Purpose: To determine whether nurses' workaholic tendencies and demographic variables predict their professional quality of life. Design: A cross‐sectional design was utilized among 427 Saudi nurses which conveniently selected in four tertiary public hospitals in Saudi Arabia. Findings: Nurses' have higher workaholic tendencies level and moderate professional quality of life levels. Working more than 40 h per week correlates with one's risk of workaholism. Certain professional quality of life subscales is associated with gender, marital status, hospital experience, and work addiction tendencies. Practice Implications: The present study contributes to the development of new clinical practices by enlightening readers of the implications of workaholism for nurses' professional quality of life, so that this can be addressed and managed properly. Compassion and empathy form the bedrock of nursing, essential for sincere and integral healthcare practice. This study delves into the multifaceted dimensions of caring in nursing, exploring its physical and emotional aspects. Nursing instructors are pivotal in infusing active learning strategies that cultivate caring behaviors among students, preparing them for healthcare's technical and compassionate aspects. Positive interactions between instructors and students impact students' academic performance and personal development by creating a supportive and nurturing learning environment, fostering openness to constructive feedback, building students' self-esteem and confidence, and helping them manage academic stresses and anxieties. The study explored Kazakh nursing students' experiences regarding their instructors' caring behavior. Exploratory qualitative research using a thematic approach. A university situated in Astana, Kazakhstan. Eleven (11) Kazakh nursing students. This study utilized purposive sampling to collect data from Kazakh nursing students from January to March 2024. The researcher adhered to ethical guidelines and ensured the rigor and trustworthiness of the study. The data were analyzed using the thematic approach. One hundred fifty-nine initial codes were identified, and after the codes were grouped and categorized, ten subthemes and four major themes were developed. The four major themes are Caring Creates a Supportive and Inclusive Environment for Learning, Caring Qualities of an Instructor, Caring is Cultural in Nature, and Negative Consequences of an Instructor's Over-Caring. According to nursing students' experience, instructors' caring behavior is crucial in maintaining the student-teacher relationship and motivating and collaborating. This study explored the perspectives of nursing, medical and public health students on environmental sustainability in healthcare. The healthcare sector has increasingly recognized the importance of adopting environmental sustainability over the past few years. This growing awareness emphasizes the need to thoroughly assess the connection between health care and environmental responsibility. Qualitative descriptive-exploratory design. This study explored the views on environmental sustainability in health care of 29 nursing, medical and public health students at three universities in Kazakhstan through focus group discussions. Thematic analysis was used in the data analysis. Data collection was carried out from June to August 2023. Using semantic thematic analysis, 209 initial codes were extracted, and then similar codes and meanings were grouped, leading to 21 categories until the development of the five significant themes. The five main themes are 'the impact of the environment on health', 'environmental sustainability practices in healthcare care', 'the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in environmental sustainability in healthcare', 'intrinsic motivation to engage in environmental sustainability practices in healthcare' and 'challenges and barriers to practicing environmental sustainability in healthcare'. The study findings suggest the critical aspect of addressing environmental sustainability through interprofessional collaboration and working on intrinsic motivation among health professionals. Furthermore, our study contributes in several ways to our understanding of environmental sustainability in healthcare. Objective: It is known that job satisfaction and quality of life influence nurses' intention to resign from their jobs. However, health-care systems should examine all the possible factors that contribute to nurse turnover to retain them for the long term. To this purpose, this study further explores the aspects that affect the intention of nurses who work in Saudi Arabia to leave their current jobs. Methods: A sample of 318 staff nurses working in two public hospitals in Saudi Arabia was surveyed in this cross-sectional study. A questionnaire was used to assess job satisfaction, stress, quality of life, and intention of recruited nurses to leave their current jobs. Data were collected between April and May 2018. Results: Quality of life dimensions, such as physical and psychological health, predict nurses' intention to resign from their current workplaces. We found that being single or of Filipino or Indian origin, working in the medical and surgical department, or