Abstract

• Different generations of EBSD detectors are compared for their use in high resolution, cross-correlation-based EBSD analysis. • Most detectors showed excellent precision in the cross-correlation measurements, but the direct detector tested showed a significant increase in the pattern acquisition rate. • The cross-correlation measurement precision was significantly increased when using pattern averaging for noisy patterns. Introduced over ten years ago, cross-correlation-based electron backscatter diffraction has enabled high precision measurements of crystallographic rotations and elastic strain gradients at high spatial resolution. Since that time, there have been remarkable improvements in electron detector technology, including the advent of ultra-high speed detectors and the commercialization of direct detectors. In this study, we assess the efficacy of multiple generations of electron detectors for cross-correlation-based analysis using a single crystal Si sample as a reference. We show that, while improvements in precision are modest, there have been significant gains in the rate at which high-quality diffraction patterns can be collected. Abstract

Characterization of synaptic connectivity is essential to understanding neural circuit dynamics. For extracellularly recorded spike trains, indirect evidence for connectivity can be inferred from short-latency peaks in the correlogram between two neurons. Despite their predominance in cortex, however, significant interactions between excitatory neurons (E) have been hard to detect because of their intrinsic weakness. By taking advantage of long duration recordings, up to 25 h, from rat prefrontal cortex, we found that 7.6% of the recorded pyramidal neurons are connected. This corresponds to ∼70% of the local E-E connection probability that has been reported by paired intracellular recordings (11.6%). This value is significantly higher than previous reports from extracellular recordings, but still a substantial underestimate. Our analysis showed that long recording times and strict significance thresholds are necessary to detect weak connections while avoiding false-positive results, but will likely still leave many excitatory connections undetected. In addition, we found that hyper-reciprocity of connections in prefrontal cortex that was shown previously by paired intracellular recordings was only present in short-distance, but not in long distance (∼300 micrometers or more) interactions. As hyper-reciprocity is restricted to local clusters, it might be a minicolumnar effect. Given the current surge of interest in very high-density neural spike recording (e.g., NIH BRAIN Project) it is of paramount importance that we have statistically reliable methods for estimating connectivity from cross-correlation analysis available. We provide an important step in this direction.

Abstract

In the study the cross correlations between Turkey stock market volatility and the stock market volatilities of BRICS countries are investigated in the period from February 3, 2012 to June 1, 2018. This study contributes to the literature by employing the MF-X-DMA method to analyse the effect of stock market volatilities of the BRICS countries to the Turkish stock market. Emprical results show that cross correlations between volatilities of Turkey-Brazil, volatilities of Turkey-Russia, volatilities of Turkey-India, volatilities of Turkey-China and volatilities of Turkey-South Africa have strong multifractal features. Abstract

Probabilistic site characterization is the cornerstone of data-centric geotechnics, which underpins the digitalization in geotechnical engineering. The essential aspect of probabilistic site characterization is to reasonably infer the probability density distributions of geotechnical parameters, based on field and laboratory data. In this paper, a clay property database, SZ-CLAY/11/5130, was established by collecting geotechnical investigation reports from 52 engineering projects in Shenzhen city. This SZ-CLAY/11/5130 database was first compared with the global clay database CLAY/10/7490 and the Shanghai clay database SH-CLAY/11/4051, in terms of their sample ranges, correlations, and scatter plots. Then, the multivariate probability distribution of eight clay parameters was established using the training records selected from SZ-CLAY/11/5130, to characterize the generic correlations between multiple clay parameters. Based on Bayesian theory, the posterior distributions of clay mechanical parameters from a construction site in Shenzhen city were updated using both the site-specific correlations and the generic correlations given by SZ-CLAY/11/5130. Abstract

Daily dynamics of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and cultivable bacterial populations have rarely been examined. The objectives were: (1) to investigate if dynamics of GHG emissions can be described by harmonics and are related to those of cultivable bacteria after soil disturbances in three grassland management systems; (2) to determine to which extent daily GHG emissions are related to environmental variables rather than disturbance events in two climate zones; and (3) to investigate differences in GHG emissions between organic and conventional tilled grassland versus no-till long-term grassland systems (OG, CG and LG, respectively). In replicated field experiments with OG, CG, and LG plots in the Netherlands and Russia, GHG (CO 2 , N 2 O and CH 4 ) emissions and cultivable bacterial populations were measured daily during two one-month periods at each location. Tillage, fertilization, biomass incorporation and irrigation were considered disturbances. The dynamics were subjected to harmonics, cross-correlation, and canonical correspondence analyses (CCA). The dynamics of cultivable bacterial populations and GHG fluxes rarely reflected autonomous growth and death cycles of bacteria after a disturbance due to the overarching influences of environmental conditions, especially in spring. Thus, GHG emissions were influenced more by weather variables than by agronomic disturbances. This was confirmed by CCA. Cultivable bacterial populations were cross correlated with CO 2 fluxes and sometimes N 2 O emissions, but generally not with CH 4 fluxes. Average cultivable bacterial populations and CO 2 emissions were highest in OG and lowest in LG; N 2 O emissions were mostly highest in CG and lowest in LG; and CH 4 fluxes were frequently highest in OG and lowest in LG. Thus, although bacteria and GHG peaks were induced by disturbances, sometimes followed by autonomous oscillations due to growth and death cycles and associated cycles in nutrient and oxygen availability, the dynamics were mainly affected by environmental variables and long-term management, with the smallest GHG emissions from LG plots. Abstract

