Despite the enhanced spectral efficiency brought by the integrated radar and communication technique, it poses significant risks to communication security when confronted with malicious radar targets. To address this issue, a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided transmission scheme is proposed to improve secure communication in two systems, i.e., the radar and communication co-existing (RCCE) system, where a single transmitter is utilized for both radar sensing and communication, and the dual-functional radar and communication (DFRC) system. At the design stage, optimization problems are formulated to maximize the secrecy rate while satisfying the radar detection constraint via joint active beamforming at the base station and passive beamforming of RIS in both systems. Particularly, a zero-forcing-based block coordinate descent (BCD) algorithm is developed for the RCCE system. Besides, the Dinkelbach method combined with semidefinite relaxation is employed for the DFRC system, and to further reduce the computational complexity, a Riemannian conjugate gradient-based alternating optimization algorithm is proposed. Moreover, the RIS-aided robust secure communication in the DFRC system is investigated by considering the eavesdropper's imperfect channel state information (CSI), where a bounded uncertainty model is adopted to capture the angle error and fading channel error of the eavesdropper, and a tractable bound for their joint uncertainty is derived. Simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the developed RIS-aided transmission scheme to improve the secrecy rate even with the eavesdropper's imperfect CSI, and comparisons between both systems reveal that the RCCE system can provide a higher secrecy rate than the DFRC system., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures; To be published on IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications

Near field computational imaging has been recognized as a promising technique for non-destructive and highly accurate detection of the target. Meanwhile, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) can flexibly control the scattered electromagnetic (EM) fields for sensing the target and can thus help computational imaging in the near field. In this paper, we propose a near-field imaging scheme based on holograghic aperture RIS. Specifically, we first establish an end-to-end EM propagation model from the perspective of Maxwell equations. To mitigate the inherent ill conditioning of the inverse problem in the imaging system, we design the EM field patterns as masks that help translate the inverse problem into a forward problem. Next, we utilize RIS to generate different virtual EM masks on the target surface and calculate the cross-correlation between the mask patterns and the electric field strength at the receiver. We then provide a RIS design scheme for virtual EM masks by employing a regularization technique. The cross-range resolution of the proposed method is analyzed based on the spatial spectrum of the generated masks. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve high-quality imaging. Moreover, the imaging quality can be improved by generating more virtual EM masks, by increasing the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the receiver, or by placing the target closer to the RIS.

Electromagnetic (EM) skyrmions are an EM analogue of the skyrmions in condensed matter physics, which offer new degrees of freedom to structure light and manipulate light matter interactions and thus promise various groundbreaking applications in optics and photonics. Recently, there is a growing interest in composing EM skyrmions based on different field vectors of EM waves. Here, we realize an EM skyrmion, i.e., a spoof plasmonic skyrmion, using the electric field vectors of spoof localized surface plasmons (spoof LSPs) in a planar microwave resonator with rotational and mirroring symmetries. We construct the spoof plasmonic skyrmion, which holds a hedgehog-like configuration in its electric field vectors, by synthesizing a scalar vortex with a topological charge 0 in the out-of-plane component of the fields, and a polarization vortex with a topological charge 1 in the in-plane component of the fields. Besides an experimental demonstration of this skyrmion, we employ group representation theory and pinpoint the symmetry origin of the skyrmion. Such an investigation demonstrates the ubiquity of the existence of the skyrmion in any planar EM resonator holding rotational and mirroring symmetries, regardless the dimensions and the operating frequencies. The designed skyrmion not only promises novel microwave applications for sensing, processing, storing and transferring information, but also lays down a general guideline for devising skyrmions operating over a broad range in the EM spectra owing to the fact that the conducted symmetry investigation is independent of specific dimension or frequency.

Routing and guiding acoustic waves around sharp corners without backscattering losses is of great interest in the acoustics community. Sonic crystals have been primarily utilized to design backscattering-immune waveguides. While conventional approaches use defects to guide waves, a considerably more sophisticated and robust approach was recently developed based on topological edge states. In this paper, we propose a radically different theoretical framework based on extremely anisotropic metamaterials for engineering backscattering-immune waveguides. We theoretically derived the exact condition for one-way wave propagation in zigzag paths, and identified a number of key advantages of the current design over topologically protected waveguides. While the theoretical underpinning is universal and is applicable to acoustic and electromagnetic waves, the experimental validation was conducted using spoof surface acoustic waves. The proposed metamaterial could open up new possibilities for wave manipulation and lead to applications in on-chip devices and noise control.

Far-field imaging beyond the diffraction limit is a long sought-after goal in various imaging applications, which requires usually an array of antennas or mechanical scanning. Here, we present an alternative and novel concept for this challenging problem: a single radar system consisting of a spatial-temporal resonant aperture antenna (referred to as the slavery antenna) and a broadband horn antenna (termed the master antenna). We theoretically demonstrate that such resonant aperture antenna is responsible for converting parts of the evanescent waves into propagating waves, and delivering them to the far-field. We also demonstrate that there are three basic requirements on the proposed subwavelength imaging strategy: the strong spatial-temporal dispersive aperture, the near-field coupling, and the temporal (or broadband) illumination. Such imaging concept of a single radar provides unique ability to produce real-time data when an object is illuminated by broadband electromagnetic waves, which lifts up the harsh requirements such as near-field scanning, mechanical scanning or antenna arrays remarkably. We expect that this imaging methodology will make breakthroughs in super-resolution imaging in the microwave, terahertz, optical, and ultrasound regimes.

Essentially, the idea of improving the resolution of a given imaging system is to enhance its information capacity represented usually by the temporal-bandwidth (or, spatial-spectrum) product. This letter introduces the concept of super-resonant lens, and demonstrates theoretically that the information capacity of a far-field imaging system can be efficiently driven up when three basic requirements are satisfied: the super-resonance, the near-field coupling between imaged objects and the used super-resonant lens, and the broadband illumination, which leads to the subwavelength image of imaged objects from far-field measurements. Furthermore, a single-view imaging scheme is proposed and examined for the far-field imaging beyond the diffraction limit. This new approach will be a breakthrough in nanolithography, detection, sensing or sub-wavelength imaging in the near future.

The creation of wave-dynamic illusion functionality is of great interests to various scientific communities, which can potentially transform an actual perception into the pre-controlled perception, thus empowering unprecedented applications in the advanced-material science, camouflage, cloaking, optical and/or microwave cognition, and defense security, etc. By using the space transformation theory and engineering capability of metamaterials, we propose and realize a functional ghost illusion device, which is capable of creating wave-dynamic virtual ghost images off the original object's position under the illumination of electromagnetic waves. The scattering signature of the object is thus ghosted and perceived as multiple ghost targets with different geometries and compositions. The ghost-illusion material, being inhomogeneous and anisotropic, was realized by thousands of varying unit cells working at non-resonance. The experimental demonstration of the ghost illusion validates our theory of scattering metamorphosis and opens a novel avenue to the wave-dynamic illusion, cognitive deception, manipulate strange light or matter behaviors, and design novel optical and microwave devices., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures
