2. An Unsupervised Machine Learning Method for Electron--Proton Discrimination of the DAMPE Experiment

Abstract

Galactic cosmic rays are mostly made up of energetic nuclei, with less than $1\%$ of electrons (and positrons). Precise measurement of the electron and positron component requires a very efficient method to reject the nuclei background, mainly protons. In this work, we develop an unsupervised machine learning method to identify electrons and positrons from cosmic ray protons for the Dark Matter Particle Explorer (DAMPE) experiment. Compared with the supervised learning method used in the DAMPE experiment, this unsupervised method relies solely on real data except for the background estimation process. As a result, it could effectively reduce the uncertainties from simulations. For three energy ranges of electrons and positrons, 80--128 GeV, 350--700 GeV, and 2--5 TeV, the residual background fractions in the electron sample are found to be about (0.45 $\pm$ 0.02)$\%$, (0.52 $\pm$ 0.04)$\%$, and (10.55 $\pm$ 1.80)$\%$, and the background rejection power is about (6.21 $\pm$ 0.03) $\times$ $10^4$, (9.03 $\pm$ 0.05) $\times$ $10^4$, and (3.06 $\pm$ 0.32) $\times$ $10^4$, respectively. Abstract

The Forbush Decrease (FD) represents the rapid decrease of the intensities of charged particles accompanied with the coronal mass ejections (CMEs) or high-speed streams from coronal holes. It has been mainly explored with ground-based neutron monitors network which indirectly measure the integrated intensities of all species of cosmic rays by counting secondary neutrons produced from interaction between atmosphere atoms and cosmic rays. The space-based experiments can resolve the species of particles but the energy ranges are limited by the relative small acceptances except for the most abundant particles like protons and helium. Therefore, the FD of cosmic ray electrons and positrons have just been investigated by the PAMELA experiment in the low energy range ($<5$ GeV) with limited statistics. In this paper, we study the FD event occurred in September, 2017, with the electron and positron data recorded by the Dark Matter Particle Explorer. The evolution of the FDs from 2 GeV to 20 GeV with a time resolution of 6 hours are given. We observe two solar energetic particle events in the time profile of the intensity of cosmic rays, the earlier and weak one has not been shown in the neutron monitor data. Furthermore, both the amplitude and recovery time of fluxes of electrons and positrons show clear energy-dependence, which is important in probing the disturbances of the interplanetary environment by the coronal mass ejections., Comment: This article is dedicated to the 72nd anniversary of People's Republic of China

Abstract

Inland saline marshes in northeastern China have unique soil characteristics and population distribution features. Hydrological change is a critical environmental factor causing wetland degradation and soil salinization in this region. The growth and reproductive responses of typical wetland plants to dry-wet alternations are essential for restoring inland saline marshes. A pot experiment was conducted to study the growth and reproductive responses of Phragmites australis populations to three hydrological treatments simulating drought degradation (drought), permanent inundation restoration (flooding), and seasonal inundation restoration (dry-wet). The species showed different growth and reproductive responses to the three treatments. After 120 d, the drought conditions induced a lower biomass, root length and root surface area of P. australis, but with higher root diameter, soluble sugar, and Na+ ion contents. Flooding and alternating dry-wet treatments induced the opposite responses. Alternating dry-wet treatments can be considered a better solution to effectively conserve water and meet the water needs of P. australis in the current growing season. The biomass under the alternating wet and dry treatment was the same as that under flooding, but the number of rhizome shoots was lower. The alternating dry-wet treatments was able to recover the growth of P. australis in the current season, but the potential for asexual reproduction of the species was insufficient.

Abstract

Solar power generation has great development potential as an abundant and clean energy source. However, many factors affect the efficiency of the photovoltaic (PV) module; among these factors, outdoor PV modules are inevitably affected by stains, thus reducing the power generation efficiency of the PV panel. This paper proposes a framework for PV module stain detection based on UAV hyperspectral images (HSIs). The framework consists of two stain detection methods: constrained energy minimization (CEM)-based and orthogonal subspace projection (OSP)-based stain detection methods. Firstly, the contaminated PV modules are analyzed and processed to enhance the data's analytical capability. Secondly, based on the known spectral signature of the PV module, stain detection methods are proposed, including CEM-based stain detection and OSP-based stain detection for PV modules. The experimental results on real data illustrate that, in comparison with contrasting methods, the proposed method achieves stain detection results that closely align with known stain percentages. Abstract

In order to promote the localization of Automated Driving (AD) in China, it is necessary to collect large-scale traffic scene data with Chinese characteristic for future analysis. In this paper, we propose the methodologies and rules of establishing AD benchmark involving how to configure sensors, how to design the collection schema to show Chinese traffic characteristics and the rules of elaborating distinctive scenes and routes, what to label, and it is also demonstrated that the benchmark can support the future application of extended AD research. Data collection lasted about one month covering diverse scene data such as campus, highway, park, etc. from three representative Chinese cities and driving data from 30 different drivers. Moreover, some statistical results and analyses are produced in accordance with the designed methodologies as instances of potential application. Up to now, the dataset contains about 7,000 labelled image frames and corresponding LiDAR, GPS and Controller Area Network (CAN) data. Labels cover scene type, road user, traffic sign, traffic light, and lane marker. This benchmark can help researchers better understand Chinese traffic situation in aspects of environmental perception, driving behavior analysis, risk assessment, automated vehicle decision and control.

