Abstract

Liquid-nitrogen (LN 2 ) circulation systems with altitude variation are investigated and designed for application to practical long-length HTS cables. This study is motivated by the KEPCO’s immediate plan to install new HTS cables in existing utility tunnels including inclined and vertical sections. The distribution of pressure and temperature along the LN 2 circulation loop is examined for various geographic conditions, taking into account the gravitational effect of altitude variation. The cryogenic cooling requirements are defined in terms of the pressure and temperature of LN 2 , and a design process is graphically demonstrated on phase diagram. It is concluded that the LN 2 flow rate along the cable with altitude variation should be carefully determined with the constraints on pressure and temperature, and the proposed graphical method is useful in the design. Abstract

International audience; The superconducting fragment separator (Super-FRS) of facility for antiproton and ion research (FAIR) located in Darmstadt, Germany, requires three branched superferric dipoles which are more complex than the 21 standard dipoles already designed by Commissariat l'Energie Atomique et aux nergies alternatives (CEA). The 50-ton branched dipoles allow the beam of particles to be directed towards the different branches of the separator. The final design proposed by CEA Paris-Saclay for these dipoles integrates features required for the installation of the Y-shaped vacuum chamber which have an impact on the magnetic and mechanical design of the magnet. The coil casing design was modified and the cold-to-warm supports had to be reorganized to contain the Laplace forces acting on the weakened mechanical structure. Cryogenic experiments have been conducted to characterize the behavior of the active thermosiphon concept and to validate the cryogenic design proposed last year. We present in this paper the final design for the FAIR Super-FRS branched dipole magnets along with the design simulation results (magnetic, cryogenic, and mechanical analyses) and the main results of the active thermosiphon tests conducted recently.

Abstract

The system design of a cryogenic 2-13 GHz feed is considered with emphasis on its application in future wideband radio telescope systems. The feed is based on the so-called Eleven antenna and the design requires careful integration of various sub-designs in order to realize cryogenic operation. The various sub-designs include the electrical design of the Eleven antenna, design of the critical center puck, alternative solutions for integrating the Eleven antenna with low-noise amplifiers (LNAs), mechanical and cryogenic design and tests, and system noise temperature estimation and measurements. A great deal of simulated and measured results are presented throughout this paper, including the electrical, mechanical and cryogenic performance, and an assessment of the system noise temperature. The objective of this work is to present a good feed candidate that is well-suited for VLBI2010 and SKA radio telescopes. Further developments needed to completely fulfill the requirements for these future wideband radio telescopes are also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A large worldwide collaboration is growing around the project of Micro-calorimeter Arrays for a Rhenium Experiment (MARE) for a direct calorimetric measurement of the neutrino mass. To validate the use of cryogenic detectors by checking the presence of unexpected systematic errors, two first experiments are planned using the available techniques composed of arrays of 300 detectors to measure 1010 events in a reasonable time of 3 years (step MARE-1) to reach a sensitivity on the neutrino mass of ∼2 eV/c2. Our experiment in Milan is based on compensated doped silicon implanted thermistor arrays made in NASA/GSFC and on AgReO4 crystals. We present here the design of the cryogenic system that integrates all the requirements for such experiment (electronics for high impedances, low parasitic capacitances, low micro-phonic noise).

Abstract

Low-temperature electronic systems require electrical leads which have low electrical resistance to provide bias current Ibias without excessive voltage drop Vlead. But proper cryogenic design also requires high thermal resistance to maintain a minimal heat leak Q from the hot temperature Thot to the cold temperature Tcold. By the Wiedemann-Franz law, these requirements are in direct conflict, and the optimal configuration takes a particularly simple universal approximate form for the common case that Tcold << Thot: Qmin/Ibias ≈ Vlead ≈ 3.6 kBThot/e. This is applied here to the cryopackaging of RSFQ superconducting circuits on a 4 K cryocooler, but is equally applicable to other cryogenic systems such as superconducting sensor arrays at low and ultra-low temperatures. © 2006 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
