Abstract

This research is concerned with the effects of temperature and frequency on the fatigue crack propagation behaviour. The fatigue behaviour at elevated temperature has been reviewed with emphasis on the mechanisms of propagation proposed to explain the effects of temperature and frequency. The crack propagation characteristics of a single crystal superalloy have been investigated at various temperatures and frequencies. Determination of the fatigue crack propagation rates was combined with the measurement of crack tip plastic zone sizes and observation of the deformation behaviour. At elevated temperature, the fatigue crack propagation rates were determined to be dependent on the frequency of loading. At low and high crack growth rates increased crack propagation rates were associated with higher cycling frequencies. At intermediate crack growth rates, the highest propagation rates were associated with the lowest frequency. Selected area channelling pattern techniques were used to determine the plastic zone sizes and revealed that at high frequencies (>10Hz) the plastic zone sizes at elevated and ambient temperature are similar. With decreasing frequency at elevated temperature creep may lead to increased plastic zone sizes but may also affect the crack tip geometry thereby restricting further effects. At room temperature crack propagation is observed to occur by shear of the γ' precipitate on {111} resulting in {111} crystallographic facets on the fracture surface. At elevated temperature (>6000 C) however, the crack growth mechanism changes and propagation takes place on {100}. Observations of the dislocation structure indicate that deformation is concentrated within the γ matrix. It is proposed that the observed crack propagation in the γ matrix on {100} arises by the constraints imposed by the surrounding γ' precipitate. A model is presented for the frequency dependence of the intermediate crack growth rate in terms of the observed strain gradients within the plastic zone and the achievement of a critical local fracture strain.

26. Nickel−Gallium-Catalyzed Electrochemical Reduction of CO_2 to Highly Reduced Products at Low Overpotentials

Abstract

We report the electrocatalytic reduction of CO_2 to the highly reduced C_2 products, ethylene and ethane, as well as to the fully reduced C_1 product, methane, on three different phases of nickel–gallium (NiGa, Ni_3Ga, and Ni_5Ga_3) films prepared by drop-casting. In aqueous bicarbonate electrolytes at neutral pH, the onset potential for methane, ethylene, and ethane production on all three phases was found to be −0.48 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), among the lowest onset potentials reported to date for the production of C_2 products from CO_2. Similar product distributions and onset potentials were observed for all three nickel–gallium stoichiometries tested. The onset potential for the reduction of CO_2 to C_2 products at low current densities catalyzed by nickel–gallium was >250 mV more positive than that of polycrystalline copper, and approximately equal to that of single crystals of copper, which have some of the lowest overpotentials to date for the reduction of CO_2 to C_2 products and methane. The nickel–gallium films also reduced CO to ethylene, ethane, and methane, consistent with a CO_2 reduction mechanism that first involves the reduction of CO2 to CO. Isotopic labeling experiments with ^(13)CO_2 confirmed that the detected products were produced exclusively by the reduction of CO_2.

Abstract

To review the clinical features, treatment, outcome and survival of metastatic tumors of the orbit.Retrospective, non-comparative, chart review of 80 patients with orbital metastasis treated in four tertiary orbital centres in Australia.The study included 80 patients of which, 44 were male with a mean age of 60 years. Orbital involvement commonly presented late in a multisystemic disease; however, the orbit was the first presentation in 15% of the cases. Diplopia (48%), pain (42%), and visual loss (30%) were the commonest symptoms at presentation; whereas proptosis (63%), strabismus (62%), and visual loss (41%) were the most frequent clinical signs. Computed tomography commonly showed a solid enhancing mass (42 cases) located within the orbital fat (43%), or enlarging an extraocular muscle (28%). Breast carcinoma (29%), melanoma (20%), and prostatic cancer (13%) were the most frequent histological types. Treatment was often multi-disciplinary and modalities included radiotherapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, surgery, and immunotherapy. Survival was limited to 1.5 years after diagnosis independent of the histological type, with 29% of patients alive after 17 months follow-up.A high index of suspicion and appropriate intervention with histological diagnosis can help in the management and quality of life in patients with metastatic orbital disease. Overall survival is limited and we encountered statistical limitations proving differences in the survival based on the sub-type of primary tumour involved. Metastatic orbital melanoma presented a higher incidence when compared with previous studies, probably due to the increase frequency of skin found in the Australian population.

Abstract

Sarcophyton glaucumis one of the most abundant and chemically studied soft corals with over 100 natural products reported in the literature, primarily cembrane diterpenoids. Yet, wide variation in the chemistry observed from S. glaucumover the past 50 years has led to its reputation as a capricious producer of bioactive metabolites. Recent molecular phylogenetic analysis revealed that S. glaucumis not a single species but a complex of at least seven genetically distinct species not distinguishable using traditional taxonomic criteria. We hypothesized that perceived intraspecific chemical variation observed in S. glaucumwas actually due to differences between cryptic species (interspecific variation). To test this hypothesis, we collected Sarcophytonsamples in Palau, performed molecular phylogenetic analysis, and prepared chemical profiles of sample extracts using gas chromatography-flame ionization detection. Both unsupervised (principal component analysis) and supervised (linear discriminant analysis) statistical analyses of these profiles revealed a strong relationship between cryptic species membership and chemical profiles. Liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry-based analysis using feature-based molecular networking permitted identification of the chemical drivers of this difference between clades, including cembranoid diterpenes (2R,11R,12R)-isosarcophytoxide (5), (2S,11R,12R)-isosarcophytoxide (6), and isosarcophine (7). Our results suggest that early chemical studies of Sarcophytonmay have unknowingly conflated different cryptic species of S. glaucum, leading to apparently idiosyncratic chemical variation.

Abstract

Previous reports show a no. of nanostructured transition metal phosphides (e.g. Ni_2P, MoP, FeP, WP and CoP) as effective Earth-abundant alternatives to Pt for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) via electrochem. and/or photochem. redn. of water. We now present a comprehensive study of these and other new phosphides for the electrocatalytic carbon dioxide redn. (CO2R). We examine the effect of surface chem. compn. and electronic structure on the selectivity and activity of the catalysts towards CO2R, det. the HER behavior under CO2R conditions, and investigate the trends in product distribution and faradaic efficiencies as a function of compn., potential and supporting electrolyte.
