The chemical recycling of cellulosic fibres may represent a next-generation fibre–fibre recycling system for cotton textiles, though remaining challenges include how to accommodate fibre blends, dyes, wrinkle-free finishes, and other impurities from finishing. These challenges may disrupt the regeneration process steps and reduce the fibre quality. This study examines the impact on regenerated viscose fibre properties of a novel alkaline/acid bleaching sequence to strip reactive dyes and dimethyloldihydroxyethyleneureas (DMDHEU) wrinkle-free finish from cotton textiles. Potentially, such a bleaching sequence could advantageously be integrated into the viscose process, reducing the costs and environmental impact of the product. The study investigates the spinning performance and mechanical properties (e.g., tenacity and elongation) of the regenerated viscose fibres. The alkaline/acid bleaching sequence was found to strip the reactive dye and DMDHEU wrinkle-free finish from the cotton fabric, so the resulting pulp could successfully be spun into viscose fibres, though the mechanical properties of these fibres were worse than those of commercial viscose fibres. This study finds that reactive dyes and DMDHEU wrinkle-free finish affect the viscose dope quality and the regeneration performance. The results might lead to progress in overcoming quality challenges in cellulosic chemical recycling.

In this study, poly(vinyl alcohol) nanofibres were produced and evaluated for wound dressing applications. However, the solubility of the poly(vinyl alcohol) matrix in the aqueous medium generally limits its applications. To overcome this problem, 1,2,3,4 butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA) and citric acid (CA) were used as crosslinking agents. Successful bead-free nanofibres were produced, and they both preserved their fibrous structure after water treatment. The mean fibre diameters of polycarboxylic acid crosslinked nanofibres were lower compared to pure PVA nanofibres. Although the morphology of BTCA and CA crosslinked nanofibres was similar, the swelling degree of PVA/CA was found to be higher. Furthermore, toxicity and keratinocyte cell proliferation performance of produced PVA/BTCA and PVA/CA nanofibres indicated that these nanofibrous materials could be used in wound dressing applications. © 2017, Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

Blends based on protein hydrolysate (PH), derived from waste products of the leather industry, and poly(ethylene-co-vinyl acetate) (EVA), were obtained by reactive blending and their physico-chemical properties as well as their mechanical and rheological behavior were evaluated. The effect of vinyl acetate content and of a transesterification agent added to increase interaction between polymer and bio-based components were investigated. Novel biodegradable polymeric materials for spray mulching coatings were also obtained from hydrolyzed proteins and end-functionalized poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG), which was used as crosslinking agent. These products, almost entirely obtained from renewable sources, represent a new type of biodegradable material which looks promising for several applications, for instance in packaging or in agriculture as transplanting or mulching films with additional fertilizing action of PH. The development of antimicrobial cotton fabrics using chitosan/silver-zeolite film has been investigated in the present work. The film was applied to 100% cotton fabric using a common pad-dry-cure technique and citric acid was used as crosslinking agent. The resulting fabrics were characterized through infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), contact angle and scanning electron microscopy with X-ray microanalysis (SEM/EDS). The antimicrobial activity of the fabrics was assessed through the viable-cell counting method and the materials showed activity against S. aureus and T. rubrum. The textile performance of the fabrics was analysed regarding their characteristics of hydrophilicity and breathability. The finishing did not change the hydrophilic behaviour of the material. Although the permeability to air has reduced 20%, the permeability to water vapour remained practically unchanged. In this study, water-repellent, oil-repellent and flame-retardant cotton fabrics were developed by solgel technique. With this aim, nanosols were prepared using tetraethylorthosilicate and hexadecyltrimethoxysilane as precursors, guanidine dihydrogen phosphate as flame-retardant agent and Guard AFB as conventional water–oil-repellent agent, solvents and chelating agents. Then, to AC105, VA7110, PU1110 and FC9005 as polymeric additives, with/without FX8000 or urea and formaldehyde as cross-linking agents, were added some nanosols to improve washing fastness of the fabric samples. Cotton fabrics were treated with nanosols without polymeric additives by pad–dry–cure process, while they were coated with nanosols containing polymeric additives by knife-over-roll coating. Water–oil-repellent properties, flame-retardant properties, washing fastness, contact angle, whiteness, tear strength and add-on values of the coated fabric samples were determined. It was found that the cotton fabrics with good water–oil-repellence and flame-retardant properties with relatively durable properties could be produced using nanosols containing guanidine dihydrogen phosphate and urea, together with tetraethylorthosilicate and hexadecyltrimethoxysilane as precursors, and lower concentrations of Guard AFB as commercial water–oil-repellent agent. However, the fabric samples were still not sufficiently durable when washed. It was deduced that the durability of cotton fabric during washing is developed by means of treatment with nanosols containing polyvinyl acetate-based polymer. © 2016 The Textile Institute.

