Abstract

A clear psychological profile exists for doctors who refuse to accept medical futility and continue to treat dying patients, as shown by a study of 301 doctors in Texas. This type views futile treatment as doing all one can, and makes poor distinction between treatment and benefit. Typically, the doctors are religious males who do not consider legal aspects in their decisions, and are emotionally unconnected to patients. Perhaps one fifth of tertiary care hospital physicians could fit the profile.
