Systematic assessments of species extinction risk at regular intervals are necessary for informing conservation action1,2. Ongoing developments in taxonomy, threatening processes and research further underscore the need for reassessment3,4. Here we report the findings of the second Global Amphibian Assessment, evaluating 8,011 species for the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List of Threatened Species. We find that amphibians are the most threatened vertebrate class (40.7% of species are globally threatened). The updated Red List Index shows that the status of amphibians is deteriorating globally, particularly for salamanders and in the Neotropics. Disease and habitat loss drove 91% of status deteriorations between 1980 and 2004. Ongoing and projected climate change effects are now of increasing concern, driving 39% of status deteriorations since 2004, followed by habitat loss (37%). Although signs of species recoveries incentivize immediate conservation action, scaled-up investment is urgently needed to reverse the current trends.

Популација обичне крастаче пoсматрана је у сезони размножавања током пет узастопних година. Одрасле јединке су пребројаване, мерене и узорковане ради одређивања старости (скелетохронологија). Главни циљ је био испитати утицај варирања одабраних метеоролошких параметара на фенологију размножавања популације и промене бројности, ефективне величине, односа полова, узрасне структуре и кондиционог индекса масе јединки унутар адултног дела популације. Проверена је и повезаност између фекундитета женки, њихове старости и величине тела. Фекундитет је претпостављен поређењем са ранијим истраживањима исте популације. Утврђен је тренд ка повећању просечне дневне температуре ваздуха у периоду пре почетка размножавања, али он није утицао на промену временске динамике сезоне парења. Утврђена је позитивна корелација између зима са више падавина и броја јединки које су учествовале у размножавању. Ефективна величина и узрасна структура популације значајно су се мењали током година, али независно од варирања метеоролошких параметара. Утврђена је слаба негативна корелација између топлијих зима и вредности кондиционог индекса јединки, који је такође значајно варирао током година. Адултних мужјака је било знатно више од адултних женки. Женке су биле веће од мужјака. Индекс полног диморфизма у величини тела је варирао између година. Асортативно укрштање није потврђено. Мужјаци у амплексусу су били крупнији од мужјака без женки, али нису имали већи кондициони индекс масе. Женке веће масе тела имале су већи претпостављени фекундитет, али се он није значајно мењао са старошћу. Утврђене су значајне флуктуације структуре и динамике анализиране популације, али је потребно више година посматрања да би се утврдио могући утицај варирања метеоролошких параметара., One population of common toads was monitored on the breeding grounds for five consecutive years (2011–2015). Individuals were counted, measured and samples of hind leg toe phalange were taken for age assessment by sкeletochronology. The main goal was to analyse the effects of some weather parameters on reproductive phenology of this population. Change of effective and census population size, sex ratio, age structure and body mass condition index (BMCI), as well as relations among female fecundity, age, and body size, were also analysed in adult part of this population over time. Female fecundity was calculated regarding body mass, derived by comparison with earlier study. The trend was found toward increase of average daily air temperature in period before start of the breeding season, but it didn’t have impact on change in temporal dynamics of the breeding season. Positive correlation was found between winters with more precipitation and reproductive population size. Effective population size and age structure significantly varied along years, but independently from variation of weather parameters. Weak negative correlation was found between warmer winters and BMCI. BMCI also varied significantly along years. Females were larger than males. Index of sexual dimorphism in body size varied along years. Assortative mating was not confirmed. Males recorded in amplexus were bigger than solitary males, but generally didn’t differ in BMCI. Heavier females also had higher projected fecundity, and it didn’t change with age. Significant fluctuations of structure and dynamics were recorded in this population, but more years of monitoring are required to check possible impact of variation of weather parameters.

Mrke žabe (Rana dalmatina, R. graeca, R. temporaria) i obična krastača (Bufo bufo) na području Srbije mogu biti sintopne, a ulaze u vodena staništa samo tokom kratkog reproduktivnog perioda u rano proleće. Punoglavci provode duži vremenski period u vodenim staništima i lakše su uočljivi u odnosu na adulte. Analiza njihove morfologije je jedan od mogućih načina taksonomske identifikacije, naročito u slučajevima kada su genetičke metode nedostupne. Kod nekih vrsta punoglavci na ranim stupnjevima su vizuelno veoma slični, što otežava njihovu identifikaciju na terenu. Definisani su sledeći osnovni ciljevi: utvrditi osobine spoljašnje morfologije punoglavaca analiziranih vrsta žaba na osnovu kojih se može odrediti njihova taksonomska pripadnost; utvrditi efikasnost primene analiza oblika tela punoglavaca u taksonomskoj identifikaciji; razviti procedure za njihovu pouzdanu, brzu i ekonomičnu taksonomsku identifikaciju. Dodatno, izvršena je taksonomska genetička identifikacija, upoređena je upotreba metoda tradicionalne i geometrijske morfometrije u morfološkoj diferencijaciji ranih larvenih stadijuma, kao i filogenetski i fenetički odnosi analiziranih vrsta. Iz prirode su sakupljeni punoglavci R. dalmatina, R. temporaria i B. bufo na ranim razvojnim stupnjevima. Taksonomska identifikacija izvršena je DNK barkoding metodom, primenom 16S rRNK markera. Metodama tradicionalne morfometrije je utvrđeno da relativna dužina i širina glave predstavljaju karaktere za razlikovanje rodova Rana i Bufo, dok je relativna dužina repa karakter za razlikovanje dve vrste mrkih žaba. Detaljnije analize oblika i veličine laboratorijski uspešno odgajanih punoglavaca R. dalmatina, R. temporaria i B. bufo vršene su metodama geometrijske i tradicionalne morfometrije na ranim stupnjevima razvića. Oba pristupa su dala slične rezultate kada su u pitanju kvantifikacija i opis varijabilnosti veličine i oblika. The meadow lizard (Darevskia praticola) is a small lacertid species that usually lives in shaded and moist, forest habitats. The western limit of its distribution range with peripheral populations is located in the territory of Serbia. Since peripheral populations can in many aspects be significantly different from central populations the subject of this dissertation was to: recognize the environmental parameters that limit the expansion of the species range, analyse populations’ traits and habitats, compare the levels of environmental stress in central and peripheral populations by analysing the levels of fluctuating asymmetry (FA) and condition indices of mass, as well as to examine the ecophysiological traits of the species. Ecological niche modelling indicated two significant factors that limit the distribution of the meadow lizard – narrow climate tolerance and deforestation. Analysis of central and peripheral populations showed that they did not differ in density, that they had a similar proportion of adults and a similar sex ratio. Females were larger than males, while the body size was not correlated with altitude and latitude and it did not differ between the two types of populations. Condition indices were lower in males from central populations and from populations with a larger number of predatory reptile species. However, no differences in FA levels were observed between central and peripheral populations. It has been experimentally demonstrated that the meadow lizard had developed mechanisms for conserving water in the body and that its range of selected temperatures was lower than in most lacertid lizards. The conclusion is that the activity and distribution of the meadow lizard are likely limited by the thermal requirements of the species, and that its observed association with humid habitats is likely a result of the selection of habitats that match its preferred temperatures.
