Abstract

For several years in many countries industrial processes for carbon dioxide permanently capture have been investigating by solid state or in solution reactions using precursor materials and CO2 fluxes captured from industrial plants or in the atmosphere. The paper reports a new preparation process of materials made of magnesium oxide, magnesium hydroxide and magnesium carbonate starting from materials containing asbestos from natural sources (serpentine with chrysotile, ophiolites with amphiboles and asbestos of serpentine) through the use of mechanochemical high-energy mills. In the work we discuss the aspects related to the materials to be used, the mechanical activation parameters and the carbonation system in order to optimize the process and reduce the treatment costs. The method identified leads to the preparation of precursor materials usable in many chemical carbon dioxide capture process and as absorbent and dehydrating materials.

Abstract

In recent years the need to mitigate emissions of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere increased the number of studies on the use of slag for the capture of CO2: the use of mining and steel industry waste to capture carbon dioxide permanently is a method well known[1][2][3]; the question concerning the efficiency of these materials, however, is not solved[4]. In this paper we present the results obtained from tests on the carbonation of steel slag, studied by type, size class and composition, in order to verify the possibility of providing products to recover as much CO2 as possible. It was verified that most of the light and dark steel slag of blast furnace have a reactivity that, with the same content of alkaline oxide, depends on the particle size. This reactivity is expressed clearly with exothermic reactions, which can be emphasized if are used certain procedures that increase the reactivity, as agitation in ultrasound. The results show that we can achieve efficiencies of capture and reaction speed very high, but low energy consumption.

Abstract

Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is the most frequent acquired renal condition resulting in end stage kidney disease in children. We describe a cell therapy treatment with human allogeneic bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) in a 13-year-old patient developing recurrent FSGS after renal transplantation, which was not responding to conventional therapy. This treatment relied on the following measurements:clinical and laboratory evaluation of renal function, proteome array, biopsy, short tandem repeat assay. Before MSC treatment, the patient needed weekly plasmapheresis to achieve proteinuria-to-creatininuria ratio below 5. After three MSC infusions without adverse events, the patient has a stable renal function and the proteinuria target was reached without plasmapheresis. In addition, some circulating inflammatory factors decreased and their levels were still low after one year. This is the first report of an MSC treatment in an FSGS patient. Even though different factors may have contributed to the clinical results, after MSC infusion a stable reduction in the serum level of several inflammatory factors has been registered and the patient does not need anymore plasmapheresis to keep proteinuria under control. In addition, this encouraging single case let us identify some putative efficacy biomarkers that could be of clinical interest in chronic kidney diseases

Abstract

Tau is a microtubule-associated protein that promotes assembly and stabilization of cytoskeleton microtubules. It is mostly expressed in neuronal and glial cells but it is also present in non-neural cells such as fibroblasts and lymphocytes. An altered tau produces cytoskeleton pathology resulting in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and tauopathies. Tau has been suggested to be a multifunctional protein, due to its localization in different cellular compartments. However its further functions are still unclear. We analyzed the distribution of tau in human skin fibroblasts showing its localization in the nucleus and along mitotic chromosomes. Then, we investigated if an altered tau, such as the P301L mutated protein associated with frontotemporal dementia, could produce nuclear pathology. We found that patients carrying the mutation consistently had several chromosome aberrations in their fibroblasts and lymphocytes: chromosome and chromatid breakages or gaps, aneuploidies, translocations, in addition to chromatin bridges and decondensed chromosomes. Our findings argue for a role of tau in chromosome stability by means of its interaction with both microtubules and chromatin.
