11. Effect of Graphene on the Performance of Polyaniline/Epoxy Coating on Magnesium Alloy Surface

Abstract

For studying the effects of different addition ways of graphene on the properties of polyaniline/epoxy coatings, the in - situ polymerization method was applied to synthesize polyaniline (PANI)/graphene(G) composite powders on graphene surface, and the as - prepared powders were characterized by X - ray diffractometer, Fourier transform infrared spectrometer and scanning electron microscope. The as - synthesized composite powders, the mixed powders of PANI and G, and the PANI powders were uniformly dispersed in epoxy resin respectively to prepare coatings on the surface of AZ91D magnesium alloy. Subsequently, the effects of different graphene addition methods on the properties of polyaniline/epoxy coatings were studied through electrochemical impedance measurement, water absorption, etc. Results showed that after an immersion within 2 160 h in 3.5% (mass fraction) NaCl solution, the coating added with PANI/G composite powders not only had a higher impedance value in comparision with those added with PANI powders or with PANI/G powders, but also had better flexibility and impact resistance. Compared with the mixed powders of PANI and G, the PANI/G composite powders obtained through in - situ polymerization could better exhibit the shielding effect of G and the corrosion inhibition effect of PANI, and therefore provid better protection to magnesium alloy.

Abstract

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a potentially fatal neurological disease with severe complications and a high disability rate. An increasing number of animal experimental studies support the therapeutic effect of quercetin, which is a natural anti-inflammatory and antioxidant bioflavonoid. This paper reviewed the therapeutic effect of quercetin on a rat SCI model and summarized the relevant mechanistic research. PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, Science Direct, WanFang Data, SinoMed databases, the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and the Vip Journal Integration Platform were searched from their inception to April 2023 for animal experiments applying quercetin to treat SCI. Based on the PICOS criteria, a total of 18 eligible studies were included, of which 14 were high quality. In this study, there was a gradual increase in effect based on the Basso, Beattie, and Bresnahan (BBB) score after three days (p < 0.0001). Furthermore, gender differences also appeared in the efficacy of quercetin; males performed better than females (p = 0.008). Quercetin was also associated with improved inclined plane test score (p = 0.008). In terms of biochemical indicators, meta-analysis showed that MDA (p < 0.0001) and MPO (p = 0.0002) were significantly reduced after quercetin administration compared with the control group, and SOD levels were increased (p = 0.004). Mechanistically, quercetin facilitates the inhibition of oxidative stress, inflammation, autophagy and apoptosis that occur after SCI. Generally, this systematic review suggests that quercetin has a neuroprotective effect on SCI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

50. Consideration in Randomized Placebo-Controlled Trial on Neck Pain to Avoid the Placebo Effect in Analgesic Action

Abstract

Background: In neck pain treatment, many therapies are focused on etiology, while it is well-known that placebo analgesia is also present in these therapies. The specific efficacy for etiology may be underestimated by ignoring their actual placebo effect. In this study, a logistic regression analysis is used to explore the risk factors causing different placebo responses in patients with neck pain among two RCTs. The probability of the placebo effect is predicted based on these risk factors.Methods: Trial A and Trial B were similarly designed, randomized, double-/single-blind, placebo-controlled trials in patients treating neck pain with Qishe pill or Shi-style manipulation. Both studies set a placebo pill twice a day or traction for every other day as control. For further analyses on the placebo effect in neck pain management, logistic regression was used to assess subgroup-placebo interactions. The odds ratio assessed a significant influence on the placebo effect.Results: In this pooled analysis, the total number of patients recruited for these two studies was 284, of which 162 patients received placebo treatment (placebo drug or traction for every other day). No statistically significant differences are found at baseline between the participants with placebo effect and non-placebo effect in the gender, age, and disease duration except in VAS and NDI at the initial time. There are numerically more patients with placebo effect in the shorter disease duration subgroup (< 4 months [76%]), higher initial VAS subgroup (>60 mm [90%]), and worse initial NDI subgroup (>24 [72%]) compared with the gender and age subgroup. An ROC curve is established to assess the model-data fit, which shows an area under the curve of 0.755 and a 95% confidence interval of 0.677–0.830. Participants who show placebo effect after 2 weeks have significantly lower VAS scores after 4 weeks, while there is no significant difference in NDI improvement between the two groups after 4 weeks.Conclusion: Neck pain patients with shorter disease duration are more likely to overscore their pain severity, because of their less experience in pain perception, tolerance, and analgesia expectation.
