When doped with a high density of mobile charge carriers, monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) semiconductors can host new types of composite many-particle exciton states that do not exist in conventional semiconductors. Such multi-particle bound states arise when a photoexcited electron-hole pair couples to not just a single Fermi sea that is quantum-mechanically distinguishable (as for the case of conventional charged excitons or trions), but rather couples simultaneously to \textit{multiple} Fermi seas, each having distinct spin and valley quantum numbers. Composite six-particle ``hexciton'' states were recently identified in electron-doped WSe$_2$ monolayers, but under suitable conditions they should also form in all other members of the monolayer TMD family. Here we present spectroscopic evidence demonstrating the emergence of many-body hexcitons in charge-tunable WS$_2$ monolayers (at the A-exciton) and MoSe$_2$ monolayers (at the B-exciton). Direct detection of spontaneous spin fluctuations, or "magnetization noise", is emerging as a powerful means of revealing and studying magnetic excitations in both natural and artificial frustrated magnets. Depending on the lattice and nature of the frustration, these excitations can often be described as fractionalized quasiparticles possessing an effective magnetic charge. Here, by combining ultrasensitive optical detection of thermodynamic magnetization noise with Monte Carlo simulations, we reveal emergent regimes of magnetic excitations in artificial "tetris ice". A marked increase of the intrinsic noise at certain applied magnetic fields heralds the spontaneous proliferation of fractionalized excitations, which can diffuse independently, without cost in energy, along specific quasi-1D spin chains in the tetris ice lattice., Comment: published in PNAS (2023)

We use magnetoresistance measurements at high magnetic field (B \leq 65 T) and low temperature (T \geq 500 mK) to gain fresh insights into the behavior of the upper critical field, Hc2, in superconducting ultrathin FeSe films of varying degrees of disorder, grown by molecular beam epitaxy on SrTiO3. Measurements of Hc2 across samples with a widely varying superconducting critical temperature (1.2 K \leq Tc \leq 21 K) generically show similar qualitative temperature dependence. We analyze the temperature dependence of Hc2 in the context of Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg (WHH) theory. The analysis yields parameters that indicate a strong Pauli paramagnetic pair-breaking mechanism which is also reflected by pseudo-isotropic superconductivity in the limit of zero temperature. In the lower Tc samples, we observe a spin-orbit scattering driven enhancement of Hc2 above the strongly-coupled Pauli paramagnetic limit. We also observe clear deviations from WHH theory at low temperature, regardless of Tc. We attribute this to the multi-band superconductivity of FeSe and possibly to the emergence of a low temperature, high field superconducting phase.

The photovoltaic and optoelectronic properties of lead halide perovskite semiconductors are controlled by excitons, so that investigation of their fundamental properties is of critical importance. The exciton Land\'e or g-factor g_X is the key parameter, determining the exciton Zeeman spin splitting in magnetic fields. The exciton, electron and hole carrier g-factors provide information on the band structure, including its anisotropy, and the parameters contributing to the electron and hole effective masses. We measure g_X by reflectivity in magnetic fields up to 60 T for lead halide perovskite crystals. The materials band gap energies at a liquid helium temperature vary widely across the visible spectral range from 1.520 up to 3.213 eV in hybrid organic-inorganic and fully inorganic perovskites with different cations and halogens: FA_{0.9}Cs_{0.1}PbI_{2.8}Br_{0.2], MAPbI_{3}, FAPbBr_{3}, CsPbBr_{3}, and MAPb(Br_{0.05}Cl_{0.95})_{3}. We find the exciton g-factors to be nearly constant, ranging from +2.3 to +2.7. Thus, the strong dependences of the electron and hole g-factors on the band gap roughly compensate each other when combining to the exciton g-factor. The same is true for the anisotropies of the carrier g-factors, resulting in a nearly isotropic exciton g-factor. The experimental data are compared favorably with model calculation results.