The dynamics and conformational landscape of proteins in organic solvents are events of potential interest in nonaqueous process catalysis. Conformational changes, folding transitions, and stability often correspond to structural rearrangements that alter contacts between solvent molecules and amino acid residues. However, in nonaqueous enzymology, organic solvents limit stability and further application of proteins. In the present study, molecular dynamics (MD) of a thermostable Geobacillus zalihae T1 lipase was performed in different chain length polar organic solvents (methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, and pentanol) and water mixture systems to a concentration of 50%. On the basis of the MD results, the structural deviations of the backbone atoms elucidated the dynamic effects of water/organic solvent mixtures on the equilibrium state of the protein simulations in decreasing solvent polarity. The results show that the solvent mixture gives rise to deviations in enzyme structure from the native one simulated in water. The drop in the flexibility in H2O, MtOH, EtOH and PrOH simulation mixtures shows that greater motions of residues were influenced in BtOH and PtOH simulation mixtures. Comparing the root mean square fluctuations value with the accessible solvent area (SASA) for every residue showed an almost correspondingly high SASA value of residues to high flexibility and low SASA value to low flexibility. The study further revealed that the organic solvents influenced the formation of more hydrogen bonds in MtOH, EtOH and PrOH and thus, it is assumed that increased intraprotein hydrogen bonding is ultimately correlated to the stability of the protein. However, the solvent accessibility analysis showed that in all solvent systems, hydrophobic residues were exposed and polar residues tended to be buried away from the solvent. Distance variation of the tetrahedral intermediate packing of the active pocket was not conserved in organic solvent systems, which could lead to weaknesses in the catalytic H-bond network and most likely a drop in catalytic activity. The conformational variation of the lid domain caused by the solvent molecules influenced its gradual opening. Formation of additional hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions indicates that the contribution of the cooperative network of interactions could retain the stability of the protein in some solvent systems. Time-correlated atomic motions were used to characterize the correlations between the motions of the atoms from atomic coordinates. The resulting cross-correlation map revealed that the organic solvent mixtures performed functional, concerted, correlated motions in regions of residues of the lid domain to other residues. These observations suggest that varying lengths of polar organic solvents play a significant role in introducing dynamic conformational diversity in proteins in a decreasing order of polarity.

Abstract

The primary objective of this work is to look for any conceivable link between the geomagnetic storm and coronal mass ejection (CME) events. The relevant data for both CME and geomagnetic storm occurrences have been obtained from the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory mission's LASCO and the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center, respectively, for the same time span (February 1999 to December 2007). We performed Multivariate Singular Spectral Analysis (MSSA), Semblance Analysis, and Multifractal cross-correlation detrended fluctuation (MFXDFA) analysis to achieve our target. We also applied MSSA to investigate the causal link between the two data sets mentioned above. The analysis identifies the supportiveness factor between the data series and the possibility of a one-way statistical relationship between the data series is also verified. Then, Semblance and MFXDFA were used to detect the presence of any conceivable local phase relationship (time and frequency-dependent) and cross-correlation in the data sets. To make our analysis more persuasive, we must use all three methods. The Semblance analysis reveals positive and negative phase correlation between the signals under investigation at different time sub-intervals, whilst the MFXDFA validates the long-term power-law cross-correlations. Abstract

Feedback delays in balance are often assessed using muscle activity onset latencies in response to discrete perturbations. The purpose of the study was to calculate EMG latencies in perturbed handstand, and determine if delays are different to unperturbed handstand. Twelve national level gymnasts completed 12 perturbed and 10 unperturbed (five eyes open and five closed) handstands. Forearm EMG latencies during perturbed handstands were assessed against delay estimates calculated via: cross correlations of wrist torque and COM displacement, a proportional and derivative model of wrist torque and COM displacement and velocity (PD model), and a PD model incorporating a passive stiffness component (PS-PD model). Delays from the PD model (161±14ms) and PS-PD model (188±14ms) were in agreement with EMG latencies (165±14ms). Cross correlations of COM displacement and wrist torque provided unrealistically low estimates (5±9ms). Delays were significantly lower during perturbed (188±14ms) compared to unperturbed handstand (eyes open: 207±12ms; eyes closed: 220±19ms). Significant differences in delays and model parameters between perturbed and unperturbed handstand support the view that balance measures in perturbed testing should not be generalised to unperturbed balance. Abstract

