions to YouTube content (i.e., views, likes, and comments) were collected to understand indirect Hanbok experiences. The analysis involved two steps. First, the latent Dirichlet allocation topic modeling algorithm in Python was used to extract topics from direct and indirect Hanbok experiences. Second, simple regression analysis was conducted using numerical data derived from textual data through linguistic inquiry and word count to examine the relationship between direct Hanbok experiences via YouTube and viewer engagement as an indicator of indirect Hanbok experiences. The results showed that YouTubers’ Hanbok experiences were categorized into seven topics, namely novelty, sensory, daily, cultural, trial, pleasing, and intellectual experiences. Indirect Hanbok experiences were identified based on dimensions of consumer engagement, such as social, cognitive, learning, behavioral, and affective engagement. The regression analysis results revealed that cultural and affective Hanbok experiences significantly impacted consumer engagement. This study expanded the scope of research by exploring indirect cultural experiences mediated by a media platform.

Consistent with global trends in cultural tourism, museum tourism has emerged as a popular form of cultural tourism that has increasingly drawn the significant attention of scholars as the target of academic research. The tourists' cultural experience can affect their evaluation of the specific visit and subsequent behavior. While previous researchers have paid more attention to the mechanism of visitors' post-visit behaviors, cultural transmission as a dependent variable has received scarce attention. This study examines factors influencing college students' behavior in communicating specific museum cultural content after a visit. It also identifies the mediating mechanism underlying the relationships between cultural transmission and its antecedents. The purposive questionnaire in a highly structured survey was distributed online among college students. A total of 195 usable responses were drawn. A quantitative survey methodology was employed, including Chi-square analysis, Confirmatory Factor Analysis, and Structural Equation Modeling. The results show that: (1) the determinants of college students' cultural transmission behavior are cultural experience, cultural identity, and satisfaction, which explains 59% of the variance of cultural transmission; (2) the impact of cultural experience on cultural transmission was mediated by cultural identity and satisfaction (it includes a serial mediation effect as the effect of cultural experience on satisfaction flowed through cultural identity, where student satisfaction mediated the impact of cultural identity on cultural transmission); and (3) college students pursuing the liberal arts present statistically different preferences in visiting museums when compared with science and engineering students. The discussion and implications present theoretical advancements in elucidating the mechanism of visitors' cultural communication processes and recommend the use of technology-driven innovations for improvements in post-visit activities for cultural transmission. With the rapid development of digital tourism, more and more tourists are embracing this innovative mode of tourism. Digital tourism has attracted a large influx of tourists, which not only promotes the dissemination of local culture, but also promotes tourists’ intention to preserve culture. This study proposes a comprehensive framework authenticity, cultural experience, place attachment, satisfaction, and cultural protection intention, aiming to explore tourists’ cultural protection intention in digital tourism. To validate our framework, we use the Digital Intelligence Niushou as a case study and distributed a questionnaire to tourists, obtaining 408 valid responses. We analyzed the collected data using structural equation modeling (SEM). The results showed that place attachment and the four cultural experiences positively influenced both visitors’ satisfaction and cultural protection intention. Notably, “scientific knowledge” and “personal values” emerged as the biggest influences on cultural protection intention. Among the three types of authenticity, only objective authenticity and constructed authenticity positively influenced tourists’ satisfaction and cultural protection intention. This suggests that faithfully restored historical contexts play a key role in shaping tourists’ experiences and attitudes toward cultural protection in the field of digital tourism. This study provides a solid theoretical foundation for advancing digital tourism and enhancing tourists’ commitment to preserving cultural heritage. Our findings are important for digital tourism platforms to develop more effective optimization strategies, and can help managers to create more attractive, authentic and immersive tourism models to enhance tourist satisfaction and cultivate cultural protection intention.