The recent observation of cyclotron resonance in optimally-doped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ using time-domain THz spectroscopy in high magnetic field has given new possibilities for the study of cuprate superconductors. One can measure the cyclotron mass in more disordered cuprates possesing short scattering times therefore expanding the study to materials and dopings in which quantum oscillations have not been observed. Here we present the measurement of the carrier mass of the hole doped cuprate La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ across a a range of dopings spanning the slightly underdoped ($x=0.13$) to highly overdoped ($x=0.26$), near to the termination of the superconducting dome. These results reveal a systematic increase of $m_c$ with doping, up to values greater than thirteen times the bare electron mass. This is in contrast with those masses extracted from the heat capacity, which show a peak near the pseudogap critical point $p^*$ and/or Lifshitz transition. The cyclotron frequency is linear in field up to 31 T for all dopings giving no evidence for field induced Fermi surface reconstructions. The cyclotron mass is found to be positive for all dopings, but with a magnitude systematically below the heat capacity mass for under and optimally doped samples, while exceeding it for overdoped samples. Among other aspects, these results are surprising as photoemission reveals a Lifshitz transition in the middle of our doping range and the sign of the cyclotron mass determined from a finite frequency resonance is -- in conventional theories -- a {\it topological quantity} only sensitive to whether or not the Fermi surface is closed around holes or electrons. We see no sign of a divergence of the mass near $p^*$ nor near the Lifshitz transition, showing that any singularity -- if it exists -- is not strong enough to affect the cyclotron mass., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Magnetoelectrics with ultra-low symmetry and spin-orbit coupling are well known to display a number of remarkable properties including nonreciprocal directional dichroism. As a polar and chiral magnet, Ni$_3$TeO$_6$ is predicted to host this effect in three fundamentally different configurations, although only two have been experimentally verified. Inspired by the opportunity to unravel the structure-property relations of such a unique light-matter interaction, we combined magneto-optical spectroscopy and first-principles calculations to reveal nonreciprocity in the toroidal geometry and compared our findings with the chiral configurations. We find that formation of Ni toroidal moments is responsible for the largest effects near 1.1 eV - a tendency that is captured by our microscopic model and computational implementation. At the same time, we demonstrate deterministic control of nonreciprocal directional dichroism in Ni$_3$TeO$_6$ across the entire telecom wavelength range. Applied magnetic fields are an important tuning parameter for artificial spin ice (ASI) systems, as they can drive phase transitions between different magnetic ground states, or tune through regimes with high populations of emergent magnetic excitations (e.g., monopole-like quasiparticles). Here, using simulations supported by experiments, we investigate the thermodynamic properties and magnetic phases of square and quadrupolar ASI as a function of applied in-plane magnetic fields. Monte Carlo simulations are used to generate field-dependent maps of the magnetization, the magnetic specific heat, the thermodynamic magnetization fluctuations, and the magnetic order parameters, all under equilibrium conditions. These maps reveal the diversity of magnetic orderings and the phase transitions that occur in different regions of the phase diagrams of these ASIs, and are experimentally supported by magneto-optical measurements of the equilibrium "magnetization noise" in thermally-active ASIs., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, in press at Physical Review B

Using time-resolved optical Kerr rotation, we measure the low temperature valley dynamics of resident electrons and holes in exfoliated WSe$_2$ monolayers as a systematic function of carrier density. In an effort to reconcile the many disparate timescales of carrier valley dynamics in monolayer semiconductors reported to date, we directly compare the doping-dependent valley relaxation in two electrostatically-gated WSe$_2$ monolayers having different dielectric environments. In a fully-encapsulated structure (hBN/WSe$_2$/hBN, where hBN is hexagonal boron nitride), valley relaxation is found to be monoexponential. The valley relaxation time $\tau_v$ is quite long ($\sim$10~$\mu$s) at low carrier densities, but decreases rapidly to less than 100~ns at high electron or hole densities $\gtrsim$2 $\times 10^{12}$~cm$^{-2}$. In contrast, in a partially-encapsulated WSe$_2$ monolayer placed directly on silicon dioxide (hBN/WSe$_2$/SiO$_2$), carrier valley relaxation is multi-exponential at low carrier densities. The difference is attributed to environmental disorder from the SiO$_2$ substrate. Unexpectedly, very small out-of-plane magnetic fields can increase $\tau_v$, especially in the hBN/WSe$_2$/SiO$_2$ structure, suggesting that localized states induced by disorder can play an important role in depolarizing spins and mediating the valley relaxation of resident carriers in monolayer transition metal-dichalcogenide semiconductors., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

Using high magnetic fields up to 60 T, we report magneto-transport and photoluminescence (PL) studies of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in a GaN/AlGaN heterojunction grown by molecular-beam epitaxy. Transport measurements demonstrate that the quantum limit can be exceeded (Landau level filling factor $\nu < 1$), and show evidence for the $\nu =2/3$ fractional quantum Hall state. Simultaneous optical and transport measurements reveal synchronous quantum oscillations of both the PL intensity and longitudinal resistivity in the integer quantum Hall regime. PL spectra directly reveal the dispersion of occupied Landau levels in the 2DEG and therefore the electron mass. These results demonstrate the utility of high (pulsed) magnetic fields for detailed measurements of quantum phenomena in high-density 2DEGs., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Artificial spin ices (ASIs) are interacting arrays of lithographically-defined nanomagnets in which novel frustrated magnetic phases can be intentionally designed. A key emergent description of fundamental excitations in ASIs is that of magnetic monopoles -- mobile quasiparticles that carry an effective magnetic charge. Here we demonstrate that the archetypal square ASI lattice can host, in specific regions of its magnetic phase diagram, high-density plasma-like regimes of mobile magnetic monopoles. By passively "listening" to spontaneous monopole noise in thermal equilibrium, we reveal their intrinsic dynamics and show that monopole kinetics are minimally correlated (that is, most diffusive) in the plasma phase. These results open the door to on-demand monopole regimes having field-tunable densities and dynamic properties, thereby providing a new paradigm for probing the physics of effective magnetic charges in synthetic matter., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures, 4 supplemental figures