having a low monthly gross salary is correlated with a high intention to leave. Conclusion: The results present a unique theoretical underpinning that expands on the previous knowledge and literature on the factors that affect nurses' intent to leave their organizations. The findings of this study can be used as a guide to establish human resource policies toward satisfying nurses' needs and improving job satisfaction and quality of life to promote retention. The risk of acquiring and spreading infection must be minimized in nursing students because they are exposed to healthcare-associated infections during clinical training. To achieve this goal, students should be knowledgeable and competent in infection control practice before proceeding to their training hospitals. This study assessed the nursing students' perception of the infection prevention climate in training hospitals in Saudi Arabia. It also examined the predictors of the students' perceptions. A quantitative, cross-sectional design was used. This investigation was part of a large study conducted in six Saudi universities. A total of 829 Saudi nursing students were included in this study. Data were collected using the Leading Culture of Quality in Infection Prevention scale and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Ethical approval was obtained from the King Saud University, and permission was given by the administration of each participating university. The overall perception of nursing students indicated a modest infection prevention climate. Prioritization of quality and improvement orientation was rated as the highest dimensions, whereas psychological safety and supportive environment were the lowest. The nursing students in University F had the poorest perceptions among the six universities. The predictors of nursing student perception of their training hospitals' infection prevention climates were the university where they studied, their age, and participation in infection prevention seminars. This article describes nursing students' perception of the infection prevention climate of their training hospitals in Saudi Arabia. Results may provide a unique theoretical underpinning on the perception and factors that effect an infection prevention climate. Thereby, previous knowledge and literature may be expanded. To assess Kazakh pediatric nurses' knowledge and confidence in peripheral intravenous catheter (PIVC) management and examine the personal and professional factors that influenced them. Despite the significance of having high levels of PIVC insertion and care knowledge and confidence among pediatric nurses, the literature portrays inadequacies in the knowledge of these nurses in various parts of the globe. This study is cross-sectional and observational, following the STrengthening the Reporting of OBservational studies in Epidemiology checklist in reporting. A convenience sample of 200 pediatric nurses working in the University Medical Center in Kazakhstan were surveyed from November to December 2022 using a paper-based questionnaire to assess the PIVC management knowledge and confidence. The respondents had poor knowledge of patient assessment, PIVC insertion, maintenance, and removal. Participants reported high confidence in inserting and maintaining PIVCs among pediatric patients. Nurses' education, pediatric nursing experience, and training in PIVC management in the last 12 months were significant predictors of the nurses' knowledge. PIVC insertion and care knowledge directly influenced the nurses' confidence in these procedures. Despite the high confidence of the nurses, their actual knowledge of these skills needed to be higher. • Anti-inflammatory activity of 45 Ocotea spp. was demonstrated for the first time. • Untargeted metabolomics reveals alkaloids and novel compounds as anti-inflammatory markers. • Aporphine and benzylisoquinoline alkaloids markers were confidently annotated at level 2. Species within the Ocotea genus (Lauraceae), have demonstrated an interesting profile of bioactivities. Renowned for their diverse morphology and intricate specialized metabolite composition, Ocotea species have re-emerged as compelling candidates for bioprospecting in drug discovery research. However, it is a genus insufficiently studied, particularly regarding anti-inflammatory activity. To investigate the anti-inflammatory activity of Ocotea spp. extracts and determine the major markers in this genus. Extracts of 60 different Ocotea spp. were analysed by an ex vivo anti-inflammatory assay in human whole blood. The experiment estimates the prostaglandin E2 levels, which is one of the main mediators of the inflammatory cascade, responsible for the classical symptoms of fever, pain, and other common effects of the inflammatory process. Untargeted metabolomics analysis through liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry was performed, along with statistical analysis, to investigate which Ocotea metabolites are correlated with their anti-inflammatory activity. The anti-inflammatory screening indicated that 49 out of 60 Ocotea spp. extracts exhibited significant inhibition of PGE2 release compared to the vehicle (p < 0.05). Furthermore, 10 of these extracts showed statistical similarity to the