2. Calculation of the specific heat in ultra-thin free-standing silicon membranes

Abstract

The specific heat of ultra-thin free-standing membranes is calculated using the elastic continuum model. We first obtain the dispersion relations of the discrete set of acoustic modes in the system. The specific heat is then calculated by summing over the discrete out-of-plane wavevector component and integrating over the continuous in-plane wavevector of these waves. In the low-temperature regime (T < 4 K), the flexural polarization is seen to have the highest contribution to the total specific heat. This leads to a linear dependence with temperature, resulting in a larger specific heat for the membrane compared to that of the bulk counterpart

Abstract

We study the relaxation of coherent acoustic phonon modes with frequencies up to 500 GHz in ultra-thin free-standing silicon membranes. Using an ultrafast pump-probe technique of asynchronous optical sampling, we observe that the decay time of the first-order dilatational mode decreases significantly from \sim 4.7 ns to 5 ps with decreasing membrane thickness from \sim 194 to 8 nm. The experimental results are compared with theories considering both intrinsic phonon-phonon interactions and extrinsic surface roughness scattering including a wavelength-dependent specularity. Our results provide insight to understand some of the limits of nanomechanical resonators and thermal transport in nanostructures.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Nurses play an essential role in patient safety. Inadequate nursing physical assessment and communication in handover practices are associated with increased patient deterioration, falls and pressure injuries. Despite internationally implemented rapid response systems, falls and pressure injury reduction strategies, and recommendations to conduct clinical handovers at patients' bedside, adverse events persist. This trial aims to evaluate the effectiveness, implementation, and cost-benefit of an externally facilitated, nurse-led intervention delivered at the ward level for core physical assessment, structured patient-centred bedside handover and improved multidisciplinary communication. We hypothesise the trial will reduce medical emergency team calls, unplanned intensive care unit admissions, falls and pressure injuries. METHODS: A stepped-wedge cluster randomised trial will be conducted over 52 weeks. The intervention consists of a nursing core physical assessment, structured patient-centred bedside handover and improved multidisciplinary communication and will be implemented in 24 wards across eight hospitals. The intervention will use theoretically informed implementation strategies for changing clinician behaviour, consisting of: nursing executive site engagement; a train-the-trainer model for cascading facilitation; embedded site leads; nursing unit manager leadership training; nursing and medical ward-level clinical champions; ward nurses' education workshops; intervention tailoring; and reminders. The primary outcome will be a composite measure of medical emergency team calls (rapid response calls and 'Code Blue' calls), unplanned intensive care unit admissions, in-hospital falls and hospital-acquired pressure injuries; these measures individually will also form secondary outcomes. Abstract

Honeybees are an important part of agricultural ecosystems due to their activity as pollinators. In the scope of bee colony losses reported from some regions, there is an intense ongoing discussion about the multiple factors potentially affecting bee health. One of the factors central in these public debate is pesticides. In the context of this discussion, regulatory authorities in many countries are considering howto revise their national assessment schemes to evaluate the safety of pesticides to bees. It is important that risk assessment systems are globally as consistent as possible. They need to be protective, scientifically robust, yet pragmatic, easy to interpret and implement. This review outlines a risk assessment system which fulfills these criteria. The system presented is based on the principles of the EPPO (European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization) 170 Approach which is successfully used in Europe and is demonstrably protective. It is a tiered, hierarchical system relying on internationally validated study designs. The goal isprotection of the bee colony, its health and productivity. The higher-tier assessment is based on semi-field and field studies. Such studies provide direct evidence in cases where the lower-tier laboratory-based assessment did not yield conclusive results, and they include the option to consider realistic exposure scenarios in specific cases. For the bee-safe use of crop protection products, risk management is critical as a measure to minimize exposure; therefore risk management and risk mitigation are integral to the proposed scheme. Abstract

The physiological mechanisms that confer different outcomes in morbidity and mortality of the fetus exposed to stressful environments may be driven by significant differences in the expression and function of the placental glucocorticoid receptor (GR). The recent discovery that the placenta contains at least 8 different isoforms of the GR raises questions about the regulation and physiological relevance of the many GR variants expressed in the placenta. The current data also highlights that individual differences in glucocorticoid sensitivity, variations in the effect of different complications of pregnancy on birth outcomes and sex differences in the response to stress, may all be dependent on a specific GR isoform expression profile. This review will investigate the current state of knowledge of GR isoforms in the placenta and discuss the potential role of these multiple isoforms in regulating glucocorticoid sensitivity.Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd

Abstract

Because reproduction is essential for all life, it is central to our understanding of all aspects of biology. The Society for Reproductive Biology (SRB) 2016 conference held on the Gold Coast (Qld, Australia) displayed the current breadth of reproductive research in Australia and New Zealand, with additional insights from world leaders in the field. This conference review provides a focused summary of the key questions, emerging ideas and novel technologies that were presented in the symposia. Presented research demonstrated key advances in how stem cell biology may allow us to better understand pluripotency, as well as how environmental and lifestyle factors, such as circadian disruption, smoking, alcohol and diet, affect gametogenesis, embryo implantation, placental function and reproductive capacity. Sessions also highlighted the role of reproductive biology in providing insight into the mechanisms and processes governing a wide range of biological science disciplines, including cancer research and therapies, oncofertility, conservation of native species and chronic non-communicable diseases. Recurring themes included the importance of male and female gamete quality for reproductive potential and the critical and varied roles of the placenta in the maintenance of a healthy pregnancy. Dysregulation of reproductive processes can contribute to a variety of pathological states that affect future health, fertility and fecundity. Research being conducted by the SRB has the potential to shape not only the fertility of the current generation, but also the health and reproductive viability of future generations.

Abstract

The acoustic phonon dispersion curves of ~10 and ~30 nm Si membranes were measured using Brillouin Light Scattering (BLS) spectroscopy. The dispersion relations of the confined phonons were calculated from a semianalytical model based on continuum elasticity theory. Green’s function simulations were used to simulate both the phonon density of states and Brillouin spectra of themembranes. The effect of the native oxide layer was also considered, and found to affect significantly the dispersion of the higher order modes.

47. Advanced space engine preliminary design

Abstract

A preliminary design was completed for an O2/H2, 89 kN (20,000 lb) thrust staged combustion rocket engine that has a single-bell nozzle with an overall expansion ratio of 400:1. The engine has a best estimate vacuum specific impulse of 4623.8 N-s/kg (471.5 sec) at full thrust and mixture ratio = 6.0. The engine employs gear-driven, low pressure pumps to provide low NPSH capability while individual turbine-driven, high-speed main pumps provide the system pressures required for high-chamber pressure operation. The engine design dry weight for the fixed-nozzle configuration is 206.9 kg (456.3 lb). Engine overall length is 234 cm (92.1 in.). The extendible nozzle version has a stowed length of 141.5 cm (55.7 in.). Critical technology items in the development of the engine were defined. Development program plans and their costs for development, production, operation, and flight support of the ASE were established for minimum cost and minimum time programs.