Using time-domain terahertz spectroscopy in pulsed magnetic fields up to 31 T, we measure the terahertz optical conductivity in an optimally-doped thin film of the high temperature superconducting cuprate La$_{1.84}$Sr$_{0.16}$CuO$_4$. We observe systematic changes in the circularly-polarized complex optical conductivity that are consistent with cyclotron absorption of p-type charge carriers characterized by a cyclotron mass of $4.9\pm 0.8$ $m_{\rm e}$, and a scattering rate that increases with magnetic field. These results open the door to studies aimed at characterizing the degree to which electron-electron interactions influence carrier masses in cuprate superconductors., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

In semiconductor physics, many essential optoelectronic material parameters can be experimentally revealed via optical spectroscopy in sufficiently large magnetic fields. For monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenide semiconductors, this field scale is substantial --tens of teslas or more-- due to heavy carrier masses and huge exciton binding energies. Here we report absorption spectroscopy of monolayer MoS$_2$, MoSe$_2$, MoTe$_2$, and WS$_2$ in very high magnetic fields to 91~T. We follow the diamagnetic shifts and valley Zeeman splittings of not only the exciton's $1s$ ground state but also its excited $2s$, $3s$, ..., $ns$ Rydberg states. This provides a direct experimental measure of the effective (reduced) exciton masses and dielectric properties. Exciton binding energies, exciton radii, and free-particle bandgaps are also determined. The measured exciton masses are heavier than theoretically predicted, especially for Mo-based monolayers. In the non-collinear antiferromagnet Mn$_3$Sn, we compare simultaneous measurements of the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and the magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) through two magnetic phase transitions: the high-temperature paramagnetic/antiferromagnetic phase transition at the N\'eel temperature ($T_N \approx$420~K), and a lower-temperature incommensurate magnetic ordering at $T_1 \approx$270~K. While both the AHE and MOKE are sensitive to the same underlying symmetries of the antiferromagnetic non-collinear spin order, we find that the transition temperatures measured by these two techniques unexpectedly differ by approximately 10~K. Moreover, the applied magnetic field at which the antiferromagnetic order reverses is significantly larger when measured by MOKE than when measured by AHE. These results point to a difference between the bulk and surface magnetic properties of Mn$_3$Sn., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures; published in APL

Together with charge and spin degrees of freedom, many new 2D materials also permit information to be encoded in an electron's valley degree of freedom - that is, in particular momentum states in the material's Brillouin zone. With a view towards future generations of valley-based (opto)electronic technologies, the intrinsic timescales of scattering and relaxation between valleys therefore represent fundamental parameters of interest. Here we introduce and demonstrate an entirely passive, noise-based approach for exploring intrinsic valley dynamics in atomically-thin transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) semiconductors. Exploiting the valley-specific optical selection rules in monolayer TMDs, we use optical Faraday rotation to detect, under conditions of strict thermal equilibrium, the stochastic thermodynamic fluctuations of the valley polarization in a Fermi sea of resident carriers. Frequency spectra of this spontaneous "valley noise" reveal narrow Lorentzian lineshapes and therefore long exponentially-decaying intrinsic valley relaxation. Moreover, the valley noise signals are shown to validate both the relaxation times and the spectral dependence of conventional (perturbative) pump-probe measurements. These results provide a viable route toward quantitative measurements of intrinsic valley dynamics, free from any external perturbation, pumping, or excitation., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Cooperative effects allow for fascinating characteristics in light-matter interacting systems. Here, we study naturally occurring superradiant coupling in a class of quasi-two-dimensional, layered semiconductor systems. We perform optical absorption experiments of the lowest exciton for transition-metal dichalcogenides with different numbers of atomic layers. We examine two representative materials, MoSe$_2$ and WSe$_2$, using incoherent broadband white light. The measured transmission at the A exciton resonance does not saturate for optically thick samples consisting of hundreds of atomic layers, and the transmission varies nonmonotonously with the layer number. A self-consistent microscopic calculation reproduces the experimental observations, clearly identifying superradiant coupling effects as the origin of this unexpected behavior., Comment: [2018 Optical Society of America]. We use scanning optical magnetometry to study the broadband frequency spectra of spontaneous magnetization fluctuations, or "magnetization noise", in an archetypal ferromagnetic film that can be smoothly tuned through a spin reorientation transition (SRT). The SRT is achieved by laterally varying the magnetic anisotropy across an ultrathin Pt/Co/Pt trilayer, from the perpendicular to in-plane direction, via graded Ar$^+$ irradiation. In regions exhibiting perpendicular anisotropy, the power spectrum of the magnetization noise, $S(\nu)$, exhibits a remarkably robust $\nu^{-3/2}$ power law over frequencies $\nu$ from 1~kHz to 1~MHz. As the SRT region is traversed, however, $S(\nu)$ spectra develop a steadily-increasing critical frequency, $\nu_0$, below which the noise power is spectrally flat, indicating an evolving low-frequency cutoff for magnetization fluctuations. The magnetization noise depends strongly on applied in- and out-of-plane magnetic fields, revealing local anisotropies and also a field-induced emergence of fluctuations in otherwise stable ferromagnetic films. Finally, we demonstrate that higher-order correlators can be computed from the noise. These results highlight broadband spectroscopy of thermodynamic fluctuations as a powerful tool to characterize the interplay between thermal and magnetic energy scales, and as a means of characterizing phase transitions in ferromagnets.