reference drugs. The bioactive markers were accurately identified using multivariate statistics combined with a fold change (> 1.5) and adjusted false discovery rate analysis as unknown compounds and alkaloids, with a majority of aporphine and benzylisoquinolines. These alkaloids were annotated with an increased level of confidence since MSE spectra were compared with comprehensive databases. This study represents the first bioprospecting report revealing the anti-inflammatory potential of several Ocotea spp. The determination of their anti-inflammatory markers could contribute to drug discovery and the chemical knowledge of the Ocotea genus. Abstract Reported natural disasters are steadily increasing, yet there is limited previous research explicitly exploring the predictors of disaster resiliency among older people from typhoon-hit provinces. This study examined the relationships between life satisfaction, attitude, spirituality and locus of control towards resiliency among older adult Typhoon Haiyan survivors. A descriptive correlational design was conducted among these survivors in the Eastern Philippines. Standard multiple linear regression analysis was used in the study. The findings indicated that spirituality and attitude were significant predictors of the survivors' resiliency. The spirituality and positive attitudes of the older adults were associated with disaster resiliency among the typhoon survivors. Purpose: This study was conducted to compare perceptions of stress and quality of life (QoL) among nursing students from three countries (the Philippines, Greece, and Nigeria) and to examine the impact of stress on their QoL. Design and methods: A comparative, cross‐sectional research design was used in this study. Data were collected from 547 nursing students from three countries using the perceived stress scale (PSS) and the quality of life evaluation skill (QOLES). Findings: Students' perceptions of stress and QoL were different across the three countries. Furthermore, higher stress perceptions were identified from taking care of patients, the clinical environment, and faculty, peer, and staff encounters, which predicted a negative QoL. Practice implications: The findings emphasized the need for empirically tested and culturally tailored interventions to effectively reduce stress and enhance the QoL in nursing students. Background Nursing student life is stressful as a result of the work they exert to learn concepts ranging from basic to complicated issues and health concerns for maintaining overall human health. Hence, assessing the quality of life (QOL) of nursing students is important to determine if they have excellent well-being levels as they go through the learning process. Objectives This study measured and compared QOL of respondents by country of residence, and identified the QOL predictors of students. Design Descriptive, cross-sectional design. Settings A multi-country study conducted in Chile, Egypt, Greece, Hong Kong, India, Kenya, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the United States of America. Participants A convenience sample of 2012 Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students. Methods A self-administered questionnaire containing demographic characteristic items and the World Health Organization QOL-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF) was used to gather data from respondents. Results The highest overall QOL was recorded in the physical health domain, whereas the lowest was in the social health domain. The perceived highest and lowest QOL dimension varied between countries. Age, country of residence, and monthly family income showed statistically significant multivariate effect on the aspects of QOL. Conclusions Considering their stressful lives, the present study underscores the importance of ensuring the highest level of well-being among nursing students. The maintenance of high levels of well-being among nursing students should also be prioritized to maximize their learning and ensure their satisfaction in their student life. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This aim of this study was assess whether positive and negative spiritual/religious coping (SRC) strategies are associated with depressive symptoms (DS) of informal caregiver (IC) of hospitalized older adults. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 98 IC of hospitalized older adults in the medical clinic of a Brazilian School Hospital. The functionality, Positive and Negative SRC strategies and DS were evaluated. The IC had high average use of SRC, with Positive SRC being more used than Negative SRC. In the unadjusted regression model, Positive and Negative SRC were associated with DS. However, when adjusted for confounding factors, only Negative SRC remained associated with DS. The IC had used their religious and spiritual beliefs as a way to cope with the stress that comes from caring for hospitalized older adults. Although the positive strategy use of these beliefs was more common, only the negative strategies were associated with a higher DS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study assessed the psychometric properties of the "Learning Needs for Disaster Nursing Scale-Arabic version" (LNDNS-A) among