Abstract

Comprised of seven intergenerational dialogues, this article brings together emerging and established scholars to query into the future of queer literacy research. Addressing generational shifts in queer method(ologie)s, these dialogues advance epistemological, ontological, and ethical research quandaries related to queer and trans studies today. Holding implications for literacy research broadly, this article presents queer futurity as a research approach for addressing some of our field's most pressing concerns.

8. STEM Mentoring for Female Students of the Rural American West

Abstract

Female students face distinct challenges when pursuing an education in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Those challenges are compounded when female students grow up in the rural American west. Through the framework of Critical Feminist Theory (CFT), this study looks to identify barriers for female students within STEM education and examines the effectiveness of e-mentoring on deconstructing gender biased pathways and gender biased images of female rural STEM students. Participating students reflect on their mentoring experiences through individual interviews. Interpretive Grounded Theory (IGT) is utilized in understanding the data.

9. Reading 'This Bridge Called My Back' for Pedagogies of Coalition, Remediation, and a Razor's Edge

Abstract

In this article, I examine the engagement of pre-service teachers with US feminist of color theory. Centering coalition relations, re-mediation, and dialogic narrative, I argue that the field of women of color thought is pedagogical in thinking through the intersectional and multidimensional problems of teaching and schooling, particularly when working with under-resourced schools and displaced and dispossessed students and their families. A framework based on the intellectual labor of US women of color, where the pedagogies of coalition, re-mediation, and dialogic narratives create powerful epistemological interventions that support pre-service teachers as they think about the complex problems of schools in this era of the defunding and the dismantlement of public education. It is a US women of color pedagogy that engages teachers in developing alternative accounts of their relationship to the world, how these new accounts are unavoidably theoretical and provide a starting point for new thinking about pedagogy, power, and praxis.

15. Technology Integration within University/Public School Communities: A Panel Discussion.

Abstract

A large, private western university, committed to developing technology-proficient educators, brought professors and public school teachers together in three professional development seminars on integrating technology into the K-12 curriculum. This paper summarizes a panel discussion by four participants in the workshops: a district director of information systems; a state Internet specialist; a public school teacher involved with the state education network; and a university faculty member. Issues related to integrating technology into curriculum and instruction as they pertain to both preservice and inservice development are discussed. (MES)

Abstract

This essay examines a video poem curriculum for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) students of color at a continuation school in Los Angeles, California. In this close reading of a video poem that draws from a larger research project of a community-based learning curriculum, I have found that for LGBTQ students of color whose lives often intersect multiple oppressions, it is in the reflexive pedagogical work of "storying the self" (Goodson, 1998) where they develop a critical consciousness through an interrogation of their own bodies as they confront HIV, survival sex, and violence. The racially queered self/body, particularly in media work, becomes a rich representational tool used to facilitate reflection and praxical thinking about the multiple, often simultaneous experiences of Latino and African American LGBTQ students. It is in this pedagogical space where the urgency and necessity of a radical politic emerges from the analysis of intersection and intermeshment in student experiences, and where a "theory in the flesh" that is derived from youth bodies may literally save your own life. © 2013 by The Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto.

Abstract

Testimonio, as a genre of the dispossessed, the migrant, and the queer, is a response to larger discourses of nation-building and has the potential to undermine the larger narratives that often erase and make invisible the expendable and often disposable labor and experiences of immigrants, the working class, African Americans, and others. This essay explores the use of testimonio in urban classrooms in Los Angeles and its use as a mediating tool in critical thinking and community based learning projects. I argue that there is a pedagogy to testimonio that is intersubjective and accessible and that, under certain circumstances, re-centers and revitalizes curriculum in this era of standardization and accountability, a hearkening to social justice movements that begin in education. © 2012 Copyright Taylor and Francis Group, LLC.

