Abstract

We explore the role of intuitive theories in the cultural evolution of moral cognition, integrating recent work across subfields of psychology and suggesting directions for future research. Focusing on intuitive theories in the moral domain concerning how people judge the moral value of actions and make inferences about moral character, we review evidence that the specific forms these theories take vary across individuals and can change via social learning. We propose that cultural selection can operate over the intuitive theories people apply in the moral domain, in which particular variants of intuitive moral theories can be more "successful" to the extent that they are cognitively efficient or provide reputational benefits. Finally, we explore some implications of considering moral cognition as a kind of cultural technology that can be innovated, considering whether intuitive moral theories help or hinder our ability to improve our collective moral norms or practices. Abstract

We present an extensive set of photometric and spectroscopic data for SN 2009jf, a nearby Type Ib supernova, spanning from ~20 days before B-band maximum to one year after maximum. We show that SN 2009jf is a slow evolving and energetic stripped-envelope SN and is likely from a massive progenitor (25-30 solar masses). The large progenitor's mass allows us to explain the complete hydrogen plus helium stripping without invoking the presence of a binary companion. The supernova occurred close to a young cluster, in a crowded environment with ongoing star-formation. The specroscopic similarity with the He-poor Type Ic SN 2007gr suggests a common progenitor for some supernovae Ib and Ic. The nebular spectra of SN 2009jf are consistent with an asymmetric explosion, with an off-center dense core. We also find evidence that He-rich Ib supernovae have a rise time longer than other stripped-envelope supernovae, however confirmation of this result and further observations are needed., Comment: 24 pages, 20 figures, MNRAS, accepted

18. The role of serotonin in aversive motivation and altruistic punishment

Abstract

Counter to the predictions of influential economic models, humans often act against their own self-interest, incurring personal costs to help co-operators and punish cheaters. One potential mechanism governing the context-dependent variability of altruistic behaviour is neuromodulation by the neurotransmitter serotonin (5-HT), which responds to environmental stressors and shapes activity in brain regions implicated in social decision-making. Decades of research have linked 5-HT to prosocial behaviour across species; however, the specific motivational processes mediating this relationship have not yet been elucidated. I examine the influence of 5-HT on altruistic punishment by considering its function in basic motivational processes. Influential theories have implicated 5-HT in impulsivity, averse processing, and behavioural inhibition. Part I presents two experiments designed to arbitrate between these competing accounts of 5-HT function in aversive predictions, but not overall motor response inhibition or sensitivity to aversive outcomes. Study 2 replicates and extends these findings by showing that 5-HT selectively promotes Pavlovian rather than instrumental, withdrawal reactions to aversive predictions. Study 3 demonstrates that temporarily lowering 5-HT function increases the occurrence of altruistic punishment. Study 4 suggests that the effects of lowering 5-HT on altruistic punishment are partly mediated by concurrent increases in preference for immediate rewards, an effect that may depend on interactions between 5-HT and dopamine. In Study 5, I show that enhancing 5-HT function decreases the occurrence of altruistic punishment specifically through effects on harm aversion. Finally, Study 6 shows that the social context critically moderates the impact of 5-HT depletion on altruistic punishment. Findings provide strong evidence implicating 5-HT in human altruistic behaviour, and begin to clarify the influence of interacting neuromodulatory systems on social decision-making.

Abstract

Global access to resources like vaccines is key for containing the spread of infectious diseases. However, wealthy countries often pursue nationalistic policies, stockpiling doses rather than redistributing them globally. One possible motivation behind vaccine nationalism is a belief among policymakers that citizens will mistrust leaders who prioritize global needs over domestic protection. In seven experiments (total N = 4,215 adults), we demonstrate that such concerns are misplaced: Nationally representative samples across multiple countries with large vaccine surpluses (Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, and United States) trusted redistributive leaders more than nationalistic leaders—even the more nationalistic participants. This preference generalized across different diseases and manifested in both self-reported and behavioral measures of trust. Professional civil servants, however, had the opposite intuition and predicted higher trust in nationalistic leaders, and a nonexpert sample also failed to predict higher trust in redistributive leaders. We discuss how policymakers’ inaccurate intuitions might originate from overestimating others’ self-interest.

34. Neural mechanisms for learning self and other ownership

Abstract

Sense of ownership is a ubiquitous and fundamental aspect of human cognition. Here we used model-based functional magnetic resonance imaging and a novel minimal ownership paradigm to probe the behavioural and neural mechanisms underpinning ownership acquisition for ourselves, friends and strangers. We find a self-ownership bias at multiple levels of behaviour from initial preferences to reaction times and computational learning rates. Ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) and anterior cingulate sulcus (ACCs) responded more to self vs. stranger associations, but despite a pervasive neural bias to track selfownership, no brain area tracked self-ownership exclusively. However, ACC gyrus (ACCg) specifically coded ownership prediction errors for strangers and ownership associative strength for friends and strangers but not for self. Core neural mechanisms for associative learning are biased to learn in reference to self but also engaged when learning in reference to others. In contrast, ACC gyrus exhibits specialization for learning about others.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic represents a massive global health crisis. Because the crisis requires large-scale behaviour change and places significant psychological burdens on individuals, insights from the social and behavioural sciences can be used to help align human behaviour with the recommendations of epidemiologists and public health experts. Here we discuss evidence from a selection of research topics relevant to pandemics, including work on navigating threats, social and cultural influences on behaviour, science communication, moral decision-making, leadership, and stress and coping. In each section, we note the nature and quality of prior research, including uncertainty and unsettled issues. We identify several insights for effective response to the COVID-19 pandemic and highlight important gaps researchers should move quickly to fill in the coming weeks and months.

47. Think Pink! a Pink Sticker Alert System for Women with Psychological Distress or Vulnerability During Pregnancy

The importance of good clinical communication to women during pregnancy and birth is clear. Poor communication in labour is associated with general dissatisfaction, more complaints and a range of perinatal mental health problems including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and postnatal depression. To communicate effectively, maternity staff needs information about which women are vulnerable and require extra support. To address this, we implemented and evaluated a pink sticker communication system to alert midwifery and obstetric staff to potential psychological difficulties experienced by some women. Evaluation showed this system was viewed positively by women and midwifery staff. Audit of referrals to the perinatal psychology service during this period suggests no woman with a pink sticker developed birth trauma as a direct result of perceived poor care. In addition, the proportion of referrals to perinatal psychology for birth trauma significantly reduced during this period.
