Abstract

The new JINR project [1] is aimed at studies of highly excited nuclear matter created in nuclei by a high-energy deuteron beam. The matter is studied through observation of its particular decay products - pairs of energetic particles with a wide opening angle, close to 180°. The new precision hybrid magnetic spectrometer SCAN-3 is to be built for detecting charged (π±, K±, p) and neutral (n) particles produced at the JINR Nuclotron internal target in dA collisions. One of the main and complex tasks is a study of low-energy ηA interaction and a search for η-bound states (η-mesic nuclei). Basic elements of the spectrometer and its characteristics are discussed in the article.

Abstract

The response of silicon-silicon-CsI(Tl) telescopes, developed within the FAZIA collaboration, to fragments produced in nuclear reactions 84Kr+120-124Sn at 35 A MeV, has been used to study ion identification methods. Two techniques are considered for the identification of the nuclear products in the silicon stages. The standard ΔE−E one requires signals induced in two detection layers by ions punching through the first one. Conversely, the digital Pulse Shape Analysis (PSA) allows the identification of ions stopped in the first silicon layer. The capabilities of these two identification methods have been compared for different mountings of the silicons, i.e. rear (particles entering through the low electric field side) or front (particles entering through the high electric field side) side injection. The ΔE−E identification method gives exactly the same results in both configurations. At variance, the pulse shape discrimination is very sensitive to the detector mounting. In case of rear side injection, the identification with the "energy vs. charge rise time" PSA method presents energy thresholds which are significantly lower than in the case of front side injection.

Abstract

The response of a few silicon-silicon-CsI(Tl) and silicon-silicon telescopes with high quality detectors developed within the FAZIA collaboration [1] is tested in this work. The silicon detectors were manufactured from “random cut” wafers to avoid channeling effects and are characterized by a high dopant homogeneity. One siliconsilicon telescope was mounted on a rotating platform to compare its response in case of front and rear injection. Another silicon detector was mounted on a motorized support, sliding to angles very close to the beam (~0.5°), in order to measure the effects of radiation damage on energy resolution and PSA. Beams of 84Kr and 129Xe at 35A MeV, impinging on targets of natNi, 93Nb, 120Sn and Au, produced fragments over a large range of charge, mass and energy. The aim was to explore the capabilities of various solutions exploiting the digital techniques of Pulse Shape Analisys (PSA) for the Z and A identification of stopped ions. It has been found that PSA is able to fully discriminate the charge of stopped ions up to the maximum available Z (that of the beam, Z=54). The ΔE-E correlations of the first two silicon detectors can separate all the nuclides up to Z~25 and no difference in resolution between front and rear injection is observed. The experimental data also provide some preliminary information about the effects of radiation damage on energy resolution and PSA for high fluences of heavy ions.

Abstract

The preemission of neutrons from 11Li halo nuclei is considered. The present problems of investigation of 11Li halo nucleus structure by means of the C nn correlation function are briefly presented. The influence of the target screening on the halo neutron preemission is described. It is shown that, owing to the diminishing of the screening effect, the yield of preemission neutron pairs is expected to be much larger in the case of 12C than in the case of Si target. It is shown that a new experiment on a 12C target will allow one to solve the standing problems of C nn and to test experimentally a recent new theory of C nn. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

An experiment with a new array detector aiming the investigation of halo neutron pair pre-emission in Si(11Li, fusion) has been performed. New approaches for testing the true n-n coincidences against cross-talk have been worked out. Experimental evidence for residual correlation of the pre-emitted halo neutrons was found. The results obtained in building the nn correlation functions by using the available denominators are discussed. An experiment for getting the intrinsic n-n correlation function is proposed. Abstract

The level of three alkylphenols (APs) 4-nonylphenol, 4-octylphenol and 4-tert-octylphenol was monitored in various water samples using a new developed and validated HPLC method. The HPLC method employed a column with a mixed-mode stationary phase (C18/SCX) using a mobile phase of water to methanol = 15:85 (v/v) delivered at a flow rate of 1 mL/min at room temperature. Both diode array, DAD and fluorescence, FLD detectors were employed. The method is linear when APs concentration ranged from 0.025 to 0.5 μg/mL with a DAD detection at 279 nm and between 0.0008 and 0.1 μg/mL when the detection was made by FLD (excitation at 220 nm, emission at 315 nm). The limit of detection and limit of quantitation for alkylphenols were found to be 5 and 15 ng/mL, respectively (detection by DAD). The method was employed with good results for the determination of APs in the presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in various water samples.

Abstract

A simple, sensitive and reliable HPLC-FLD method for the routine determination of 4-nonylphenol, 4-NP and 4-tert-octylphenol, 4-t-OP content in water samples was developed. The method consists in a liquid-liquid extraction of the target analytes with dichloromethane at pH  3.0-3.5 followed by the HPLC-FLD analysis of the organic extract using a Zorbax Eclipse XDB C8 column, isocratic elution with a mixed solvent acetonitrile/water 65:35, at a flow rate of 1.0 mL/min and applying a column temperature of 40°C. The method was validated and then applied with good results for the determination of 4-NP and 4-t-OP in Ialomiţa River water samples collected each month during 2006. The concentration levels of 4-NP and 4-t-OP vary between 0.08-0.17 μg/L with higher values of 0.24-0.37 μg/L in the summer months for 4-NP, and frequently <0.05 μg/L but also between 0.06-0.09 μg/L with higher values of 0.12-0.16 μg/L in July and August for 4-t-OP and were strongly influenced by sesonial and anthropic factors. The method was also applied on samples collected over 2 years 2007 and 2008 from urban wastewaters discharged into sewage or directly into the rivers by economic agents located in 30 Romanian towns. Good results were obtained when the method was used for analysis of effluents discharged into surface waters by 16 municipal wastewater treatment plants, during the year 2008.
