2. Experimental study on the degradation of phenol by high efficiency three-dimensional electrode

Abstract

Phenolic compounds are toxic pollutants that are difficult to biodegrade. Electro-Fenton technique is one of the effective means to remove phenols. An Fe3O4-loaded carbon nanotube-modified nickel foam（Fe3O4/CNT/NF） particle electrode was prepared by the thermal solvent-coating-roasting method，which could generate both H2O2 and Fe2+ in the electrolytic system. A three-dimensional electrode electro-Fenton system was constructed with Fe3O4/CNT/NF as the particle electrode to degrade phenol，which has higher removal efficiency and lower energy consumption compared with the three-dimensional based on Fe3O4/NF and NF particle electrodes and two-dimensional electrode system. The reaction conditions were optimized，and the removal rate was 76.23% at degradation time of 60 min，plate spacing of 3.0 cm，Fe3O4/CNT/NF particles electrode dosage of 8.0 g/L，current of 350 mA，electrolyte concentration of 100 mmol/L，and initial pH of 4. The quenching test results showed that the hydroxyl radical（·OH） played a major role in the degradation process in this system. The electrode stability was excellent，and the phenol removal rate only decreased by 6.09% after six cycles.

13. Livelihood vulnerability of pastoral households in the semiarid grasslands of northern China: Measurement and determinants

Abstract

Livelihood vulnerability assessment has become an important policy tool for identifying groups in need of immediate intervention. Based on survey data covering 427 households in the Hulunbuir Grasslands in northern China, an indicator-based livelihood vulnerability assessment system (LVAS) was established by combining the sustainable livelihood framework and the exposure–sensitivity–adaptation framework, which described the livelihood vulnerability of households across the household life cycle in terms of the dimensions of exposure, sensitivity, and adaptation. A multiple linear regression model was used to identify the key variables that determine livelihood vulnerability. The results show that the livelihoods of pastoral households in the Hulunbuir Grasslands are moderately vulnerable overall, with a high level of exposure, a medium level of sensitivity, and a low level of adaptive capacity. As the household life cycle progresses (from the starting period to the empty-nest period), the adaptive capacity of pastoral households gradually decreases, and their livelihood vulnerability increases. The variables that most exacerbate the vulnerability of pastoral households’ livelihoods in this region are policy–ecological risks, climate–disaster risks and socioeconomic risks, and the main ways to reduce vulnerability are to improve these households’ productive capital, diversify their sources of livelihood, and improve their access to information. The results of the study provide empirical support for similar settings in different regions worldwide that aim to achieve a “win–win” situation of ecological conservation and sustainable livelihood development.

21. Rainfall‐Driven Extreme Snowmelt Will Increase in the Tianshan and Pamir Regions Under Future Climate Projection

Abstract

Snowmelt and related extreme events can have profound natural and societal impacts. However, the studies on projected changes in snow‐related extremes across the Tianshan Mountains (TS) and Pamir regions have been underexplored. Utilizing regional climate model downscaling and bias‐corrected CMIP6 data, this study examined the changes in snowmelt and water available for runoff (SMROS, rainfall plus snowmelt) during the cold seasons across these regions for historical (1994–2014) and future (2040–2060) periods under shared socioeconomic pathway (SSP) scenarios (SSP245 and SSP585). The results demonstrated that accumulated snowmelt was projected to rise by 17.98% and 20.36%, whereas SMROScould increase by 26.97% and 28.95%, respectively, under SSP245 and SSP585 scenarios. Despite relatively minimal changes in extreme snowmelt, the magnitude of the historical daily maximum extreme SMROS(10‐year return level) was 28.04 mm and was expected to increase by 15.32% and 15.31% under the SSP245 and SSP585 scenarios, respectively, especially in western TS exceeding 26%. Meanwhile, areas with a daily extreme SMROSexceeding 50 mm could rise by over 13.5%. A notable rise in daily extreme SMROSand its area occupation in high intensity highlighted an increased risk of rainfall‐driven extreme snowmelt events. The absolute increase in snowfall and frequent snow‐rain phase transitions during the cold season under climate warming (SSP245: 2.19°C and SSP585: 2.22°C) benefits the increase in high‐intensity rain‐on‐snow events, leading to extreme SMROSaugmentation. The findings emphasize the significant role of rainfall‐trigger snowmelt events in exacerbating extreme snowmelt in a warming climate.
