In the field of facial emotion recognition, early research advanced with the use of Gabor filters. However, these filters lack generalization and result in undesirably large feature vector size. In recent work, more attention has been given to other local appearance features. Two desired characteristics in a facial appearance feature are generalization capability, and the compactness of representation. In this paper, we propose a novel texture feature inspired by Gabor energy filters, called background suppressing Gabor energy filtering. The feature has a generalization component that removes background texture. It has a reduced feature vector size due to maximal representation and soft orientation histograms, and it is awhite box representation. We demonstrate improved performance on the non-trivial Audio/Visual Emotion Challenge 2012 grand-challenge dataset by a factor of 7.17 over the Gabor filter on the development set. We also demonstrate applicability of our approach beyond facial emotion recognition which yields improved classification rate over the Gabor filter for four bioimaging datasets by an average of 8.22%.

Affective computing - the emergent field in which computers detect emotions and project appropriate expressions of their own - has reached a bottleneck where algorithms are not able to infer a person's emotions from natural and spontaneous facial expressions captured in video. While the field of emotion recognition has seen many advances in the past decade, a facial emotion recognition approach has not yet been revealed which performs well in unconstrained settings. In this paper, we propose a principled method which addresses the temporal dynamics of facial emotions and expressions in video with a sampling approach inspired from human perceptual psychology. We test the efficacy of the method on the Audio/Visual Emotion Challenge 2011 and 2012, Cohn-Kanade and the MMI Facial Expression Database. The method shows an average improvement of 9.8 percent over the baseline for weighted accuracy on the Audio/Visual Emotion Challenge 2011 video-based frame-level subchallenge testing set.

There are many available methods to measure the human energy consumption. Due to the high cost and small number of laboratories able to perform it, the direct calorimetry and doubly labeled water technique are rarely used to measure the energy expenditure. As consequence, there is an increase use of the indirect calorimetry and bioelectrical impedance analysis methods by researchers and predictive equations by physicians to calculate the total energy requirements in research and in clinic. Objective: To evaluate the basal energy expenditure (GEB) and total energy expenditure (GET) of healthy subjects comparing results of indirect calorimetry (CI), bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and predictive equations such as estimated energy requirements (EER), Fleish, FAO/WHO/UNU 1985 and 2001. Material and methods: It was evaluated the energy expenditure in 81 subjects of both gender by CI and BIA. Of these, the GEB by predictive equations FAO/WHO/UNU 1985 and 2001 and the GET by EER, Fleisch and FAO/WHO/UNU 1985 and 2001 were calculated. The data was analyzed with the software Sigma Stat for Windows version 2.03 and Dunn's test was used for comparison of mean obtained with methods and equations (p < 0.05). Results: It was verified that 60.5% of the participants were men. The majority of subjects were eutrofic. BIA showed significant differences between men and women. The differences between the values of GEB, obtained by BIA and CI, were statistically significant only for women (p < 0.05) with an underestimation of the GEB results obtained by BIA in relation to those obtained by CI. Significant difference was found between the predictive equations and CI for both sexes, also demonstrating an underestimation of the equations in relation to CI. It was observed an overestimation of GET with the predictive equations of FAO/WHO/UNU/85 and 2001 in relation to EER and Fleisch for both sexes. Conclusion: The estimation of GEB can be carried out by both BIA and CI, although BIA must be used with criteria since it underestimates in a significant way for women. In relation to the predictive equations, overestimation can develop positive energy balance in populations with risks for overweight and obesity. To confirm circulation of Anajatuba virus in Maranhao, Brazil, we conducted a serologic survey (immunoglobulin G ELISA) and phylogenetic studies (nucleocapsid gene sequences) of hantaviruses from wild rodents and persons with hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. This virus is transmitted by Oligoryzomys fornesi rodents and is responsible for hantavirus pulmonary syndrome in this region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Yellow fever virus (YFV) was isolated from Haemagogus leucocelaenus mosquitoes during an epizootic in 2001 in the Rio Grande do Sul State in southern Brazil. In October 2008, a yellow fever outbreak was reported there, with nonhuman primate deaths and human cases. This latter outbreak led to intensification of surveillance measures for early detection of YFV and support for vaccination programs. We report entomologic surveillance in 2 municipalities that recorded nonhuman primate deaths. Mosquitoes were collected at ground level, identified, and processed