This paper aims to explore the impact of virtual reality and contemporary visual design on non-traditional culture. In this paper, we use virtual reality technology to transform the semantics of visual design interaction, process the visual design into a sparse matrix, and score the eigenvalues in the matrix to form a propagation field screening process for complete automated analysis, a way to build a visual design platform. A questionnaire survey was used to investigate the impact of visual effects of virtualization of non-heritage culture and the current demand for modern virtual reality-based cultural experiences, and a structural equation approach was used to empirically prove the impact of virtualization of non-heritage culture on the sense of experience, on emotional and cognitive responses, emotional involvement, pleasure level and willingness to experience. Before the VR experience, people’s knowledge of NRM culture was about 60%, but after the experience, their knowledge of NRM culture reached more than 80%. For example, the knowledge of traditional skills of NRM culture was only 60%, but after the experience, the knowledge reached 90%; the satisfaction with the NRM culture experience also increased from 60% to 80%. The virtualization of NRM culture gives the experience good visual enjoyment and completes a magnificent transformation of the traditional cultural experience.

Abstract This article defines "cultural experience" and places it in a holistic conceptual model; “the cultural city” where it plays a relevant role in improving the performing of cities. The conceptual model combines the basic elements of the heritage city, the smart city and the creative city. The city is interpreted from a threefold perspective; as a repository of resources, as a connective interface, and as the setting for citizens' life and social and professional experiences. In this context, each of these perspectives incorporates culture in a different way, enabling different models of value creation and different processes of production and reproduction of this value. In each of the urban models described above, production processes that combine symbolic, physical, financial, social, human and cultural capital in different ways and urban strategies are implemented to provide cultural experiences that ignite transformative effects through several spillovers. That means that culture, in its different dimensions, regains the role of a raw material and becomes the point of origin to activate development processes and improve urban performance. The integration of the dimensions of the heritage city, the creative city and the smart city through an enabling context is the core proposal of the “cultural city”. In alignment with the New European Agenda for Culture, we deepen the analysis in the specific spillovers on wellbeing and quality of life, citizen engagement and urban renewal as the backbone of a set of external effects of cultural experiences. In the final part of this article, we test the plausibility of this speculative proposal through some empirical evidence. We develop an OLS model with proxy indicators, that could be considered transitional indicators, for the three different potential strategies (heritage, smart, creative). The findings support the assertion that it is conceivable that the supply of cultural experiences through a variety of tactics (heritage city, smart city and creative city) can account in part for the growth of European cities in the years after the 2008 financial crisis. These strategies have contributed to the good performance of the urban device in a way that is positive, not negligible (accounting for around 50% of the variance in productivity) and statistically significant. The provision of a context that increases the cultural experiences for citizens has clearly improved the performance of European cities, and we develop some conceptual and empirical mechanisms to explain and measure the socioeconomic impacts of these processes.