Understanding the nature and energy distribution of optical resonances is of central importance in low-dimensional materials$^{1-4}$ and its knowledge is critical for designing efficient optoelectronic devices. Ruddlesden-Popper halide perovskites are 2D solution-processed quantum wells with a general formula A$_2$A'$_{n-1}$M$_n$X$_{3n+1}$, where optoelectronic properties can be tuned by varying the perovskite layer thickness (n value), and have recently emerged as efficient semiconductors with technologically relevant stability. However, fundamental questions concerning the nature of optical resonances (excitons or free-carriers) and the exciton reduced mass, and their scaling with quantum well thickness remains unresolved. Here, using optical spectroscopy and 60-Tesla magneto-absorption supported by modelling, we unambiguously demonstrate that the optical resonances arise from tightly bound excitons with unexpectedly high exciton reduced mass (0.20 m0) and binding energies varying from 470 meV to 125 meV with increasing thickness from n=1 to 5. Our work demonstrates the dominant role of Coulomb interactions in 2D solution-processed quantum wells and presents unique opportunities for next-generation optoelectronic and photonic devices., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures

In semiconductors, quantum confinement can greatly enhance the interaction between band carriers (electrons and holes) and dopant atoms. One manifestation of this enhancement is the increased stability of exciton magnetic polarons in magnetically-doped nanostructures. In the limit of very strong 0D confinement that is realized in colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals, a single exciton can exert an effective exchange field $B_{\rm{ex}}$ on the embedded magnetic dopants that exceeds several tesla. Here we use the very sensitive method of resonant photoluminescence (PL) to directly measure the presence and properties of exciton magnetic polarons in colloidal Cd$_{1-x}$Mn$_x$Se nanocrystals. Despite small Mn$^{2+}$ concentrations ($x$=0.4-1.6\%), large polaron binding energies up to $\sim$26~meV are observed at low temperatures via the substantial Stokes shift between the pump laser and the resonant PL maximum, indicating nearly complete alignment of all Mn$^{2+}$ spins by $B_{\rm{ex}}$. Temperature and magnetic field-dependent studies reveal that $B_{\rm{ex}} \approx$ 10~T in these nanocrystals, in good agreement with theoretical estimates. Further, the emission linewidths provide direct insight into the statistical fluctuations of the Mn$^{2+}$ spins. Using time-resolved Kerr rotation, we measure the spin/valley dynamics of resident electrons and holes in single charge-tunable monolayers of the archetypal transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) semiconductor WSe2. In the n-type regime, we observe long (70 ns) polarization relaxation of electrons that is sensitive to in-plane magnetic fields $B_y$, indicating spin relaxation. In marked contrast, extraordinarily long (2 microsecond) polarization relaxation of holes is revealed in the p-type regime, that is unaffected by $B_y$, directly confirming long-standing expectations of strong spin-valley locking of holes in the valence band of monolayer TMDs. Supported by continuous-wave Kerr spectroscopy and Hanle measurements, these studies provide a unified picture of carrier polarization dynamics in monolayer TMDs, which can guide design principles for future valleytronic devices., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We discuss the effect of external noisy magnetic fields on mesoscopic spin fluctuations that can be probed in semiconductors and atomic vapors by means of optical spin noise spectroscopy (SNS). We show that conventional arguments of the law of large numbers do not apply to spin correlations induced by external fields, namely, the magnitude of the 4th order spin cumulant grows as $\sim N^2$ with the number $N$ of observed spins, i.e. it is not suppressed in comparison to the 2nd order cumulant. This allows us to design a simple experiment to measure the 4th order cumulant of spin fluctuations in an atomic system near thermodynamic equilibrium and develop quantitative theory that explains all observations., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

We use spectrally-resolved magneto-electroluminescence (EL) measurements to study the energy dependence of hyperfine interactions between polaron and nuclear spins in organic LEDs. Using layered devices based on Bphen/MTDATA -- a well-known exciplex emitter -- we show that the increase in EL emission intensity $I$ due to small applied magnetic fields of order 100 mT is markedly larger at the high-energy blue end of the EL spectrum (dI/I ~11%) than at the low-energy red end (~4%). Concurrently, the widths of the magneto-EL curves increase monotonically from blue to red, revealing an increasing hyperfine coupling between polarons and nuclei and directly providing insight into the energy-dependent spatial extent and localization of polarons., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

