JWST has revealed a large population of compact, red galaxies at $z>4$ known as Little Red Dots (LRDs). We analyze the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 95 LRDs from the JWST PRIMER survey with complete photometric coverage from $1-18\ \mu$m using NIRCam and MIRI imaging, representing the most extensive SED analysis on a large LRD sample with long-wavelength MIRI data. We examine SED models in which either galaxy or active galactic nucleus (AGN) emission dominates the rest-frame UV or optical continuum, extracting physical properties to explore each scenario's implications. In the galaxy-only model, we find massive, dusty stellar populations alongside unobscured, low-mass components, hinting at inhomogeneous obscuration. The AGN-only model indicates dusty, luminous AGNs with low hot dust fractions compared to typical quasars. A hybrid AGN and galaxy model suggests low-mass, unobscured galaxies in the UV, with stellar mass estimates spanning $\sim$2 dex across the different models, underscoring the need for caution in interpreting LRD stellar masses. With MIRI photometry, the galaxy-only model produces stellar masses within cosmological limits, but extremely high stellar mass densities are inferred. The hybrid model infers highly overmassive black holes exceeding those in recently reported high-redshift AGNs, hinting at a partial AGN contribution to the rest-optical continuum or widespread super-Eddington accretion. Our findings highlight the extreme conditions required for both AGN or galaxy dominated scenarios in LRDs, supporting a mixed contribution to the red continuum, or novel scenarios to explain the observed emission., Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures, submitted to ApJ. We present the properties of a massive, large, dusty, metal-rich, star-forming galaxy at z_spec=6.73. GOODSN-100182 was observed with JWST/NIRSpec as part of the AURORA survey, and is also covered by public multi-wavelength HST and JWST imaging. While the large mass of GOODSN-100182 (~10^10 M_sun) was indicated prior to JWST, NIRCam rest-optical imaging now reveals the presence of an extended disk (r_eff~1.5 kpc). In addition, the NIRSpec R~1000 spectrum of GOODSN-100182 includes the detection of a large suite of rest-optical nebular emission lines ranging in wavelength from [OII]3727 up to [NII]6583. The ratios of Balmer lines suggest significant dust attenuation (E(B-V)_gas=0.40+0.10/-0.09), consistent with the red rest-UV slope inferred for GOODSN-100182 (beta=-0.50+/-0.09). The star-formation rate based on dust-corrected H-alpha emission is log(SFR(H-alpha)/ M_sun/yr)=2.02+0.13/-0.14, well above the z~7 star-forming main sequence in terms of specific SFR. Strikingly, the ratio of [NII]6583/H-alpha emission suggests almost solar metallicity, as does the ratio ([OIII]5007/H-beta)/([NII]6583/H-alpha) and the detection of the faint [FeII]4360 emission feature, whereas the [OIII]5007/[OII]3727 ratio suggests roughly 50% solar metallicity. Overall, the excitation and ionization properties of GOODSN-100182 more closely resemble those of typical star-forming galaxies at z~2-3 rather than z~7. Based on public spectroscopy of the GOODS-N field, we find that GOODSN-100182 resides within a significant galaxy overdensity, and is accompanied by a spectroscopically-confirmed neighbor galaxy. JWST has enabled the detection of the UV continuum of galaxies at z>10, evidencing a population of extremely blue, potentially dust-free galaxies. Interpreting the UV spectra of galaxies as they redden is complicated by the well-known degeneracy between stellar ages, dust, and nebular continuum. The main goal of this paper is to develop a theoretical model for the relationship between galaxy UV slopes, bursty star formation histories, dust evolution, and the contribution from nebular regions. We accomplish this via cosmological zoom-in simulations, and in specific, build a layered model where we simulate the UV slopes of galaxies with increasingly complex physics. Our main results follow. (i) Unattenuated stellar populations with no nebular emission exhibit a diverse range of intrinsic UV slopes, with values ranging from beta ~ -3 --> -2.2 due to long delays between bursts. This is manifested by an inverse correlation between the intrinsic UV slope and sSFR for early galaxies such that higher sSFR corresponds to bluer UV slopes. (ii) When including dust, our model galaxies demonstrate a rapid rise in dust obscuration between z ~ 8-10. This increase in dust mass is due to high grain-grain shattering rates, and enhanced growth per unit dust mass in very small grains, resulting in UV-detected galaxies at z ~ 12 descending into ALMA-detectable galaxies by z ~ 6. The rapid rise in dust content at z ~ 8-10 leads to a systematic reddening of the UV slopes during this redshift range. (iii) The inclusion of nebular continuum reddens the UV slope by a median factor Delta beta ~ 0.2-0.4. However, when including nebular continuum, our highest redshift galaxies (z~12) are insufficiently blue compared to observations; this may imply an evolving escape fraction from HII regions with redshift., Comment: Submitted to ApJ; comments welcome

