Holy Trinity is now redundant and under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. The church has fallen into significant disrepair and the CCT has appointed a local architect to lead a design team to redefine the use of the building, following a successful HLF grant application. This will become ‘The Canny Space’, providing a wider appeal as a new community, commercial performance venue and heritage attraction. Holy Trinity is listed Grade I and therefore of exceptional interest and historical value. Constructed in 1719, possibly to a design by William Etty of York, it has survived for 3 centuries, largely in-tact with many of its early features, fixtures and fittings still surviving. In its heyday Holy Trinity had both secular and religious functions, with the current vestry once used as the Town Hall/Magistrates Court, with the town’s first library located in the room directly above. The council’s meeting table and library bookshelves still remain in situ. An understanding of the historic decorative phases of the church from the early C18 onwards is key to its restoration and presentation. Lincoln Conservation were commissioned by the CCT to sample and analyse the paint schemes applied, broadly date them and provide a picture of how the interior spaces have evolved.

HMS Caroline is a light cruiser of the 'Caroline Class' built at the Cammell Laird shipyard in Birkenhead and launched in September 1914. She is one of three World War 1 Royal Navy warships remaining and the only survivor of the Battle of Jutland. After the First World War, following a brief period in the East Indies, HMS Caroline was transferred to Belfast and converted for use as the local HQ for the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve. The ship was decommissioned in 2011 and two years later the Heritage Lottery Fund announced its support to restore the ship as a visitor attraction in Belfast, in time for an official opening to coincide with the centenary of the Battle of Jutland in 2017. This report outlines the methodology used to determine the precise Battleship Grey used on the external superstructure and the appearance of the internal spaces, helping to create a unique insight into life on board a rare surviving warship of the period.

Investigation and research for the Snowdonia National Park Authority (SNPA), into the decorative finishes extant at Yr Ysgwrn during the occupancy of Hedd Wynn. The farmstead of Yr Ysgwrn was the home of the Evans family, including Hedd Wyn (the bardic name for Ellis Humphrey Evans). Hedd Wyn was a renowned Welsh language poet, tragically killed at Passchendaele in 1917. The SNPA acquired the farmstead from the Evans family and undertook a programme of restoration to present the house (and particularly the cegin) as it appeared on the day Hedd Wyn departed for the final time. This report provides the method and evidence used to determine the appearance of the farmhouse in 1917, ready for its restoration and opening as a major visitor attraction to coincide with the centenary of Hedd Wyn's death in 2017.

Thornbank is one of a group of four terrace houses built in Douglas, Isle of Man in 1897 to a design by the renowned Arts & Crafts architect MacKay Hugh Baillie Scott. This report was commissioned by Manx National Heritage to investigate and research the original appearance of the house, both externally and internally. The results of this research are based on: the material evidence uncovered on site and in the Manx National Heritage Library & Archive, census returns and other pertinent material. A number of physical paint samples were removed for cross sectional analysis to determine the paint colours used and further investigations of the plastered walls to reveal stencil work and potentially traces of wallpapers. Although no evidence for historic wallpapers were found, traces of an early stencil design was uncovered running the perimeter of the entrance hall at frieze level. A number of early linoleum floor coverings have survived in the house, largely protected by later carpets. Although slightly later (1920's/30's) these were recorded and their significance and conservation needs addressed.

“Peggy” is a clinker built late eighteenth century small schooner built for the Quayle family of Castletown, that was rediscovered in a walled up boat house in the mid 1930’s next to the harbour in Castletown, Isle of Man. Since her rediscovery there has been some confusion regarding her precise date of construction, which has shifted and changed as new documentary and archival evidence has come to light. For example, in early publications of The Yachting World1, Journal of the Manx Museum2 and Special Exhibition of British Fishing Boats3 her date of construction is cited as 1793. Two further subsequent appraisals of the evidence in the 1960’s cite the date of her construction as 17894 and again as 17915. More recently the Drury McPherson Partnership was commissioned by Manx National Heritage in 2013 to produce a Conservation Management Plan for the Nautical Museum and it’s historic contents, notably “Peggy”. This has prompted a reappraisal of the documentary evidence relating to the Quayle family boats (there were at least three) and in the light of an emerging understanding of the harbour buildings associated with the Quayle family conclude this surviving vessel was built in 1789. However, it is appreciated this document is still in draft form at this stage and until finalized intended to provoke further discussion. No attempt has been made in this report to pin down the precise date of Peggy’s construction and will focus solely on the evidence uncovered following the analysis of a number of key paint samples removed in late September 2015. There is clear documentary evidence that George Quayle was experimenting with a sliding keel on Peggy and sailed her across the Irish Sea to take part in a regatta on Lake Windermere in 1796. His harrowing account of the return journey in bad weather makes the specific reference “without the Slidg, Keels we cd not have carried enough sail” 7.
