The Institute of Jazz Studies (IJS) started the Jazz Archives Fellows program in 2012 with two purposes in mind. First, the program focuses on improving diversity in the archives profession. Second, it provides a meaningful professional development opportunity for archivists in the early stages of their careers and for students in graduate programs who intend to become archivists. In addition, the IJS benefits directly from the fellows' work to process a collection and create a digital project. This article presents a case study of the Fellowship with a focus on program design, values, and lessons learned and includes recommendations for establishing similar programs.

Introduction: The rapid increase on life-expectancy represents a major challenge and economic burden for modern societies. Several studies have focused on the effects of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) upon the immune system; however less attention has been paid to the effects of monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA). In this work we investigated the relationship of habitual consumption of different types of fatty acids with different immune parameters in the elderly. Subjects and methods: 40 institutionalized elderly (76-95 y) and 35 home-living middle-age subjects (57-65 y) were recruited. Dietary intakes of macronutrients, fiber and fatty acids, as well as immune parameters such as serum cytokines levels (IL-10, TNF-α, IL-8, IL-17, TGF-β and IL-12), phagocytic activity and cytotoxic NK activity, were determined. Results: Elderly subjects had a lower intake of total lipids. MUFA intake was significantly lower in the elderly group than in middle-age adults whilst the contrary was true for PUFA. MUFA intake in the elderly was found to be positively associated with IL-12 (β = 0.879) and TNF-α (β = 0.789) serum concentrations, whilst PUFA intake was inversely related to levels of IL-12 (β = -0.534). These associations were not observed in the middle-age group. Conclusion: MUFA intake may contribute to the pro-inflammatory status present in the elderly. El objetivo general de la presente investigaci?n fue estudiar la relaci?n entre la comunicaci?n radial y la integraci?n comunitaria que puede llegar a darse en la parroquia Cunchibamba, en el Cant?n Ambato de la Provincia de Tungurahua. A partir de esto el enfoque con el cual se trabajo fue cuali-cuantitativa, sustentada con una investigaci?n bibliogr?fica donde se obtuve informaci?n de libros, art?culos cient?ficos sobre las variables de estudio, adem?s de campo donde la poblaci?n a estudiar fueron los habitantes de la Parroquia de Cunchibamba, a quienes se les formulo una encuesta, a fin de conocer su posici?n en cuanto a la comunicaci?n radial e integraci?n comunitaria. Con estos antecedentes se propuso la creaci?n de un espacio de comunicaci?n en radio para promover la integraci?n comunitaria en la Parroquia de Cunchibamba.

Póster presentado en el VI Workshop Probióticos, Prebióticos y Salud: Evidencia Científica, celebrado en Oviedo, España, el 5 y 6 de febrero de 2015, Our group has recently reported an intestinal dysbiosis, with a lower Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio, in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), autoimmune disease in which inflammation and oxidative stress could be involved. The aim of this study was to compare the serum levels of antioxidants, malondialdehyde (MDA) and C-reactive protein (CRP), and to evaluate their association with intestinal microbiota, in 26 women suffering from SLE and 27 age-matched controls. Serum concentration of CRP was determined by enzymatic methods, folic acid and vitamin B12 by chemiluminescence; copper, zinc and selenium by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and MDA and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) by spectrophotometric methods. Intestinal microbiota profile was evaluated by Ion Torrent 16S rRNA gene-based analysis. Results did not reveal increased levels of lipoperoxidation and CRP in SLE subjects compared to controls. Higher concentration of serum copper and lower of zinc was found in these patients in comparison with controls. Also, CRP was found directly associated with serum copper and Verrucomicrobia levels, whereas zinc was indirectly associated with Fimicutes. These results could be useful in the future to go deeper into the understanding of this complex disease.