In this work, we study the time- and temperature-dependence of optically induced magnetization in bulk crystals of slightly oxygen-deficient SrTiO$_{3-\delta}$ using an optically coupled SQUID magnetometer. We find that a weak ($\sim$5$\times$10$^{-7}$~emu) but extremely long-lived (hours) magnetic moment can be induced in SrTiO$_{3-\delta}$ at zero magnetic field by circular-polarized sub-bandgap light. We utilize this effect to demonstrate that SrTiO$_{3-\delta}$ crystals can be used as an optically addressable magnetic memory by writing and subsequently reading magnetic patterns with light. The induced magnetization is consistent with that of a polarized ensemble of independent oxygen-vacancy-related complexes, rather than from collective or long-range magnetic order., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

"Spin noise spectroscopy" (SNS) is a powerful optical technique for probing electron and hole spin dynamics that is based on detecting their intrinsic and random fluctuations while in thermal equilibrium, an approach guaranteed by the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Because SNS measures fluctuation properties rather than conventional response functions, we show that fluctuation \emph{correlations} can be exploited in multi-probe noise studies to reveal information that in general cannot be accessed by conventional linear optical spectroscopy, such as the underlying homogeneous linewidths of individual constituents within inhomogeneously-broadened systems. This is demonstrated in an ensemble of singly-charged (In,Ga)As quantum dots using two weak probe lasers: When the two lasers have the same wavelength, they are sensitive to the same QDs in the ensemble and their spin fluctuation signals are correlated. In contrast, two probe lasers that are widely detuned from each other measure different subsets of QDs, leading to uncorrelated fluctuations. Measuring the noise correlation versus laser detuning directly reveals the QD homogeneous linewidth even in the presence of a strong inhomogeneous broadening. Such noise-based correlation techniques are not limited to semiconductor spin systems, but can be widely applied to any system in which intrinsic fluctuations are measurable., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures

Per the fluctuation-dissipation theorem, the information obtained from spin fluctuation studies in thermal equilibrium is necessarily constrained by the system's linear response functions. However, by including weak radiofrequency magnetic fields, we demonstrate that intrinsic and random spin fluctuations even in strictly unpolarized ensembles \emph{can} reveal underlying patterns of correlation and coupling beyond linear response, and can be used to study non-equilibrium and even multiphoton coherent spin phenomena. We demonstrate this capability in a classical vapor of $^{41}$K alkali atoms, where spin fluctuations alone directly reveal Rabi splittings, the formation of Mollow triplets and Autler-Townes doublets, ac Zeeman shifts, and even nonlinear multiphoton coherences., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Strontium titanate (SrTiO$_3$) is a foundational material in the emerging field of complex oxide electronics. While its electronic and optical properties have been studied for decades, SrTiO$_3$ has recently become a renewed materials research focus catalyzed in part by the discovery of magnetism and superconductivity at interfaces between SrTiO$_3$ and other oxides. The formation and distribution of oxygen vacancies may play an essential but as-yet-incompletely understood role in these effects. Moreover, recent signatures of magnetization in gated SrTiO$_3$ have further galvanized interest in the emergent properties of this nominally nonmagnetic material. Here we observe an optically induced and persistent magnetization in oxygen-deficient SrTiO$_{3-\delta}$ using magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopy and SQUID magnetometry. This zero-field magnetization appears below ~18K, persists for hours below 10K, and is tunable via the polarization and wavelength of sub-bandgap (400-500nm) light. These effects occur only in oxygen-deficient samples, revealing the detailed interplay between magnetism, lattice defects, and light in an archetypal oxide material., Comment: 10 pages total

Strain-induced gradients of local electric fields in semiconductor quantum dots can couple to the quadrupole moments of nuclear spins. We develop a theory describing the influence of this quadrupolar coupling (QC) on the spin correlators of electron and hole "central" spins localized in such dots. We show that when the QC strength is comparable to or larger than the hyperfine coupling strength between nuclei and the central spin, the relaxation rate of the central spin is strongly enhanced and can be exponential. We present magnetization and magnetostriction studies of the insulating perovskite LaCoO3 in magnetic fields approaching 100 T. In marked contrast with expectations from single-ion models, the data reveal two distinct first-order spin transitions and well-defined magnetization plateaux. The magnetization at the higher plateau is only about half the saturation value expected for spin-1 Co3+ ions. These findings strongly suggest collective behavior induced by strong interactions between different electronic -- and therefore spin -- configurations of Co3+ ions. We propose a model of these interactions that predicts crystalline spin textures and a cascade of four magnetic phase transitions at high fields, of which the first two account for the experimental data., Comment: 5 pages + supplementary materials, 5 figures