We use JWST/NIRSpec observations from the Assembly of Ultradeep Rest-optical Observations Revealing Astrophysics (AURORA) survey to constrain the shape of the nebular attenuation curve of a star-forming galaxy at z=4.41, GOODSN-17940. We utilize 11 unblended HI recombination lines to derive the attenuation curve spanning optical to near-infrared wavelengths (3751-9550 \r{A}). We then leverage a high-S/N spectroscopic detection of the rest-frame ultraviolet continuum in combination with rest-UV photometric measurements to constrain the shape of the curve at ultraviolet wavelengths. While this UV constraint is predominantly based on stellar emission, the large measured equivalent widths of H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$ indicate that GOODSN-17940 is dominated by an extremely young stellar population <10 Myr in age such that the UV stellar continuum experiences the same attenuation as the nebular emission. The resulting combined nebular attenuation curve spans 1400-9550 \r{A} and has a shape that deviates significantly from commonly assumed dust curves in high-redshift studies. Relative to the Milky Way, SMC, and Calzetti curves, the new curve has a steeper slope at long wavelengths ($\lambda>5000$ \r{A}) while displaying a similar slope across blue-optical wavelengths ($\lambda=3750-5000$ \r{A}). In the ultraviolet, the new curve is shallower than the SMC and Calzetti curves and displays no significant 2175 \r{A} bump. This work demonstrates that the most commonly assumed dust curves are not appropriate for all high-redshift galaxies. These results highlight the ability to derive nebular attenuation curves for individual high-redshift sources with deep JWST/NIRSpec spectroscopy, thereby improving the accuracy of physical properties inferred from nebular emission lines., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures, 1 table, submitted to ApJ

We present results on the emission-line properties of z=1.4-7.5 star-forming galaxies in the Assembly of Ultradeep Rest-optical Observations Revealing Astrophysics (AURORA) Cycle 1 JWST/NIRSpec program. Based on its depth, continuous wavelength coverage from 1--5 microns, and medium spectral resolution (R~1000), AURORA includes detections of a large suite of nebular emission lines spanning a broad range in rest wavelength. We investigate the locations of AURORA galaxies in multiple different emission-line diagrams, including traditional "BPT" diagrams of [OIII]/Hbeta vs. [NII]/Halpha, [SII]/Halpha, and [OI]/Halpha, and the "ionization-metallicity" diagram of [OIII]/[OII] (O32) vs. ([OIII]+[OII])/Hbeta (R23). We also consider a bluer rest-frame "ionization-metallicity" diagram introduced recently to characterize z>10 galaxies: [NeIII]/[OII] vs. ([NeIII]+[OII])/Hdelta; as well as longer-wavelength diagnostic diagrams extending into the rest-frame near-IR: [OIII]/Hbeta vs. [SIII]/[SII] (S32); and HeI/Pagamma and [SIII]/Pagamma vs. [FeII]/Pabeta. With a significant boost in signal-to-noise and large, representative samples of individual galaxy detections, the AURORA emission-line diagrams presented here definitively confirm a physical picture in which chemically-young, alpha-enhanced, massive stars photoionize the ISM in distant galaxies with a harder ionizing spectrum at fixed nebular metallicity than in their z~0 counterparts. We also uncover previously unseen evolution prior to z~2 in the [OIII]/Hbeta vs. [NII]/Halpha diagram, which motivates deep NIRSpec observations at even higher redshift. Finally, we present the first statistical sample of rest-frame near-IR emission-line diagnostics in star-forming galaxies at high redshift. We present the number densities and physical properties of the bright galaxies spectroscopically confirmed at $z\sim7-14$. Our sample is composed of 53 galaxies at $z_\mathrm{spec}\sim7-14$, including recently-confirmed galaxies at $z_\mathrm{spec}=12.34-14.32$ with JWST, as well as new confirmations at $z_\mathrm{spec}=6.583-7.643$ with $-24< M_\mathrm{UV}< -21$ mag using ALMA and Keck. Our JWST/NIRSpec observations have also revealed that very bright galaxy candidates at $z\sim10-13$ identified from ground-based telescope images before JWST are passive galaxies at $z\sim3-4$, emphasizing the necessity of strict screening and spectroscopy in the selection of the brightest galaxies at $z>10$. The UV luminosity functions derived from these spectroscopic results are consistent with a double power-law function, showing tensions with theoretical models at the bright end. To understand the origin of the overabundance of bright galaxies, we investigate their morphologies using JWST/NIRCam high-resolution images obtained in various surveys including PRIMER and COSMOS-Web. We find that $\sim70\%$ of the bright galaxies at $z\sim7$ exhibit clumpy morphologies with multiple sub-components, suggesting merger-induced starburst activity, which is consistent with SED fitting results showing bursty star formation histories. At $z\gtrsim10$, bright galaxies are classified into two types of galaxies; extended ones with weak high-ionization emission lines, and compact ones with strong high-ionization lines including NIV]$\lambda$1486, indicating that at least two different processes (e.g., merger-induced starburst and compact star formation/AGN) are shaping the physical properties of the brightest galaxies at $z\gtrsim10$ and are responsible for their overabundance., Comment: 32 pages, 22 figures, submitted to ApJ