The recent digital era has brought a disruptive impact to the conventional cultural practices. This may take the form of printed media-based learning materials that have been widely and recently used by students who are considered the agents of change in the context of cultural preservation. The Balinese cultural preservation, for instance, is carried out in accordance with the vision of the Governor of Bali, namely Nangun Sat Kerthi Loka Bali, which is intended to lead to a new era of Bali by organizing fundamentally and comprehensively the development of Bali which includes such three main aspects as nature, people, and culture. The cultural preservation includes the cultural knowledge and cultural experience, language(s) as well as reading interest. However, data from the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), suggest that the reading interest of people in Indonesia is significantly low, around 0.01 percent. This means that, out of 10,000 children in Indonesia, only 1 student is quoted as enjoying reading. Therefore, this study aims to describe the increase of both cultural knowledge and cultural experience and students' reading interest in Bali through the digitization of Balinese cultural practices. The digitization of Balinese cultural practices, which applies both virtual reality and ethnographic methods, tends to bring an increase of both cultural knowledge and cultural experience. Interaction ritual (IR) theory has been widely used to analyze ritual interaction (RI) in the tourism sector. Although the literature on this topic is quickly expanding and appealing, it lacks valid conceptualization and a psychometrically sound measurement scale. This study presents the conceptualization of RI and constructs an RI framework based on the literature and focus groups, a combined qualitative and quantitative design, and multisource samples to generate and refine items through five phases. It consists of a four-dimensional 17-item measurement scale with good reliability and validity; the items include contextual elements, ritual symbols, scripted processes, and shared emotions. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the role of wine storytelling as an antecedent in the wine tourism experience, namely on other constructs such as winescape attributes, sensorial attraction, wine excitement and cultural experience. This study analyses the combined use of five wine tourism experience dimensions as well the influence of storytelling as a key antecedent of the wine experience. This study extends existing knowledge by identifying new key drivers which focus on wine tourist behavioural responses within visits to the wine cellars. Data were collected within two wine tourism settings in Madeira and Porto wine cellars, from two convenience samples of 647 international wine tourists. Using partial least square structural equation modelling, the results reveal a direct impact of wine storytelling on the several dimensions of the wine tourism experiences. Furthermore, storytelling was found to directly influence wine excitement, and indirectly both outcome variables (wine excitement and cultural experience), trough the mediating effect of winescape attributes and sensorial attraction. South Africa, a culturally rainbow nation comprising of various cultures. In tourism industry new trends has emerged whereby tourists consume/ experience indigenous cultures. The study presented a unique historical experience in tourism sector. In order to achieve long-term sustainability, South African tourism industry needs focusing on providing more cultural experiences.The study aimed at understanding impact of South African innovative cultures as an emerging trend in tourism industry and revealed how embracing South African cultures can lead to revisit intentions contributing to tourism business growth. Theoretically, the customer satisfaction theory was employed and enhanced understanding of experience development process in tourism sector. Positivism philosophy was used, Hypotheses were deductively tested SEM, Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) tested reliability and validity, random sampling employed to respondents. AMOS and SPSS 25 obtained CFA, path model determining best model fit. Findings indicated a positive relationship in innovative cultures in the Southern African tourism sector.The results indicated that tourists are more interested in experiencing the cultures of their tourism destinations and this will impact the level of satisfaction that they acquire, as well as their overall revisit intention.

Many universities are hosting and enrolling international students as an important aspect of their internationalisation mission of higher education. However, many international students experienced significant problems adjusting into a host culture and social milieu. Informing this qualitative study were 45 international students in a top-tier comprehensive research university in Southeast China. The study focuses on the experience of international students towards the role played by international Fu Da Yuans (Counsellors) in enhancing the students’ cultural and social experiences at the university. The results indicate that the four most significant adjustment issues for international students are the language challenges, social interaction with Chinese students, cultural orientation programmes, and counselling services for international students. Building on the U-Curve adjustment theory (Oberg, 1960), the study revealed the importance of international Fu Da Yuans to provide cultural and social support to international students for easy adjustment into a new culture and social setting. The study bears practical implications to providing international Fu Da Yuans with important insights that can help to create an environment conducive to enhancing the cultural and social experiences of international students.

Let’s imagine a hike on a path in the mounts, dotted by pieces of land art, as a cultural experience sharing similarities with an experience of a museum visit. We address the heritage dimensions of this configuration called "Art on the move" in the Hautes-Alpes Geological Park (France). Then we discover the expectations that prompted the hiker to undertake a visit to these steep sites in which contemporary artists have created in the wild unique works closely related to the landscapes and people of Haute-Provence. Eventually we discuss the effects and memorial echoes of the hike that leads from the Gassendi museum in Digne-les-Bains to the Thermal Baths Art Refuge, a work by Andy Goldsworthy.