for virus isolation and molecular analyses. Eight YFV strains were isolated (7 from pools of Hg. leucocelaenus mosquitoes and another from Aedes serratus mosquitoes); 6 were sequenced, and they grouped in the YFV South American genotype I. The results confirmed the role of Hg. leucocelaenus mosquitoes as the main YFV vector in southern Brazil and suggest that Ae. serratus mosquitoes may have a potential role as a secondary vector. Objectives: This study was undertaken to estimate the vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) success rate, compare rates of infections in women attempting VBAC and those undergoing planned repeat cesarean, and compare the cost of these two plans of care for obese women.Study Design: We performed a historical cohort analysis of singleton deliveries at >/=36 weeks' gestation in women with a body mass index 40 or greater and one prior cesarean delivery. Outcomes included rates of VBAC success and puerperal infections and mean cost of care.Results: The cohort consisted of 122 mother-infant pairs, 61 each in the VBAC and cesarean groups. In the VBAC group, 57% (95% CI 45-70) of women were delivered vaginally. The VBAC group had higher rates of chorioamnionitis (13.1% vs 1.6%, P=.02), endometritis (6.6% vs 0%, P=.06), and composite puerperal infection (24.6% vs 8.2%, P=.01). Mean cost of care was similar for mothers ($4439 vs $4427, P=.95), infants ($1241 vs $1422, P=.49), and mother-infant pairs ($5680 vs $5851, P=.64).Conclusion: Compared with planned cesarean delivery, VBAC trials in obese women are three times as likely to be complicated by infection and do not result in reduced costs. Using Illumina NextSeq sequencing and bioinformatics, we identified and characterized thirty-three viral sequences of unsegmented and multipartite viral families in Aedes spp., Culex sp. and Anopheles darlingi female mosquito pools from Porto São Luiz and Pirizal, Alto Pantanal. Seventeen sequences belong to unsegmented viral families, twelve represent putative novel insect-specific viruses (ISVs) within families Chuviridae (3/33; partial genomes) and coding-complete sequences of Xinmoviridae (1/33), Rhabdoviridae (2/33) and Metaviridae (6/33); and five coding-complete sequences of already-known ISVs. Notably, two putative novel rhabdoviruses, Corixo rhabdovirus 1 and 2, were phylogenetically related to Coxipo dielmovirus, but separated from other Alpharhabdovirinae genera, sharing Anopheles spp. as host. Regarding multipartite families, sixteen segments of different putative novel viruses were identified (13 coding-complete segments) within Durnavirales (4/33), Elliovirales (1/33), Hareavirales (3/33) and Reovirales (8/33) orders. Salvia hispanica L. (Chia), a member of the Lamiaceae, is an economically important crop in Mesoamerica, with health benefits associated with its seed fatty acid composition. Chia varieties are distinguished based on seed color including mixed white and black (Chia pinta) and black (Chia negra). To facilitate research on Chia and expand on comparative analyses within the Lamiaceae, we generated a chromosome-scale assembly of a Chia pinta accession and performed comparative genome analyses with a previously published Chia negra genome assembly. The Chia pinta and Chia negra genome sequences were highly similar as shown by a limited number of single nucleotide polymorphisms and extensive shared orthologous gene membership. However, there is an enrichment of terpene synthases in the Chia pinta genome relative to the Chia negra genome. We sequenced and analyzed the genomes of 20 Chia accessions with differing seed color and geographic origin revealing population structure within S. hispanica and interspecific introgressions of Salvia species. As the genus Salvia is polyphyletic, its evolutionary history remains unclear. Using large-scale synteny analysis within the Lamiaceae and orthologous group membership, we resolved the phylogeny of Salvia species. Advances in diagnostic techniques coupled with ongoing environmental changes have resulted in intensified surveillance and monitoring of arbovirus circulation in the Amazon. This increased effort has resulted in increased detection of insect-specific viruses among hematophagous arthropods collected in the field. This study aimed to document the first isolation of Agua Salud alphavirus in mosquitoes collected within the Brazilian Amazon. Arthropods belonging to the family Culicidae were collected within a forest fragment located in the Environmental Protection Area of the metropolitan region of Belem. Subsequently, these specimens were meticulously identified to the species level. Afterward, the collected batches were macerated, and the resulting supernatant was then inoculated into C6/36 and Vero cell cultures to facilitate viral isolation. The presence of arboviruses within the inoculated cell cultures was determined through indirect immunofluorescence analysis. Furthermore, positive supernatant samples underwent nucleotide sequencing to precisely identify the viral strains present. Notably, a batch containing Culex ( Melanoconion ) mosquitoes was identified to be positive for the genus Alphavirus via indirect immunofluorescence. This study is the first report on insect-specific alphavirus isolation in Brazil and the first-ever description of Agua Salud alphavirus isolation within Amazon Forest remnants.