The escape fraction of ionising photons from galaxies ($f_\mathrm{esc}$) is a key parameter for understanding how intergalactic hydrogen became reionised, but it remains mostly unconstrained. Measurements have been limited to the average value in galaxy ensembles and handfuls of individual detections. To help understand which mechanisms govern ionising photon escape, here we infer the distribution of $f_\mathrm{esc}$. We develop a hierarchical Bayesian inference technique to estimate the population distribution of $f_\mathrm{esc}$ from the ratio of Lyman Continuum to non-ionising UV flux measured from broadband photometry. We apply it to a sample of 148 z ~ 3.5 star-forming galaxies from the VANDELS spectroscopic survey. We explore four physically motivated distributions: constant, log-normal, exponential and bimodal, recovering $\langle f_\mathrm{esc} \rangle \approx5\%$ for most models. We find the observations are best described by an exponential $f_\mathrm{esc}$ distribution with scale factor $\mu=0.05^{+0.01}_{-0.02}$. This indicates most galaxies in our sample exhibit very low escape fractions while predicting substantial ionising photon leakage for only a few galaxies, implying a range of optical depths in the ISM and/or time variability in ionising photon escape. We rule out a bimodal distribution at high significance, indicating that a purely bimodal model of ionising photon escape (due to very strong sightline and/or time variability) is not favoured. We compare our recovered exponential distribution with the SPHINX simulations and find that, while the simulation also predicts an exponential-like distribution, it significantly underpredicts our inferred mean. We compare mock ultraviolet C II and Si II absorption and emission line features generated using a ~10$^9$ $M_\odot$ virtual galaxy with observations of 131 $z~3$ galaxies from the VANDELS survey. We find that the mock spectra reproduce reasonably well a large majority (83%) of the \vandels\ spectra ($\chi^2<2$), but do not resemble the most massive objects ($>10^{10}M_\odot$) which exhibit broad absorption features. Interestingly, the best-matching mock spectra originate from periods of intense star formation in the virtual galaxy, where its luminosity is four times higher than in periods of relative quiescence. Furthermore, for each galaxy, we predict the Lyman Continuum (LyC) escape fractions using the environment of the virtual galaxy. We derive an average escape fraction of 0.01$\pm$0.02, consistent with other estimates from the literature. The predicted escape fractions are tightly correlated with the Lyman-$\alpha$ escape fractions and highly consistent with observed empirical trends. Additionally, galaxies with larger predicted escape fractions exhibit bluer $\beta$ slopes, more Lyman-$\alpha$ flux, and weaker low-ionization absorption lines. Building upon the good agreement between our predictions and observationally established LyC diagnostics, we examine the LyC leakage mechanisms in the simulation. We find that LyC photon leakage is enhanced in directions where the observed flux dominantly emerges from compact regions depleted of neutral gas and dust, mirroring the scenario inferred from observational data. In general, this study further highlights the potential of high-resolution radiation hydrodynamics simulations in analyzing UV absorption and emission line features and providing valuable insights into the LyC leakage of star-forming galaxies., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, 0 birds. We present a sample of 341 "little red dots" (LRDs) spanning the redshift range $z\sim2-11$ using data from the CEERS, PRIMER, JADES, UNCOVER and NGDEEP surveys. These sources are likely heavily-reddened AGN that trace a previously-hidden phase of dust-obscured black hole growth in the early Universe. Unlike past use of color indices to identify LRDs, we employ continuum slope fitting using shifting bandpasses to sample the same rest-frame emission blueward and redward of the Balmer break. This approach allows us to identify LRDs over a wider redshift range and is less susceptible to contamination from galaxies with strong breaks that otherwise lack a rising red continuum. The redshift distribution of our sample increases at $z<8$ and then undergoes a rapid decline at $z\sim4.5$, which may tie the emergence, and obscuration, of these sources to the inside-out growth that galaxies experience during this epoch. We find that LRDs are 2-3 dex more numerous than bright quasars at $z\sim5-7$, but their number density is only 0.6-1 dex higher than X-ray and UV selected AGN at these redshifts. Within our sample, we have identified the first X-ray detected LRDs at $z=3.1$ and $z=4.66$. An X-ray spectral analysis confirms that these AGN are moderately obscured with $\log\,(N_{\rm H}/{\rm cm}^{2}$) of $23.3^{+0.4}_{-1.3}$ and $22.72^{+0.13}_{-0.16}$. Our analysis reveals that reddened AGN emission dominates their rest-optical light, while the rest-UV originates from their host galaxies. We also present NIRSpec follow-up spectroscopy of 17 LRDs that show broad emission lines consistent with AGN activity. The confirmed AGN fraction of our sample is $71\%$ for sources with F444W$<26.5$. In addition, we find three LRDs with narrow blue-shifted Balmer absorption features in their spectra, suggesting an outflow of high-density, low ionization gas from near the central engine of these faint, red AGN., Comment: 23 pages, 17 figures, submitted to ApJ