This paper compares the performances of the most commonly used keypoint detectors and descriptors (SIFT, SURF, KAZE, AKAZE, ORB, and BRISK) for Relative Radiometric Normalization (RRN) of unregistered bitemporal multi-spectral images. The keypoints matched between subject and reference images represent possible unchanged regions and are used in forming a Radiometric Control Set (RCS). The initial RCS is further refined by removing the matched keypoints with a low cross-correlation. The final RCS is used to approximate a linear mapping between the corresponding bands of the subject and reference images. This procedure is validated on five datasets of unregistered multi-spectral image pairs acquired by inter/intra sensors in terms of RRN accuracy, visual quality, quality and quantity of the samples in the RCS, and computing time. The experimental results show that keypoint-based RRN is robust against variations in spatial-resolution, illumination, and sensors. The blob detectors (SURF, SIFT, KAZE, and AKAZE) are more accurate on average than the corner detectors (ORB and BRISK) in RRN. However, they are slower in computing. Abstract

Next-generation X-ray sources, based on the X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) concept, will provide highly coherent, ultrashort pulses of soft and hard X-rays with peak intensity many orders of magnitude higher than that of a synchrotron. These pulses will allow studies of femtosecond dynamics at nanometer resolution and with chemical selectivity. They will produce diffraction images of organic and inorganic nanostructures without deleterious effects of radiation damage.

13. Statistical regularities of Carbon emission trading market: Evidence from European Union allowances.

Abstract

As an emerging financial market, the trading value of carbon emission trading market has definitely increased. In recent years, the carbon emission allowances have already become a way of investment. They are bought and sold not only by carbon emitters but also by investors. In this paper, we analyzed the price fluctuations of the European Union allowances (EUA) futures in European Climate Exchange (ECX) market from 2007 to 2011. The symmetric and power-law probability density function of return time series was displayed. We found that there are only short-range correlations in price changes (return), while long-range correlations in the absolute of price changes (volatility). Further, detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) approach was applied with focus on long-range autocorrelations and Hurst exponent. We observed long-range power-law autocorrelations in the volatility that quantify risk, and found that they decay much more slowly than the autocorrelation of return time series. Our analysis also showed that the significant cross correlations exist between return time series of EUA and many other returns. These cross correlations exist in a wide range of fields, including stock markets, energy concerned commodities futures, and financial futures. The significant cross-correlations between energy concerned futures and EUA indicate the physical relationship between carbon emission and energy production process. Additionally, the cross-correlations between financial futures and EUA indicate that the speculation behavior may become an important factor that can affect the price of EUA. Finally we modeled the long-range volatility time series of EUA with a particular version of the GARCH process, and the result also suggests long-range volatility autocorrelations. 15. Leak location based on PDS-VMD of leakage-induced vibration signal under low SNR in water-supply pipelines

Abstract

Leak location in water-supply pipelines is of great significance in order to preserve water resources and reduce economic losses. Cross-correlation (CC) based leak location is a popular and effective method in water-supply pipelines (WSP). However, with a decrease of signal to noise ratio (SNR), the errors of time-delay estimation (TDE) based on CC will become larger making it almost impossible to determine a leakage position. Hence, this work proposes leak location based on a combination of phase difference spectrum and variational mode decomposition (PDS-VMD) of leakage-induced vibration signal under low SNR for WSP. Firstly, the leakage-induced vibration signal is decomposed into several intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) by VMD, where the characteristic frequency band is determined by PDS of cross spectrum of two leakage signals. Then, the energy ratio of leakage signal in characteristic frequency band serves as a guideline to select effective IMF components from the decomposed IMFs. Finally, the selective IMFs are reconstituted into a new signal which can be used to determine a leak position using CC based TDE. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed leak location algorithm, the method based on PDS-VMD is compared with that using CC, combination of CC coefficient and VMD (CCC-VMD) using both simulation and experiment. The simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed PDS-VMD method is more suitable for leak location in WSP, which provides immunity to both broadband and narrow band noise under low SNR. © 2020 IEEE.

Abstract

Entanglement, viz. the non-separability of quantum states, is a fundamental prediction of quantum mechanics, which is at odds with the classical perception of reality. Furthermore, it constitutes a resource for quantum computation and quantum communication. Electronic degrees of freedom in nanostructures -in particular the spin -constitute promising candidates to implement quantum information architectures in scalable solid state circuits. In this topical review, we will summarize some efforts to create and detect entanglement in such structures. We concentrate first on entanglement in double quantum dots, since they promise to be viable candidates to produce entanglement by confining electrons to a small interaction region. The quantitative detection of the entanglement through transport measurements can be done via current and noise. Secondly, we concentrate on the creation of spin entanglement at quantum point contacts, which has the advantage that the two electrons are automatically spatially separated. We discuss the possibility of performing a Bell test of non-local correlations. However, as we will point out, a reliable entanglement detection can be performed by current-correlation measurements, although they require some trust in the experimental setup. Finally, we present a hierarchy of mesoscopic Bell tests, which could be useful to evaluate theoretical proposals and experimental setups. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

