The evidence for periods of increased volcanic activity following deglaciation, such as following ice sheet retreat after the Last Glacial Maximum, has been examined in several formerly glaciated areas, including Iceland, Alaska, and the Andean Southern Volcanic Zone. Here we present new evidence supporting the theory that during episodes of cooling in the Holocene, Icelandic volcanic activity decreased. By examining proximal and distal tephra records from Iceland spanning the last 12,500 years, we link two observed tephra minima to documented periods of climatic cooling and glacial advance, at 8.3 to 8 and 5.2 to 4.9 cal kyr BP. We simulate these periods in atmosphere-ocean and ice sheet models to assess the potential validity of the postglacial ‘unloading effect’ on Icelandic volcanic systems. We conclude that an increase in glacial cover may have decreased shallow magma ascent rates, thus limiting eruption potential and producing apparent quiescent periods in proximal and distal tephra records. However, several major uncertainties remain regarding the theory, including geographical and temporal preservation biases and the importance of any unloading effects against other factors, and these will require more prolonged investigation in future research.

Over the last few years, efforts to model short-term deformations of the Earth’s crust have multiplied. Sudden water level rise can cause sporadic, but significant, motions in the solid Earth’s surface. In this work, we address the problem of retrieving reliable estimates of the vertical displacement of a Global Positioning System (GPS) station located very close to the eastern shore of the La Plata River, during a strong storm surge event. Capturing sub-daily GPS displacements demands an elaborate processing strategy because several highly correlated parameters must be estimated simultaneously. We present a successful strategy that reduces the number of unknowns that have to be estimated simultaneously, by using an empirical model that describes the elastic response of the Earth’s crust to the hydrological load variations. We incorporate this model into the observation equations so that, instead of estimating the station position, we estimate every epoch a single parameter of the empirical model, i.e., the empirical elastic parameter EEP, that is assumed to be a constant of the Earth’s crust in the region of the GPS station. We verify that the estimated parameter agrees well with the value calculated from the CRUST 1.0-A model of the Earth’s crust. The GPS receiver was tied to an external cesium clock, which allowed us to process the data according to two different strategies: (a) estimating the receiver clock error (Δt) as an epoch-wise free parameter, which is equivalent to ignoring the presence of the external clock, and (b) conditioning the variability of that estimate with a small a priori variance compatible with the external clock’s variability. We introduce Global Positioning System (GPS) Imaging, a new technique for robust estimation of the vertical velocity field of the Earth's surface, and apply it to the Sierra Nevada Mountain range in the western United States. Starting with vertical position time series from Global Positioning System (GPS) stations, we first estimate vertical velocities using the MIDAS robust trend estimator, which is insensitive to undocumented steps, outliers, seasonality, and heteroscedasticity. Using the Delaunay triangulation of station locations, we then apply a weighted median spatial filter to remove velocity outliers and enhance signals common to multiple stations. Finally, we interpolate the data using weighted median estimation on a grid. The resulting velocity field is temporally and spatially robust and edges in the field remain sharp. Results from data spanning 5–20 years show that the Sierra Nevada is the most rapid and extensive uplift feature in the western United States, rising up to 2 mm/yr along most of the range. The uplift is juxtaposed against domains of subsidence attributable to groundwater withdrawal in California's Central Valley. The uplift boundary is consistently stationary, although uplift is faster over the 2011–2016 period of drought. Uplift patterns are consistent with groundwater extraction and concomitant elastic bedrock uplift, plus slower background tectonic uplift.