19. LGBTQ street youth talk back: a meditation on resistance and witnessing

Abstract

In this ethnography of LGBTQ street youth, I argue that despite the regulation and containment of their bodies, queer street youth consistently create spaces of resistance that move them away from the tropes of infection, contamination, and deservedness that are inscripted onto the bodies of queer youth. Using the work of feminist philosopher Maria Lugones, this essay articulates a framework for resistance researchers - scholars who enact a "faithful witnessing" in solidarity with the communities they are describing, a movement away from the radical othering that often happens in social science research. It is in this positioning as a faithful witness that researchers can attend to the deconstruction of the discursive climates of deficit tropes that obscure the gestures and maneuvers of resistance. The tropes of contamination and irresponsibility intersect many of the experiences of LGBTQ street youth in ways that implicate not only LGBTQ street youth, but also other marginalized bodies. © 2011 Taylor & Francis.

Abstract

Finding the Balance: Equity and Competition Among High School Music Programs in Texas Cecil M. Crabtree-SpringUniversity of Arizona This comparative case study examines two school districts with similar student population sizes and schools in Texas. The two school districts are located on different sides of Texas: Texas/Mexico border and an East Texas suburban area. Looking through the lens of financial equity, race and racism, standardized testing, and neoliberalism, this study explains how these specific components affect music education in Texas/Mexico ISD (pseudonym name) for predominantly Hispanic students. This study triangulates qualitative research, interviews, and a comparative case study framework to inform the researcher of deficiencies among Texas/Mexico border school districts. Interview participants are current or former high school band directors within the respected areas, while the anonymous survey encompasses all high school band directors in Texas. The data demonstrated overwhelming concerns about the lack of financial equity in Texas/Mexico border schools compared to those in East Texas. Race and racism were not direct influencers in the data collected, however, race and racism still permeate the overall decision-making process in some music competition outcomes. The data collected speaks volumes of neoliberalism and market-based education theory with its direct links to standardized testing.

Abstract

The experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) migrant youth are often found in between narratives, complicated by the current political climate that makes it difficult for migrant students to disclose information about their lives. In this two-year ethnography of a public school that serves LGBTQ young people, the author suggests that teachers and education practitioners must learn to not only recognize the subtext of student narratives--the recognition of ethnographic silence and to listen for what is not being said--but also to create safe spaces in schools where LGBTQ migrant students feel comfortable to reveal identities without fear of reprisal. Antecedentes: La familia es la institución donde el individuo desarrolla lo humano para alcanzar las normas y conductas que le permiten convivir de manera aceptable dentro de su grupo social. Objetivos: Establecer la relación entre funcionalidad familiar y riesgo de salud mental en cuatro instituciones educativas del Sur Occidente de Barranquilla Materiales y Métodos: estudio de enfoque cuantitativo, de tipo descriptivo correlacional, de corte transversal. Se contó con una muestra de 143 participantes. Los instrumentos utilizados para la recolección de información fueron el APGAR familiar y el cuestionario de auto reportaje de síntomas psiquiátricos SRQ. Resultados: Se evidenció funcionalidad familiar leve en la mayoría de los participantes. En el 20% de los encuestados se encontró disfunción familiar severa, en los cuales existió correlación de sintomatología de riesgo en salud mental. Conclusiones: se confirma la importancia de los contextos familiares, existiendo influencia directa de las relaciones familiares, en el desarrollo de síntomas depresivos y de estrés. Background: The family is the institution where the individual develops the human to achieve the norms and behaviors that allow them to coexist in an acceptable way within their social group. Objectives: To establish the relationship between family functionality and mental health risk in four educational institutions in the South West of Barranquilla Materials and Methods: study with a quantitative approach, descriptive correlational type, cross-sectional. There was a sample of 143 participants. The instruments used to collect information were the family APGAR and the SRQ psychiatric symptoms self-report questionnaire. Results: Mild family functionality was evidenced in most of the participants. In 20% of those surveyed, severe family dysfunction was found, in which there was a correlation of risk symptoms in mental health. Conclusions: the importance of family contexts is confirmed, with a direct influence of family relationships in the development of depressive and stress symptoms.