Porphyrins were identified some years ago as a promising, easily accessible, and tunable class of organic photoredox catalysts, but a systematic study on the effect of the electronic nature and of the position of the substituents on both the ground-state and the excited-state redox potentials of these compounds is still lacking. We prepared a set of known functionalized porphyrin derivatives containing different substituents either in one of the meso positions or at a β-pyrrole carbon, and we determined their ground- and (singlet) excited-state redox potentials. We found that while the estimated singlet excited-state energies are essentially unaffected by the introduction of substituents, the redox potentials (both in the ground- and in the singlet excited-state) depend on the electron-withdrawing or electron-donating nature of the substituents. Thus, the presence of groups with electron-withdrawing resonance effects results in an enhancement of the reduction facility of the photocatalyst, both in the ground and in the excited state. We next prepared a second set of four previously unknown meso-substituted porphyrins, having a benzoyl group at different positions. The reduction facility of the porphyrin increases with the proximity of the substituent to the porphine core, reaching a maximum when the benzoyl substituent is introduced at a meso position.

In this contribution, we applied a multi-stage machine learning (ML) framework to map daily values of nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) and particulate matter (PM 10 and PM 2.5 ) at a 1 km 2 resolution over Great Britain for the period 2003-2021. The process combined ground monitoring observations, satellite-derived products, climate reanalyses and chemical transport model datasets, and traffic and land-use data. Each feature was harmonized to 1 km resolution and extracted at monitoring sites. Models used single and ensemble-based algorithms featuring random forests (RF), extreme gradient boosting (XGB), light gradient boosting machine (LGBM), as well as lasso and ridge regression. The various stages focused on augmenting PM 2.5 using co-occurring PM 10 values, gap-filling aerosol optical depth and columnar NO 2 data obtained from satellite instruments, and finally the training of an ensemble model and the prediction of daily values across the whole geographical domain (2003-2021). Results show a good ensemble model performance, calculated through a ten-fold monitor-based cross-validation procedure, with an average R 2 of 0.690 (range 0.611-0.792) for NO 2 , 0.704 (0.609-0.786) for PM 10 , and 0.802 (0.746-0.888) for PM 2.5 . Reconstructed pollution levels decreased markedly within the study period, with a stronger reduction in the latter eight years. The pollutants exhibited different spatial patterns, while NO 2 rose in close proximity to high-traffic areas, PM demonstrated variation at a larger scale. Introduction: Ureteral stricture is often a consequence of urolithiasis or previous endourological procedures (1-3). Precisely delineating the stricture zone intraoperatively is crucial to minimize ureter shortening and target only the affected tissue (4, 5). Flexible ureteroscopy offers a significant advantage in this regard., Objective: This video aims to demonstrate the step-by-step technique of flexible ureteroscopic guided laparoscopic ureteroplasty for treating ureteral stricture caused by urolithiasis and prior endourological interventions., Patient and Methods: We present a case of a 36-year-old male with a history of urolithiasis and unsuccessful endourological treatments, including endoureterotomy and balloon dilation, diagnosed with re-stenosis of the proximal ureter of 1 cm through ureteroscopy and pyelography. He underwent a successful laparoscopic ureteroplasty. While the lead surgeon performed the laparoscopy, an assistant conducted the flexible ureteroscopy. Intraoperatively, using transillumination facilitated by the flexible ureteroscope, we can precisely identify the narrowed area, allowing for resection of only the damaged segment. Subsequently, we perform the end-to-end ureteroplasty, confirming its patency through the seamless passage of the ureteroscope. Upon completion, we employ a fat patch to safeguard the anastomosis., Results: The patient was discharged on the third postoperative day. Double J stent was removed six weeks after surgery. Symptoms resolved. Renal function improved: eGFR 49 to 67 ml/min. Furthermore, improvement was observed in the DTPA scan, and a decrease in hydronephrosis was noted on the follow-up tomography., Conclusion: Flexible ureteroscopy