During this thesis, derivatives of vegetable oils are used to synthesize bio-resistant bio plasticizers for PVC and plasticizer / cross linker for an elastomer (EPDM). The oils possess ester functional groups which allow the solubilization of PVC and fatty chains compatible with EPDM. The reactions of epoxide ring-opening of fatty esters to di esters (symmetrical and asymmetrical) have been studied and applied mainly to the plasticization of PVC. The ring-opening of epoxides of fatty esters to ether-esters has also been studied, primarily for plasticization of EPDM. Optimization of the reaction conditions was carried: homogeneous (TBACl) and heterogeneous (TiO2) catalysts were efficient for the preparation of hydroxy-ester, and sulfonic resins in ether and the esterification of residual hydroxyls. A wide variety of reagents selected according to desired application were used. The derivative cyclohexanoate / acetate rapeseed methyl esters present the best plasticizing properties for PVC but it is unfortunately not bio-resistant. Ether-ester derivatives are not stable thermally and do not allow the plasticization of EPDM. A relatively non-polar di-unsaturated derivative (oleyl oleate) was synthesized for the plasticization and cross linking of EPDM. Several reactions are considered to link the oil and the polymer (hydrosilylation, ene- reaction and metathesis), but the reactivity is too low to allow the cross linking, Dans le cadre de cette thèse, les dérivés d’huiles végétales sont utilisés pour la synthèse de bioplastifiants bio-résistants pour le PVC d’une part et la plastification et la réticulation d’un élastomère d’autre part (EPDM). Les huiles ont été choisies comme matières premières renouvelables car elles ont des fonctions esters qui permettent la solubilisation du PVC et des chaines grasses compatibles avec l’EPDM. Les réactions d’ouvertures d’époxydes d’esters gras en di-esters (symétriques et dissymétriques) ont été étudiées et principalement appliquées à la plastification du PVC. L’ouverture des époxydes d’esters gras en éther-esters a aussi été étudiée, principalement pour la plastification de l’EPDM. Les conditions réactionnelles ont été optimisées par l’étude de catalyseurs, homogène (TBACl) et hétérogène (TiO2) pour l’ouverture en hydroxy-ester, et par des résines sulfoniques pour l’ouverture en éther et pour l’estérification des hydroxyles résiduels. Une large variété de réactifs choisis suivant l’application désirée a été utilisée. Le dérivé cyclohexanoate/acétate d’esters méthyliques de colza présente les meilleures propriétés plastifiantes pour le PVC mais il n’est malheureusement pas biorésistant. Les dérivés éther-ester ne sont pas stables thermiquement et ne permettent pas la plastification de l’EPDM. Un dérivé di-insaturé et peu polaire (oléate d’oléyle) a été synthétisé en vue de la plastification et la réticulation de l’EPDM. A mild and efficient one-pot method has been developed for the stereoselective synthesis of structurally diverse novel iminosugar C-alkynylglycosides. The generality of this methodology has been demonstrated with a wide variety of amines and copper acetylides. This one-pot method has been exploited in the synthesis of new class of DNA cross-linking agents, polyhydroxy 1-vinyl-tetrahydroindolizine derivatives. � 2015 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. In this work we have developed polymeric materials from epoxidized vegetable oils in order to obtain materials with excellent mechanical properties for use as green matrix composites. Epoxidized soybean oil (ESO), epoxidized linseed oil (ELO) and different mixtures of the two oils were used to produce the polymers. Phthalic anhydride (17 mol%) and maleic anhydride (83 mol%) which has a eutectic reaction temperature of 48 °C were used as crosslinking agents while benzyl dimethyl amine (BDMA) and ethylene glycol were used as the catalyst and initiator, respectively. A new class of monodisperse macroporous beads in the hydrophilic form were synthesized by seeded microsuspension copolymerization of two acrylic crosslinking agents, glycerol dimethacrylate (GDMA) and glycerol-1,3-diglycerolate diacrylate (GDGDA). The monodisperse porous poly(glycerol dimethacrylate- co -glycerol-1,3-diglycerolate diacrylate), poly(GDMA- co -GDGDA) beads were highly hydrophilic in nature due to hydroxyl functionality resulting from both crosslinking agents. The beads with different particle sizes between 4.5 and 6.7 μm and with different porous properties were obtained by changing the seed latex to monomer ratio. The bead size decreased, the average pore size increased and the specific surface area decreased with increasing seed latex to monomer ratio. Poly(GDMA- co -GDGDA) beads were slurry packed in microbore and semimicro-HPLC columns and successfully used as a stationary phase in aqueous size exclusion chromatography (SEC) mode in a micro-liquid chromatography system. The aqueous SEC runs were performed by using dextran standards in the molecular weight range of 1000–670,000 Da. SEC calibration curves exhibiting linearity in a wider range of molecular weight were obtained with the semi-micro and micro-HPLC columns packed with the poly(GDMA- co -GDGDA) beads synthesized with the seed latex to monomer ratios of 0.038 and 0.058 g/mL. The dextran standards could be eluted in an analysis time shorter than 2 min using micro or semi-micro columns packed with poly(GDMA- co -GDGDA) beads as stationary medium. These packings are suitable for molecular weight determination between 5 × 10 3 and 5 × 10 5 Da in the aqueous medium by using mobile phase flow rates in the range of 25–250 μL/min. The average molecular weight determinations of different water soluble polymers, an ionic polymer, poly(2-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate), a zwitterionic polymer, poly([2-(methacryloyloxy)ethyl]dimethyl-(3-sulfopropyl)ammonium hydroxide), and a non-ionic polymer, poly(vinyl alcohol) were performed on a semimicro-column packed with the poly(GDMA- co -GDGDA) beads. Satisfactory results were obtained in the molecular weight determination of hydrophilic polymers by aqueous SEC.