Abstract

Neural tube defects have a multifactorial etiology, involving not only genetic factors but also environmental. Among several generating factors, it´s evident the support and importance of folic acid in reducing or even preventing the occurrence of malformations. This water soluble vitamin is related closely with the synthesis of DNA and RNA and, therefore, with the fetal development. It was implemented in the country the mandatory fortification of flour and corn flour with iron and folic acid, reducing the occurrence of anomalies in 35%. Meanwhile, higher levels of daily supplementation greater than 5mg of folic acid reduce between 75% and 91%. This fact demonstrates the relevance and benefits of the implementation of folate prenatal. The ideal period for this would be the periconceptional administration, which comprises about 1-3 months before pregnancy and up to four months after conception. This study aims to evaluate the prevalence of congenital neural tube defects in infants under five years old in Campos dos Goytacazes, through a case-control study, so that possible risk factors can be analyzed for the occurrence of such abnormalities in young nurseling in this city. For the analysis of the distribution of neural tube effects have been used the following variables: socioeconomic, educational level, maternal age, whether or not the use of folic acid, conducting prenatal, among others. The sample that is collected is the simple probabilistic random, and the period of the study comprises 1st March 2016 until May 30 2017. These project attend the 2012 version of Resolution 196/96 CNS relating to questions of ethics in research involving humans. As anomalias congênitas, possuem etiologia multifatorial, envolvendo aspectos genéticos e ambientais. Entre diversos fatos geradores, é evidente a importância do ácido fólico na redução ou mesmo prevenção de malformações. Esta vitamina relaciona-se com a síntese de DNA e RNA, portanto, com o desenvolvimento fetal. Foi implementada no País a fortificação compulsória das farinhas de trigo e milho com ferro e ácido fólico resultando em redução de anomalias em 35%. Já níveis diários de suplementação medicamentosa superiores a 5mg de ácido fólico reduz entre 75% e 91%. Tal fato demonstra a relevância e benefícios do folato no pré-natal. O período ideal de administração seria o periconcepcional, de 1 a 3 meses antes da gestação e até 4 meses após a concepção. Este estudo objetiva avaliar a prevalência de Anomalias Congênitas do tubo neural de menores de 5 anos de idade no município de Campos dos Goytacazes-RJ, através de um estudo de caso controle para serem analisados possíveis fatores de risco para ocorrência de tais anormalidades. Para análise da distribuição de defeitos do tubo neural foram usadas as variáveis: nível socioeconômico e educacional, idade materna, utilização ou não do ácido fólico, realização de pré-natal, número de consultas, entre outras. A amostra coletada é do tipo probabilística aleatória simples, período de realização, 1º de março de 2016 à 30 de maio de 2017. Abstract

El presente documento trata inicialmente las generalidades de la Cocada como un dulce típico de la región pacifica de Colombia y continuando con la participación de las exportaciones de dulces colombianas. Además, tiene como objetivo fundamental identificar la factibilidad del mercado para la exportación de cocadas hacía Perú. Teniendo en cuenta los hábitos de consumo con respecto al producto en el país de destino; Se realizó en una matriz de mercado donde se evaluaron 17 variables que fueron decisivas para determinar cuál sería el mejor país para realizar la exportación, dentro de las variables evaluadas se encuentran las importaciones y exportaciones del producto (coco) que en nuestro caso es la principal materia prima, PIB, inflación, deflación, entre otros; al realizar la evaluación y comparación se obtuvieron 5 países Costa Rica, República Dominicana, Japón, Chile y Perú, que fueron el primer insumo a analizar, después de comparar los resultados de los cinco países, se determinó que la mejor opción para realizar la exportación es Perú. Para lo anterior se realizó una investigación descriptiva, utilizando técnicas de recolección secundarias, revistas, internet, Procolombia, Legiscomex, Trademap, requisitos de entrada al país de destino, convenios comerciales entre Colombia y Perú. Se hará una propuesta puntual del terminó de negociación, las acciones a desarrollar para la introducción de la cocada al mercado peruano, los costos de producción, transporte, el empaque y el embalaje para el producto. Por ser una exportación, la negociación se realiza en moneda extranjera (dólar), lo cual hace necesario elaborar un análisis financiero con tres Tasas representativas del Mercado (TRM). Lo anterior supone elaborar una cotización y una comparación de precios de la competencia nacional e internacional, esto permitió obtener una aproximación al costo total de la exportación. Por último, la pretensión del presente trabajo fue facilitar las herramientas necesarias para efectuar una exportación de Cocadas a Perú Proyecto de grado (Profesional en mercadeo y negocios internacionales)-- Universidad Autónoma de Occidente, 2018.