Trabajo presentado en el VI Workshop Probióticos, Prebióticos y Salud: Evidencia Científica, celebrado en Oviedo (España) el 5 y 6 de febrero de 2015, Our group has recently proved the existence of a gut microbial dysbiosis in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), resulting in differences in the ratio Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes, and supporting previous evidence involving intestinal bacteria in the initiation and amplification of inflammatory processes and autoimmune diseases. While several studies have addressed the use of dietary fibres to modify intestinal microbial populations, information about other highly correlated components, such as polyphenols, is scarce. The aim of this work was the identification of dietary components able to influence this altered microbiota in 20 women suffering from SLE and 20 age-matched controls. Food intake was recorded by means of a food frequency questionnaire. Energy was calculated from CESNID food composition tables and Phenol-Explorer was used for polyphenol intake. Results showed positive associations between flavone intake and Blautia, flavanones and Lactobacillus and dihydrochalcones and Bifidobacterium in the SLE group. Regarding the controls, dihydroflavonols were directly associated with Faecalibacterium, whereas flavonol intake was inversely associated with Bifidobacterium. From the food sources of these polyphenols related to microbiota, orange intake was directly associated with Lactobacillus and apple with Bifidobacterium in SLE, whilst red wine was the best contributor to Faecalibacterum variation. The association between common foods and particular microbial genera, reported to be decreased in SLE, could be of great importance for these patients

Introducción: El rápido aumento de la esperanza de vida en las sociedades desarrolladas representa un gran desafío y supone una elevada carga económica. Numerosos trabajos han estudiado los efectos de los ácidos grasos poliinsaturados (AGP) sobre el sistema inmune, sin embargo los efectos de los ácidos grasos monoinsaturados (AGM) han recibido mucha menos atención. En este trabajo se investigó la relación del consumo habitual de los diferentes tipos de ácidos grasos con diversos parámetros inmunológicos en ancianos. Individuos y métodos: Se reclutaron 40 ancianos institucionalizados (79-95 años) y 35 individuos de mediana edad (57-65 años) que residían en sus hogares. Se determinó la ingesta diaria de macronutrientes, fibra y ácidos grasos, así como diversos parámetros inmunes; niveles séricos de citoquinas (IL-10, TNF-α, IL-8, IL-17, TGF-β, IL-12), actividad fagocítica y actividad citotóxica de células NK. Resultados: Los voluntarios ancianos presentaron una menor ingesta de lípidos totales. La ingesta de AGM fue significativamente menor en el grupo de ancianos que en los adultos de mediana edad, mientras que lo contrario fue cierto para los AGP. La ingesta de AGM en ancianos se asoció positivamente con las concentraciones de IL-12 (β = 0,879) y TNF-α (β = 0,789), mientras que la ingesta de AGP mostró una relación inversa con los niveles de IL-12 (β = -0,534). Estas asociaciones no fueron observadas en el grupo de mediana edad. Conclusión: La ingesta de AGM podría contribuir al estado pro-inflamatorio presente en los ancianos. Sería aconsejable desarrollar recomendaciones nutricionales específicas para ancianos teniendo en cuenta parámetros inmunológicos.

Based on the relevance of the intestinal microbiota on health, this article is focused on the effect of diet, and its components on modulating the activity of the colonic flora. There are evidences regarding the effects of different prebiotics, as fructo-oligosaccharides (FOS), galact-oligosaccharides (GOS), inulin and resistant starch, on the microbiota modulation and some of its metabolites. In addition, it will be highlighted the importance of other compounds associated with fibre intake, as polyphenols, whose prebiotic/antimicrobial effects remains to be elucidated. Future studies analysing the influence of probiotics and prebiotics on the microbial populations should include a detailed polyphenol intake.

Electroacoustic music, created in a digital environment without using traditional notation on paper, relies on the use of technology for its interpretation and performance. The widespread use of this compositional technique challenges archivists to guarantee the long-term preservation and access to the original sonic experience of these creative works which can be thought of as born-digital records. Composers often rely on a combination of commercial software and home-grown hardware to create electroacoustic compositions, and performance becomes the only avenue of experiencing the work as a whole. This music is slowly disappearing since standards for its long-term access have not been developed and the creators are not taking a proactive approach to move into a sustainable access model. This paper reports on the results of a recently completed study of electronic music collections in libraries and archives across the United States to establish the span of such collections, current collection strategies, and relevant preservation strategies. This study lays the foundation of future preservation and effective long-term access initiatives for born-digital music as well as similar born-digital artistic works.

Many libraries, museums, and archives rely on volunteer staff to enhance workforce potential, to carry out fundraising and education duties, and to help connect with users. While a general search on volunteerism in library literature yields a myriad of articles and booklets on volunteer programs and management know-how, the Internet also offers quality resources and practical information that can be of use to any archivist working with volunteers.