baccalaureate nursing students in Saudi Arabia. A quantitative, methodological approach was performed to establish the psychometric properties of the LNDNS-A. The investigation was conducted in one university situated in the central region of Saudi Arabia. A sample of 204 student nurses was surveyed in this study with an average age of 21.30 (standard deviation = 2.35). The "Learning Needs for Disaster Nursing Scale" was culturally and linguistically adapted to LNDNS-A. Validity and reliability tests were performed to support the psychometric properties of the LNDNS-A. For validity, content validity was established and "principal components analysis" (PCA) with varimax rotation was used for construct validity of the tool. Cronbach's alpha was computed to establish the internal consistency reliability. The demographic characteristics were treated using descriptive statistics. The findings showed that the content validity of the LNDNS-A was acceptable. The PCA supported the three-factor scale: "Skills and knowledge in disaster relief," "Discipline introduction," and "Disaster management," with a cumulative explained variance of 63.7%. The entire scale computed Cronbach was 0.943, and 0.927, 0.806, and 0.987 for the three subscales, respectively. LNDNS-A is valid and reliable when used among Arabic-speaking baccalaureate nursing students. LNDNS-A can be used to accurately assess the learning needs of disaster nursing of Saudi student nurses and possibly other Arabic nursing students, expanding the scientific research on this area in the Arabic peninsula. • The Learning Needs for Disaster Nursing Scale was adapted to Arabic language (LNDNS-A). • The LNDNS-A is valid and reliable for Arabic-speaking nursing students. • The LNDNS-A can be used to assess the disaster nursing learning needs of Arabic-speaking nursing students. Background Faculty continue to observe students struggling as they adapt their study strategies to learn nursing core content. Objectives This study described the study habits of Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students prior to admission to the program. Design This study used a descriptive qualitative research design. Settings and Participants A purposive sample of 19 BSN students (juniors [ n = 10] and seniors [ n = 9]) from a 4-year public Midwestern university were included in this study. Methods Two focus group sessions, using a semi-structured interview guide, were conducted in the spring semester of 2013. Results The four themes which emerged from the analysis of data were: “I just got it,” “I had a lot of time then,” “I studied alone” mostly, and “…a little struggle with the sciences.” Conclusions The findings suggest the BSN students did not study much or employed poor study strategies during their years completing general education courses. Academic support is needed by students prior to admission to the nursing program so they can learn effective study skills and modify their study habits for easier adaptation to the rigors of nursing education. Background No study has been undertaken to understand how spirituality and spiritual care is perceived and implemented by Saudi nursing students undergoing training for their future professional roles as nurses. Objectives This study was conducted to investigate the perception of Baccalaureate nursing students toward spirituality and spiritual care. Design A descriptive, cross-sectional design was employed. Settings and Participants A convenience sample of 338 baccalaureate nursing students in two government-run universities in Saudi Arabia was included in this study. Methods A self-administered questionnaire, consisting of a demographic and spiritual care background information sheet and the Spiritual Care-Giving Scale Arabic version (SCGS-A), was used for data collection. A multivariate multiple regression analysis and multiple linear regression analyses were performed accordingly. Results The mean value on the SCGS-A was 3.84 ± 1.26. Spiritual perspective received the highest mean (4.14 ± 1.45), followed by attribute for spiritual care (3.96 ± 1.48), spiritual care attitude (3.81 ± 1.47), defining spiritual care (3.71 ± 1.51) and spiritual care values (3.57 ± 1.47). Gender, academic level and learning spiritual care from classroom or clinical discussions showed a statistically significant multivariate effect on the five factors of SCGS-A. Conclusions Efforts should be done to formally integrate holistic concept including all the facets of spirituality and spiritual care in the nursing curriculum. The current findings can be used to inform the development and testing of holistic nursing conceptual framework in nursing education in Saudi Arabia and other Arab Muslim countries. This study assessed the nurses' knowledge of, skills on and attitudes toward health education among nurses working at the University Medical Center Corporate Fund (UMC) in Kazakhstan. The personal and professional factors influencing the nurses' knowledge of, skills on and attitudes toward health education were also investigated. Health education is one of the nurses' fundamental responsibilities. Nurses' role in health education is critical in empowering patients and their families to live healthier lives, thus ensuring optimum