DES Collaboration: et al., In recent years, many γ-ray sources have been identified, yet the unresolved component hosts valuable information on the faintest emission. In order to extract it, a cross-correlation with gravitational tracers of matter in the Universe has been shown to be a promising tool. We report here the first identification of a cross-correlation signal between γ rays and the distribution of mass in the Universe probed by weak gravitational lensing. We use data from the Dark Energy Survey Y1 weak lensing data and the Fermi Large Area Telescope 9-yr γ-ray data, obtaining a signal-to-noise ratio of 5.3. The signal is mostly localized at small angular scales and high γ-ray energies, with a hint of correlation at extended separation. Blazar emission is likely the origin of the small-scale effect. Abstract

Abstract: In previous parts of this series we analyzed experimental times series that represent pressure fluctuation in a fluidized bed. Part I focused on the existence of long-range correlations in the series, and demonstrated that the multiscale probability density function of the successive increments of the data may be well-approximated by the Castaing equation that has been proposed for modeling velocity fluctuations in turbulent flows. Part II reconstructed the time series and demonstrated that they can be well-represented by the Fokker–Planck and Langevin equations, which provide probabilistic predictions for the future trends of the pressure. In the present paper we study cross correlations between the time series, measured at three locations in the fluidized bed. Past analyses had presumed that the time series are stationary, or that they can be transformed to one. The pressure time series are not, however, always stationary. Three distinct, but complementary methods that are suitable for non-stationary series are used to analyze the cross correlations. They are the multifractal detrended cross-correlation analysis (MF-DXA), the so-called Q cc (m) test in conjunction with the statistical test – the distribution – and the cross wavelet transform (XWT) function. The Q cc (m) test provides qualitative evidence for the presence of the cross correlations, whereas the MF-DXA identifies and quantifies the strength of long-range cross correlations between simultaneously recorded time series. The analysis by the MF-DXA also indicates that the pressure time series and the cross correlations between them are multifractal, hence confirming the long-range nature of the correlations identified in Part I. The results are confirmed further by the XWT analysis. The effect of time scales on the correlations and cross correlations is studied in detail. It is shown that such correlations exist at all the time scales. The cross correlations are then used for characterization of bubble sizes, bubbling frequency, and the sources of the pressure fluctuations. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

20. Template-Based Image Reconstruction from Sparse Tomographic Data

Abstract

We propose a variational regularisation approach for the problem of template-based image reconstruction from indirect, noisy measurements as given, for instance, in X-ray computed tomography. An image is reconstructed from such measurements by deforming a given template image. The image registration is directly incorporated into the variational regularisation approach in the form of a partial differential equation that models the registration as either mass- or intensity-preserving transport from the template to the unknown reconstruction. We provide theoretical results for the proposed variational regularisation for both cases. In particular, we prove existence of a minimiser, stability with respect to the data, and convergence for vanishing noise when either of the abovementioned equations is imposed and more general distance functions are used. Numerically, we solve the problem by extending existing Lagrangian methods and propose a multilevel approach that is applicable whenever a suitable downsampling procedure for the operator and the measured data can be provided. Finally, we demonstrate the performance of our method for template-based image reconstruction from highly undersampled and noisy Radon transform data. We compare results for mass- and intensity-preserving image registration, various regularisation functionals, and different distance functions. Our results show that very reasonable reconstructions can be obtained when only few measurements are available and demonstrate that the use of a normalised cross correlation-based distance is advantageous when the image intensities between the template and the unknown image differ substantially., QC 20200907

In a sample of 103 wrestlers, aged from 19 to 24 years, was applied the system a total of 29 variables, of which 12 morphological variables and 17 motor abilities vari-ables, in order to determine the correlation results of canonical correlation analysis showed that the relations between the canonical factor from the system variables of variables motor abilities, which was interpreted as the integral canonical general fac-tor of motor ability wrestlers and canonical factor of the system variables of the mor-phological characteristics, interpreted as an integral canonical factor of growth and body development, shows that the statistically significant level (p=.000), which means that the wrestlers of this quality level and these morphological characteristics are achieving very good results in motor abilities, which thoroughly confirms the hypoth-esis of a positive connection between these two fields. Based on the results acquired in the research in this way, it could be concluded that is necessary to have on motor abil-ity wrestlers and optimal morphological development being developed at the integral interactive basis for perfojTnance of particular variables from the system motor abili-ties. 22. Will the US economy recover in 2010? A minimal spanning tree study

Abstract: We calculated the cross correlations between the half-hourly times series of the ten Dow Jones US economic sectors over the period February 2000 to August 2008, the two-year intervals 2002–2003, 2004–2005, 2008–2009, and also over 11 segments within the present financial crisis, to construct minimal spanning trees (MSTs) of the US economy at the sector level. In all MSTs, a core-fringe structure is found, with consumer goods, consumer services, and the industrials consistently making up the core, and basic materials, oil & gas, healthcare, telecommunications, and utilities residing predominantly on the fringe. More importantly, we find that the MSTs can be classified into two distinct, statistically robust, topologies: (i) star-like, with the industrials at the center, associated with low-volatility economic growth; and (ii) chain-like, associated with high-volatility economic crisis. Finally, we present statistical evidence, based on the emergence of a star-like MST in Sep 2009, and the MST staying robustly star-like throughout the Greek Debt Crisis, that the US economy is on track to a recovery. 23. Money-price relation in Malaysia: has it disappeared or strengthened?

