Abstract

This paper presents the results of a study exploring the potential of magnetic-susceptibility and phosphate soil analyses to locate and characterize buried Neolithic settlements in Thessaly, Greece. Using the preliminary results of large-area magnetometer surveys, soil samples were collected at three well-known sites along exploratory lines and augers targeting the locations of possible features of interest, including habitational structures and enclosures. The results demonstrated the capability of these analyses to detect the sites, outline hotspots and better interpret the features identified in the magnetometer results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This open access volume showcases the intersection of geophysics and archaeology on a global scale, emphasising the evolution and application of geophysical methods in archaeological research and cultural heritage management. It compiles contributions from 74 experts based in 18 countries, with their research and case studies spanning across 24 different countries, focusing on the use of near-surface geophysical techniques and their integration with soil analyses and other methods to enrich archaeological interpretations. Prepared under the auspices of the collaborative network fostered by COST Action SAGA - CA17131, this work navigates through the successes and challenges encountered in the widespread adoption of archaeo-geophysical methods across diverse geographic and cultural landscapes. It offers a comprehensive chronicle of the genesis, maturation, and cutting-edge advancements in geophysical techniques, advocating for their amplified integration within the archaeological community. Incorporating an array of case studies and critical discussions on methodological and interpretive questions, the book underscores the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration, and defines perspectives for innovation and growth within the field. As an open-access work, 'WORLD ARCHAEO-GEOPHYSICS' aims to contribute to the democratisation of knowledge, fostering shared learning and cooperative engagement among professionals, academics, students and archaeology enthusiasts alike. 19. Soil geochemical methods in archaeo‐geophysics: Exploring a combined approach at sites in Scotland.

Abstract

This article explores the application of geophysical and soil geochemical methods to detect archaeological features in three traditionally 'difficult' survey environments in Scotland: wind‐blown sands (Bay of Skaill, Orkney), clay (Chesterhall Parks Farm, Lanarkshire) and glacial drift deposits (Forteviot, Perthshire). The results presented here are part of the first research project that systematically tested a combined approach using geophysical and soil characterisation to understand the proxy responses of known archaeological features. First, a range of geophysical techniques [earth resistance, magnetometry, frequency domain electromagnetics (FDEM) and ground‐penetrating radar (GPR)] was employed over archaeological targets. Second, the different geophysical results were considered with respect to soil chemical concentrations (total phosphate and multi‐element analysis), texture, pH, conductivity, organic matter content and magnetic susceptibility from archaeological deposits, topsoil and subsoil samples. This study demonstrates that, by focusing on the responses of single archaeological features and assessing their physical and chemical signatures, soil composition and processes involved in the 'history' of buried features are of importance in improving our understanding of the reasons behind their detection with geophysical means. For example, at the cropmark site at Forteviot, chemical transformations can be triggered by organic matter accumulation and increased water retention within prehistoric ditch deposits and can have an effect on the type of magnetic contrast. In addition, chemical concentrations revealing anthropogenic organic materials can explain the enhanced conductivity of theoretically impervious features, as illustrated at the Bay of Skaill site. The study also provide insights into how a particular soil environment may affect different geophysical techniques such as the masking effects of heterogeneous glacial drift deposits or deep windblown sands. These types of survey environments characterise many archaeologically rich areas in Scotland, where integrated strategies, such as the one used in this investigation, are the best option to maximise detection of subsurface features and provide confident and augmented interpretations. 24. Geochemical survey of soil samples from the archaeological site Dromolaxia-Vyzakia(Cyprus), by means of micro-XRFand statistical approaches

Abstract

During the 13thand 12thcenturies BCE, Dromolaxia - Vyzakia(Hala Sultan Tekke) was a flourishing coastal settlement located at the shores of the Larnaca salt lake and for this reason the site has attracted a great deal of scholarly interest. Evidence of ceramic, ivory and metal manufacturing processes supports the belief that this site was not only a location active in trade, but also an important crafts centre. Despite the fact that a significant number of archaeological missions invested considerable time and expertise to study the site, its spatial extent and makeup is still not fully understood. Significant efforts are currently underway to reveal the extent of the whole settlement and to pinpoint possible anthropogenic activities. The detection of intriguing magnetic anomalies during a preliminary geophysical survey over an unexcavated area adjacent to the main excavation, and the presence of nearby surface scattered slag fragments, suggested further investigation. These locations were ideal for an extensive geochemical survey through micro-XRFmeasurements. Therefore, an extensive geochemical survey, the objective of this study, was carried out to measure concentrations of elements (K, Ca, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, and Zn) using a micro-XRF. Soil samples were collected at an excavated area of known anthropogenic activity as well as from other unexcavated areas including the one assessed by the geophysical survey. Results were analyzed with the method of principal components analysis (PCA) and Pearson's correlation coefficients focusing on the identification of possible patterns amongst sampling areas. The site's normal background concentration values (NBC) were also determined in order to evaluate elemental enhancement by enrichment factors. The statistical analysis of results indicated the impact of metalworking or other related processes in the soil's chemistry. In addition, it identified elements that can be attributed to anthropogenic activities (K, Ca, Ni, Cu, and Zn) and also corroborated with the geophysical data highlighting specific zones where future archaeological efforts should focus.