To study the chemical evolution across cosmic epochs, we investigate Ne, S, Cl, and Ar abundance patterns in the COS Legacy Archive Spectroscopic SurveY (CLASSY). CLASSY comprises local star-forming galaxies (0.02 < z < 0.18) with enhanced star-formation rates, making them strong analogues to high-z star-forming galaxies. With direct measurements of electron temperature, we derive accurate ionic abundances for all elements and assess ionization correction factors (ICFs) to account for unseen ions and derive total abundances. We find Ne/O, S/O, Cl/O, and Ar/O exhibit constant trends with gas-phase metallicity for 12+log(O/H) < 8.5 but significant correlation for Ne/O and Ar/O with metallicity for 12+log(O/H) > 8.5, likely due to ICFs. Thus, applicability of the ICFs to integrated spectra of galaxies could bias results, underestimating true abundance ratios. Using CLASSY as a local reference, we assess the evolution of Ne/O, S/O, and Ar/O in galaxies at z>3, finding no cosmic evolution of Ne/O, while the lack of direct abundance determinations for S/O and Ar/O can bias the interpretation of the evolution of these elements. We determine the fundamental metallicity relationship (FMR) for CLASSY and compare to the high-redshift FMR, finding no evolution. Finally, we perform the first mass-neon relationship analysis across cosmic epochs, finding a slight evolution to high Ne at later epochs. Combining the public JWST/NIRCam imaging programs CEERS, PRIMER and JADES, spanning a total area of $\sim500\,{\rm arcmin}^2$, we obtain a sample of $>$30,000 galaxies at $z_{\rm phot}\sim4-9$ that allows us to perform a complete, rest-optical selected census of the galaxy population at $z>3$. Comparing the stellar mass $M_*$ and the UV-slope $\beta$ distributions between JWST- and HST-selected samples, we generally find very good agreement and no significant biases. Nevertheless, JWST enables us to probe a new population of UV-red galaxies that was missing from previous HST-based Lyman Break Galaxy (LBG) samples. We measure galaxy stellar mass functions (SMFs) at $z\sim4-9$ down to limiting masses of $10^{7.5}-10^{8.5}\,{\rm M_\odot}$, finding steep low mass slopes over the entire redshift range, reaching values of $\alpha\approx-2$ at $z\gtrsim6$. At the high-mass end, UV-red galaxies dominate at least out to $z\sim6$. The implied redshift evolution of the SMF suggests a rapid build-up of massive dust-obscured or quiescent galaxies from $z\sim6$ to $z\sim4$ as well as an enhanced efficiency of star formation towards earlier times ($z\gtrsim6$). Finally, we show that the galaxy mass density grows by a factor $\sim20\times$ from $z\sim9$ to $z\sim4$. We present a measurement of the low-mass quiescent size-mass relation at Cosmic Noon (1

Spectra of the highest redshift galaxies taken with JWST are now allowing us to see into the heart of the reionization epoch. Many of these observed galaxies exhibit strong damping wing absorption redward of their Lyman-$\alpha$ emission. These observations have been used to measure the redshift evolution of the neutral fraction of the intergalactic medium and sizes of ionized bubbles. However, these estimates have been made using a simple analytic model for the intergalactic damping wing. We explore the recent observations with models of inhomogeneous reionization from the Sherwood-Relics simulation suite. We carry out a comparison between the damping wings calculated from the simulations and from the analytic model. We find that although the agreement is good on the red side of the Lyman-$\alpha$ emission, there is a discrepancy on the blue side due to residual neutral hydrogen present in the simulations, which saturates the intergalactic absorption. For this reason, we find that it is difficult to reproduce the claimed observations of large bubble sizes at z ~ 7, which are driven by a detection of transmitted flux blueward of the Lyman-$\alpha$ emission. We suggest instead that the observations can be explained by a model with smaller ionized bubbles and larger intrinsic Lyman-$\alpha$ emission from the host galaxy., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures. Super star cluster (SSC) A1 (3.1E5 Msun) in NGC 3125 has one of the strongest (EW = 4.6 +/- 0.5 Ang) broad (FWHM = 1131 +\- 40 km/s) He II 1640 emission lines in the nearby Universe and constitutes an important template for interpreting observations of extreme He II emitters out to redshifts of z = 2-3. We use Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) observations of A1 to show that there is no significant contamination of the He II line with nebular emission and that the line is redshifted by 121 +/-17 km/s relative to ISM lines. We compare the COS G130M + G160M observations of A1 to recent binary BPASS and single-star Charlot & Bruzual (C&B) simple stellar population (SSP) models with Very Massive Stars (VMS) of up to 300 Msun. We suggest why BPASS models fail to reproduce A1's He II emission. On the other hand, a C&B model with Z = 0.008, age = 2.2 Myr, and VMS approaching the Eddington limit provides an excellent fit to the