Abstract

The paper analyzes empirically the money-price link for the case of Malaysia using quarterly data from 1978 to 2006. Looking at the correlations between cyclical components of monetary aggregates (M1, M2 and M3) and of the price level, we note that the significant correlations documented between money and price during 1978-1987 tend to disappear or become perverse during late 1980s and 1990s. However, for the case of M2 and M3 monetary aggregates, their significant relations with the price level reemerge during 1998-2006. While time series analyses of cointegration and vector autoregressions (VAR) are uncertain in suggesting the pre-1998 relations between broader monetary aggregates (M2 and M3) and the price level, we note the declining role of M1 monetary aggregate in anticipating future variations in the price level for the recent sample. However, the significant causal influences of M2 and M3 are apparent post-1998. Our results further suggest 4-6-quarter lagged effect of monetary aggregates on the price level. We tend to conclude that the broad monetary aggregates especially M3 is useful for the conduct of monetary policy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We report experimental observation and numerical simulation of a two-dimensional multiplet effect in the heteronuclear correlation spectrum of a paramagnetic protein that depends on molecular geometry. This effect arises as a consequence of cross-correlated relaxation involving the Curie spin relaxation and internuclear dipolar relaxation mechanisms. It also manifests itself in resolution and sensitivity improvement in transverse relaxation optimised spectroscopy (TROSY) kind of experiments. Characteristic multiplet patterns in heteronuclear coupled two-dimensional NMR spectra encode directional information for the heteronuclear bond with respect to the paramagnetic center. These patterns, which are simulated here using Redfield's relaxation theory, can be used to obtain a new type of geometry restriction for structure determination and refinement of paramagnetic macromolecular systems. Abstract

International audience; The 2013 Aigion earthquake swarm that took place in the west part of Corinth Gulf is investigated for revealing faulting and seismicity properties of the activated area. The activity started on May 21 and was appreciably intense in the next 3 months. The recordings of the Hellenic Unified Seismological Network (HUSN), which is adequately dense around the affected area, were used to accurately locate 1501 events. The double difference (hypoDD) technique was employed for the manually picked P and S phases along with differential times derived from waveform cross-correlation for improving location accuracy. The activated area with dimensions 6 × 2 km is located approximately 5 km SE of Aigion. Focal mechanisms of 77 events with M ≥ 2.0 were determined from P wave first motions and used for the geometry identification of the ruptured segments. Spatio-temporal distribution of earthquakes revealed an eastward and westward hypocentral migration from the starting point suggesting the division of the seismic swarm into four major clusters. The hypocentral migration was corroborated by the Coulomb stress change calculation, indicating that four fault segments involved in the rupture process successively failed by stress change encouragement. Examination of fluid flow brought out that it cannot be unambiguously considered as the driving mechanism for the successive failures.

Transit-time ultrasonic flow meters are based on the fundamental idea that the flow is the only non-reciprocal effect between an upstream and downstream measurement. Non-identical transducers can be used in a reciprocal manner if the circuit is made reciprocal. In this paper we analyze the effect of driver- and readout electronics on the zero-flow error in transit-time ultrasonic flow meters by simulation and measurement. Using the frequency characteristic of two nonidentical transducers, the cause of the zero-flow error in nonreciprocal circuits is evaluated. Both simulation and measurement results show that the lowest zero-flow error can be obtained by using circuits that have an impedance significantly higher or lower than the impedance of the transducers. © 2018 IEEE.

This paper shows that tomography algorithms using guided waves in plate-like structures and cross-correlation of ambient noise can be combined to process the passive tomography of a structure. This can make a very robust and low power SHM system. An active tomography image has been performed with a time-of-flight tomography algorithm using experimental data produced by piezoelectric transducers. Abstract

The paper discusses the possibility of applying multifractal cross-correlation analysis method for the joint processing of transient biomedical signals received via the Radiophysical complex MRTHR (Medical Radio-Thermograph - Heart Rate) for rehabilitations estimations. The results of the multifractal cross-correlation analysis application are shown for research the role of the autonomic regulation in the formation of the brain microwave radiation (intrinsic electromagnetic radiation of the brain) in the treatment process. A pilot clinical study obtained by the multichannel Radiophysical complex MRTHR had shown the dynamics discrepancies of cross-correlation Hurst exponent coincides with the clinical data for patients after passing through the course of rehabilitation using techniques of the dynamic correction activity of the sympathetic nervous system. Next generation X ray sources based on the X ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) concept will provide highly coherent ultrashort pulses of soft and hard X rays with peak intensity many orders of magnitude higher than that of a synchrotron. These pulses will allow studies of femtosecond dynamics at nanometer resolution and with chemical selectivity. Abstract