The problem of how single "central" spins interact with a nuclear spin bath is essential for understanding decoherence and relaxation in many quantum systems, yet is highly nontrivial owing to the many-body couplings involved. Different models yield widely varying timescales and dynamical responses (exponential, power-law, Gaussian, etc). Here we detect the small random fluctuations of central spins in thermal equilibrium (holes in singly-charged (In,Ga)As quantum dots) to reveal the timescales and functional form of bath-induced spin relaxation. This spin noise indicates long (400 ns) spin correlation times at zero magnetic field, that increase to $\sim$5 $\mu$s as hole-nuclear coupling is suppressed with small (100 G) applied fields. Using ultrahigh magnetic fields up to 170 T and polarized midinfrared radiation with tunable wavelengths from 9.22 to 10.67 um, we studied cyclotron resonance in large-area graphene grown by chemical vapor deposition. Circular-polarization dependent studies reveal strong p-type doping for as-grown graphene, and the dependence of the cyclotron resonance on radiation wavelength allows for a determination of the Fermi energy. Thermal annealing shifts the Fermi energy to near the Dirac point, resulting in the simultaneous appearance of hole and electron cyclotron resonance in the magnetic quantum limit, even though the sample is still p-type, due to graphene's linear dispersion and unique Landau level structure. These high-field studies therefore allow for a clear identification of cyclotron resonance features in large-area, low-mobility graphene samples., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

We report magneto-photoluminescence studies of strongly quantum-confined "0-D" diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS), realized in Mn$^{2+}$-doped ZnSe/CdSe core/shell colloidal nanocrystals. In marked contrast to their 3-D (bulk), 2-D (quantum well), 1-D (quantum wire), and 0-D (self-assembled quantum dot) DMS counterparts, the ubiquitous yellow emission band from internal \emph{d-d} ($^4T_1 \rightarrow ^6A_1$) transitions of the Mn$^{2+}$ ions in these nanocrystals is \emph{not} suppressed in applied magnetic fields and \emph{does} become circularly polarized. This polarization tracks the Mn$^{2+}$ magnetization, and is accompanied by a sizable energy splitting between right- and left-circular emission components that scales with the exciton-Mn \emph{sp-d} coupling strength (which, in turn, is tunable with nanocrystal size). These data highlight the influence of strong quantum confinement on both the excitation and the emission mechanisms of magnetic ions in DMS nano-materials., Comment: To appear in Physical Review Letters

We measure the photoluminescence (PL) lifetime, $\tau$, of excitons in colloidal PbSe nanocrystals (NCs) at low temperatures to 270~mK and in high magnetic fields to 15~T. For all NCs (1.3-2.3~nm radii), $\tau$ increases sharply below 10~K but saturates by 500~mK. In contrast to the usual picture of well-separated ``bright" and ``dark" exciton states (found, e.g., in CdSe NCs), these dynamics fit remarkably well to a system having two exciton states with comparable - but small - oscillator strengths that are separated by only 300-900 $\mu$eV. Importantly, magnetic fields reduce $\tau$ below 10~K, consistent with field-induced mixing between the two states. Magnetic circular dichroism studies reveal exciton g-factors from 2-5, and magneto-PL shows $>$10\% circularly polarized emission., Comment: To appear in Physical Review Letters

We report a comprehensive study of stochastic electron spin fluctuations -- spin noise -- in lightly doped ($n$-type) bulk GaAs, which are measured using sensitive optical magnetometry based on off-resonant Faraday rotation. Frequency spectra of electron spin noise are studied as a function of electron density, magnetic field, temperature, probe laser wavelength and intensity, and interaction volume. Electron spin lifetimes $\tau_s$ are inferred from the width of the spin noise spectra, and are compared with direct measurements of $\tau_s$ using conventional Hanle effect methods. Both methods reveal a strong and similar dependence of $\tau_s$ on the wavelength and intensity of the probe laser, highlighting the undesired influence of sub-bandgap absorption effects on the nominally `non-perturbative' spin noise measurements. As a function of temperature, the spin noise power increases approximately linearly from 1.5 K to 30 K, as expected for degenerate electrons obeying Fermi-Dirac statistics, but with an additional zero-temperature offset. Finally, as the cross-sectional area of the probe laser shrinks and fewer electrons are probed, the measured Faraday rotation fluctuations due to electron spin noise are shown to increase, as expected., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figs

We measure the frequency spectra of random spin fluctuations, or "spin noise", in ensembles of (In,Ga)As/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) at low temperatures. We employ a spin noise spectrometer based on a sensitive optical Faraday rotation magnetometer that is coupled to a digitizer and field-programmable gate array, to measure and average noise spectra from 0-1 GHz continuously in real time with sub-nanoradian/root-Hz sensitivity. Both electron and hole spin fluctuations generate distinct noise peaks, whose shift and broadening with magnetic field directly reveal their g-factors and dephasing rates within the ensemble. A large, energy-dependent anisotropy of the in-plane hole g-factor is clearly exposed, reflecting systematic variations in the average QD confinement potential., Comment: 4 figures

Using Fe/GaAs Schottky tunnel barriers as electrical spin detectors, we show that the magnitude and sign of their spin-detection sensitivities can be widely tuned with the voltage bias applied across the Fe/GaAs interface. Experiments and theory establish that this tunability derives not just simply from the bias dependence of the tunneling conductances $G_{\uparrow,\downarrow}$ (a property of the interface), but also from the bias dependence of electric fields in the semiconductor which can dramatically enhance or suppress spin-detection sensitivities. Electrons in GaAs with fixed polarization can therefore be made to induce either positive or negative voltage changes at spin detectors, and some detector sensitivities can be enhanced over ten-fold compared to the usual case of zero-bias spin detection.