36. Adsorption and desorption characteristics of metal(oid)s in the yellow soils of a typical karst area, southwest China.

Abstract

Yellow soil is a type of soil rich in hydrated iron oxide that is extensively distributed in the typical karst areas of Guizhou Province, southwest China. Concomitantly, the higher contents of metal(oid)s are observed in the soil of karst areas in Guizhou Province, and there are few reports to study the inner relationship between local soil and metal(oid)s in the here. Hence, the present study mainly aimed to understand the adsorption and desorption characteristics of metal(oid)s in yellow soils of a typical karst area using kinetics and adsorption isotherms. The effects of temperature, pH and electrolytes on adsorption were also examined. The risk of metal(oid)s in soil was also evaluated by geoaccumulation and tomlinson pollution load indexes. The results showed that the pH value of yellow soil collected from Guizhou Province was 6.41, making it a weakly acidic soil, and the average concentrations of organic matter and CaCO3 were approximately 1.12% and 0.88%, respectively. The adsorption of metal(oid)s did not significantly vary with an increase in the CaCO3 concentration in the yellow soil. The metal(oid)s adsorption of the yellow soil improved with an increasing clay content. The Hg content in the yellow soil far exceeded the standard value (GB 15618–2018), with a corresponding cumulative evaluation of grade 1 according to the geoaccumulation index. Tomlinson pollution load indexes exhibited that the comprehensive score of the selected metal(oid)s in the yellow soil was 0.60, corresponding to no pollution. The adsorption behavior of As onto the yellow soil can be interpreted through pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir model, where the maximum adsorption was observed at 1318 mg/kg. The adsorption of most metal(oid)s increased with increasing temperature. The adsorption of Pb, Cr, Cu, Zn and As did not obviously fluctuate with an increasing NaNO3 concentration. Abstract

Motion planning in dynamic environment requires proactive response to other road users' intentions. While much progress has been made in intention-awareness methods, challenges remain for the motion planner to consider the uncertainty of intention estimation as well as other risk factors (e.g. the type and motion state of the obstacle). In this paper, we propose a novel motion planner based on safety-field and model predictive control (MPC). Driving-risk assessment is firstly conducted through safety-field based on probabilistic intention-inference with dynamic Bayesian network (DBN), the optimal controller then generates a feasible trajectory within the prediction horizon. Through simulations based on a cut-in situation and an intersection-passing scenario, the effectiveness of this method is demonstrated in enhancing driving safety with considerate motion planning strategy.

Abstract

A strip steel pad with a polyurethane board pad is suggested to improve the quality of multi-point die forming. In this work, the formability of four different forming processes, namely without a cushion, using a polyurethane pad, using a strip steel pad, and using a strip steel pad with a polyurethane board, was compared via numerical simulations and experiments. The results show that using a strip steel pad with a polyurethane board in multi-point die forming can effectively improve the stress and strain of the blank and suppress the defects of dimpling, straight edge, and wrinkling. This work demonstrates that the use of the strip steel pad with a polyurethane board in the multi-point forming process can improve the sheet forming conditions and quality.

Numerical simulations of a saddle-shaped workpiece formed with different transition region design schemes were performed with finite element analysis software and compared with the design without the transition region. The results show that the reasonable design of the transition region can effectively inhibit indentation and wrinkle defects in the sheet metal during the SMPF process. The values of stress and strain were found to be smaller with uniform distribution compared to the design without the transition region. The flow of sheet metal was also more uniform and the distribution of thickness more reasonable. Finally, a series of experiments on 2024 aluminum alloy sheet metal were tested on the multi-point forming press (MPF) to verify the accuracy of simulation results. The results conclusively prove that the reasonable transition region design can greatly improve the forming effect of sectional forming.

Abstract

In order to promote the localization of Automated Driving (AD) in China, it is necessary to collect large-scale traffic scene data with Chinese characteristic for future analysis. In this paper, we propose the methodologies and rules of establishing AD benchmark involving how to configure sensors, how to design the collection schema to show Chinese traffic characteristics and the rules of elaborating distinctive scenes and routes, what to label, and it is also demonstrated that the benchmark can support the future application of extended AD research. Data collection lasted about one month covering diverse scene data such as campus, highway, park, etc. from three representative Chinese cities and driving data from 30 different drivers. Moreover, some statistical results and analyses are produced in accordance with the designed methodologies as instances of potential application. Up to now, the dataset contains about 7,000 labelled image frames and corresponding LiDAR, GPS and Controller Area Network (CAN) data. Labels cover scene type, road user, traffic sign, traffic light, and lane marker. This benchmark can help researchers better understand Chinese traffic situation in aspects of environmental perception, driving behavior analysis, risk assessment, automated vehicle decision and control.