The dynamics and conformational landscape of proteins in organic solvents are events of potential interest in nonaqueous process catalysis. Conformational changes, folding transitions, and stability often correspond to structural rearrangements that alter contacts between solvent molecules and amino acid residues. However, in nonaqueous enzymology, organic solvents limit stability and further application of proteins. In the present study, molecular dynamics (MD) of a thermostable Geobacillus zalihae T1 lipase was performed in different chain length polar organic solvents (methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, and pentanol) and water mixture systems to a concentration of 50%. On the basis of the MD results, the structural deviations of the backbone atoms elucidated the dynamic effects of water/organic solvent mixtures on the equilibrium state of the protein simulations in decreasing solvent polarity. The results show that the solvent mixture gives rise to deviations in enzyme structure from the native one simulated in water. The drop in the flexibility in H2O, MtOH, EtOH and PrOH simulation mixtures shows that greater motions of residues were influenced in BtOH and PtOH simulation mixtures. Comparing the root mean square fluctuations value with the accessible solvent area (SASA) for every residue showed an almost correspondingly high SASA value of residues to high flexibility and low SASA value to low flexibility. The study further revealed that the organic solvents influenced the formation of more hydrogen bonds in MtOH, EtOH and PrOH and thus, it is assumed that increased intraprotein hydrogen bonding is ultimately correlated to the stability of the protein. However, the solvent accessibility analysis showed that in all solvent systems, hydrophobic residues were exposed and polar residues tended to be buried away from the solvent. Distance variation of the tetrahedral intermediate packing of the active pocket was not conserved in organic solvent systems, which could lead to weaknesses in the catalytic H-bond network and most likely a drop in catalytic activity. The conformational variation of the lid domain caused by the solvent molecules influenced its gradual opening. Formation of additional hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interactions indicates that the contribution of the cooperative network of interactions could retain the stability of the protein in some solvent systems. Time-correlated atomic motions were used to characterize the correlations between the motions of the atoms from atomic coordinates. The resulting cross-correlation map revealed that the organic solvent mixtures performed functional, concerted, correlated motions in regions of residues of the lid domain to other residues. These observations suggest that varying lengths of polar organic solvents play a significant role in introducing dynamic conformational diversity in proteins in a decreasing order of polarity.

Abstract

Daily dynamics of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and cultivable bacterial populations have rarely been examined. The objectives were: (1) to investigate if dynamics of GHG emissions can be described by harmonics and are related to those of cultivable bacteria after soil disturbances in three grassland management systems; (2) to determine to which extent daily GHG emissions are related to environmental variables rather than disturbance events in two climate zones; and (3) to investigate differences in GHG emissions between organic and conventional tilled grassland versus no-till long-term grassland systems (OG, CG and LG, respectively). In replicated field experiments with OG, CG, and LG plots in the Netherlands and Russia, GHG (CO2, N2O and CH4) emissions and cultivable bacterial populations were measured daily during two one-month periods at each location. Tillage, fertilization, biomass incorporation and irrigation were considered disturbances. The dynamics were subjected to harmonics, cross-correlation, and canonical correspondence analyses (CCA). The dynamics of cultivable bacterial populations and GHG fluxes rarely reflected autonomous growth and death cycles of bacteria after a disturbance due to the overarching influences of environmental conditions, especially in spring. Thus, GHG emissions were influenced more by weather variables than by agronomic disturbances. This was confirmed by CCA. Cultivable bacterial populations were cross correlated with CO2 fluxes and sometimes N2O emissions, but generally not with CH4 fluxes. Average cultivable bacterial populations and CO2 emissions were highest in OG and lowest in LG; N2O emissions were mostly highest in CG and lowest in LG; and CH4 fluxes were frequently highest in OG and lowest in LG. Thus, although bacteria and GHG peaks were induced by disturbances, sometimes followed by autonomous oscillations due to growth and death cycles and associated cycles in nutrient and oxygen availability, the dynamics were mainly affected by environmental variables and long-term management, with the smallest GHG emissions from LG plots.