effectively identifies the stricture zone in laparoscopic ureteroplasty, enhancing surgical precision and outcomes. In this study, we provide a genomic description of the first isolation of the Umattila virus (UMAV) in Brazil. The virus was obtained from the blood of a bird ( Turdus fumigatus ) and isolated in a C6/36 cell culture. The viral genome contains ten segments, and its organization is characteristic of viruses of the genus Orbivirus (family Sedoreoviridae ). The coding region of each segment was sequenced, demonstrating the nucleotide identity with UMAV. The phylogenetic inference results were in line with these findings and demonstrated the formation of two distinct monophyletic clades containing strains isolated around the world, where our isolate, belonging to the same clade as the prototype strain, was allocated to a different subclade, highlighting the genetic divergence between them. This work reports the first isolation of UMAV in Brazil, and due to the scarcity of information on this viral agent in the scientific literature, it is essential to carry out further studies to better understand its epidemiology, dispersion, and, in particular, its interactions with vertebrate hosts, vectors, and the environment.

Objective: To evaluate the correlation between blood alcohol levels and the severity of injuries assessed by the Injury Severity Score (ISS) in patients who were victims of traffic accidents admitted to the Hospital das Clínicas of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of São Paulo (HCFMUSP)., Methods: Cross-sectional study carried out between July 2018 and June 2019, at the Central Emergency Room of the Hospital das Clínicas of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of São Paulo (PSC-HCFMUSP). A total of 172 hospitalized patients victims of traffic accidents were included in this study. Blood samples were analyzed by the FMUSP Toxicology Laboratory., Results: 36 patients (20.9%) had positive BAC (≥ 0.2 g/L) with a mean of 1.21 g/L. Overall, patients had a mean age of 37.2 years old, and 136 (79.1%) were men. The ISS of the total casuistry was 15.6; regarding the external cause, the motorcycle was ranked first with 100 cases (58.1%), and drivers were the majority with 57.4% of the sample., Conclusion: There was no correlation between the severity of the injuries and the blood alcohol levels of traffic accident victims admitted to a reference hospital. Acromioclavicular joint (ACJ) dislocations are a common cause of pain in patients of any age. Athletes who participate in contact sports, such as hockey, football, rugby, and soccer, are particularly susceptible to such injuries. The ACJ has an important role in the function of the upper limb, and its complexity of movement makes it susceptible to acute injuries and chronic dysfunction with debilitating effects that must be treated appropriately and promptly to preserve function. Recently, ACJ has received increasing attention due to the development of new surgical techniques for the restoration of normal function and stability. There is some agreement about the treatment of ACJ dislocations, but controversy remains about the treatment of Rockwood grade III dislocations, and a new approach to these injuries is suggested by ISAKOS. This study estimated the contribution of the midfoot joint complex (MJC) kinematics to the pelvis anterior-posterior positions during the stance phase of walking and investigated whether the MJC is functionally coordinated with the lower limb joints to maintain similar pelvic positions across steps. Hip, knee, ankle, and MJC sagittal angles were measured in 11 nondisabled participants during walking. The joints' contributions to pelvic positions were computed through equations derived from a link-segment model. Functional coordination across steps was identified when the MJC contribution to pelvic position varied and the summed contributions of other joints varied in the opposite direction (strong negative covariations [r ≤ -.7] in stance phase instants). We observed that the MJC plantarflexion (arch raising) during the midstance and late stance leads the pelvis backward, avoiding excessive forward displacement. The MJC was the second joint that contributed most to the pelvis positions (around 18% of all joints' contributions), after the ankle joint. The MJC and ankle were the joints that were most frequently coordinated with the other joints (≅70% of the stance phase duration). The findings suggest that the MJC is part of the kinematic chain that determines pelvis positions during walking and is functionally coordinated with the lower limb joints.