He II emission and fits reasonably well C III 1175, N V 1238,1241, and C IV 1548, 1551. We present O V 1371 line-profile predictions showing that this line constitutes an important tracer of youth and VMS in galaxies. Finally, we discuss the presence of VMS in CDFS131717, a highly star-forming low-metallicity galaxy located at z = 3.071, which has a tentative detection of O V absorption and strong broad He II emission. These features are rare and hint to the presence of short-lived VMS in the galaxy. During the first 500 million years of cosmic history, the first stars and galaxies formed, seeding the Universe with heavy elements and eventually reionizing the intergalactic medium. Observations with JWST have uncovered a surprisingly high abundance of candidates for early star-forming galaxies, with distances (redshifts, $z$), estimated from multi-band photometry, as large as $z\approx 16$, far beyond pre-JWST limits. While generally robust, such photometric redshifts can suffer from degeneracies and occasionally catastrophic errors. Spectroscopic measurement is required to validate these sources and to reliably quantify physical properties that can constrain galaxy formation models and cosmology. Here we present JWST spectroscopy that confirms redshifts for two very luminous galaxies with $z > 11$, but also demonstrates that another candidate with suggested $z\approx 16$ instead has $z = 4.9$, with an unusual combination of nebular line emission and dust reddening that mimics the colors expected for much more distant objects. These results reinforce evidence for the early, rapid formation of remarkably luminous galaxies, while also highlighting the necessity of spectroscopic verification. The large abundance of bright, early galaxies may indicate shortcomings in current galaxy formation models, or deviation from physical properties (such as the stellar initial mass function) that are generally believed to hold at later times., Comment: Accelerated Article Preview (AAP) version published in Nature

We investigate the presence of ionised gas outflows in a sample of 141 main-sequence star-forming galaxies at $1.2 10.8$, AGN-dominated galaxies, suggesting that AGNs may be the primary drivers of these gas flows. Surprisingly, at $\log(M_\star/M_{\odot})\leq 9.6$, the observed line profiles are fully consistent with a rotating disc model, indicating that ionised gas outflows in dwarf galaxies might play a negligible role even during the peak of cosmic star-formation activity. Finally, we find that the observed mass loading factor scales with stellar mass as expected from the TNG50 cosmological simulation, but the ionised gas mass accounts for only 2$\%$ of the predicted value. We present a comparison of the nitrogen-to-oxygen ratio (N/O) in 37 high-redshift galaxies at $z\sim$2 taken from the KMOS Lensed Emission Lines and VElocity Review (KLEVER) Survey with a comparison sample of local galaxies, taken from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The KLEVER sample shows only a mild enrichment in N/O of $+$0.1 dex when compared to local galaxies at a given gas-phase metallicity (O/H), but shows a depletion in N/O of $-$0.36 dex when compared at a fixed stellar mass (M$_*$). We find a strong anti-correlation in local galaxies between N/O and SFR in the M$_*$-N/O plane, similar to the anti-correlation between O/H and SFR found in the mass-metallicity relation (MZR). We use this anti-correlation to construct a fundamental nitrogen relation (FNR), analogous to the fundamental metallicity relation (FMR). We find that KLEVER galaxies are consistent with both the FMR and the FNR. This suggests that the depletion of N/O in high-$z$ galaxies when considered at a fixed M$_*$ is driven by the redshift-evolution of the mass-metallicity relation in combination with a near redshift-invariant N/O-O/H relation. Furthermore, the existence of an fundamental nitrogen relation suggests that the mechanisms governing the fundamental metallicity relation must be probed by not only O/H, but also N/O, suggesting pure-pristine gas inflows are not the primary driver of the FMR, and other properties such as variations in galaxy age and star formation efficiency must be important., Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures, Accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

We investigate the relationship between dust attenuation and stellar mass ($M_*$) in star-forming galaxies over cosmic time. For this analysis, we compare measurements from the MOSFIRE Deep Evolution Field (MOSDEF) survey at $z\sim2.3$ and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) at $z\sim0$, augmenting the latter optical dataset with both UV Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) and mid-infrared Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) photometry from the GALEX-SDSS-WISE Catalog. We quantify dust attenuation using both spectroscopic measurements of H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$ emission lines, and photometric measurements of the rest-UV stellar continuum. The H$\alpha$/H$\beta$ ratio is used to determine the magnitude of attenuation at the wavelength of H$\alpha$, $A_{{\rm H}\alpha}$. Rest-UV colors and spectral-energy-distribution fitting are used to estimate $A_{1600}$, the magnitude of attenuation