Abstract

We propose a practical, simple and hardware friendly, yet novel and efficient, angle of arrival (AoA) estimation system. Our intuitive, two-phases cross-correlation-based system requires a switched beam antenna array with a single radio frequency circuitry, which is used to collect an omni-directional reference signal using a single element of the antenna array in the first phase. Our system applies energy detection on the collected reference signal to decide on the presence or absence of a transmitted signal. In the second phase, the system steers the main beam to scan the angular region of interest. The collected signal from each beam angle is cross correlated with the omni-directional reference signal to determine the angle of arrival of the received signal. The combined practicality and high efficiency of our system is demonstrated through performance and complexity comparisons with one of the literature's best performing multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm. Our proposed AoA estimation system has a negligible root mean square error at signal to noise ratio level greater than -16 dB, which is very comparable to MUSIC. 2013 IEEE. We develop a novel bipolar two-dimensional coding scheme for optical code-division multiple-access (OCDMA) communication systems. The coding scheme is based on complementary spectral amplitude coding of broad-band sources in the wavelength domain and as such enables multi-user operation and bipolar signaling. To significantly increase the number of simultaneous users a spreading sequence in the time domain is imposed on the wavelength domain coding. Abstract

Conference Code:124064; International audience; Structural health monitoring (SHM) consists in embedding sensors in a structure in order to monitor its health status throughout its lifetime. The implementation of SHM systems is restricted in many situations by the necessity to store or to harvest the electric energy necessary to emit the waves which give information about the health of the structure. A promising way to tackle this constraint is to take advantage of the elastic noise naturally present in the structure in order to avoid the emission of the elastic waves by the SHM system. The complexity of the embedded SHM system is therefore reduced. We present here studies of a passive technique-the ambient elastic noise cross-correlation-applied to guided wave tomography. Experimental results which come from usual time-of-flight tomography as well as passive tomography will be described.

Abstract

International audience; We demonstrate analytically that a single matched antenna absorbs 100% of the electromagnetic energy in a perfect time-reversal (TR) experiment. In contrast to TR with pointlike antennas, the usual diverging wave at positive times vanishes. When the antenna is not perfectly matched, the amplitude of this diverging wave relative to the converging one is equal to the impedance mismatch. This result is confirmed in measurements in a mode-stirred electromagnetic reverberation chamber. We finally discuss the impact of this result on the cross-correlation of a random wavefield with two absorbing receivers. © 2016 IEEE.

Abstract

We present a novel single-shot cross-correlation scheme based on the measurement of the transverse second harmonic generation (TSHG) in crystals with randomly distributed nonlinear ferroelectric domains. We implement it to the measurement of the temporal shape of ultrashort laser pulses with unknown temporal profile. This technique combines the capability of typical intensity cross-correlation methods in pulse shape measurement with the advantages of the TSHG and ca be applied to a wide range of pulse durations and wavelength, without any requirement of angular alignment or temperature control.

The principles of processing signals of Radiophysical complex MRTHR for studying the role of autonomic regulation in the formation of the brain microwave radiation during the treatment process are presented. The feature of this complex is the possibility of registration and analysing the non-stationary short-term time series of the brain microwave radiation and heart rate variability signals. The processing is implemented via the method of multifractal cross-correlation analysis. The results of the fluctuation and cross-correlation Hurst exponent estimations of these signals are shown. The estimates for a group of relatively healthy patients have low levels of systemic discrepancy. For the patients group with ischemic stroke before treatment the systematic discrepancy of estimations are significantly larger than those of healthy patients. Abstract

Passive imaging refers to problems where waves generated by unknown sources are recorded and used to image the medium through which they travel. The sources are typically modelled as a random variable and it is assumed that some statistical information is available. In this paper we study the stochastic wave equation ∂ t 2 u − Δ g u = χ W , where W is a random variable with the white noise statistics on R 1 + n , n ≥ 3 , χ is a smooth function vanishing for negative times and outside a compact set in space, and Δ g is the Laplace–Beltrami operator associated to a smooth non-trapping Riemannian metric tensor g on R n . The metric tensor g models the medium to be imaged, and we assume that it coincides with the Euclidean metric outside a compact set. We consider the empirical correlations on an open set X ⊂ R n , C T ( t 1 , x 1 , t 2 , x 2 ) = 1 T ∫ 0 T u ( t 1 + s , x 1 ) u ( t 2 + s , x 2 ) d s , t 1 , t 2 > 0 , x 1 , x 2 ∈ X , for T > 0 . cited By 2; International audience; Magnetoelectric (ME) effect, triggered much interests because of its potential of the cross correlation between the electric and magnetic properties of matter for technical applications such as magnetic field sensors, transducers, actuators. Magnetoelectric (ME) effect represents the coupling between a change in electric polarization in a solid when a magnetic field is applied. This study reports on the magnetoelectric (ME) effect observed in nanocomposite polymer consisting of polyurethane (PU) filled with 2.5wt% and 5wt% of Fe3C magnetic nanoparticles. In general, the electric response to an applied magnetic field (H) on polymer composites filled by magnetic particles is not well known. That is the reason why our study aims to show the influence of the magnetic fillers (Fe3C) in PU matrix. Our experimental findings are discussed for different situations. © 2016 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