The current purpose of many national and international regulations is to ensure accessibility and fruition to the artistic and architectural masterpieces of cultural heritage. The aim of different public institutions or private associations is to allow everyone to discover and appreciate works of art.Understanding the different form of art is very complex especially for a person with a visual disability, who becomes aware of the surrounding reality using predominantly the sense of touch. Disability includes a series of problems that correspond to different solutions for the fruition of cultural heritage. Accessibility is guaranteed for people with motor disabilities by the removal of architectural barriers, for deaf and hard of hearing people by the communication of the insights, for mental disability with laboratory activities. Instead, blindness requires a different approach, as it proposes problems and requires specific operations. Introduction: the Museum of the Mummies of Guanajuato (MUMOG) is one of the most important in Mexico, and is the second source of income for the municipality of Guanajuato: in 2019 received more than 619 thousand visitors, and collected more than 43 million pesos. The objective of this research was to develop a model of second-order structural equations to analyze the relationship between cultural experience and quality of service, through the second order constructs response and experience, taken from the dimensions presented for the cultural experience in the Skot-Hansen (2005) and Linko & Silvanto (2011) model, and for quality of service in the SERVQUAL model. Experience addresses the reflective constructs of entertainment, enlightenment, empowerment, and economic impact. Response is based on the reflective constructs tangible elements, reliability, security, and empathy. Method: this empirical research was conducted as an explanatory, non-experimental and transversal type, with a quantitative approach. The statistical technique of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) is used. For the empirical verification of the proposed model, 392 surveys were carried out among museum goers with an instrument based on the dimensions of cultural experience and quality of service, as well as sociodemographic aspects. Results: response to customer needs does have a positive and significant impact on experience. It is shown that the second-order construct, response, is a reflection of the four dimensions: tangible elements, reliability, security, and empathy. Experience is a reflection of the four dimensions: entertainment, illustration, strengthening and economic impact. Discussion or conclusion: the data analysis allowed to verify the proposed structural model and showed that there is a relationship between the aspects: cultural experience and quality of service studied through its dimensions. The museum must provide a certain level of quality of service so that people value their cultural experience when visiting it. This finding is especially important in the study of museums within the tourism sector since the dark museum has been studied relatively little in Mexico and less in Guanajuato. In addition, the use of SEM provides a modern statistical technique to obtain relevant and reliable information for decision-making by museum stakeholders. This article presents the results of an interdisciplinary research work on the emergence and impact of virtual technologies on the valorization of cultural experience. After reviewing the literature on immersive museography and the concepts of immersion, interaction and social interaction within a cultural experience, we focus our analysis on the drivers of the users’ satisfaction through a three-step research path. Firstly, we realized a preliminary qualitative overview of users’ reactions to virtual environments in a series of selected cultural experiences. Secondly, we designed a model focusing on immersion and social interaction as the two potentially critical drivers of satisfaction. Thirdly, we realized a quantitative study of a project concerning an intangible cultural asset. The results of this study give evidence to the link between immersion and emotion and emphasize the essential mediating role of social interaction. These conclusions are consistent with present technological and market trends, concerning the integration of virtual reality and social networks.

Little is known about our autobiographical memories for cultural events. This represents an opportunity for cultural institutions such as museums, as examination of visitor memories is one way in which they can seek to understand the long-term impact they may have on their visitors. This research applied a coding model developed from autobiographical memory theory to analysis of participants' memories for museum visits, considering the distribution of memories across the life span, types of memories and content. Differences between visitor groups (age, visit frequency) were also considered. Findings showed a strong recency effect in the life-span distribution, suggesting the importance of social sharing in memories of cultural experience. Analysis of content showed a hierarchy of information that was present in museum memories. Knowledge acquired during the event of the visit was important, as was contextualising information whereby visitors situated the memory within their autobiographical knowledge and chronology. Emotions and thoughts were also salient. Visitor differences had minimal impact on content, with the exception of some effects that were consistent with the literature on memory and ageing. This research develops understanding of autobiographical memories for cultural experiences and provides insight to museums, with practical implications in terms of understanding visitors' experiences. This paper presents SemMR, a semantic framework for modelling interactions between human and non-human entities and managing reusable and optimized cultural experiences, towards a shared cultural experience ecosystem that might seamlessly accommodate mixed reality experiences. The SemMR framework synthesizes and integrates interaction data into semantically rich reusable structures and facilitates the interaction between different types of entities in a symbiotic way, within a large, virtual, and fully experiential open world, promoting experience sharing at the user level, as well as data/application interoperability and low-effort implementation at the software engineering level. The proposed semantic framework introduces methods for low-effort implementation and the deployment of open and reusable cultural content, applications, and tools, around the concept of cultural experience as a semantic trajectory or simply, experience as a trajectory (eX-trajectory). The methods facilitate the collection and analysis of data regarding the behaviour of users and their interaction with other users and the environment, towards optimizing eX-trajectories via reconfiguration. The SemMR framework supports the synthesis, enhancement, and recommendation of highly complex reconfigurable eX-trajectories, while using semantically integrated disparate and heterogeneous related data. After the three successive triennial exhibitions of fiber art in Hangzhou, an increasing number of cultural issues and more threads of contemporary art development are to be found in the fiber art field so as to arouse a further exploration. How fiber art intersects public art has drawn a lot of attention. On the third triennial exhibition of fiber art, there is a subtle transition in the narrative of its public characteristics. The artists began to perform their practices in the public spaces in the cultural sense instead of the physical one. The virtualized space is also included. Thus, the concept of the public space is expanded to a different level of understanding. The art practice, therefore becomes a means to motivate the democratic awareness and promote a social reform by addressing the realistic social issues and changing the access restrictions to the public space. This article deals with cognitive aspects of artistic translation based on the example of translations of Herta Müller’s oeuvre into Polish and Czech. The reader of Herta Müller’s novels in translation seeks to get to know / acquaint onself with otherness in / through translation, which will be familiar to him or her in a manner consistent with the idiomaticity of the source language. Cognitive values are especially present in the topic offered by Herta Müller, that is, what living in a communist dictatorship means: constant fear of the secret police, reporting to authorities, individual incapacitation, censorship, thus — topics known to Czech and Polish readers from their own history.

