Interaction with fishing gears represents the main anthropogenic threat at sea for sea turtles worldwide, and identifying the hotspots of turtle bycatch is a priority knowledge gap.Turtle stranding data represent a source of information about mortality areas at sea that are not fully exploited. This study aims to infer turtle mortality areas of turtles stranded along the Italian Adriatic Coast in the period 2019–2021 (1432 records), through backtrack modelling of carcasses. Specifically, the decomposition process of eight loggerhead carcasses was monitored, and the relationship between floating period (FP), turtle size and sea temperature was modelled through a generalized additive model. Oceanographic information was then used to track the routes of floating carcasses back, knowing their size and decomposition stage, and finally estimate the likely area of mortality. A complementary numerical experiment of connectivity between coastal and offshore areas gave indication that areas of potential mortality are relatively close to the coast, particularly in the northern Adriatic.Stranded turtles probably represent just a small fraction (17%–25%) of total at‐sea mortalities in the study area (Italian Adriatic waters), with decomposition rates, season and distance from shore influencing their stranding likelihood. Hence, strandings can inform only about spatio‐temporal variability of coastal mortality hotspots.Inferred areas of turtle mortality were most likely located in the North and Central Adriatic all over the year and overlap with heatmaps of fishing effort, obtained from vessel monitoring system (VMS) and automatic identification system (AIS) data, in the Gulf of Manfredonia and in the North‐West Adriatic in the cold (September–December) and warm (May–August) periods, respectively. The interannual variability of the physical properties of the shelf waters in Sardinia, western Mediterranean Sea, is studied by using hydrological data gathered during three oceanographic cruises: two in late summer of 2019 and 2021 respectively and another one in early autumn of 2020. The data consist of vertical profiles of salinity and potential temperature acquired by a multiparametric probe for a total of 171 casts performed along a set of transects extending from the nearshore to the continental slope, up to the depth of 200 m. Satellite remote sensing and numerical modelling oceanographic products support the phenomenological analysis. Atlantic Water, characterised by low salinity signatures (S<37.0), is detected in the surface waters of the southwestern shelf areas, induced by the Algerian Eddies, and with differences between years. It is also observed on the southern-eastern and north-eastern shelf areas of Sardinia, mainly driven by the interaction with large-scale circulation features like the southeast Sardinia Gyre and the Bonifacio Gyre. An upwelling phenomenology is identified as one of the major features of the coastal circulation on the western shelf area. The study provides the first assessment of the thermohaline features on the Sardinian shelf; an enhanced contribution to the current knowledge of the coastal sea phenomena, and contributes to numerical modelling applications and implementations for ecosystem services. The presence and interannual variability of water masses on the continental shelf surrounding the island of Sardinia are described from three multidisciplinary cruises carried out in September 2019, late August 2020 and September 2021 in the framework of the IDMAR project. A multiparametric probe acquired CTD data along vertical profiles at a total of 166 casts located from the near-shore to the continental slope, between the surface and 300 m depth. The analyses of these observations are for the first time identifying the water mass phenomenology on the Sardinia shelf characterized by the presence of the Atlantic Water at the surface. It shows a mild interannual variability and an unusually low salinity < 37.0 at 35 m on the southwestern approaches, detected during the cruises in 2019 and 2021, and driven by the Algerian eddies. On the southern and eastern shelf, the presence of the Atlantic Water is marked by a salinity of about 38.0, and the water column is affected by the temporal and spatial variability of the South East Sardinia Gyre. These observations are opening new aspects to understand the long-term evolution of the hydrology around Sardinia in the context of the general circulation of the Western Mediterranean basin. Over a hundred experiments were conducted between 1998 and 2022 in the Mediterranean Sea using surface Lagrangian drifters at coastal and offshore levels. Raw data were initially unified and pre-processed manually by eliminating spikes and wrong positions or date/time information. The integrity of the received data packages was checked, and incomplete ones were discarded. Deployment information was retrieved for each drifter and integrated into the PostgreSQL database, realized and maintained by the National Institute of Oceanography and Applied Geophysics (OGS) in Trieste (Italy). This database also collects a variety of metadata about the drifter model, project, owner, and operator. Subsequently, data were processed using standard procedures of editing and quality control developed for the OGS drifter dataset to remove spikes generated by malfunctioning of the sensors and to obtain files with common characteristics. Drifter data and plots of each track were also visually checked to remove any point not identified by the automatic procedure and which were clearly erroneous. Drifter trajectories were split into two or more segments that are considered different deployments in the case of specific drifter behaviour. Data were interpolated at defined time intervals providing a dataset of 158 trajectories, available from the public open-access repository of SEA scieNtific Open data Edition (SEANOE) at 10.17882/90537 (Ribotti et al., 2022), in two versions (one compliant with the Copernicus format and the other one usable with Panoply netCDF viewer), and of SeaDataNet at https://cdi.seadatanet.org/search/welcome.php?query=2610&query%5fcode={9F00DF80-1881-42DD-9DF1-B9BD0282F2B0} (last access: 5 October 2023).