Abstract

We present a novel single-shot cross-correlation scheme based on the measurement of the transverse second harmonic generation (TSHG) in crystals with randomly distributed nonlinear ferroelectric domains. We implement it to the measurement of the temporal shape of ultrashort laser pulses with unknown temporal profile. Poster session: Signal Processing Theory and Methods I (6 October 2009)., The discrete multiwavelet transform (DMWT) enables a signal to be analyzed in a multiresolution and multidimensional way. While the generated multiwavelet coefficients are vectors in nature, it has been generally understood that correlation exists between the vector elements. This feature has been adopted particularly in image coding applications to allow efficient design of VQ codebook. For a multiresolution analysis, the multiwavelet coefficients are generated from the multiscaling coefficients of the upper level. In this paper, we show that many multiwavelet systems cannot give correlated multiscaling vector elements, as different from the multiwavelet vector elements. But for those that can give correlated multiscaling vector elements, they can provide much information to assist in identifying the "blank" regions in a noisy signal. A new denoising algorithm is then proposed based on this feature and is particularly useful for sparse source signals.

Abstract

Far-field and nearfield acoustic measurements have been conducted on equal and unequal twin circular slot jet for different spacing ratios. The twin jets were operated at high, moderate and low levels of underexpanded flow conditions. Measurement of acoustic power index, OASPL, spectra and shock-cell visualization have been carried out to evaluate equal and unequal twin jets. The results indicate that unequal twin jets are efficient screech tone suppressors at high and moderate levels of underexpanded flow conditions but are ineffective at lower levels of underexpansion. The cross correlation studies reveal an antisymmetric coupling for moderately underexpanded equal twin jet and symmetric coupling for low levels of underexpanded unequal twin jet. � 2015 Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract

We report the results of a joint analysis of data from BICEP2/Keck Array and Planck. BICEP2 and Keck Array have observed the same approximately 400 deg2 patch of sky centered on RA 0 h, Dec. −57.5°. The combined maps reach a depth of 57 nK deg in Stokes Q and U in a band centered at 150 GHz. Planck has observed the full sky in polarization at seven frequencies from 30 to 353 GHz, but much less deeply in any given region (1.2 μK deg in Q and U at 143 GHz). We detect 150×353 cross-correlation in B modes at high significance. We fit the single- and cross-frequency power spectra at frequencies ≥150 GHz to a lensed-ΛCDM model that includes dust and a possible contribution from inflationary gravitational waves (as parametrized by the tensor-to-scalar ratio r), using a prior on the frequency spectral behavior of polarized dust emission from previous Planck analysis of other regions of the sky. We find strong evidence for dust and no statistically significant evidence for tensor modes. We probe various model variations and extensions, including adding a synchrotron component in combination with lower frequency data, and find that these make little difference to the r constraint. Finally, we present an alternative analysis which is similar to a map-based cleaning of the dust contribution, and show that this gives similar constraints. Abstract

Marine laminated sediments in dysoxic areas of the ocean floor are an excellent archive for high-resolution climate reconstructions. While the existence of discontinuities produced by natural events, such as underwater landslides (slumps), strong bottom currents, and/or bioturbation is usually acknowledged for long records, the extent of their influence on high-resolution sequences is usually not considered. In the present work we show strong evidence for multiple stratigraphic discontinuities in different gravity and box-cores retrieved off Pisco (Peru) covering the last 600 years. Chronostratigraphies are largely based on cross-correlation of distinct sedimentary structures (determined by X-ray image analysis) and validated using 210Pb, 241Am, and 14C profiles, as well as proxy records. The cross-correlation of distinct stratigraphic layers allows for chronostratigraphic tie points and clearly shows that some sedimentary sequences are continuous across scales of tens of kilometers, indicating that regional processes often determine laminae formation. Some differences in laminae thickness were found among cores, which could be explained by different sedimentation rates, spatially variable deposition of diatom blooms, changes in silica dissolution and partial deposition/erosion caused by bottom currents. Using multiple stratigraphic tie points provides clear evidence for laminated sequences present in some cores to be missing in other cores. Moreover, instantaneous depositions from upslope were identified in all the cores disrupting the continuity of the sediment records. These discontinuities (instantaneous deposits and missing sequences) may be due to slumps, possibly triggered by earthquakes and/or erosion by strong bottom currents. In spite of the missing sequences in some cores, a continuous composite record of the last six centuries was reconstructed from spliced sequences of the different cores, which provides a well-constrained temporal framework to develop further high-resolution proxies in this region. The present work shows that paleoreconstructions developed from single cores, particularly in areas with strong seismic activity and/or strong bottom currents, are subject to both temporal gaps and instantaneous depositions from upslope, both of which could be misinterpreted as abrupt climate changes or anomalous climate events. We stress the need for multiple cores to determine the stratigraphic continuity and chronologies for high-resolution records.

The method assumes the frozen atmosphere model and works with temporal cross-correlation functions that do not need to be maximized. The method also applies to the well-known case of slant scans based on the multiple-angle azimuth technique (horizontal wind retrievals).