The main focus of this paper is to examine the translation strategies of the translators of Herta Müller's novel Atemschaukel, Radka Denemarková (Czech) and Katarzyna Leszczyńska (Polish). The aim is to find out to what extent the cultural experience of these translators, consisting of biographical, artistic and linguistic aspects, has influenced the translations. Important in this context is the transculturalism of the author Herta Müller. She uses idiomatic expressions and uses borrowings and a multitude of neologisms, the translation of which is influenced to varying degrees by the cultural experience of the translators in their search for equivalence at the level of expression. Utilizing a two-step mixed method approach, this study firstly identifies salient dimensions of home-sharing stay experience based on the premises of the intimacy theory through a qualitative analysis and then empirically examines the mechanism through which home-sharing stay experience impacts tourism experience and destination image perceptions. Six salient dimensions of home-sharing stay experience (i.e., space presence, social presence, knowledge sharing, activity sharing, host interaction, and guest interaction) are identified through the qualitative research. Utilizing the instrument developed to measure salient dimensions of home-sharing stay experience holistically, this study finds that space presence, social presence, and knowledge sharing positively contribute to tourists' authentic tourism experience. Findings further indicate that knowledge sharing, activity sharing, and host interaction are positively related to tourists' cultural experience. Tourists' cultural and authentic tourism experiences are found to be positively related to their cognitive and affective perceptions of destination image. • Home-sharing lodging experience has six salient dimensions. • Space presence, social presence, and knowledge sharing are positively related to authentic tourism experience. • Knowledge sharing, activity sharing, and host interaction are positively related to cultural tourism experience. • Both cultural and authentic tourism experiences influences cognitive and affective destination image perceptions. Due to globalisation, Asian countries have been pressed to improve their English skills to maintain international competitiveness. Though foreign educators heeded the call to meet the high demand of English learning in Taiwan, their turn-over rate remained persistently high. Assuming cultural differences might be a crucial cause, this study inquired into the cultural experience and adjustment of two foreign educators in Taiwan from a narrative inquiry approach. In addition to an extensive review of local literature, the narratives of the participants revealed the following: (1) strong motives and low/ inaccurate expectations might benefit cultural adjustment; (2) self-initiated relocation could imply more challenges than organizationally assigned relocation; (3) support and social network seem beneficial to cultural transition; (4) cultural differences were found in food, living environment, transportation/traffic, and social interactions; (5) required cultural adjustments include perseverance, trial and error, learning local language, acceptance, and contentment. Such findings not only shed light on Taiwanese culture but also bear implications for successful adjustments through the lens of foreign educators.