We study the low-temperature magneto-photoluminescence (PL) from individual CdSe nanocrystals. Nanocrystals having a small "bright" exciton fine structure splitting ($<$0.5 meV) exhibit a conventional left- and right-circularly polarized Zeeman PL doublet in applied magnetic fields. In contrast, nanocrystals with large fine structure splitting ($>$1 meV) show an anomalous magneto-PL polarization, wherein the lower-energy peak becomes circularly polarized with increasing field, while the higher-energy peak remains linearly polarized. This unusual behavior arises from strong mixing between the absorbing and emitting bright exciton levels due to strong anisotropic exchange interactions., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures; submitted

We have investigated excitons in highly-aligned single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) through optical spectroscopy at low temperature (1.5 K) and high magnetic fields ($\textbf{\textit{B}}$) up to 55 T. SWCNT/polyacrylic acid films were stretched, giving SWCNTs that are highly aligned along the direction of stretch ($\hat{n}$). Utilizing two well-defined measurement geometries, $\hat{n}\parallel\textbf{\textit{B}}$ and $\hat{n}\perp\textbf{\textit{B}}$, we provide unambiguous evidence that the photoluminescence energy and intensity are only sensitive to the $\textbf{\textit{B}}$-component parallel to the tube axis. A theoretical model of one-dimensional magneto-excitons, based on exchange-split `bright' and `dark' exciton bands with Aharonov-Bohm-phase-dependent energies, masses, and oscillator strengths, successfully reproduces our observations and allows determination of the splitting between the two bands as $\sim4.8$ meV for (6,5) SWCNTs., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We study the temperature-dependent modifications of trion and exciton photoluminescence (PL) spectra in modulation-doped CdTe/CdMgTe quantum wells in high magnetic field. We find that, in magnetic field, the temperature-dependent redistribution of exciton and trion PL intensities is opposite to that expected from a simple Boltzmann distribution model. Solving a system of rate equations that describe the exciton-trion energy levels, we calculate the temperature dependence of the exciton and trion PL intensities. The calculations show good agreement with the experimental data.

A longstanding goal of research in semiconductor spintronics is the ability to inject, modulate, and detect electron spin in a single device. A simple prototype consists of a lateral semiconductor channel with two ferromagnetic contacts, one of which serves as a source of spin-polarized electrons and the other as a detector. Based on work in analogous metallic systems, two important criteria have emerged for demonstrating electrical detection of spin transport. The first is the measurement of a non-equilibrium spin population using a non-local ferromagnetic detector through which no charge current flows. The potential at the detection electrode should be sensitive to the relative magnetizations of the detector and the source electrodes, a property referred to as the spin-valve effect. A second and more rigorous test is the existence of a Hanle effect, which is the modulation and suppression of the spin valve signal due to precession and dephasing in a transverse magnetic field. Here we report on the observation of both the spin valve and Hanle effects in lateral devices consisting of epitaxial Fe Schottky tunnel barrier contacts on an n-doped GaAs channel. The dependence on transverse magnetic field, temperature, and contact separation are in good agreement with a model incorporating spin drift and diffusion. Spin transport is detected for both directions of current flow through the source electrode. The sign of the electrical detection signal is found to vary with the injection current and is correlated with the spin polarization in the GaAs channel determined by optical measurements. Alloy disorder in II-VI diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS) is typically reduced when the local magnetic spins align in an applied magnetic field. An important and untested expectation of current models of alloy disorder, however, is that alloy fluctuations in many DMS compounds should increase again in very large magnetic fields of order 100 tesla. Here we measure the disorder potential in a Zn$_{.70}$Cd$_{.22}$Mn$_{.08}$Se quantum well via the low temperature photoluminescence linewidth, using a new magnet system to 89 T. Above 70 T, the linewidth is observed to increase again, in accord with a simple model of alloy disorder., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We discuss methods for imaging the nonequilibrium spin polarization of electrons in Fe/GaAs spin transport devices. Both optically- and electrically-injected spin distributions are studied by scanning magneto-optical Kerr rotation microscopy. Related methods are used to demonstrate electrical spin detection of optically-injected spin polarized currents. In bulk n-GaAs epilayers doped near the metal-insulator transition, we study the evolution of electron spin lifetime $\tau_s$ as a function of applied lateral electrical bias $E_x$. $\tau_s$ is measured via the Hanle effect using magneto-optical Kerr rotation. At low temperatures (T<10 K, where electrons are partially localized and $\tau_s > 100$ ns at zero bias), a marked collapse of $\tau_s$ is observed when $E_x$ exceeds the donor impact ionization threshold at $\sim$10 V/cm. A steep increase in the concentration of warm delocalized electrons -- subject to Dyakonov-Perel spin relaxation -- accounts for the rapid collapse of $\tau_s$, and strongly influences electron spin transport in this regime., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We use fiber-coupled photoconductive emitters and detectors to perform terahertz (THz) spectroscopy of lightly-doped n-InSb directly in the cryogenic (1.5 K) bore of a high-field superconducting magnet. We measure transmission spectra from 0.1-1.1 THz as the sample is driven through a metal-insulator transition (MIT) by applied magnetic field. In the low-field metallic state, the data directly reveal the plasma edge and magneto-plasmon modes. With increasing field, a surprisingly broad band (0.3-0.8 THz) of low transmission appears at the onset of the MIT. This band subsequently collapses and evolves into the sharp 1s -> 2p- transition of electrons `frozen' onto isolated donors in the insulating state., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We show that the accumulation of spin-polarized electrons at a forward-biased Schottky tunnel barrier between Fe and n-GaAs can be detected electrically. The spin accumulation leads to an additional voltage drop across the barrier that is suppressed by a small transverse magnetic field, which depolarizes the spins in the semiconductor. The dependence of the electrical accumulation signal on magnetic field, bias current, and temperature is in good agreement with the predictions of a drift-diffusion model for spin-polarized transport., Comment: Submitted to Phys. We measure the low-field Hall resistivity of a magnetically-doped two-dimensional electron gas as a function of temperature and electrically-gated carrier density. Comparing these results with the carrier density extracted from Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations reveals an excess Hall resistivity that increases with decreasing temperature. This excess Hall resistivity qualitatively tracks the paramagnetic polarization of the sample, in analogy to the ferromagnetic anomalous Hall effect. The data are consistent with skew-scattering of carriers by disorder near the crossover to localization.