Objective: The objectives of this study were to determine the richness, abundance, and diversity of bacteria in stray dogs ( Canis lupus familiaris ) infested by ticks in Comarca Lagunera, northern Mexico, and to establish their pathogenic and or/zoonotic potential., Materials and Methods: Blood samples from 12 dogs were collected, and their deoxyribonucleic acid was extracted. The V3-V4 region of the 16S ribosomal ribunocleic acid gene was amplified by polymerase chain reaction. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) was performed on a MiSeq Illumina platform, and the data were analyzed using quantitative insights into microbial ecology., Results: The operational taxonomic units resulted in 23 phyla, 54 classes, 89 orders, 189 families, 586 genera, and 620 bacterial species; among them, 64 species and/or bacterial genera with pathogenic or zoonotic potential were identified, some of which have been reported in the literature as relevant to public health ( Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Brucella spp ., Clostridium spp ., Corynebacterium affermentants, Cutibacterium spp ., Dietzia spp ., Ehrlichia canis, Fusobacterium necrophorum, Leptotrichia spp ., Mycobacterium spp ., Paracoccus spp ., and Roseomonas gilardii )., Conclusion: This research offers relevant information on the prevalence of tick-borne diseases as well as other potential zoonotic diseases in the blood of stray dogs parasitized by ticks in northern Mexico. Bats play an essential role in maintaining ecosystems. Their unique characteristics increase the likelihood of interactions with various species, making them a potential source for the emergence and spread of infectious diseases. Hantaviruses are continuously expanding their range of hosts. This study presents the identification of a partial genome associated with Hantavirus in samples collected from neotropical bats. We conducted a metagenomic study using samples from Carollia perspicillata in Maranhão, Brazil. Tissue fragments were used for RNA extraction and subsequent sequencing. The resulting data was subjected to bioinformatic analysis. A sequence showing an identity of 72.86% with the L gene in the reference genome was obtained. The phylogenetic analysis revealed the study sequence, denoted as Buritiense, clustering within the Mobatvirus clade. The intragroup analysis showed a broader dispersion and were markedly asymmetric. This observation suggests the possibility that Buritiense could potentially represent a new species within the bat-borne hantaviruses, but further analyses are needed to provide additional insights if bats plays a role as reservoirs and the potential for transmission to human populations., (© 2024. A new perspective on rotator cuff anatomy has allowed a better understanding of the patterns of the different rotator cuff tears. It is essential for radiologists to be aware of these different patterns of tears and to understand how they might influence treatment and surgical approach. Interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) plays a dual role in cancer; it is both a pro- and an antitumorigenic cytokine, depending on the type of cancer. The deregulation of the IFN-γ canonic pathway is associated with several disorders, including vulnerability to viral infections, inflammation, and cancer progression. In particular, the interplay between lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) and viral infections appears to exist in association with the deregulation of IFN-γ signaling. In this mini-review, we investigated the status of the IFN-γ signaling pathway and the expression level of its components in LUAD. Interestingly, a reduction in IFNGR1 expression seems to be associated with LUAD progression, affecting defenses against viruses such as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. The Saint Louis encephalitis virus (SLEV) is an encephalitogenic arbovirus ( Flaviviridae family) that has a wide geographical distribution in the western hemisphere, especially in the Americas. The negevirus Brejeira (BREV) was isolated for the first time in Brazil in 2005. This study aimed to verify the existence of a possible interfering effect of BREV on the course of SLEV infection and vice versa. We used clone C6/36 cells. Three combinations of MOIs were used (SLEV 0.1 × BREV 1; SLEV 1 × BREV 0.1; SLEV 1 × BREV 1) in the kinetics of up to 7 days and then the techniques of indirect immunofluorescence (IFA), a plaque assay on Vero cells, and RT-PCR were performed. Our results showed that the cytopathic effect (CPE) caused by BREV was more pronounced than the CPE caused by SLEV. Results of IFA, the plaque assay, and RT-PCR showed the suppression of SLEV replication in the co-infection condition in all the MOI combinations used. The SLEV suppression was dose-dependent. Therefore, the ISV Brejeira can suppress SLEV replication in Aedes albopictus cells, but SLEV does not negatively interfere with BREV replication.