at a rest wavelength of 1600\AA. As in previous work, we find a lack of significant evolution in the relation between dust attenuation and $M_*$ over the redshift range $z\sim0$ to $z\sim2.3$. Folding in the latest estimates of the evolution of $M_{{\rm dust}}$, $({M_{{\rm dust}}}/{M_{{\rm gas}}})$, and gas surface density at fixed $M_*$, we find that the expected $M_{{\rm dust}}$ and dust mass surface density are both significantly higher at $z\sim2.3$ than at $z\sim0$. These differences appear at odds with the lack of evolution in dust attenuation. To explain the striking constancy in attenuation vs. $M_*$, it is essential to determine the relationship between metallicity and $({M_{{\rm dust}}}/{M_{{\rm gas}}})$, the dust mass absorption coefficient, and dust geometry, and the evolution of these relations and quantities from $z\sim0$ to $z\sim2.3$., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, accepted to ApJ

We present a study of metal-enriched halo gas traced by MgII and CIV absorption at z<2 in the MUSE Analysis of Gas around Galaxies survey and the Quasar Sightline and Galaxy Evolution survey. Using these large and complete galaxy surveys in quasar fields, we study the dependence of the metal distribution on galaxy properties and overdensities, out to physical projected separations of 750 kpc. We find that the cool, low-ionization gas is significantly affected by the environment across the full redshift range probed, with ~2-3 times more prevalent and stronger MgII absorption in higher overdensity group environments and in regions with greater overall stellar mass and star formation rates. Complementary to these results, we have further investigated the more highly ionized gas as traced by CIV absorption, and found that it is likely to be more extended than the MgII gas, with ~2 times higher covering fraction at a given distance. We find that the strength and covering fraction of CIV absorption show less significant dependence on galaxy properties and environment than the MgII absorption, but more massive and star-forming galaxies nevertheless also show ~2 times higher incidence of CIV absorption. The incidence of MgII and CIV absorption within the virial radius shows a tentative increase with redshift, being higher by a factor of ~1.5 and ~4, respectively, at z>1. It is clear from our results that environmental processes have a significant impact on the distribution of metals around galaxies and need to be fully accounted for when analyzing correlations between gaseous haloes and galaxy properties., Comment: 27 pages; accepted for publication in MNRAS

In this work, we study the evolution of the mass-metallicity relations (MZRs) as predicted by the GAlaxy Evolution and Assembly (GAEA) semi-analytic model. We contrast these predictions with recent results from the VANDELS survey, that allows us to expand the accessible redshift range for the stellar MZR up to $z\sim3.5$. We complement our study by considering the evolution of the gas-phase MZR in the same redshift range. We show that GAEA is able to reproduce the observed evolution of the $z<3.5$ gas-phase MZR and $z<0.7$ stellar MZR, while it overpredicts the stellar metallicity at $z\sim3.5$. Furthermore, GAEA also reproduces the so-called fundamental metallicity relation (FMR) between gas-phase metallicity, stellar mass and star formation rate (SFR). In particular, the gas-phase FMR in GAEA is already in place at $z\sim5$ and shows almost no evolution at lower redshift. GAEA predicts the existence of a stellar FMR, that is, however, characterized by a relevant redshift evolution, although its shape follows closely the gas-phase FMR. We also report additional unsolved tensions between model and data: the overall normalization of the predicted MZR agrees with observations only within $\sim$0.1 dex; the largest discrepancies are seen at $z\sim3.5$ where models tend to slightly overpredict observed metallicities; the slope of the predicted MZR at fixed SFR is too steep below a few ${\rm M}_\odot\ {\rm yr}^{-1}$. We present rest-optical spectroscopic properties of a sample of four galaxies in the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array Hubble Ultra Deep Field (ALMA HUDF). These galaxies span the redshift range $1.41 \leq z \leq 2.54$ and the stellar mass range $10.36\leq\log(M_*/{\rm M}_{\odot})\leq10.91$. They have existing far-infrared and radio measurements of dust-continuum and molecular gas emission from which bolometric star-formation rates (SFRs), dust masses, and molecular gas masses have been estimated. We use new $H$- and $K$-band near-infrared spectra from the Keck/MOSFIRE spectrograph to estimate SFRs from dust-corrected H$\alpha$ emission (SFR(H$\alpha$)) and gas-phase oxygen abundances from the ratio [NII]$\lambda 6584$/H$\alpha$. We find that the dust-corrected SFR(H$\alpha$) is systematically lower than the bolometric SFR by a factor of several, and measure gas-phase oxygen abundances in a narrow range, $12+\log(\mbox{O/H})=8.59-8.69$ ($0.8-1.0\: (\mbox{O/H})_{\odot}$). Relative to a large $z\sim 2$ comparison sample from the MOSDEF survey, the ALMA HUDF galaxies scatter roughly symmetrically around the best-fit linear mass-metallicity relation, providing tentative evidence for a flattening in the SFR dependence of metallicity at high