Abstract

Defect tolerance is a critical enabling factor for efficient lead-halide perovskite materials, but the current understanding is primarily on band-edge (cold) carriers, with significant debate over whether hot carriers (HCs) can also exhibit defect tolerance. Here, this important gap in the field is addressed by investigating how internationally-introduced traps affect HC relaxation in CsPbX3 nanocrystals (X = Br, I, or mixture). Using femtosecond interband and intraband spectroscopy, along with energy-dependent photoluminescence measurements and kinetic modelling, it is found that HCs are not universally defect tolerant in CsPbX3, but are strongly correlated to the defect tolerance of cold carriers, requiring shallow traps to be present (as in CsPbI3). It is found that HCs are directly captured by traps, instead of going through an intermediate cold carrier, and deeper traps cause faster HC cooling, reducing the effects of the hot phonon bottleneck and Auger reheating. Abstract

Kagome magnets are expected to feature emergent properties due to the interplays among geometry, magnetism, electronic correlation, and band topology. The magnetism and topological electronic states can be tuned via the rare earth engineering in RV6Sn6 kagome metals, where R is a rare earth element. Herein, we present the synthesis and characterization of SmV6Sn6, a metal with two-dimensional kagome nets of vanadium and frustrated triangular Sm lattice. Partial of the Sm atoms are shifted from the normal R positions by c/2 along the c axis. Magnetic measurements reveal obvious anisotropy, where the easy magnetic axis is within the ab plane. Electronic transports show multiband behaviors below 200 K. Density functional theory calculations find that the electronic structure of SmV6Sn6 hosts flat bands, Dirac cone, and saddle point arising from the V-3d electrons near the Fermi level. No evidence for the existence of charge density wave or magnetic order down to 2 K can be observed. Thus, SmV6Sn6 can be viewed as a modest disordered derivative of the RV6Sn6 structure, in which the disordered rare earth ions can suppress the magnetic order and charge density wave in the RV6Sn6 kagome family.

Abstract

Aims: To examine whether functional connectivity (FC) of the occipital gyrus differs between patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) motor subtypes and healthy controls (HCs). Methods: We enrolled 30 PD patients exhibiting tremor dominance (TD), 43 PD patients with postural instability and gait disturbance (PIGD), and 42 HCs. The occipital gyrus was partitioned into six areas of interest, as seed points, via the Anatomical Automatic Labeling template to compare the FC of the three groups and analyze the relationship of FC with clinical scales. Results: Compared with the PIGD group, the TD group showed increased FC between the left superior occipital gyrus (SOG.L) and right median cingulate and paracingulate gyri (DCG.R)/right paracentral lobule/bilateral inferior parietal, but supramarginal and angular gyri; the left middle occipital gyrus (MOG.L) and left posterior cingulate gyrus (PCG.L); the MOG.R and SOG.L/right calcarine fissure and surrounding cortex/DCG.R/PCG.L/right cuneus; the left inferior occipital gyrus (IOG.L) and right caudate nucleus; and the IOG.R and PCG.L. Conclusion: Differentiated FC between the occipital gyrus and other brain areas within the PD motor subtypes, which may serve as neural markers to distinguish between patients with TD and PIGD PD. 22. Climatology of sea breeze over Jiangsu coast: An overview from the ERA5 reanalysis.

Abstract

The sea breeze characteristics for 30 years of summer (1981–2010) in the coastal region of Jiangsu Province were analysed in this study, using the four‐step filter method based on ECMWF Fifth‐Generation Reanalysis (ERA5) data. The results showed that the filtering method reasonably identified three types of sea breeze. Additionally, approximately 23% of the total summer days remained; the corkscrew type dominates the three types of sea breeze; and the backdoor sea breeze was the least common. Except for the type of backdoor sea breeze, the other two types had relatively fixed dominant weather types on three coastlines. The synoptic weather patterns in the 500‐hPa level corresponding to each sea breeze type were different. Further, the details of the diurnal cycle of lower tropospheric circulation indicated the strength of the onshore wind and the location of the large potential temperature gradient at noon being influenced by sea breeze type and coastal location. The wind strength for the three types of sea breeze on the middle coastline was stronger than that on the other two coastlines. On the three coastlines, strong onshore winds were concentrated in areas near the coastline, where they reached their maximum strengths around noon. Abstract