Background: Glioblastoma is a brain malignant tumor grade IV, highly invasive. Alterations in several signaling pathways are involved in glioblastoma development. In this work, we evaluated the IFN-γ canonical signaling pathway in glioblastoma cells and its effect on cell viability and migration., Methods: The levels of STAT1/pSTAT1, IRF1, and PD-L1 in LN-18 glioblastoma cells were analyzed using western blotting. Cell viability was evaluated by calcein-AM/propidium iodide assays, and a wound healing assay was used to study the migration of glioblastoma cells treated with IFN-γ. Our aim was to determine the expression of IFN-γ signaling elements in cell lines and tissue from glioblastoma samples and examine the relationship between these elements and the survival of glioblastoma patients. The following platforms were utilized for analysis: the CCLE (Cancer Cell Line Encyclopedia), UALCAN (University of Alabama at Birmingham Cancer data analysis Portal), GEPIA (Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis), and GENT2 (Gene Expression patterns across Normal and Tumor tissues)., Results: Our results evidenced that IFN-γ signaling increases non-phosphorylated and phosphorylated STAT1 levels and promotes the upregulation of IRF1 and PD-L1 in glioblastoma cells. The activation of IFN-γ signaling increased cell migration without affecting the viability of glioblastoma cells. CienciaPR, a nonprofit that brings together the largest network of Puerto Rican scientists and one of the largest networks of Hispanic/Latine scientists in the world, has collaborated with El Nuevo Día (END), Puerto Rico's newspaper of record, to increase culturally relevant stories in their science section. This Practice Insight quantifies and compares the presence of culturally relevant elements (e.g., referring to Puerto Rico, local landmarks, historic figures, slang) and other content information (e.g., topics, location, focus, protagonist) in articles authored by CienciaPR members versus articles by END, news agencies, and other organizations. Results demonstrate that CienciaPR-authored articles published in END featured culturally relevant elements more often (e.g., mentioned Puerto Rico, used Puerto Rican slang, stories located in Puerto Rico) than those by other sources.

Baccharis anomala DC. (BA) is a plant species found in the tropical regions of South America and is widely used for its hepatoprotective effects, as well as for the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases. Studies have recently reported its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential. BA extract can reverse the activated phenotype of hepatic stellate cells (HSC), which plays a central role in extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition in the development of liver fibrosis. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of the treatment with BA extract on liver fibrosis in a CCl 4 -induced liver fibrosis model in BALB/c mice. Methanolic extract was obtained from BA leaves, a gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) to detect the compounds present was performed, and then administered by intraperitoneal injection in Balb/C mice at a concentration of 50 and 100 mg/kg together with the administration of CCl 4 for inducing liver fibrosis. After 10 weeks, blood analysis, histopathology, oxidative stress, as well as protein and gene expression in the hepatic tissue were performed. Treatment with BA extract was able to reduce profibrotic markers by reducing the expression of α-SMA and Col-1 proteins, as well as reducing the formation of free radicals and lipid peroxidation. (BA extract showed anti-inflammatory effects in the liver by suppressing NF-kB activation and reducing gene expression of signaling targets (IL-6 and iNOS). In pulmonary fibrosis, the proliferation of fibroblasts and their differentiation into myofibroblasts is often caused by tissue damage, such as oxidative damage caused by reactive oxygen species, which leads to progressive rupture and thus destruction of the alveolar architecture, resulting in cell proliferation and tissue remodeling. Bezafibrate (BZF) is an important member of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPARs) family agonists, used in clinical practice as antihyperlipidemic. However, the antifibrotic effects of BZF are still poorly studied. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of BZF on pulmonary oxidative damage in lung fibroblast cells. MRC-5 cells were treated with hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) to induce oxidative stress activation and BZF treatment was administered at the same moment as H 2 O 2 induction. The outcomes evaluated were cell proliferation and cell viability; oxidative stress markers such as reactive oxygen species (ROS), catalase (CAT) levels and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS); col-1 and α-SMA mRNA expression and cellular elasticity through Young's modulus analysis evaluated by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The H 2 O 2 -induced oxidative damage decreased the cell viability and increased ROS levels and decreased CAT activity in MRC-5 cells. The expression of α-SMA and the cell stiffness increased in response to H 2 O 2 treatment. Treatment with BZF decreased the MRC-5 cell proliferation, ROS levels, reestablished CAT levels, decreased the mRNA expression of type I collagen protein (col-1) and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA), and cellular elasticity even with H 2 O 2 induction. Our results suggest that BZF has a potential protective effect on H2O2-induced oxidative stress. This review evaluated the risks and survival benefits of pancreatoduodenectomy associated with venous resection compared with palliative surgery. A systematic review with meta-analysis was performed. Higher overall survival was observed in the pancreatic resection group (HR = 4.000; 95% CI 2.800 to 5.200). However, the palliative group had fewer complications (RD = -0.170; 95% CI -0.260 to -0.070). There was no significant difference in the mortality rates (RD = 0.000; 95% CI -0.030 to 0.030). In centres with experience in pancreatic surgery, resection may be considered for locally advanced cancer and major venous invasion. Pancreaticoduodenectomy with vascular resection may improve survival for periampullary tumours compared with palliation therapy. However, pancreaticoduodenectomy with major venous resection has potentially higher morbidity than palliation therapy. The TGF-β and Hippo pathways are critical for liver size control, regeneration, and cancer progression. The transcriptional cofactor TAZ, also named WWTR1, is a downstream effector of Hippo pathway and plays a key role in the maintenance of liver physiological functions. However, the up-regulation of TAZ expression has been associated with liver cancer progression. Recent evidence shows crosstalk of TGF-β and Hippo pathways, since TGF-β modulates TAZ expression through different mechanisms in a cellular context-dependent manner but supposedly independent of SMADs. Here, we evaluate the molecular interplay between TGF-β pathway and TAZ expression and observe that TGF-β induces TAZ expression through SMAD canonical pathway in liver cancer HepG2 cells. Epiperipatus ohausi (Bouvier, 1900) is the first species known from Rio de Janeiro, and more than 120 years later a new species is described in the state of Rio de Janeiro (RJ). In this study, we describe the second species in the state of Rio de Janeiro, which we are naming in honor of the indigenous population called puri who resided in southeastern coastal Brazil. The species can be diagnosed mainly by large dorsal primary papillae close to the insertion of the legs drawing a light band from the anterior to the posterior region of the body, and large dorsal primary papillae alternating on the dorsal plicae. Moreover, they are recognized in vivo by the color of the diamond-shaped marks brownish orange on the dorsal portion of the body. Epiperipatus puri sp. nov. morphologically seems to be related to Epiperipatus acacioi (Marcus & Marcus, 1995) by the shape of the primary papillae apical piece and to E. ohausi by the resemblance of dorsal papillae. Background: Sodium (Na) balance is unexplored in dialyzed children. We assessed a simplified sodium balance (sNaB) and its correlates in pediatric patients receiving maintenance dialysis., Methods: Patients < 18 years old on hemodialysis (HD) or peritoneal dialysis (PD) in six European Pediatric Dialysis Working Group centers were recruited. sNaB was calculated from enteral Na, obtained by a 3-day diet diary, Na intake from medications, and 24-h urinary Na (uNa). Primary outcomes were systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure standard deviation scores (SBP and DBP SDS), obtained by 24-h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring or office BP according to age, and interdialytic weight gain (IDWG)., Results: Forty-one patients (31 HD), with a median age of 13.3 (IQR 5.2) years, were enrolled. Twelve patients (29.3%) received Na-containing drugs, accounting for 0.6 (0.7) mEq/kg/day. Median total Na intake was 1.5 (1.1) mEq/kg/day, corresponding