- Abstract
Problem Statement: The problem addressed in this study was the experience of Latinx women leaders from multiple Southern California state universities who cry, or have been close to crying, about work in front of colleagues or followers. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand the experience of Latinx women leaders, who held administrative or full-time faculty positions from multiple Southern California state universities who experienced crying in the workplace. Theoretical Framework: The theoretical framework used in this qualitative study was social constructivism. Methodology: Using transcendental phenomenology, semi-structured interviews were conducted with three Latinx women leaders from multiple Southern California state universities who cried or had been close to crying about work in front of colleagues or followers. Findings: The data indicate that crying at work was the result of varied barriers in the workplace. The barriers caused participants to seek out support systems, experience vulnerability, eventually discover insights about themselves and their professional careers, and develop hope about future occurrences of crying at work. Conclusions and Recommendations: Current data indicate that major themes include barriers, support systems, vulnerability, discovery, and hope. Recommendations from the results of this study include acknowledging and supporting emotional labor in higher education, emotion-centered training opportunities in higher education, that crying does not mean that a leader is ineffective, and that leaders should be different than one another.