In this paper measurements are presented of the observed properties of aerosols and microphysics of clouds associated with the characteristics of precipitation in convective clouds that formed off the east coast of Barbados during EUREC4A. Most data were gathered by the instrumented British Antarctic Survey Twin Otter aircraft supported by detailed in-situ aerosol measurements at the Ragged Point observatory on Barbados as well as HALO and PoldiRad radars, dropsonde and satellite data. The development of precipitation was studied in the three aerosol regimes previously reported, i.e. one low aerosol regime and two containing desert dust that had been advected across the Atlantic Ocean. The later dust event also contained evidence of biomass burning aerosol. Results showed that the maximum intensity of rain was similar for all the aerosol regimes. Clouds that developed in an environment with high aerosol loading tended to be deeper than those that developed in the clean environment. It was also found that the greatest intensities occurred in clouds that had aggregated, in agreement with previous work. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

27. Reduced-Complexity Column-Layered Decoding and Implementation for LDPC Codes

Abstract

Layered decoding is well appreciated in Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) decoder implementation since it can achieve effectively high decoding throughput with low computation complexity. This work, for the first time, addresses low complexity column-layered decoding schemes and VLSI architectures for multi-Gb/s applications. At first, the Min-Sum algorithm is incorporated into the column-layered decoding. Then algorithmic transformations and judicious approximations are explored to minimize the overall computation complexity. Compared to the original column-layered decoding, the new approach can reduce the computation complexity in check node processing for high-rate LDPC codes by up to 90% while maintaining the fast convergence speed of layered decoding. Furthermore, a relaxed pipelining scheme is presented to enable very high clock speed for VLSI implementation. Equipped with these new techniques, an efficient decoder architecture for quasi-cyclic LDPC codes is developed and implemented with 0.13um CMOS technology. It is shown that a decoding throughput of nearly 4 Gb/s at maximum of 10 iterations can be achieved for a (4096, 3584) LDPC code. 28. Clinical characteristics and surgical outcomes of low-grade epilepsy-associated brain tumors.

Abstract

Background: Low-grade epilepsy-associated brain tumors (LEATs) are found to be the second most common lesion-related epilepsy. Malignant potential of LEATs is very low and the overall survival is good, so the focus of treatment is focused more on seizure outcome rather than oncological prognosis. Objectives: This study was conducted to evaluate the risk factors of seizure outcomes after resection in patients with LEATs. Design: A retrospective study. Methods: A retrospective analysis of patients with LEATs who underwent resective surgery in our three epilepsy centers between October 2010 and April 2023 with a minimum follow-up of 1 year. Demography, clinical characters, neurophysiology, and molecular neuropathology were assessed for association with postoperative seizure outcomes at 1-, 2-, and 5-year follow-up. Synthetic minority oversampling technique (SMOTE) algorithm model was performed to handle the imbalance of data distribution. Gaussian Naïve Bayes (GNB) algorithms were created as a basis for classifying outcomes according to observation indicators. Results: A total of 111 patients were enrolled in the cohort. The most common pathology was ganglioglioma (n = 37, 33.3%). The percentage of patients with seizure freedom was 91.0% (101/111) at 1-year follow-up, 87.5% (77/88) at 2-year follow-up, and 79.1% (53/67) at 5-year follow-up. Partial resection had a significantly poor seizure outcome compared to total resection and supratotal resection (p < 0.05). The epileptiform discharge on post-resective intraoperative electrocorticography (ECoG) or postoperative scalp electroencephalography (EEG) were negative factors on postoperative seizure freedom at 1-, 2-, or 5-year follow-ups (p < 0.05). The area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve value of the GNB-SMOTE model was 0.95 (95% CI, 0.876–1.000), 0.892 (95% CI, 0.656–0.934), and 0.786 (95% CI, 0.491–0.937) at 1-, 2-, and 5-year follow-up, respectively. Conclusion: The partial resection, post-resective intraoperative ECoG, and postoperative scalp EEG were valuable indicators of poor seizure outcomes. The utilization of post-resective intraoperative ECoG is beneficial to improve seizure outcomes. 43. Clinical Efficacy of Minimally Invasive Subpial Tonsillectomy (MIST) for Treatment of Chiari Malformation (Type I) with Syringomyelia.