to 60.6% of the maximum recommended daily intake for healthy children. Median uNa and sNaB were 0.6 (1.8) mEq/kg/day and 0.9 (1.7) mEq/kg/day, respectively. The strongest independent predictor of sNaB in the cohort was urine output. In patients receiving HD, sNaB correlated with IDWG, pre-HD DBP, and first-hour refill index, a volume index based on blood volume monitoring. sNaB was the strongest predictor of IDWG in multiple regression analysis (β = 0.63; p = 0.005). Neither SBP SDS nor DBP SDS correlated with sNaB., Conclusions: Na intake is higher than uNa in children on dialysis, and medications may be an important source of Na. sNaB is best predicted by urine output in the population, and it is a significant independent predictor of IDWG in children on HD. Viruses of the Lyssavirus genus are classified into several genotypes (GT1 to GT7), of which only GT1 (classic rabies virus-RABV) has a cosmopolitan distribution and circulates in Brazil. GT1 is subdivided into several antigenic variants (AgV) maintained in independent cycles with a narrow host range and distinct geographic distributions, namely, AgV1 and AgV2 found in dogs, AgV3 in the vampire bats Desmodus rotundus , and AgV4 and AgV6 in bats non-hematophagous Tadarida brasiliensis and Lasiurus cinereus , a common variant of marmoset ( Callithrix jacchus ), and crab-eating fox ( Cerdocyon thous ). In this study, we performed phylogenetic analysis to identify at the antigenic variant level; six RABV genomes derived from the Rabies Surveillance in the north and northeast regions of Brazil. The analysis resulted in the formation of 11 monophyletic clusters, each corresponding to a particular variant, with high bootstrap support values. The samples were positioned inside the AgV3, AgV6, and Callithrix variant clades. This is the first report of the AgV6 variant found in northern Brazil, which provides valuable information for rabies surveillance in the country. The possibility of viral spillover has been much debated, as it deals with the risk of shifting transmission from a primary to a secondary host. Background: Pathogenic variants of PLCG2 cause 2 related forms of autosomal dominant immune dysregulation, PLCγ2-associated antibody deficiency and immune dysregulation (PLAID) and autoinflammatory PLAID (APLAID). Since describing these conditions, many PLCG2 variants of uncertain significance (VUS) have been identified by clinical sequencing of patients with diverse features of immune dysregulation., Objective: To functionally classify PLCG2 variants and explore known and novel genotype-function-phenotype relationships., Methods: Clinical data from patients with PLCG2 variants were obtained via standardized questionnaire. PLCG2 variants were generated by mutagenesis of eGFP-PLCG2 plasmid, which was overexpressed in Plcg2-deficient DT-40 B-cells. BCR-induced calcium flux and ERK phosphorylation were assayed by flow cytometry. In some cases, stimulation-induced calcium flux was also measured in primary patient cells., Results: Three-fourths of PLCG2 variants produced functional alteration of B-cell activation, in vitro. Thirteen variants led to gain-of-function (GOF), however most functional variants defined a new class of PLCG2 mutation, monoallelic loss-of-function (LOF). Susceptibilty to infection and autoinflammation were common with both GOF and LOF variants, while a new phenotypic cluster consisting of humoral immune deficiency, autoinflammation, susceptibility to herpesviral infection and natural killer (NK) cell dysfunction were observed in association with multiple heterozygous LOF variants detected in both familial and sporadic cases. In some cases, PLCG2 variants produced greater effects in NK cells than B-cells., Conclusion: This work expands the genotypic and phenotypic associations with functional variation in PLCG2, including a novel form of immune dysregulation in carriers of heterozygous loss of PLCG2 function. The Neotropical sharpshooter Sofiella gen. nov. is described and illustrated from the Araucaria moist forest in Southern and Southeastern Brazil (States of Paraná, Rio Grande do Sul and São Paulo) based on two new species, S. takiyae sp. nov. (type-species) and S. nicolasi sp. nov. The new genus shares features with Exogonia but can be differentiated by the pronotal width slightly narrower than the transocular width of the head; pygofer without setose processes; aedeagus bearing a pair of apical processes; female sternite VII with posterior margin convex; and second valvula with few long, not prominent teeth and a well developed preapical prominence.