stellar mass. Combining oxygen abundances with estimates of dust and molecular gas masses, we show that there is no significant evolution in the normalization of the dust-to-gas ratio DGR vs. metallicity relation from $z\sim0$ to $z\sim2$. This result is consistent with some semi-analytic models and cosmological simulations describing the evolution of dust in galaxies. We present near-infrared observations of 42 gravitationally lensed galaxies obtained in the framework of the KMOS Lensed Emission Lines and VElocity Review (KLEVER) Survey, a program aimed at investigating the spatially resolved properties of the ionised gas in 1.2 3$\sigma$) "inverted" gradients are also found, showing an anti-correlation between metallicity and star formation rate density on local scales, possibly suggesting recent episodes of pristine gas accretion or strong radial flows in place. Nevertheless, the individual metallicity maps are characterised by a variety of different morphologies, with flat radial gradients sometimes hiding non-axisymmetric variations on kpc scales which are washed out by azimuthal averages, especially in interacting systems or in those undergoing local episodes of recent star formation., Comment: Main text: 23 pages, 11 figures. We investigate the prevalence of galactic-scale outflows in post-starburst (PSB) galaxies at high redshift ($1 < z < 1.4$), using the deep optical spectra available in the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey (UDS). We use a sample of $\sim40$ spectroscopically confirmed PSBs, recently identified in the UDS field, and perform a stacking analysis in order to analyse the structure of strong interstellar absorption features such as Mg ii ($\lambda2800$ Ang.). We find that for massive ($M_* > 10^{10}\rm\,M_{\odot}$) PSBs at $z > 1$, there is clear evidence for a strong blue-shifted component to the Mg ii absorption feature, indicative of high-velocity outflows ($v_{\rm out}\sim1150\pm160\rm\,km\,s^{-1}$) in the interstellar medium. We conclude that such outflows are typical in massive PSBs at this epoch, and potentially represent the residual signature of a feedback process that quenched these galaxies. Using full spectral fitting, we also obtain a typical stellar velocity dispersion $\sigma_*$ for these PSBs of $\sim200\rm\,km\,s^{-1}$, which confirms they are intrinsically massive in nature (dynamical mass $M_{\rm d}\sim10^{11}\rm\,M_{\odot}$). Given that these high-$z$ PSBs are also exceptionally compact ($r_{\rm e}\sim1$--$2\rm\,kpc$) and spheroidal (Sersic index $n\sim3$), we propose that the outflowing winds may have been launched during a recent compaction event (e.g. major merger or disc collapse) that triggered either a centralised starburst or active galactic nuclei (AGN) activity. Finally, we find no evidence for AGN signatures in the optical spectra of these PSBs, suggesting they were either quenched by stellar feedback from the starburst itself, or that if AGN feedback is responsible, the AGN episode that triggered quenching does not linger into the post-starburst phase., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report on the HST detection of the Lyman-continuum (LyC) radiation emitted by a galaxy at redshift z=3.794, dubbed Ion1 (Vanzella et al. 2012). The LyC from Ion1 is detected at rest-frame wavelength 820$\sim$890 \AA with HST WFC3/UVIS in the F410M band ($m_{410}=27.60\pm0.36$ magnitude (AB), peak SNR = 4.17 in a circular aperture with radius r = 0.12'') and at 700$\sim$830 \AA with the VLT/VIMOS in the U-band ($m_U = 27.84\pm0.19$ magnitude (AB), peak SNR = 6.7 with a r = 0.6'' aperture). A 20-hr VLT/VIMOS spectrum shows low- and high-ionization interstellar metal absorption lines, the P-Cygni profile of CIV and Ly$\alpha$ in absorption. The latter spectral feature differs from what observed in known LyC emitters, which show strong Ly$\alpha$ emission. An HST far-UV color map reveals that the LyC emission escapes from a region of the galaxy that is bluer than the rest, presumably because of lower dust obscuration. The F410M image shows that the centroid of the LyC emission is offset from the centroid of the non-ionizing UV emission by 0.12''$\pm$0.03'', corresponding to 0.85$\pm$0.21 kpc (physical), and that its morphology is likely moderately resolved. These morphological characteristics favor a scenario where the LyC photons produced by massive stars escape from low HI column-density "cavities" in the ISM, possibly carved by stellar winds and/or supernova. We also collect the VIMOS U-band images of a sample of 107 Lyman-break galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts at $3.40