Abstract

Objective: To investigate the clinical efficacy of minimally invasive subpial tonsillectomy (MIST) in the treatment of Chiari malformation (type I) with syringomyelia. Method A total of 209 Chiari malformation (type I) patients with syringomyelia were studied. The patients were grouped based on the syrinx diameter changes: complete disappearance group (48 patients), obvious shrinkage group (147 patients), and non-obvious shrinkage group (14 patients). The Chicago Chiari Outcome Scale (CCOS) was used to compare clinical data of the three groups of patients before treatment. The correlations between disease duration and syrinx diameter changes as well as post-treatment clinical symptoms were analyzed. The related factors of efficacy were analyzed. Results: Age and disease duration were the oldest/longest in the non-obvious shrinkage group, and the youngest/shortest in the complete disappearance group (P < 0.05). The maximum diameter reduction of syrinx was the greatest in the complete disappearance group, and the smallest in the non-obvious shrinkage group (P < 0.05). The proportions of patients with hypoesthesia, limb weakness, and muscle atrophy were the largest in the non-obvious shrinkage group, and the smallest in the complete disappearance group (P < 0.05). The CCOS score were the highest in the complete disappearance group, and the lowest in the non-obvious shrinkage group (P < 0.05). There were statistically significant (P < 0.05) negative correlations between disease duration and maximum diameter reduction of syrinx, CCOS pain score, CCOS non-pain score, CCOS functionality score, and CCOS complication score, disease duration and hypoesthesia, limb weakness, muscle atrophy, and sleep apnea. Result of multivariate stepwise regression analysis indicated that age, disease duration, and preoperative syrinx diameter were the risk factors for efficacy (P < 0.05). Conclusion: For patients with Chiari malformation complicated by syringomyelia, the longer the disease duration, the more difficult it is to achieve syrinx reduction and improve the clinical symptoms. "Minimally invasive subpial tonsillectomy (MIST) and cisterna magna reconstruction" is an improved surgical approach to treat Chiari malformation (cerebellar tonsil herniation). It has the advantages of small incision, less postoperative reaction, and fewer complications, and it emphasizes the reshaping and repair of cerebellar tonsils, reconstruction of cisterna magna, and restoration of cerebrospinal fluid circulation. The control group received routine treatment, while the experimental group received emotional ABC theory intervention at the same time.Results: The Self Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) and Self Rating Depression Scale (SDS) scores of the two groups were observed before and after nursing. There was no significant difference between the two groups before nursing (P > 0.05), but there was significant difference between the two groups after nursing, the control group was significantly higher than the experimental group (P < 0.05). Abstract

Abstract. The science guiding the EUREC4A campaign and its measurements is presented. EUREC4A comprised roughly 5 weeks of measurements in the downstream winter trades of the North Atlantic – eastward and southeastward of Barbados. Through its ability to characterize processes operating across a wide range of scales, EUREC4A marked a turning point in our ability to observationally study factors influencing clouds in the trades, how they will respond to warming, and their link to other components of the earth system, such as upper-ocean processes or the life cycle of particulate matter. This characterization was made possible by thousands (2500) of sondes distributed to measure circulations on meso- (200 km) and larger (500 km) scales, roughly 400 h of flight time by four heavily instrumented research aircraft; four global-class research vessels; an advanced ground-based cloud observatory; scores of autonomous observing platforms operating in the upper ocean (nearly 10 000 profiles), lower atmosphere (continuous profiling), and along the air–sea interface; a network of water stable isotopologue measurements; targeted tasking of satellite remote sensing; and modeling with a new generation of weather and climate models. In addition to providing an outline of the novel measurements and their composition into a unified and coordinated campaign, the six distinct scientific facets that EUREC4A explored – from North Brazil Current rings to turbulence-induced clustering of cloud droplets and its influence on warm-rain formation – are presented along with an overview of EUREC4A's outreach activities, environmental impact, and guidelines for scientific practice.