health, well-being and quality of life. However, in Kazakhstan, where the nursing profession is still establishing its professional autonomy, data concerning the competence of Kazakh nurses in health education is unknown. A quantitative study, specifically the cross-sectional, descriptive and correlational designs. The survey was performed at UMC in Astana, Kazakhstan. Using a convenience sampling technique, 312 nurses participated in the survey from March to August 2022. The "Nurse Health Education Competence Instrument" was used to collect data. The personal and professional characteristics of the nurses were also collected. Standard multiple regression analysis examined the personal and professional variables influencing the nurses' health education competence. The respondents' average score in the "Cognitive domain," "Psychomotor domain," and "Affective-attitudinal domain" was 3.80 (SD = 0.66), 3.99 (SD = 0.58) and 4.04 (SD = 0.62), respectively. The nurses' category as a nurse, medical center, attendance to health education training/seminars in the last 12 months, provision of health education to a patient in the last week and perception of health education's significance in nursing practice were significant predictors of the nurses' health education competence contributing an approximately 24.4 %, 29.3 % and 27.1 % of the variance of the health education knowledge (R 2 = 0.273, Adjusted R 2 = 0.244), skills R 2 = 0.320, Adjusted R 2 = 0.293) and attitudes (R 2 = 0.299, Adjusted R 2 = 0.271). The nurses reported high levels of health education competence (knowledge, attitudes and skills). The personal and professional factors influencing the nurses' competence in health education are essential to consider when developing interventions and healthcare policies to ensure nurses' competent provision of health education to patients. Background With the continued emigration of Filipino nurses and increasing globalization, there is a need for globally competent nurses. Thus, the development of cultural competence among nursing students is critical in their preparation to assume their future responsibilities in the profession. Objectives This study investigated the predictors of cultural competence among nursing students in the Philippines. Design This is a descriptive, cross-section study. Participants and Setting This study included 332 Bachelor of Science in nursing students in three nursing schools situated in the northern Philippines. Methods The Cultural Capacity Scale was used to gather data from the respondents. The demographic characteristics and cultural background of the students were entered in a regression analysis to predict their cultural competence. Findings The respondents manifested appreciably good cultural competence with a mean score of 68.98 ± 11.73. The ability to understand the beliefs of various cultural groups received the highest mean of 3.65 ± 0.86, while the ability to identify the care needs of patients with diverse cultural backgrounds received the lowest (mean, 3.31 ± 0.74). Living in an environment with culturally diverse people, prior diversity training, being in the latter years of the nursing program, and with experience of caring for patients from diverse cultures and special population groups, were identified as predictors, accounting for 68.1% of the variance of cultural competence. Conclusions Nursing education should devise strategies to ensure future culturally competent Filipino nurses. The study tested the validity and reliability of the "Disaster Response Self-Efficacy Scale" Arabic version (DRSES-A) among Saudi nursing students. Disaster self-efficacy is one such factor of increasing interest. Little research has explored disaster response self-efficacy despite growing evidence on disaster response preparedness in Saudi Arabia. A systematic, standardized and valid instrument is needed to assess disaster self-efficacy in the Saudi context. The DRSES is one of the tools with excellent psychometric properties that can evaluate the nursing students' perceived self-efficacy in disaster preparation, mitigation and response. This investigation is a quantitative methodological design testing the validity and reliability of the DRSES-A. In this study, 290 Saudi nursing students were surveyed from May to June 2021 in the three government universities in Saudi Arabia using the convenience sampling technique. The Disaster Response Self-Efficacy Scale underwent a linguistic adaptation following a forward-backward translation method. Construct validity was established using the principal component analysis to extract the components of DRSES-A. The overall mean of the DRSES-A was 3.41 (SD = 0.75). The overall Cronbach alpha was 0.939. The subscales "Onsite rescue" and "Psychological nursing" had a similar alpha of 0.911, while "Role quality and adaptation" had a computed alpha of 0.878. The expert rated all item content validity index as 1 with an average score content validity index of 1. The principal component analysis supported a three-factor DRSES-A. The DRSES-A is a valid and reliable scale that can measure Arabic-speaking baccalaureate nursing students' self-reported disaster response self-efficacy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