Massive $10^{4-5}\rm\ M_{\odot}$ black hole seeds resulting from the \textit{direct} collapse of pristine gas require a metal-free atomic cooling halo with extremely low H$_2$ fraction, allowing the gas to cool isothermally in the presence of atomic hydrogen. In order to achieve this chemo-thermodynamical state, the gas needs to be irradiated by both: Lyman-Werner (LW) photons in the energy range $11.2-13.6$ eV capable of photodissociating H$_2$, and $0.76$ eV photons capable of photodetaching H$^-$. Employing cosmological simulations capable of creating the first galaxies in high resolution, we explore if there exists a subset that favours DCBH formation in their vicinity. We find a fundamental relation between the maximum distance at which a galaxy can cause DCBH formation and its star formation rate (SFR), which automatically folds in the chemo-thermodynamical effects of both H$_2$ photo-dissociation and H$^-$ photo-detachment. This is in contrast to the scatter in the LW flux parameter seen at the maximum distance. It shows up to a 3 order of magnitude scatter, which can be interpreted as a scatter in `J$_{crit}$'. Thus, computing the rates and/or the LW flux from a galaxy is no longer necessary to identify neighbouring sites of DCBH formation, as our relation allows one to distinguish regions where DCBH formation could be triggered in the vicinity of a galaxy of a given SFR., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We investigate the relation between the star formation rate (SFR) and the stellar mass (M), i.e. the Main Sequence (MS) relation of star-forming galaxies, at 1.3<=z<6 in the first four HST Frontier Fields, based on rest-frame UV observations. Gravitational lensing combined with deep HST observations allows us to extend the analysis of the MS down to stellar masses as low as logM/Msun~7.5 at z<~4 and logM/Msun~8 at higher redshifts, a factor of ~10 below most previous results. We perform an accurate simulation to take into account the effect of observational uncertainties on the MS and correct for the Eddington bias. This step allows us to reliably measure the MS and in particular its slope. While the normalization increases with redshift, we fit an unevolving and approximately linear slope. We nicely extend to lower masses the results of brighter surveys. Thanks to the large dynamic range in mass and by making use of the simulation, we analyzed any possible mass dependence of the dispersion around the MS. We find tentative evidence that the scatter decreases with increasing stellar masses, suggesting a larger variety of star formation histories in low mass galaxies. This trend agrees with theoretical predictions, and is explained as either a consequence of the smaller number of progenitors of low mass galaxies in a hierarchical scenario and/or of the efficient but intermittent stellar feedback processes in low mass halos. Finally, we observe an increase in the SFR per unit stellar mass with redshift milder than predicted by theoretical models, implying a still incomplete understanding of the processes responsible for galaxy growth.

The critical Lyman--Werner flux required for direct collapse blackholes (DCBH) formation, or J$_{crit}$, depends on the shape of the irradiating spectral energy distribution (SED). The SEDs employed thus far have been representative of {{realistic}} single stellar populations. We study the effect of binary stellar populations on the formation of DCBH, as a result of their contribution to the Lyman--Werner radiation field. Although binary populations with ages $>$ 10 Myr yield a larger LW photon output, we find that the corresponding values of J$_{crit}$ can be up to 100 times higher than single stellar populations. We attribute this to the shape of the binary SEDs as they produce a sub--critical rate of H$^-$ photodetaching 0.76 eV photons as compared to single stellar populations, reaffirming the role that H$^-$ plays in DCBH formation. This further corroborates the idea that DCBH formation is better understood in terms of a critical region in the H$_2$--H$^-$ photo--destruction rate parameter space, rather than a single value of LW flux., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures. accepted MNRAS

Submillimetre (submm) galaxies are among the most rapidly star-forming and most massive high-redshift galaxies; thus, their properties provide important constraints on galaxy evolution models. However, there is still a debate about their stellar masses and their nature in the context of the general galaxy population. To test the reliability of their stellar mass determinations, we used a sample of simulated submm galaxies for which we derived stellar masses via spectral energy distribution (SED) modelling (with Grasil, Magphys, Hyperz and LePhare) adopting various star formation histories (SFHs). We found that the assumption of SFHs with two independent components leads to the most accurate stellar masses. Exponentially declining SFHs (tau) lead to lower masses (albeit still consistent with the true values), while the assumption of single-burst SFHs results in a significant mass underestimation. Thus, we conclude that studies based on the higher masses inferred from fitting the SEDs of real submm galaxies with double SFHs are most likely to be correct, implying that submm galaxies lie on the high-mass end of the main sequence of star-forming galaxies. This conclusion appears robust to assumptions of whether or not submm galaxies are driven by major mergers, since the suite of simulated galaxies modelled here contains examples of both merging and isolated galaxies. We identified discrepancies between the true and inferred stellar ages (rather than the dust attenuation) as the primary determinant of the success/failure of the mass recovery. Regardless of the choice of SFH, the SED-derived stellar masses exhibit a factor of ~2 scatter around the true value; this scatter is an inherent limitation of the SED modelling due to simplified assumptions.