We report on polarization-resolved resonant photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy of bright (spin-1) and dark (spin-2) excitons in colloidal CdSe nanocrystal quantum dots. Using high magnetic fields to 33 T, we resonantly excite (and selectively analyze PL from) spin-up or spin-down excitons. At low temperatures (<4K) and above ~10 T, the spectra develop a narrow, circularly polarized peak due to spin-flipped bright excitons. Its evolution with magnetic field directly reveals a large (1-2 meV), intrinsic fine structure splitting of bright excitons, due to anisotropic exchange. We construct a spin-drift-diffusion model to describe spin-polarized electron transport in zincblende semiconductors in the presence of magnetic fields, electric fields, and off-diagonal strain. We present predictions of the model for geometries that correspond to optical spin injection from the absorption of circularly polarized light, and for geometries that correspond to electrical spin injection from ferromagnetic contacts. Starting with the Keldysh Green's function description for a system driven out of equilibrium, we construct a semiclassical kinetic theory of electron spin transport in strained semiconductors in the presence of electric and magnetic fields. From this kinetic theory we derive spin-drift-diffusion equations for the components of the spin density matrix for the specific case of spatially uniform fields and uniform electron density. We solve the spin-drift-diffusion equations numerically and compare the resulting images with scanning Kerr microscopy data of spin-polarized conduction electrons flowing laterally in bulk epilayers of n-type GaAs. The spin-drift-diffusion model accurately describes the experimental observations. We contrast the properties of electron spin precession resulting from magnetic and strain fields. Spin-strain coupling depends linearly on electron wave vector and spin-magnetic field coupling is independent of electron wave vector. As a result, spatial coherence of precessing spin flows is better maintained with strain than with magnetic fields, and the spatial period of spin precession is independent of the applied electrical bias in strained structures whereas it is strongly bias dependent for the case of applied magnetic fields., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures

The optical properties of two-dimensional electron gases in ZnSe/(Zn,Be)Se and ZnSe/(Zn,Be,Mg)Se modulation-doped quantum wells with electron densities up to 1.4x10^{12} cm^{-2} were studied by photoluminescence, photoluminescence excitation and reflectivity in a temperature range between 1.6 and 70 K and in external magnetic fields up to 48 T. In these structures, the Fermi energy of the two-dimensional electron gas falls in the range between the trion binding energy and the exciton binding energy. Optical spectra in this regime are shown to be strongly influenced by the Coulomb interaction between electrons and photoexcited holes. In high magnetic fields, when the filling factor of the two-dimensional electron gas becomes smaller than two, a change from Landau-level-like spectra to exciton-like spectra occurs. Near-infrared magneto-optical spectroscopy of single-walled carbon nanotubes reveals two absorption peaks with an equal strength at high magnetic fields ($>$ 55 T). We show that the peak separation is determined by the Aharonov-Bohm phase due to the tube-threading magnetic flux, which breaks the time-reversal symmetry and lifts the valley degeneracy. This field-induced symmetry breaking thus overcomes the Coulomb-induced intervalley mixing which is predicted to make the lowest exciton state optically inactive (or ``dark'')., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

The ground state of negatively charged excitons (trions) in high magnetic fields is shown to be a dark triplet state, confirming long-standing theoretical predictions. Photoluminescence (PL), reflection, and PL excitation spectroscopy of CdTe quantum wells reveal that the dark triplet trion has lower energy than the singlet trion above 24 Tesla. The singlet-triplet crossover is "hidden" (i.e., the spectral lines themselves do not cross due to different Zeeman energies), but is confirmed by temperature-dependent PL above and below 24 T.
